Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Nature is an inspiring resource for chemists to exploit uncharted chemical spaces. Enzymes in nature are characteristic of high efficiency and exquisite stereocontrol under rather mild conditions. Not surprisingly, chemists have a long history in developing new catalysts by learning from and imitating the natural enzymes. This review summarizes our long-standing efforts in developing bio-inspired small molecular catalysis. These were categorized according to the employed strategies: 1) bi-/multi-functional strategy for the bio-inspired chiral primary amine catalyst; 2) cofactor strategy for bio-inspired ortho-quinone catalyst; 3) intermediate strategy for chiral latent carbocation catalysis based on natural carbocation process. Each section includes brief introduction of the biological origin, design of catalyst, development of methodology as well as the underlying mechanistic insights. What is the most favorite and original chemistry developed in your research group? I hope it's always the next one. How do you get into this specific field? Could you please share some experiences with our readers? Nature provides many astonishing catalytic machineries for building up molecular complexity and harnessing energy in the most efficient ways. Nature's recipe for catalysis serves as a starting point to develop new catalyst for synthetic and energy chemistry. I was trained as a synthetic chemist in a physical organic group in Nankai and ICCAS, and spent part of my graduate studies doing enzymatic synthesis of oligosaccharide and its related biological applications in Ohio State University. This gave me a mixed view on organocatalysis, then under its golden stage of renaissance, not only for its synthetic potentials as a new catalytic concept, but also with an eye on its biological origin and possible impact beyondsynthesis. I also benefit a lot from the physical organic chemistry training which helps to shape my research path in width and depth, in a way I never imagined and expected at the beginning of my career. How do you supervise your students? Try to inspire beyond instruct. I learned and am still learning. "(sic)?(sic)(sic) " is easy to say than to do. In reality, I become bossy the way I dislike and have to instruct heavily. What is the most important personality for scientific research? Curiosity, broad reading and sufficient "free time " for daydreaming. In order to have enough time to waste, you have to work really hard at first. Who influences you mostly in your life? My Ph.D. supervisor, Prof. Jin-Pei Cheng who teaches me a rational and quantitative view for chemistry and inspires me all the time to pursue a rational approach in research.

Abstract:The catalytic approaches fulfilled by the singly dispersed metal atoms anchoring on the solid materials were categorized as single-atom catalysis. In this perspective, after briefly introducing the history in this research field, we compare the differences between single-atom catalyst and several terms indicating some heterogeneous highly dispersed metal catalysts. Single-atom catalysts could provide the simplified models in exploring the catalytically active structures, and a new era of designing catalysts at the atomic scale is thus opened. In this context, single-atom catalysis may be regarded as a bridge to combine the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Moreover, the materials containing isolated metal centers also provide great opportunities in many other applications, such as medicinal treatment, selective separation of gas molecule, and quantum devices. At last, challenges to the single-atom catalysis are discussed.

