Abstract:Organisms are composed of molecules typically arranged and oriented in order.The structures of organisms are related to the positional distribution of molecules and their spatial orientation.Polarized fluorescence microscopy(PFM)is such an imaging tool that facilitates the sense and observation of the molecule orientation in biological samples by utilizing fluorescence polarization,enabling the revealing of functional and metabolic information beyond fluorescence intensity provided by more traditional fluorescence microscopy.In this review,we first briefly describe the theory and principle of PFM and then introduce several implementations of PFM on different microscopic modalities.We later summarize its applications in the field of biomedical research and finally discuss its potential future directions.

Abstract:Depth sensing is a basic issue in three-dimensional computer vision, and structured light is one of the most prevailing methods for it. However, complex surroundings and strong ambient illumination are fairly unfavorable to depth sensing based on structured light. Complex surroundings increase computation overhead and require extra effort to be separated from the target object. Strong ambient illumination is unfavorable to the signal-noise ratio of structured light and, thus, increases the difficulty of decoding. In this paper, we propose that the polarization-coded structured light is capable of target enhanced depth sensing in ambient illumination. We present the polarimetric principle, an improved algorithm of polarization-coded structured light, and signal-noise-ratio analysis in ambient illumination. Experimental results show that polarization-coded structured light is efficient and robust for target depth sensing of a complicated environment. The polarization-coded structured light is promising to the target depth sensing in an outdoor scenario and industrial inspection.
Effects of Wavelength on Polarization Correlated Imaging of Rough Surface Objects

Abstract:Correlated imaging is a research hotspot in recent years. It shows advantages over conventional optical imaging on scanning and imaging rate, noise immunity and so on, and has good application prospects in military electronic reconnaissance and other fields According to the basic principle of polarization correlation imaging, this paper established the spectral polarization BRDF model of rough surface. Taking two typical materials of aluminum alloy and PC plastic as target and background, the effects of wavelength on polarization correlated imaging of rough surface objects is analyzed. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the wavelength has little influence on the conventional correlated imaging, and the effects on the polarization correlated imaging appear in complex refractive index, linear polarization and contrast. The wavelength of the best imaging quality can be determined according to different material properties of the set target and the known background.

Abstract:Traditional lidar techniques mainly rely on the backscattering/echo light intensity and spectrum as information sources. In contrast, polarization lidar (P-lidar) expands the dimensions of detection by utilizing the physical property of polarization. By incorporating parameters such as polarization degree, polarization angle, and ellipticity, P-lidar enhances the richness of physical information obtained from target objects, providing advantages for subsequent information analysis. Over the past five decades, the application fields of P-lidar have rapidly expanded, starting from its early use in atmospheric remote sensing to later applications in oceanic remote sensing. This review first provides a brief introduction to the basic principles of both polarization and P-lidar, along with typical systems. It then explores the applications of P-lidar in various remote sensing fields, including atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial domains. Additionally, we propose potential research directions based on current cutting-edge applications, with the aims of providing critical insights to researchers in the fields of polarization and lidar and inspiring further exciting ideas.

Analysis Methods for Polarization State and Energy Transmission of Rays Propagating in Optical Systems

Abstract:Polarization state of only completely polarized light can be analyzed by some software, ZEMAX for example. Based on principles of geometrical optics, novel descriptions of the light with different polarization state are provided in this paper. Differential calculus is well used for saving the polarization state and amplitudes of sampling rays when ray tracing. The polarization state changes are analyzed in terms of several typical circumstances, such as Brewster incidence, total reflection. Natural light and partially polarized light are discussed as an important aspect. Further more, a computing method including composition and decomposition of sampling rays at each surface is also set up to analyze the energy transmission of the rays for optical systems. Adopting these analysis methods mentioned, not only the polarization state changes of the incident rays can be obtained, but also the energy distributions can be calculated. Since the energy distributions are obtained, the surface with the most energy loss will be found in the optical system. The energy value and polarization state of light reaching the image surface will also be available. These analysis methods are very helpful for designing or analyzing optical systems, such as analyzing the energy of stray light in high power optical systems, researching the influences of optical surfaces to rays' polarization state in polarization imaging systems and so on.

Abstract:Quantitative studies of atmospheric aerosol particles are key to atmospheric polarization remote sensing physics, because aerosol particles are decisive factors affecting the remote sensing atmospheric window. Furthermore, atmospheric polarization characteristics can be described through space polarization diagram theory and atmospheric polarization neutral point zone theory, which is equally effective to space polarization field theory when describing atmospheric polarization characteristics. To be specific, polarization is the physical basis for atmospheric scattering given the importance of its polarization features and proves the single scattering characteristics of non-spherical aerosol and polarization observations, to quantify the atmosphere through polarization methods. It also underpins multiple scattering based on non-spherical models and multiple flat distributions of the full-sky polarization field, to achieve atmospheric three-dimensional chromatography at various observation angles, separation inversion of non-spherical aerosol, and land surface information based on space polarization field theory. The theories expounded in Chaps. 7 and 8 are combined to constitute polarization field vector features for use in remote sensing.

Abstract:It is difficult to cope with the changes in power and polarization for partially polarized light. The light polarization will also affect the image quality, especially for imaging with large numerical aperture. A novel method of analyzing the power and the polarization state of partially polarized light is proposed in this paper. This method has a good intuitiveness and requires much smaller computation. An aplanatic lens system is simulated. Polarization effect caused is analyzed with this method. The results show that for the imaging light the intensity of TM polarized light relatively increases because of large numerical aperture, which will influence image contrast. Imaging in high refractive index medium can be used to improve this problem.

