Abstract:One of the biggest obstacles for superhydrophobic films in applications is their poor mechanical resistance. In this research, robust superhydrophobic SiO2 films were constructed on mild steel (MS) for corrosion protection by the combination of rough electrodeposited SiO2 (E-SiO2) films and durable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer with low surface energy. Results show that the PDMS content has a great effect on the microtopography, wettability, roughness, and wear-resistance of the final films. EIS measurements indicate that as-prepared robust superhydrophobic E-SiO2/PDMS films exhibit good corrosion inhibition efficiency of up to 99.99 % for MS substrates in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution.

Abstract:Polymer coatings for steel anticorrosion are usually susceptible to damage by invading water, oxygen and chloride ions, therefore, it is still a great challenge to reduce these corrosive species to penetrate into coatings/substrate interface. Herein, new binary nanoparticles (SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 ) filled polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) composite coatings are developed for anticorrosion application of 304 stainless-steel (304s) by combining with advantages of PDMS, silica and nano-Al 2 O 3 . Surface wettability, chemical compositions, microstructure, corroded morphologies, mechanical properties and thermal stability of the new PDMS composite coatings on the treated 304s sheets are studied, respectively. Subsequently, corrosion resistances of the 304s sheets treated with the composite coatings are also evaluated in corrosive medium (3.5 wt% NaCl solution) through potentiodynamic polarization tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques, respectively. Interestingly, the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 /PDMS composite coatings show superior mechanical properties, desirable stability and excellent corrosion resistance compared to the PDMS coating without adding Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles. Moreover, the PDMS composite coating with Al 2 O 3 content of 7.37% displays the best anticorrosion performance due to excellent barrier effect between the 304s sheets and corrosive species. This work not only presents a simple and cost-efficient approach to exploiting hydrophobic PDMS coatings by use of binary nanoparticles and PDMS matrix, but also paves the way to anticorrosive application for 304s.

Abstract:Two types of protective silane films, bis-1, 2-[triethoxysilyl] ethane (BTSE) and dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS), were deposited on LY12 aluminum alloys with aiding of electrochemical technique. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests show that after silanization the corrosion resistances of Al alloys are increased significantly, especially after deposition at cathodic potentials. A critical deposition potential (CDP), namely -0.8 V, is generally found for each silane system, at which the highest protectiveness is obtained. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that silane films prepared at CDP display the highest uniformity and density. Applying more positive potentials does not facilitate the film formation. On the other hand, when potential shifts more negative the surface of films presents porous morphology, probably due to the intensive evolving of hydrogen bubbling near the surface. Due to the presence of long hydrophobic Dodecyl chain in bone structure, DTMS films display the best barrier properties.

Abstract:In the present work, a pragmatic painting system with promising active protection property is proposed using electrodeposited silica (e-SiO2) interlayer as the nanocontainer of inhibitors. A 10 mu m thick, highly porous and well adherent sol-gel silica film was prepared at mild steel substrate under the aid of electro-assist technique. Such film was capable of embedding desired amount of corrosion inhibitors (polyvinylpyrrolidone and zinc gluconate), upon which the epoxy coating was covered. Both the accelerated corrosion tests on the scratched coating and the in-situ electrochemical measurements of intact sample revealed the significantly improved corrosion resistance of the novel coating system. Abstract:<p>Plasma polymerized hexamethyldisilazane (ppHMDSZ) thin films with specific thickness and density coated on substrates (ppHMDSZ/substrate) to promote the corrosion resistance for the potential applications in metallic implants is reported in this study. Comparing with the conventional anti-corrosion thin film coatings, plasma polymerization method provided an effective, dry, and simpler process, which allowed to prepare dense thin films with the thickness of a few hundred nanometers. This study proposed that the anti-corrosion behavior could be correlated closely to the density of thin film coated on stainless steel (SS) that can be precisely controlled by the plasma deposition time. The physico-chemical properties of the as-prepared ppHMDSZ thin films were evaluated by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), water contact angle (WCA), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The corrosion resistance of the ppHMDSZ coated stainless steel (ppHMDSZ/SS) was improved by depositing ~140 nm in thickness and 1.15 g/cm<sup>3</sup> in density which reduced 90% of the original corrosion performance against the corrosion in Hank's solution, measured by potentiodynamic polarization tests. The resultant ppHMDSZ thin film coatings allowed to protect substrates toward corrosion and can be further applied in implants for tissue engineering and biomaterials.</p>

Abstract:A modified poly(dimethylsiloxane) film with nanopores, fabricated through a scalable and low-cost process, can serve as a protective layer for improving lithium-metal anodes. This film can suppress Li-dendrite formation because of its chemical inertness and mechanical properties. Stable cycling over 200 cycles with an averaged CE of 94.5% is demonstrated at 0.5 mA cm-2 .

