Abstract:Many applications of porous media research involves high pressures and, correspondingly, exchange of thermal energy between the fluid and the matrix. While the system is relatively well understood for the case of non-moving porous media, the situation when the elastic matrix can move and deform, is much more complex. In this paper we derive the equations of motion for the dynamics of a deformable porous media which includes the effects of friction forces, stresses, and heat exchanges between the media, by using the new methodology of variational approach to thermodynamics. This theory extends the recently developed variational derivation of the mechanics of deformable porous media to include thermodynamic processes and can easily include incompressibility constraints. The model for the combined fluid-matrix system, written in the spatial frame, is developed by introducing mechanical and additional variables describing the thermal energy part of the system, writing the action principle for the system, and using a nonlinear, nonholonomic constraint on the system deduced from the second law of thermodynamics. The resulting equations give us the general version of possible friction forces incorporating thermodynamics, Darcy-like forces and friction forces similar to those used in the Navier-Stokes equations. The equations of motion are valid for arbitrary dependence of the kinetic and potential energies on the state variables. The results of our work are relevant for geophysical applications, industrial applications involving high pressures and temperatures, food processing industry, and other situations when both thermodynamics and mechanical considerations are important.

A scalable variational inequality approach for flow through porous media models with pressure-dependent viscosity

Abstract:Mathematical models for flow through porous media typically enjoy the so-called maximum principles, which place bounds on the pressure field. It is highly desirable to preserve these bounds on the pressure field in predictive numerical simulations, that is, one needs to satisfy discrete maximum principles (DMP). Unfortunately, many of the existing formulations for flow through porous media models do not satisfy DMP. This paper presents a robust, scalable numerical formulation based on variational inequalities (VI), to model non-linear flows through heterogeneous, anisotropic porous media without violating DMP. VI is an optimization technique that places bounds on the numerical solutions of partial differential equations. To crystallize the ideas, a modification to Darcy equations by taking into account pressure-dependent viscosity will be discretized using the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas (RT0) and Variational Multi-scale (VMS) finite element formulations. It will be shown that these formulations violate DMP, and, in fact, these violations increase with an increase in anisotropy. It will be shown that the proposed VI-based formulation provides a viable route to enforce DMP. Moreover, it will be shown that the proposed formulation is scalable, and can work with any numerical discretization and weak form. Parallel scalability on modern computational platforms will be illustrated through strong-scaling studies, which will prove the efficiency of the proposed formulation in a parallel setting. Algorithmic scalability as the problem size is scaled up will be demonstrated through novel static-scaling studies. The performed static-scaling studies can serve as a guide for users to be able to select an appropriate discretization for a given problem size.

A Moving Mesh Method for Porous Medium Equation by the Onsager Variational Principle

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new approach to solving the porous medium equation using a moving mesh finite element method that leverages the Onsager variational principle as an approximation tool. Both the continuous and discrete problems are formulated based on the Onsager principle. The energy dissipation structure is maintained in the semi-discrete and fully implicit discrete schemes. We also develop a fully decoupled explicit scheme by which only a few linear equations are solved sequentially in each time step. The numerical schemes exhibit an optimal convergence rate when the initial mesh is appropriately selected to ensure accurate approximation of the initial data. Furthermore, the method naturally captures the waiting time phenomena without requiring any manual intervention.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to give a non-local sufficient condition for generalized Poincaré inequalities, which extends the well-known Bakry-Emery condition. Such generalized Poincaré inequalities have been introduced by W. Beckner in the gaussian case and provide, along the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck flow, the exponential decay of some generalized entropies which interpolate between the $L^2$ norm and the usual entropy. Our criterion improves on results which, for instance, can be deduced from the Bakry-Emery criterion and Holley-Stroock type perturbation results. In a second step, we apply the same strategy to non-linear equations of porous media type. This provides new interpolation inequalities and decay estimates for the solutions of the evolution problem. The criterion is again a non-local condition based on the positivity of the lowest eigenvalue of a Schrödinger operator. In both cases, we relate the Fisher information with its time derivative. Since the resulting criterion is non-local, it is better adapted to potentials with, for instance, a non-quadratic growth at infinity, or to unbounded perturbations of the potential.

