Abstract:This work investigates variational frameworks for modeling stochastic dynamics in incompressible fluids, focusing on large-scale fluid behavior alongside small-scale stochastic processes. The authors aim to develop a coupled system of equations that captures both scales, using a variational principle formulated with Lagrangians defined on the full flow, and incorporating stochastic transport constraints. The approach smooths the noise term along time, leading to stochastic dynamics as a regularization parameter approaches zero. Initially, fixed noise terms are considered, resulting in a generalized stochastic Euler equation, which becomes problematic as the regularization parameter diminishes. The study then examines connections with existing stochastic frameworks and proposes a new variational principle that couples noise dynamics with large-scale fluid motion. This comprehensive framework provides a stochastic representation of large-scale dynamics while accounting for fine-scale components. The evolution of the small-scale velocity component is governed by a linear Euler equation with random coefficients, influenced by large-scale transport, stretching, and pressure forcing.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to model the coupling between large - scale fluid behavior and small - scale stochastic processes in an incompressible fluid through a variational framework. Specifically, the authors aim to develop an equation system that can capture these two scales simultaneously, using a Lagrangian defined over the entire flow and combined with stochastic transport constraints. This method, through time - smoothing the noise term, leads to the emergence of stochastic dynamics as the regularization parameter approaches zero. Initially, a fixed noise term was considered, which led to a generalized stochastic Euler equation. However, as the regularization parameter decreases, this equation becomes intractable. Therefore, the research further explored the connection with existing stochastic frameworks and proposed a new variational principle to couple the noise dynamics with large - scale fluid motion. This comprehensive framework provides a method for stochastically representing large - scale dynamics while considering fine - scale components. The evolution of the small - scale velocity component is controlled by a linear Euler equation with stochastic coefficients, affected by large - scale transport, stretching, and pressure forcing. ### Key points: 1. **Multi - scale problem**: The paper focuses on how to model large - scale fluid behavior and small - scale stochastic processes simultaneously in an incompressible fluid. 2. **Variational principle**: The authors proposed a new variational principle to couple the large - scale and small - scale dynamics through a Lagrangian defined over the entire flow and stochastic transport constraints. 3. **Noise processing**: The method, through time - smoothing the noise term, leads to the emergence of stochastic dynamics as the regularization parameter approaches zero. 4. **Equation system**: The finally proposed equation system can describe the large - scale and small - scale dynamics simultaneously, where the evolution of the small - scale velocity component is controlled by a linear Euler equation. ### Mathematical expressions: - **Fluid displacement**: \[ d\mathbf{x}_t=\mathbf{u}(\mathbf{x}_t, t)dt + \sigma_t(\mathbf{x}_t, t)d\mathbf{W}_t \] - **Effective velocity component**: \[ \mathbf{v}(\mathbf{x}, t)=\mathbf{u}(\mathbf{x}, t)-\mathbf{u}_a(\mathbf{x}, t)+\mathbf{u}_\epsilon(\mathbf{x}, t) \] - **Itô - Stokes drift**: \[ \mathbf{u}_a = \frac{1}{2}\nabla\cdot\mathbf{a}+\sigma_t\nabla\cdot\sigma_t \] - **Stratonovich form of Itô - Stokes drift**: \[ \mathbf{u}_a^\circ=\frac{1}{2}\nabla\cdot\mathbf{a}-\frac{1}{2}\sigma_t\nabla\cdot\sigma_t \] ### Conclusion: By proposing a new variational principle, this paper successfully couples large - scale fluid dynamics with small - scale stochastic processes, providing a new method for understanding and modeling complex fluid systems. This method can not only describe multi - scale fluid dynamics more accurately, but also reduce uncertainty in numerical simulations and improve the accuracy of predictions.