Abstract:Thin films of organosilanes have been successfully used as the alternative to toxic chromate coatings for surface pretreatment of metals and alloys. To further improve their corrosion performance, in the present work nano-scaled TiO2 particles were added to the dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS) films coated onto AA2024-T3 substrates, by using either the dip-coating or the cathodically electro-assisted deposition process. The obtained composite films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), water contact angle measurements, Fourier transform reflection-absorption IR (FTRA-IR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that these two techniques (nanoparticles incorporation and the electro-assisted deposition) both facilitate the deposition process of silane films, giving thicker deposit and higher coverage surface along with higher roughness and hydrophobicity, and thereby improve their corrosion resistance. Moreover, the corrosion performance of silane films is further improved by the combined use of nanoparticles modification and electro-assisted deposition.
Preparation of Dtms Films on Ly12 Aluminum Alloys Via Electrochemical Deposition and Their Anti-Corrosive Performance

Abstract:Dodecyltrimethoxysilane(DTMS) films were prepared on LY12 aluminum alloys by electrochemical deposition. FTIR-RA tests showed that the DTMS films were successfully deposited through the chemical bonding between silane agent and Al alloys, i.e., by the formation of Si-O-Al bond. The corrosion inhibition of silane covered alloys was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements in NaCl solutions with a mass fraction of 3.5%. The results show that in comparison with those prepared at open-circuit potential(OCP), the DTMS films deposited at cathodic potentials displayed an enhancement in protectiveness. Furthermore, a "critical potential" were observed, at which the films prepared showed the highest barrier performance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image indicated a potential dependence of surface morphology of silane films. The highest compactness was obtained at the "critical potential". The impedance models of DTMS covered Al alloys in corrosive solutions were also proposed in the present work.

Abstract:Organofunctional silanes recently have emerged as outstanding, environmentally friendly corrosion protectors for metal substrates, compared with conventional chromate treatments. A simple immersion technique is typically used to coat the metal surface with silane films. However, the thickness and uniformity of the films are uncontrolled in this process. This paper proposes a new deposition technique for the silane films on the metal surface, i.e., by electrodeposition. Hydrolyzed silanes are water-soluble, ionized molecules, so they can be deposited on metals by electrodeposition. Various combinations of silane mixtures were tested at different voltages, pH values, bath concentrations, and exposure times on panels of alloy aluminum and mirror-polished ferro-plate. The surface structure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ellipsometry. The resistance of the film to corrosion was investigated by direct current (DC) polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Electrodeposition results in a more organized and uniform film with fewer pores, compared with immersed or dipped films.

Abstract:Aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (APTMS) was used as a silane reagent, and oxygen and water were set as corrosion media, respectively. The mean square displacement (MSD) of oxygen and water molecules in silanized films with different cross-linking degrees (APTMS-OH-1, APTMS-OH-4, APTMS-OH-8, and APTMS-OH-12) were investigated by molecular dynamics simulation to characterize the corrosion inhibition effect of silanized films in different corrosion media. The results showed that compared with in air, the MSD of oxygen and water molecules in silane film was significantly reduced, which indicated that silane film could prevent the diffusion of corrosive medium, thus protecting material. Silane films with various crosslinking degrees have different shielding effects on oxygen and water molecules. The MSD of oxygen in silane films with different crosslinking degrees was: APTMS-OH-1>APTMS-OH-4>APTMS-OH-12>APTMS-OH-8, while the MSD of water in silane films with different crosslinking degrees was: APTMS-OH-1>APTMS-OH-4≈APTMS-OH-12>APTMS-OH-8. The MSD of both oxygen and water molecules was the lowest in silane films with a crosslinking degree of 8, which showed that silane films had the highest shielding effect.
HD-SiO2/SiO2 Sol@PDMS Superhydrophobic Coating with Good Durability and Anti-Corrosion for Protection of Al Sheets