Abstract:We present a variational approach for the construction of Leray-Hopf solutions to the non-newtonian Navier-Stokes system. Inspired by the work [OSS18] on the corresponding Newtonian problem, we minimise certain stabilised Weighted Inertia-Dissipation-Energy (WIDE) functionals and pass to the limit of a vanishing parameter in order to recover a Leray-Hopf solution of the non-newtonian Navier-Stokes equations. It turns out that the results differ depending on the rheology of the fluid. The investigation of the non-newtonian Navier-Stokes system via this variational approach is motivated by the fact that it is particularly well suited to gain insights into weak, respectively strong convergence properties for different flow-behaviour exponents and thus into possibly turbulent behaviour of the fluid flow. With this analysis we extend the results of [BS22] to power-law exponents $\tfrac{2d}{d+2} < p < \tfrac{3d+2}{d+2}$, where weak solutions do not satisfy the energy equality and the involved convergence is genuinely weak. Key of the argument is to pass to the limit in the nonlinear viscosity term in the time-dependent setting. For this we provide an elliptic-parabolic solenoidal Lipschitz truncation that might be of independent interest.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the so-called Weighted Inertia-Dissipation-Energy (WIDE) variational approach for the approximation of unsteady Leray-Hopf solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes system. Initiated in [56], this variational method is here extended to the case of non-Newtonian fluids with power-law index $r\geq11/5$ in three space dimensions and large nonhomogeneous data. Moreover, boundary conditions are not imposed on some parts of boundaries, representing, e.g., outflows. Correspondingly, natural boundary conditions arise from the minimization. In particular, at walls we recover boundary conditions of Navier-slip type. At outflows and inflows, we obtain the condition $-\frac12|\boldsymbol{v}|^2\boldsymbol{n}+\mathbb{T}\boldsymbol{n}=0$. This provides the first theoretical explanation for the onset of such boundary conditions.

Abstract:A new derivation of the Bernoulli equation for water waves in three-dimensional rotating and translating coordinate systems is given. An alternative view on the Bateman-Luke variational principle is presented. The variational principle recovers the boundary value problem governing the motion of potential water waves in a container undergoing prescribed rigid-body motion in three dimensions. A mathematical theory is presented for the problem of three-dimensional interactions between potential surface waves and a floating structure with interior potential fluid sloshing. The complete set of equations of motion for the exterior gravity-driven water waves, and the exact nonlinear hydrodynamic equations of motion for the linear momentum and angular momentum of the floating structure containing fluid, are derived from a second variational principle.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the study of a Dirichlet boundary value problem for a system of two coupled anisotropic Darcy–Forchheimer–Brinkman equations on a bounded Lipschitz domain in Rn(n=2,3) . Using variational methods and fixed point techniques, we obtain a well‐posedness result in L2 ‐based Sobolev spaces for sufficiently small data. As an application, we investigate numerically the lid‐driven flow problem in a square cavity saturated with a bidisperse porous medium and analyze the effect of various physical parameters on the fluid motion.

Abstract:Motions of continuous media presenting singularities are associated with phenomena involving shocks, interfaces or material surfaces. The equations representing evolutions of these media are irregular through geometrical manifolds. A unique continuous medium is conceptually simpler than several media with surfaces of singularity. To avoid the surfaces of discontinuity in the theory, we transform the model by considering a continuous medium taking intoaccount more complete internal energies expressed in gradient developments associated with the variables of state. Nevertheless, resulting equations of motion are of an higher order than those of the classical models: they lead to non-linear models associated with more complex integration processes on the mathematical level as well as on the numerical point of view. In fact, such models allow a precise study of singular zones when they have a non negligible physical thickness. This is typically the case for capillarity phenomena in fluids or mixtures of fluids in which interfacial zones are transition layers between phases or layers between fluids and solid walls. Within the framework of mechanics for continuous media, we propose to deal with the functional point of view considering globally the equations of the media as well as the boundary conditions associated with these equations. For this aim, we revisit the d'Alembert-Lagrange principle of virtual works which is able to consider the expressions of the works of forces applied to a continuous medium as a linear functional value on a space of test functions in the form of virtual displacements. At the end, we analyze examples corresponding to capillary fluids. This analysis brings us to numerical or asymptotic methods avoiding the difficulties due to singularities in simpler -but with singularities- models.

