Abstract:In recent years, computing has become an important part of the way we teach and learn physics. Teachers, both at high school and college levels, now use computational activities in many of their courses. Physics departments are offering specialized courses and degrees in computational physics. And many countries are adding programming or computational thinking to their secondary science education standards. Although we know more about how to teach computation, that's only half the picture; we need to know how to assess it. In this paper, we provide a snapshot of some commonly used assessment activities and forms.

Abstract:Computational thinking has been a recent focus of education research within the sciences. However, there is a dearth of scholarly literature on how best to teach and to assess this topic, especially in disciplinary science courses. Physics classes with computation integrated into the curriculum are a fitting setting for investigating computational thinking. In this paper, we lay the foundation for exploring computational thinking in introductory physics courses. First, we review relevant literature to synthesize a set of potential learning goals that students could engage in when working with computation. The computational thinking framework that we have developed features 14 practices contained within 6 different categories. We use in-class video data as existence proofs of the computational thinking practices proposed in our framework. In doing this work, we hope to provide ways for teachers to assess their students' development of computational thinking, while also giving physics education researchers some guidance on how to study this topic in greater depth.
On the Prevalence and Nature of Computational Instruction in Undergraduate Physics Programs across the United States

Abstract:A national survey of physics faculty was conducted to investigate the prevalence and nature of computational instruction in physics courses across the United States. 1246 faculty from 357 unique institutions responded to the survey. The results suggest that more faculty have some form of computational teaching experience than a decade ago, but it appears that this experience does not necessarily translate to computational instruction in undergraduate students' formal course work. Further, we find that formal programs in computational physics are absent from most departments. A majority of faculty do report using computation on homework and in projects, but few report using computation with interactive engagement methods in the classroom or on exams. Specific factors that underlie these results are the subject of future work, but we do find that there is a variation on the reported experience with computation and the highest degree that students can earn at the surveyed institutions.

Abstract:High school science classrooms across the United States are answering calls to make computation a part of science learning. The problem is that there is little known about the barriers to learning that computation might bring to a science classroom or about how to help students overcome these challenges. This case study explores these challenges from the perspectives of students in a high school physics classroom with a newly revamped, computation-integrated curriculum. Fostering Computational Thinking

Abstract:Students taking introductory physics are rarely exposed to computational modeling. In a one-semester large lecture introductory calculus-based mechanics course at Georgia Tech, students learned to solve physics problems using the VPython programming environment. During the term 1357 students in this course solved a suite of fourteen computational modeling homework questions delivered using an online commercial course management system. Their proficiency with computational modeling was evaluated in a proctored environment using a novel central force problem. The majority of students (60.4%) successfully completed the evaluation. Analysis of erroneous student-submitted programs indicated that a small set of student errors explained why most programs failed. We discuss the design and implementation of the computational modeling homework and evaluation, the results from the evaluation and the implications for instruction in computational modeling in introductory STEM courses.

Abstract:From a department being resistant to change to students not buying into the new computational activities, the challenges that are faced with integrating computation into the physics undergraduate curriculum are varied. The Partnership for Integration of Computation into Undergraduate Physics (PICUP) aims to expand the role of computation in the undergraduate physics curriculum. The research presented in this paper is part of a larger project examining the role of the PICUP workshop in facilitating both the integration of computation into classrooms and developing a supportive community to support this integration. An important part of providing the necessary supports for integration is understanding and categorizing the problems members of this community of integrators face when integrating computation in their courses. Through individual and group interviews, we discuss the barriers to integration that new and experienced community members of PICUP have experienced in the past or perceive could exist in the future.

A Journey in Implementing Computational Physics from the Ground Up

Abstract:This chapter narrates the journey of developing and integrating computing into the physics curriculum through three consecutive courses, each tailored to the learners' level. It starts with the entry-level "Physics Playground in Python" for high school and freshman students with no programming experience, designed in the spirit of the "Hello World" approach. At the sophomore and junior level, students from all sciences and engineering disciplines learn "Scientific Computing with Python" in an environment based on the "Two Bites at Every Apple" approach. Ultimately, upper undergraduate and entry-level graduate students take "Computational Physics," to develop their skills in solving advanced problems using complex numerical algorithms and computational tools. This journey showcases the increasing complexity and sophistication of computational tools and techniques that can be incorporated into the physical science curriculum, serving as a guide for educators looking to integrate computing into their teaching. It also aims to inspire students by showcasing the impact and potential of computational methods in science education and research.