Abstract:Superhydrophobic coatings with excellent water-repellent properties imply a wide range of application areas. However, improvements are needed in terms of stability and complex processing procedures. In the present study, a superhydrophobic coating on Al sheets was prepared by mixing hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS)-modified SiO2 nanoparticles and acid-catalyzed silica sols (HD-SiO2/SiO2 Sol) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) binder. The HD-SiO2 nanoparticles and acid-catalyzed silica sol (SiO2 sol) form a binary graded micro-nanostructure, providing excellent superhydrophobicity (Water Contact Angle = 158.5°, Sliding angle = 0°). Superhydrophobic coatings with excellent water-repellent properties have potential for corrosion prevention. However the commonly used organic resins have poor chemical and mechanical properties. In the present study, the results of outdoor exposure for 30 days, immersion in acid and alkaline solutions for 24 h, grit abrasion, and water impact experiments, respectively, showed that the prepared superhydrophobic coating has good wear resistance. The integrated superhydrophobic coating on the Al sheets exhibited good corrosion inhibition with an efficiency (η) of 98.9%, which is much higher than that of the uncoated sheets. The present study provides a promising approach for producing stable superhydrophobic coatings at a low cost, with the potential to supplant conventional organic resin anti-corrosion coatings.
Robust, scalable and fluorine-free superhydrophobic anti-corrosion coating with shielding functions in marine submerged and atmospheric zones

Abstract:Biomimetic superhydrophobicity endows various substrates with amazing multi-functional properties. However, fragile hierarchical structures, fluorine-containing chemicals usage, and strict requirements for substrate scopes remain thorny challenges. Herein, we constructed a mechanical robust superhydrophobic @PDMS coating with fluorine-free reagents through wide-applicable and substrate-independent spray-coating method. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle meter were used to assess the surface micro-nano structures, chemical compositions, thermal stability and wettability variations. The corrosion resistance of the developed superhydrophobic @PDMS coating was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The corrosion current density ( I corr ) of the substrate reduces by two orders of magnitude after being spray-coated with superhydrophobic @PDMS coating, indicating excellent corrosion resistance in marine submerged zone. In simulated marine atmospheric conditions with high relative humidity, the salt-deliquesce behaviors of single and double NaCl particles on bare and coated Q235 carbon steel surfaces were recorded. In a high humidity atmospheric environment, the instantaneous salt-deliquesce self-coalescence phenomena provides a new type of anti-corrosion mechanism. Furthermore, the prepared superhydrophobic coating can withstand more than 30 tape-peeling cycles and 400 cm abrasion distance, demonstrating good mechanical stability in prospective real-world applications.

Metallization of 3D Printed Polymers and Their Application as a Fully Functional Water-Splitting System

Abstract:In this work, the plating of high-quality amorphous nickel-phosphorous coating with low resistivity of 0.45 µΩ m (298 K) on complex 3D printed polymeric structures with high uniformity is reported. Such a polymer metallization results in an effective conductivity of 4.7 × 104 S m-1. This process also allows flexible structures to maintain their flexibility along with the conductivity. Octet-truss structures with nickel-iron-(oxo) hydroxide nanosheets electrodeposited onto further displays excellent water-splitting performance as catalytic electrodes, i.e., in KOH (1 m, aq), a low oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential of 197 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and Tafel slope of 51 mV dec-1. Using this light-weight electrode with high specific area, strength, and corrosion resistance properties, a fully functional water-splitting system is designed and fabricated through the concentric integration of 3D printed components. A dense polymeric mesh implemented is also demonstrated as an effective separator of hydrogen and oxygen bubbles in this system.
Study of Atomic Layer Deposition Nano-Oxide Films on Corrosion Protection of Al-SiC Composites