Abstract:This work investigates variational frameworks for modeling stochastic dynamics in incompressible fluids, focusing on large-scale fluid behavior alongside small-scale stochastic processes. The authors aim to develop a coupled system of equations that captures both scales, using a variational principle formulated with Lagrangians defined on the full flow, and incorporating stochastic transport constraints. The approach smooths the noise term along time, leading to stochastic dynamics as a regularization parameter approaches zero. Initially, fixed noise terms are considered, resulting in a generalized stochastic Euler equation, which becomes problematic as the regularization parameter diminishes. The study then examines connections with existing stochastic frameworks and proposes a new variational principle that couples noise dynamics with large-scale fluid motion. This comprehensive framework provides a stochastic representation of large-scale dynamics while accounting for fine-scale components. The evolution of the small-scale velocity component is governed by a linear Euler equation with random coefficients, influenced by large-scale transport, stretching, and pressure forcing.

On discrete analogues of potential vorticity for variational shallow water systems

Abstract:We outline how discrete analogues of the conservation of potential vorticity may be achieved in Finite Element numerical schemes for a variational system which has the particle relabelling symmetry, typically shallow water equations. We show that the discrete analogue of the conservation law for potential vorticity converges to the smooth law for potential vorticity, and moreover, for a strong solution, is the weak version of the potential vorticity law. This result rests on recent results by the author with T. Pryer concerning discrete analogues of conservation laws in Finite Element variational problems, together with an observation by P. Hydon concerning how the conservation of potential vorticity in smooth systems arises as a consequence of the linear momenta. The purpose of this paper is to provide all the necessary information for the implementation of the schemes and the necessary numerical tests. A brief tutorial on Noether's theorem is included to demonstrate the origin of the laws and to demonstrate that the numerical method follows the same basic principle, which is that the law follows directly from the Lie group invariance of the Lagrangian.

Abstract:The flow of Ree-Eyring and Casson non-Newtonian fluids is investigated using a variational principle to optimize the total stress. The variationally-obtained solutions are compared to the analytical solutions derived from the Weissenberg-Rabinowitsch-Mooney equation and the results are found to be identical within acceptable numerical errors and modeling approximations.

Abstract:Recently, M. Tsukamoto (New approach to weighted topological entropy and pressure, Ergod. Theory Dyn. Syst. 43 (2023) 1004-1034) used a new approach to define the weighted topological entropy and pressure. Inspired by his ideas, we introduce the relative weighted topological entropy and pressure for factor maps and establish several variational principles. One of these results involves a question raised by D. Feng and W. Huang (Variational principle for weighted topological pressure, J. Math. Pures Appl. 106 (2016) 411-452), whether there is a relative version of the weighted variation principle. In this paper, we try to establish such variational principle. Furthermore, we generalize the Ledrappier and Walters' type relative variational principle to the weighted version.

Abstract:We present a novel variational derivation of the Maxwell-GLM system, which augments the original vacuum Maxwell equations via a generalized Lagrangian multiplier approach (GLM) by adding two supplementary acoustic subsystems and which was originally introduced by Munz et al. for purely numerical purposes in order to treat the divergence constraints of the magnetic and the electric field in the vacuum Maxwell equations within general-purpose and non-structure-preserving numerical schemes for hyperbolic PDE. Among the many mathematically interesting features of the model are: i) its symmetric hyperbolicity, ii) the extra conservation law for the total energy density and, most importantly, iii) the very peculiar combination of the basic differential operators, since both, curl-curl and div-grad combinations are mixed within this kind of system. A similar mixture of Maxwell-type and acoustic-type subsystems has recently been also forwarded by Buchman et al. in the context of a reformulation of the Einstein field equations of general relativity in terms of tetrads. This motivates our interest in this class of PDE, since the system is by itself very interesting from a mathematical point of view and can therefore serve as useful prototype system for the development of new structure-preserving numerical methods. Up to now, to the best of our knowledge, there exists neither a rigorous variational derivation of this class of hyperbolic PDE systems, nor do exactly energy-conserving and asymptotic-preserving schemes exist for them. The objectives of this paper are to derive the Maxwell-GLM system from an underlying variational principle, show its consistency with Hamiltonian mechanics and special relativity, extend it to the general nonlinear case and to develop new exactly energy-conserving and asymptotic-preserving finite volume schemes for its discretization.

Homogenization of the 2D Euler system: lakes and porous media

Abstract:This work is devoted to the long-standing open problem of homogenization of 2D perfect incompressible fluid flows, such as the 2D Euler equations with impermeable inclusions modeling a porous medium, and such as the lake equations. The main difficulty is the homogenization of the transport equation for the associated fluid vorticity. In particular, a localization phenomenon for the vorticity could in principle occur, which would rule out the separation of scales. Our approach combines classical results from different fields to prevent such phenomena and to prove homogenization towards variants of the Euler and lake equations: we rely in particular on the homogenization theory for elliptic equations with stiff inclusions, on criteria for unique ergodicity of dynamical systems, and on complex analysis in form of extensions of the Radó-Kneser-Choquet theorem.