Abstract:Writing and argumentation are critical to both professional physics and physics education. However, the skill of making an extended argument in writing is often overlooked in physics classrooms, apart from certain practices like lab notebooks or mathematical proofs. Computation is also critical to both professional physics and, increasingly, physics education. In recent years we have begun to develop a class of assignment, known as a computational essay, to both leverage the creative affordances of computation and help students build their argumentative writing skills. Computational essays are a type of essay or report that combine text and code to express an idea or make an argument, usually written in notebook software. In this article, we describe the motivation and philosophy behind computational essays, as well as initial results from a pilot implementation in an introductory undergraduate electricity and magnetism course.

How Physics Students Develop Disciplinary Computational Literacy

Abstract:Computation has revolutionized science and is gradually making its way into science teaching and learning. However, we currently lack theoretical frameworks to make sense of how students learn to use computation as a disciplinary tool. In this study, we propose disciplinary computational literacy as a productive theoretical lens on this subject. This theoretical perspective views computation as a new type of literacy consisting of material, cognitive, and social elements. We argue that these elements will necessarily vary by discipline and use case studies of two pairs of students writing computational essays in an intermediate physics course to examine how disciplinary computational literacy looks and is built at an undergraduate level. Through these case studies we see the pairs leveraging the different elements of their computational literacy to both engage with and produce computational literature in their discipline, while also engaging in a process of epistemic negotiation between their interests, the course goals, available tools, and their basis of computational literacy. These cases show how computational literacy can highlight the ways in which scientific computing helps students build disciplinary understanding and also shows that computational essays, as a genre of computational literature, are a useful epistemic form for developing computational literacy.

Abstract:Computational Thinking (CT) is still a relatively new term in the lexicon of learning objectives and science standards. There is not yet widespread agreement on the precise definition or implementation of CT, and efforts to assess CT are still maturing, even as more states adopt K-12 computer science standards. In this article we will try to summarize what CT means for a typical introductory (i.e. high school or early college) physics class. This will include a discussion of the ways that instructors may already be incorporating elements of CT in their classes without knowing it. Our intention in writing this article is to provide a helpful, concise and readable introduction to this topic for physics instructors. We also put forward some ideas for what the future of CT in introductory physics may look like.

Abstract:One way to introduce computation into the physics curriculum is to include it in a standard upper-level physics course. A course in intermediate classical mechanics is well-suited for this purpose. We discuss our approach and examples of student projects on solving differential equations and Liouville’s theorem, projectile motion on a rotating Earth, motion of a charged particle in electric and magnetic fields, and approximate analytical and numerical solutions for a classical model of a molecule. The projects introduce students to these physics topics and develop the students’ computational skills.

Abstract:Computation is intertwined with essentially all aspects of physics research and is invaluable for physicists' careers. Despite its disciplinary importance, integration of computation into physics education remains a challenge and, moreover, has tended to be constructed narrowly as a route to solving physics problems. Here, we broaden Physics Education Research's conception of computation by constructing an epistemic \emph{metamodel} -- a model of modeling -- incorporating insights on computational modeling from the philosophy of science and prior work. The metamodel is formulated in terms of practices, things physicists do, and how these inform one another. We operationalize this metamodel in an educational environment that incorporates making, the creation of shared physical and digital artifacts, intended to promote students' agency, creativity and self-expression alongside doing physics. We present a content analysis of student work from initial implementations of this approach to illustrate the very complex epistemic maneuvers students make as they engaged in computational modeling. We demonstrate how our metamodel can be used to understand student practices, and conclude with implications of the metamodel for instruction and future research.

A Case Study: Novel Group Interactions through Introductory Computational Physics

Abstract:With the advent of high-level programming languages capable of quickly rendering three-dimensional simulations, the inclusion of computers as a learning tool in the classroom has become more prevalent. Although work has begun to study the patterns seen in implementing and assessing computation in introductory physics, more insight is needed to understand the observed effects of blending computation with physics in a group setting. In a newly adopted format of introductory calculus-based mechanics, called Projects and Practices in Physics, groups of students work on short modeling projects -- which make use of a novel inquiry-based approach -- to develop their understanding of both physics content and practice. Preliminary analyses of observational data of groups engaging with computation, coupled with synchronized computer screencast, has revealed a unique group interaction afforded by the practices specific to computational physics -- problem debugging.

