Abstract:Let $f:X\to X$ be a hereditarily locally connected continuum homeomorphism and denote respectively by $P(f)$, $AP(f)$ and $\Omega(f)$, the sets of periodic points, almost periodic points and the non-wandering points of $f$. We show that any $\omega$-limit set (resp. $\alpha$-limit set) is minimal. Moreover, we show that $\Omega(f)=AP(f)$. We also prove that if $P(f)=\emptyset$, then there exists a unique minimal set. On the other hand, if $P(f)\neq\emptyset$ then we prove that any infinite minimal set has the adding machine structure and the absence of Li-Yorke pairs. Consequently, we partially solve the positive entropy conjecture which remains open even in the case of hereditarily locally connected continuum.

Accumulation points of normalized approximations

Abstract:Building on classical aspects of the theory of Diophantine approximation, we consider the collection of all accumulation points of normalized integer vector translates of points $q\alpha$ with $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and $q\in\mathbb{Z}$. In the first part of the paper we derive measure theoretic and Hausdorff dimension results about the set of $\alpha$ whose accumulation points are all of $\mathbb{R}^d$. In the second part we focus primarily on the case when the coordinates of $\alpha$ together with $1$ form a basis for an algebraic number field $K$. Here we show that, under the correct normalization, the set of accumulation points displays an ordered geometric structure which reflects algebraic properties of the underlying number field. For example, when $d=2$, this collection of accumulation points can be described as a countable union of dilates (by norms of elements of an order in $K$) of a single ellipse, or of a pair of hyperbolas, depending on whether or not $K$ has a non-trivial embedding into $\mathbb{C}$.

On disjoint stationary sequences

Abstract:We answer a question of Krueger by obtaining disjoint stationary sequences on successive cardinals. The main idea is an alternative presentation of a mixed support iteration, using it even more explicitly as a variant of Mitchell forcing. We also use a Mahlo cardinal to obtain a model in which $\aleph_2 \notin I[\aleph_2]$ and there is no disjoint stationary sequence on $\aleph_2$, answering a question of Gilton.

Abstract:We characterize a $k$-th accumulation point of pseudo-effective thresholds of $n$-dimensional varieties as certain invariant associates to a numerically trivial pair of an $(n-k)$-dimensional variety. This characterization is applied towards Fujita's log spectrum conjecture for large $k$.

Abstract:In this article, we study the relationship among maximal green sequences, complete forward hom-orthogonal sequences and stability functions in abelian length categories. Mainly, we firstly give a one-to-one correspondence between maximal green sequences and complete forward hom-orthogonal sequences via mutual constructions, and then prove that a maximal green sequence can be induced by a central charge if and only if it satisfies crossing inequalities. As applications, we show that crossing inequalities can be computed by $c$-vectors for finite dimensional algebras; finally, we give the Rotation Lemma for finite dimensional Jacobian algebras.

Abstract:We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an inverse sequence $S_0 \leftarrow S_1 \leftarrow \dots$ indexed by natural numbers to have ${\rm lim}^1S=0$. This condition can be treated as a transfinite version of the Mittag-Leffler condition. We consider inverse sequences in an arbitrary abelian category having a generator and satisfying Grothendieck axioms ${\rm (AB3)}$ and ${\rm (AB4^*)}.$ We also show that the class of inverse sequences $S$ such that ${\rm lim}\: S={\rm lim}^1 S=0$ is the least class of inverse sequences containing the trivial inverse sequence and closed with respect to small limits and a certain type of extensions.

Abstract:Motivated by the Polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa (PFR) Conjecture, we develop a theory of locality in sumsets, with applications to John-type approximation and sets with small doubling. First we show that if $A \subset \mathbb{Z}$ with $|A+A| \le (1-\epsilon) 2^d |A|$ is non-degenerate then $A$ is covered by $O(2^d)$ translates of a $d$-dimensional generalised arithmetic progression ($d$-GAP) $P$ with $|P| \le O_{d,\epsilon}(|A|)$; thus we obtain one of the polynomial bounds required by PFR, under the non-degeneracy assumption that $A$ is not efficiently covered by $O_{d,\epsilon}(1)$ translates of a $(d-1)$-GAP. We also prove a stability result showing for any $\epsilon,\alpha>0$ that if $A \subset \mathbb{Z}$ with $|A+A| \le (2-\epsilon)2^d|A|$ is non-degenerate then some $A' \subset A$ with $|A'|>(1-\alpha)|A|$ is efficiently covered by either a $(d+1)$-GAP or $O_{\alpha}(1)$ translates of a $d$-GAP. This `dimension-free' bound for approximate covering makes for a stark contrast with exact covering, where the required number of translates grows exponentially with $d$. We further show that if $A \subset \mathbb{Z}$ is non-degenerate with $|A+A| \le (2^d + \ell)|A|$ and $\ell \le 0.1 \cdot 2^d$ then $A$ is covered by $\ell+1$ translates of a $d$-GAP $P$ with $|P| \le O_d(|A|)$; this is tight, in that $\ell+1$ cannot be replaced by any smaller number. The above results also hold for $A \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, replacing GAPs by a suitable common generalisation of GAPs and convex bodies. In this setting the non-degeneracy condition holds automatically, so we obtain essentially optimal bounds with no additional assumption on $A$. These results are all deduced from a unifying theory, in which we introduce a new intrinsic structural approximation of any set, which we call the `additive hull', and develop its theory via a refinement of Freiman's theorem with additional separation properties.