Abstract:A variational principle is presented for the Navier-Stokes equations in the case of a contained boundary-driven, homogeneous, incompressible, viscous fluid. Based upon making the fluid's total viscous dissipation over a given time interval stationary subject to the constraint of the Navier-Stokes equations, the variational problem looks overconstrained and intractable. However, introducing a nonunique velocity decomposition, u(x,t)=phi(x,t) + nu(x,t), "opens up" the variational problem so that what is presumed a single allowable point over the velocity domain u corresponding to the unique solution of the Navier-Stokes equations becomes a surface with a saddle point over the extended domain (phi,nu). Complementary or dual variational problems can then be constructed to estimate this saddle point value strictly from above as part of a minimization process or below via a maximization procedure. One of these reduced variational principles is the natural and ultimate generalization of the upper bounding problem developed by Doering and Constantin. The other corresponds to the ultimate Busse problem which now acts to lower bound the true dissipation. Crucially, these reduced variational problems require only the solution of a series of linear problems to produce bounds even though their unique intersection is conjectured to correspond to a solution of the nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations.

Abstract:Most conventional numerical models employ partial differential equations (PDEs) to describe seepage flow problems and use weighted residual and finite difference solution techniques to solve the PDEs. These PDEs are established in view of a spatial point, which mathematically stems from the infinitesimal concept. An alternative approach to such problems is developed. It applies an energy approach, i.e., the Lagrange's equations, to the representation of the seepage flow system, instead of directly resorting to the PDEs. The Lagrange's functional is established on a representative volume element (RVE) by integrating the energy of the RVE. Following a Lagrange formulation, the variation of the functional is conducted with regard to appropriate generalized coordinates. Then the resulting integral equations are considered with the description from the Lagrangian frame into the Eulerian frame for an improved accuracy. Afterwards, the equations are numerically discretized with a cell-centered finite volume method. Finally, two seepage front estimation schemes are presented—one scheme is implemented by local mesh refinement and the other scheme by seepage front movement. The resulting model is a true energy formulation, developed without reference to the partial differential momentum equations. Numerical examples are demonstrated and show that the model generates physically sound results.

Abstract:In this paper, we use a generic and general variational method to obtain solutions to the flow of generalized Newtonian fluids through circular pipes and plane slits. The new method is not based on the use of the Euler-Lagrange variational principle and hence it is totally independent of our previous approach which is based on this principle. Instead, the method applies a very generic and general optimization approach which can be justified by the Dirichlet principle although this is not the only possible theoretical justification. The results that were obtained from the new method using nine types of fluid are in total agreement, within certain restrictions, with the results obtained from the traditional methods of fluid mechanics as well as the results obtained from the previous variational approach. In addition to being a useful method in its own for resolving the flow field in circular pipes and plane slits, the new variational method lends more support to the old variational method as well as for the use of variational principles in general to resolve the flow of generalized Newtonian fluids and obtain all the quantities of the flow field which include shear stress, local viscosity, rate of strain, speed profile and volumetric flow rate. The theoretical basis of the new variational method, which rests on the use of the Dirichlet principle, also provides theoretical support to the former variational method.

A mixed variational discretization for non-isothermal compressible flow in pipelines

Abstract:We consider the non-isothermal flow of a compressible fluid through pipes. Starting from the full set of Euler equations, we propose a variational characterization of solutions that encodes the conservation of mass, energy, and entropy in a very direct manner. This variational principle is suitable for a conforming Galerkin approximation in space which automatically inherits the basic physical conservation laws. Three different spaces are used for approximation of density, mass flux, and temperature, and we consider a mixed finite element method as one possible choice of suitable approximation spaces. We also investigate the subsequent discretization in time by a problem adapted implicit time stepping scheme for which exact conservation of mass as well as a slight dissipation of energy and increase of entropy are proven which are due to the numerical dissipation of the implicit time discretization. The main arguments of our analysis are rather general and allow us to extend the approach with minor modification to more general boundary conditions and flow models taking into account friction, viscosity, heat conduction, and heat exchange with the surrounding medium.