Abstract:In recent years, aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) have attracted attention due to their promising properties. However, the presence of ceramic particles in the aluminum matrix renders AMCs a high corrosion rate and makes it challenging to use traditional corrosion protection methods. In this study, atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques were used to deposit HfO2, ZrO2, TiO2, and Al2O3 thin films on AMC reinforced with 20 vol.% SiC particles. Our results indicate that the presence of micro-cracks between the Al matrix and SiC particles leads to severe micro-crack-induced corrosion in Al-SiC composites. The ALD-deposited films effectively enhance the corrosion resistance of these composites by mitigating this micro-crack-induced corrosion. Among these four atomic-layer deposited films, the HfO2 film exhibits the most effective reduction in the corrosion current density of Al-SiC composites in a 1.5 wt% NaCl solution from 1.27 × 10−6 A/cm2 to 5.89 × 10−11 A/cm2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) investigation shows that HfO2 deposited on Al-SiC composites has the largest Rp value of 2.0 × 1016. The HfO2 film on Al-SiC composites also exhibits effective inhibition of pitting corrosion, remaining at grade 10 even after 96 h of a salt spray test.

Abstract:An LY12 aluminum alloy was coated with a self-assembled dodecyl phosphate film by employing a novel surface-modification protocol based on the chemisorption of sodium monododecyl phosphate from aqueous solution. The effect of solution pH on the self-assembled film properties was documented, and the corrosion resistances of the self-assembled film in a Cl − -containing solution and in a marine atmosphere were evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and corrosion morphology analysis. Unlike self-assembled film formed in acidic and alkaline conditions, dodecyl phosphate films formed in neutral solution exhibited a multilayer structure with greater thickness and superior corrosion resistance due to the strong chemisorption and electrostatic attraction that are fostered in neutral solutions.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials have been introduced in polymer coatings to increase the lifetime of metallic materials by providing barrier properties against corrosive species. Corrosion inhibitors can be inserted into a 2D filler to mitigate the corrosion of metallic materials caused by corrosive species. Current drawbacks of this approach include a poorly controlled release of the inhibitor and the incompatibility of the filler and polymer. To achieve long-term anticorrosion performance, a layered silicate (octosilicate) is modified by surface-graft polymerization with a monomer functionalized with a corrosion inhibitor, 8-hydroxyquinoline. A pH-responsive polymer-inhibitor conjugate, poly(methyl methacrylate-co-8-quinolinyl acrylate), is covalently attached to the silicate and then provides a sustainable release of the corrosion inhibitor upon acidification. The corrosion current density of aluminum alloy substrates (AA2024) coated with poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate) embedding the octosilicate containers is decreased due to a synergistic effect of barrier properties provided by the 2D filler and the pH-responsive release of corrosion inhibitor. This conceptual design can be potentially applied to release molecules such as drugs, fertilizers, or pesticides.

Abstract:This paper presents the process of preparing a phosphoric-acid thin anodic oxide composite film on an 18 μm aluminum alloy foil. The parameters of anodizing were adjusted to obtain a thin anodic oxide film, and then the nano-pores of the film were sealed by electrodeposited silane doped with Y3+. A dense and uniform oxide-organic composite film (called TAO-Si@Y film) with a thickness of only about 275 nm was successfully prepared. The structure, morphology, composition and corrosion resistance of the composite film were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy spectroscopy (EDS), potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and neutral salt spray. The silanol groups of the silane reacted with the thin anodic oxide film to form Al-O-Si. The TAO-Si@Y film had a corrosion current density icorr of 9.18 × 10−9 A cm−2 and a low-frequency impedance modulus |Z|0.01 of 2.26 × 106 Ω cm2, which could provide long-term corrosion protection to the Al foil substrate. Furthermore, the influence of the Y3+ doping in silane solution on the composite film was also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, three types of protective silane films, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) and dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS) were prepared on aluminum alloys AA 2024-T3 by electrodeposition technique. The Reflection-Absorption Fourier Transform IR (FTRA-IR) measurements showed that, the silane films were successfully deposited through chemical bonding between silane agents and Al alloys. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests indicated that in comparison with those by conventional “dip-coating” method, silane films electrochemically prepared at cathodic potentials exhibited obviously higher corrosion resistances. “Critical potential” was all observed for each silane system. Silane films prepared at this potential performed the highest corrosion resistance. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images indicated a potential dependence of surface morphology of silane films. The highest compactness was obtained at the “critical potential”. Due to the presence of long hydrophobic dodecyl chain in bone structure, DTMS films displayed the highest barrier properties.