Towards a Generalized Assessment of Computational Thinking for Introductory Physics Students

Abstract:Computational thinking in physics has many different forms, definitions, and implementations depending on the level of physics, or the institution it is presented in. In order to better integrate computational thinking in introductory physics, we need to understand what physicists find important about computational thinking in introductory physics. We present a qualitative analysis of twenty-six interviews asking academic (N=18) and industrial (N=8) physicists about the teaching and learning of computational thinking in introductory physics courses. These interviews are part of a longer-term project towards developing an assessment protocol for computational thinking in introductory physics. We find that academic and industrial physicists value students' ability to read code and that Python (or VPython) and spreadsheets were the preferred computational language or environment used. Additionally, the interviewees mentioned that identifying the core physics concepts within a program, explaining code to others, and good program hygiene (i.e., commenting and using meaningful variable names) are important skills for introductory students to acquire. We also find that while a handful of interviewees note that the experience and skills gained from computation are quite useful for student's future careers, they also describe multiple limiting factors of teaching computation in introductory physics, such as curricular overhaul, not having "space" for computation, and student rejection. The interviews show that while adding computational thinking to physics students repertoire is important, the importance really comes from using computational thinking to learn and understand physics better. This informs us that the assessment we develop should only include the basics of computational thinking needed to assess introductory physics knowledge.

Abstract:Computation holds great potential for introducing new opportunities for creativity and exploration into the physics curriculum. At the University of Oslo we have begun development of a new class of assignment called computational essays to help facilitate creative, open-ended computational physics projects. Computational essays are a type of essay or narrative that combine text and code to express an idea or make an argument, usually written in computational notebooks. During a pilot implementation of computational essays in an introductory electricity and magnetism course, students reported that computational essays facilitated creative investigation at a variety of levels within their physics course. They also reported finding this creativity as being both challenging and motivating. Based on these reflections, we argue that computational essays are a useful tool for leveraging the creative affordances of programming in physics education.

Abstract:Undergraduate physics education has greatly benefited from the introduction of computational activities. However, despite the benefits computation has delivered, we still lack a complete understanding of the computationally integrated learning experience from the student perspective. In particular, we are interested in investigating how students develop expert-like perceptions of computation as a practice within the professional physics community. To investigate this aspect of student development, we employ the Communities of Practice framework, which describes how students navigate through a professional community by appropriating the community's practices and goals as personally important. We introduce the construct of a COP-Model as a student's internal representation of a professional community that they develop as they navigate that community. We used this construct to formulate a set of research questions and semistructured interview protocols to explore how five physics students represent the use of computation in their mental models of the global physics community. We foreground these representations in the local academic community established by their instructors in three concurrent computationally integrated physics courses. We find that these students saw computation as a normal and valuable part of physics practice, identified benefits of using computation in alignment with the physics community, struggle with confidence with regards to computation, and demonstrate some expectations for computational proficiency that are misaligned with the physics community. We establish these themes with interview excerpts and discuss implications for instruction and future research.

Abstract:A nation with significant human capital that can govern science and technology will be competent to exist in the future. The success of applying basic science, particularly physics, to numerous technologies is primarily responsible for the advancement of technology today. Physics is a natural science that has made the greatest contribution for the development of many technologies and engineering applications that make life more convenient for humans. As numerous, Physics principles are very abstract and require very depth knowledge and experience to explain to students. The question arises, how to make physics education more engaging, lucid and relevant for students? At this point, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) becomes very beneficial because of its capacity to ease the abstract subject, stimulate interest and enhance learning outcomes in physics education. Despite the importance of ICTs and educational software, these technologies have yet to be incorporated properly into physics education.This article focuses on the contribution of ICT in physics education along with challenges and their remedies. The online link of several ICT platforms that could be utilized in the teaching and learning of physics is also mentioned, which are open source and can be used freely. The benefits of employing instructional software and incorporating ICTs into the physics curriculum are becoming essential in the current scenario. The barriers to ICT integration in the physics classroom are also discussed. It is experienced and recommended that ICT can be used in the form of blended learning as well as potential solutions to the issues that physics teachers /instructors confront.

Abstract:Teaching computation in science courses can enhance science education, but doing so requires that teachers expand the vision of their discipline beyond the traditional view of science presented in most curricula. This article describes a design-based research (DBR) program that included collaboration among high school teachers and professional development leaders in physics and computer science education. Through three years of professional development and teacher-led development, field testing, and refinement of integrated curricular resources, we have combined instructional modeling practices, physical lab materials, and computer programming activities. One of the outcomes is a co-created framework for the integration of computational modeling into physics that is sensitive to teachers' interests and expressed needs in addition to learning goals. This framework merges two evidence-based approaches to teaching: Bootstrap:Algebra, a web-based computing curriculum that emphasizes using multiple representations of functions and scaffolds that make the programming process explicit, and Modeling Instruction in physics, an approach that emphasizes the use of conceptual models, modeling practices and representational tools. In doing so, we uncover the need to balance teachers' visions for integration opportunities with practical instructional needs and emphasize that frameworks for integration need to reflect teachers' values and goals.