Abstract:Maximal green sequences appear in the study of Fomin-Zelevinsky's cluster algebras. They are useful for computing refined Donaldson-Thomas invariants, constructing twist automorphisms and proving the existence of theta bases and generic bases. We survey recent progress on their existence and properties and give a representation-theoretic proof of Greg Muller's theorem stating that full subquivers inherit maximal green sequences. In the appendix, Laurent Demonet describes maximal chains of torsion classes in terms of bricks generalizing a theorem by Igusa.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abeilian group. A sequence $S$ with terms from $G$ is zero-sum if the sum of terms in $S$ equals zero. It is a minimal zero-sum sequence if no proper, nontrivial subsequence is zero-sum. The maximal length of a minimal zero-sum subsequence in $G$ is the Davenport constant, denoted $D(G)$. For a rank 2 group $G=C_n \oplus C_n$, it is known that $D(G)=2n-1$. However, the structure of all maximal length minimal zero-sum sequences remains open. If every such sequence contains a term with multiplicity $n-1$, then $C_n \oplus C_n$ is said to have Property B, and it is conjectured that this is true for all rank 2 groups $C_n \oplus C_n$. In this paper, we show that Property B is multiplicative, namely, if $G=C_n \oplus C_n$ and $G=C_m \oplus C_m$ both satisfy Property B, with $m, n\geq 3$ odd and $mn>9$, then $C_{mn}\oplus C_{mn}$ satisfies Property B also. Combined with previous work in the literature, this reduces the question of establishing Property B to the prime cases, and in such case the complete structural description of the sequence follows.

p-adic integrals and linearly dependent points on families of curves I

Abstract:We prove that the set of `low rank' points on sufficiently large fibre powers of families of curves are not Zariski dense. The recent work of Dimitrov-Gao-Habegger and Kühne (and Yuan) imply the existence of a bound which is exponential in the rank, and the Zilber-Pink conjecture implies a bound which is linear in the rank. Our main result is a (slightly weaker) linear bound for `low ranks'. We also prove analogous results for isotrivial families (with relaxed conditions on the rank) and for solutions to the $S$-unit equation, where the bounds are now sub-exponential in the rank. Our proof involves a notion of the Chabauty-Coleman(-Kim) method in families (or, in some sense, for simply connected varieties). For Zariski non-density, we use the recent work of Blàzquez-Sanz, Casale, Freitag and Nagloo on Ax-Schanuel theorems for foliations on principal bundles.

Abstract:We present an abstract framework for asymptotic analysis of convergence based on the notions of eventual families of sets that we define. A family of subsets of a given set is called here an "eventual family" if it is upper hereditary with respect to inclusion. We define accumulation points of eventual families in a Hausdorff Topological space and define the "image family" of an eventual family. Focusing on eventual families in the set of the integers enables us to talk about sequences of points. We expand our work to the notion of a "multiset" which is a modification of the concept of a set that allows for multiple instances of its elements and enable the development of "multifamilies" which are either "increasing" or "decreasing". The abstract structure created here is motivated by, and feeds back to, our look at the convergence analysis of an iterative process for asymptotically finding a common fixed point of a family of operators.

Abstract:Recently, MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisor functions were shown to link partitions, quasimodular forms, and q-multiple zeta values. In this paper, we explore many further properties and extensions of these. Firstly, we address a question of Ono by producing infinite families of MacMahon-like functions that approximate the colored partition functions (and indeed other eta quotients). We further explore the MacMahon-like functions and discover new and suggestive arithmetic structure and modular completions.

Abstract:Given a martingale sequence of random fields that satisfies a natural assumption of boundedness, it is shown that the pointwise limit of this sequence can be modified in such a way that a certain class of moduli of continuity is preserved. That is, if every element of the sequence admits a given modulus of continuity, one can construct a modification of the limiting random field so that this new field also admits the same modulus of continuity. Additionally, it is shown that requiring further smoothness and a stronger notion of boundedness for the original sequence guarantees further smoothness of the limiting field and a stronger mode of convergence to this limit. Moreover, the modulus of continuity is also preserved for the derivatives.

Abstract:We introduce strong distributivity, a strengthening of distributivity, which implies preservation of ccness and stationarity, afterwards showing a stronger version of the Easton Lemma. We also introduce a new framework for working with arbitrary orders on products of sets. Both concepts are applied together to answer two questions of Krueger using a new version of Mitchell's Forcing.

Abstract:Sequences diverge either because they head off to infinity or because they oscillate. Part 1 constructs a non-Archimedean framework of infinite numbers that is large enough to contain asymptotic limit points for non-oscillating sequences that head off to infinity. It begins by defining Archimedean classes of infinite numbers. Each class is denoted by a prototype sequence. These prototypes are used as asymptotes for determining leading term limits of sequences. By subtracting off leading term limits and repeating, limits are obtained for a subset of sequences called here ``smooth sequences". $\mathbb{I}_n$ is defined as the set of ratios of limits of smooth sequences. It is shown that $\mathbb{I}_n$ is an ordered field that includes real, infinite and infinitesimal numbers.