Abstract:Comprehensive SummaryModel catalysts approach is widely adopted in fundamental studies of complex heterogeneous catalysis. Traditional model catalysts are single crystal‐based model catalysts, whose results, however, sometimes suffer from the “material gap” and “pressure gap” when applied to working catalysts. Recently, uniform catalytic nanocrystals with well‐defined structures have emerged, and we have put forward a concept of nanocrystal‐based model catalysts for fundamental studies of complex heterogeneous catalysis under conditions approaching working catalysts as closely as possible. In this perspective, we summarize our research progresses on Cu2O‐based nanocrystal model catalysts. Following a brief introduction, we summarize controlled synthesis of uniform Cu2O nanocrystals with various morphologies, morphology‐dependent surface compositions and structures and surface chemistry of uniform Cu2O nanocrystals, and heterogeneous catalysis of Cu2O‐based nanocrystals. Finally, we conclude the concept of nanocrystal‐based model catalysts and outlook that uniform nanocrystals can act not only as model catalysts but also as efficient catalysts. What is the most favorite and original chemistry developed in your research group?By far, the most favorite and original chemistry developed in my research group is the concept of “nanocrystal model catalysts”, which overcomes the so‐called “materials gap” and “pressure gap” encountered by the research field of surface chemistry for heterogeneous catalysis using traditional single crystal model catalysts.How do you get into this specific field? Could you please share some experiences with our readers?Surface chemistry studies of single crystal model catalysts had been considered to be able to achieve the fundamental understanding of complex heterogeneous catalysis before the “materials gap” and “pressure gap” were found to exist between single crystal model catalysts and working powder catalysts. Since then, to overcome the “materials gap” and “pressure gap” has been a main goal of the research field of surface chemistry for heterogeneous catalysis. I established my research group in 2004 when catalytic nanocrystals with uniform and well‐defined surface structures emerged quite a lot, and then had the idea of using nanocrystals as a novel type of model catalysts for fundamental studies of complex heterogeneous catalysis under conditions approaching workingcatalysts as closely as possible. Our work has successfully validated the concept of “nanocrystal model catalysts”. Abstract:AbstractSince the insight to fuse Fenton chemistry and nanomedicine into cancer therapy, great signs of progress have been made in the field of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). However, the exact mechanism of CDT is obscured by the unique tumor chemical environment and inevitable nanoparticle‐cell interactions, thus impeding further development. In this Scientific Perspective, the significance of CDT is clarified, the complex mechanism is deconstructed into primitive chemical and biological interactions, and the mechanism research directions based on the chemical kinetics and biological signaling pathways are discussed in detail. Moreover, beneficial outlooks are presented to enlighten the evolution of next‐generation CDT. Hopefully, this Scientific Perspective can inspire new ideas and advances for CDT and provide a reference for breaking down the interdisciplinary barriers in the field of nanomedicine.

Abstract:Nano‐catalysis plays a vital role in the industrially chemical transformations. The increasingly severe energy crisis and environmental issues spur scientists to exploit novel nano‐catalysts in diverse fields. It is essential to understand the fundamental physicochemical properties of nano‐catalysts to develop efficient systems, whose design can be subsequently precisely tuned at the atomic level. In this review, we summarize several key factors affecting the catalytic activity of nano‐catalysts, including structure, composition, size, and interface, providing guidance for the atomic level control of high‐efficient nano‐catalysts. Finally, we present a brief conclusion and some thoughts on nano‐catalysis. What is the most favorite and original chemistry developed in your research group? Nanomaterials for catalysis and renewable energy. How do you supervise your students? I always encourage my students to innovate, persist and enjoy their researches. What is the most important personality for scientific research? Strong interest. What are your hobbies? What's your favorite book(s)? Reading, travelling and gaming. Abstract:<p>Energy‐related catalytic reactions have been extensively investigated in past years in order to efficiently utilize clean and environmentally benign energy sources. In these systems, the catalysts and the catalyst/active medium interfaces play a crucial role in determining their performance. Thus, understanding the physical and chemical properties of catalysts during reactions is of importance to provide fundamental insights for designing the devices. Transmission electron microscopy can provide tremendous information regarding materials' morphology, microstructure, and chemical properties at nanoscales. With in situ electron microscopy, dynamic processes of catalytic reactions in both gas and liquid environments have been investigated in real time. In this paper, the recent research progress of in situ and operando electron microscopy techniques are introduced with the representative works in energy‐related reactions, including electrochemical catalysis in liquid media and heterogeneous catalysis in gas media. The uniqueness of the specific electron microscopy methods and scientific merits of each work are highlighted. Finally, outlooks on emerging research opportunities are discussed.</p>