Abstract:Polarization can provide information largely uncorrelated with the spectrum and intensity. Therefore, polarimetric imaging (PI) techniques have significant advantages in many fields, e.g., ocean observation, remote sensing (RS), biomedical diagnosis, and autonomous vehicles. Recently, with the increasing amount of data and the rapid development of physical models, deep learning (DL) and its related technique have become an irreplaceable solution for solving various tasks and breaking the limitations of traditional methods. PI and DL have been combined successfully to provide brand-new solutions to many practical applications. This review briefly introduces PI and DL’s most relevant concepts and models. It then shows how DL has been applied for PI tasks, including image restoration, object detection, image fusion, scene classification, and resolution improvement. The review covers the state-of-the-art works combining PI with DL algorithms and recommends some potential future research directions. We hope that the present work will be helpful for researchers in the fields of both optical imaging and RS, and that it will stimulate more ideas in this exciting research field.

Abstract:While polarization sensing is vital in many areas of research, with applications spanning from microscopy to aerospace, traditional approaches are limited by method-related error amplification, accumulation, and pre-processing steps, constraining the performance of single-shot polarimetry. Here, we propose a measurement paradigm that circumvents these limitations, based on the use of a universal full Poincare generator to map all polarization analyzer states into a single vectorially structured light field. All vector components are analyzed in a single shot, extracting the vectorial state through inference from a physical model of the resulting image, providing a single-step sensing procedure. To demonstrate the feasibility of our approach, we use a common graded index (GRIN) optic as our mapping device and show mean errors of <1% for each vector component. Our work paves the way for next-generation polarimetry, impacting a wide variety of applications that rely on vector measurement. Abstract:Normally, Strehl ratio, resolution, and focus depth, the parameters that are used to evaluate the performance of an optical imaging system, are always calculated by scalar diffraction method. Considering the vectorial properties of light, especially when the system numerical aperture (NA) is high, the accuracy of scalar method can no longer fulfill the requirement of analysis. The variations of properties of these parameters accompanied by using of vectorial method are discussed. In order to describe the effects of polarization clearly, assuming a system with identical polarization state within the entrance pupil, by formula deduction and numerical simulation, we conclude that due to the influence of the polarization, the maximum intensity of system diffraction spot decreases, the resolution between image plane and parallel polarized orientation of incident light drops down, then the diffraction spot loses its circular symmetry, the focus depth changes slightly, and these effects becomes more apparent with the increase of system NA. Finally, the method of calculating the off-axis images is discussed in the paper.

Abstract:Polarization information of the light can provide rich cues for computer vision and scene understanding tasks, such as the type of material, pose, and shape of the objects. With the advent of new and cheap polarimetric sensors, this imaging modality is becoming accessible to a wider public for solving problems, such as pose estimation, 3D reconstruction, underwater navigation, and depth estimation. However, we observe several limitations regarding the usage of this sensorial modality, as well as a lack of standards and publicly available tools to analyze polarization images. Furthermore, although polarization camera manufacturers usually provide acquisition tools to interface with their cameras, they rarely include processing algorithms that make use of the polarization information. In this work, we review recent advances in applications that involve polarization imaging, including a comprehensive survey of recent advances on polarization for vision and robotics perception tasks. We also introduce a complete software toolkit that provides common standards to communicate with and process information from most of the existing micro-grid polarization cameras on the market. The toolkit also implements several image processing algorithms for this modality, and it is publicly available on GitHub.

Abstract:Polarization remote sensing can be used to obtain polarization data for a given target. It can be acquire not only radiation data, as also measured by conventional remote sensing, but also to quantify the polarization of the target according to its intrinsic characteristics. Polarization remote sensing allows for more accurate quantification of ground objects. The polarization pattern of the whole sky, neutral point concept, separation of ground-gas parameters, and multi-angle observation of atmospheric particles underpin atmospheric polarization remote sensing. Polarization remote sensing measurements of a target surface provide relatively reliable polarization information, which is indispensable in modern optical remote sensing. Bionic polarization-based autonomous navigation, advanced space-based polarization detection, and global change research based on the Earth polarization phenomenon are new application areas of polarization remote sensing.

Abstract:Online identification and characterization of suspended aerosols can provide a scientific basis for understanding aerosol transformations, quantitatively evaluating the impacts on air quality, public health, and the source apportionment of different atmospheric particulate matters. In this study, we confirm the validity of our developed high-throughput multi-angle polarized scattering vector detection of aerosols and multidimensional polarization scattering index systems. By observation of the mean values, variance, and Wilk’s Lambda of multidimensional polarization indices for different aerosol types, the polarization index shows unique characterization abilities for aerosol properties, and the optimal combination of polarization indices can always be found for a specific aerosol category with a high resolution and discrimination. Clearly, the multidimensional polarization indices of individual aerosols are more suitable for online and real-time aerosol identification and even help to explain the in situ microphysical characteristics of aerosols or evaluate the dynamic evolution of aerosols.

Abstract:This chapter presents the physical phenomenon of the full-sky polarization effect generated by atmospheric effects, which is measurable and stable, and has become a feasible theoretical basis for quantitative analysis of atmospheric remote sensing defined as the sky polarization pattern, therefore, the systematic observations of, and research into, sky polarization patterns provided possibilities for the systematic, quantitative observation of atmospheric effects.