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts provide an ideal platform to bridge the gap between homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts. Here, the recent progress in this field is reported from the perspectives of static regulation and dynamic evolution. The syntheses and characterizations of single-atom catalysts are briefly discussed as a prerequisite for catalytic investigation. From the perspective of static regulation, the metal-support interaction is illustrated in how the supports alter the electronic properties of single atoms and how the single atoms activate the inert atoms in supports. The synergy between single atoms is highlighted. Besides these static views, the surface reconstruction, such as displacement and aggregation of single atoms in catalytic conditions, is summarized. Finally, the current technical challenges and mechanistic debates in single-atom heterogeneous catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:Phase transformations at the nanoscale display interesting and important differences from those which occur in the bulk of most materials systems. These differences occur in a large variety of transformations, including melting, solid state phase transformation, chemical ordering and disordering, and chemical and electrochemical transformations. They arise from both the thermodynamic contribution of surface energy as well as the kinetic influence of small diffusion distances. These changes in the energetics and dynamics of transformation can prove important for a variety of technologies, including energy storage, energy conversion, and information technologies.

Abstract:Core‐shell nanostructures constituted by a plasmonic core and an ultrathin shell have drawn enormous attentions in enhanced spectroscopies, catalysis, energy, and other fields because of their splendid properties such as multifunctionality, stability, and adjustability. In this article, we summarized the endeavors made by our group in the past decade about the core‐shell nanostructures in the shell‐isolated nanoparticle‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) and plasmon‐enhanced spectroscopies. Meanwhile, the potential challenges and perspectives about core‐shell nanostructures in spectroscopies have also been proposed. Thus, we believe this article would provide an avenue for a comprehensive understanding of enhanced spectroscopies with core‐shell nanostructures. What is the most favorite and original chemistry developed in your research group?? Core‐shell nanostructure enhanced Raman spectroscopy for surface analysis. How do you get into this specific field? Could you please share some experiences with our readers?? I started the studies on Raman spectroscopy since I was a Ph.D. candidate. I think most researchers should concentrate on specific fields, especially those that can hardly be solved by others, and make constant research on them. How do you supervise your students?? Abstract:The ubiquitous two-step Michaelis–Menten and Temkin–Boudart reaction mechanisms are extended to include the influence of the catalyst electronic subsystem in a 5-step mechanism. The resulting kinetic equation provides an alternative explanation for the well-known volcano-shaped dependence found in catalysis. The equilibrium constants of fast electronic steps are highlighted for their influence on adsorption and desorption through the relative concentration of charged versus neutral intermediates. This generalized concept can be widely applied to determine the optimal catalyst, based on the Fermi level of the material, for reactions proceeding via this universal reaction.

Abstract:Although the concept of click chemistry was proposed more than twenty years ago, the research progress of click chemistry has emerged with great vitality, and this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry has once again highlighted the importance of the field of click chemistry. Click chemistry is a reaction in which a variety of molecules are quickly and reliably synthesized by piecing together small units. In particular, it emphasizes the development of new combinatorial chemistry methods based on the synthesis of carbon-heteroatomic bonds and the simple and efficient acquisition of molecular diversity through these reactions. Based on the superior reaction characteristics of click chemistry, click chemistry methods for production are advancing toward precision, simplicity, and high returns, especially in producing polymer materials and some bright biomedical applications. Here, we describe the development logic of typical click reactions with different substrates and catalysts. The latest technologies of click chemistry in the structure control and functional properties of polymers, as well as in the field of biomedicine and its expanding applications, are discussed. Finally, we identify the challenges of click chemistry in reaction mechanisms and engineering applications, and suggest potential future development directions in the future. Abstract:Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been extensively employed to explore catalytic mechanisms in recent years. Nevertheless, traditional TEM techniques cannot clarify the true active states in the reaction process. In contrast, in situ TEM has made remarkable progress in simulating reactions, allowing the record of dynamic events at the atomic scale. In addition, it provides a wealth of information on the material morphology, microstructure, and dynamics of chemical properties at the micro-nano scale. In this review we introduce the principles, characteristics and research progress in the field of in situ TEM techniques, with particular emphasis on their roles in exploring in the fields of catalysts' synthesis, catalytic behaviors, thermal catalysis, and structure reconstruction of the catalysis process. The challenges and obstacles facing in situ TEM, as well as outlook for emerging research opportunities are discussed in the final part.
