Abstract:Two new two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers, [FeII(L)2{PdII(SCN)4}] (L1 = 2-methoxypyrazine, 1; and L2 = (E)-3-(phenyldiazenyl)pyridine, 2), were successfully constructed by using square-planar [Pd(SCN)4]2− building blocks. Complex 1 exhibits a complete and one-step spin crossover (SCO) behavior, while 2 exhibits an incomplete and two-step SCO behavior. Further structural insight into the synergy, the flat/flexing [Fe{Pd(SCN)4}]∞ sheets in 1/2 are stabilized by interlayered/intralayered supramolecular interactions.

Abstract:We designed and synthesized a strong fluorescent tetradentate pyridine ligand, 3,6,11,12-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)dibenzo[a,c]phenazine (TPDP), by covalently grafting pyridyl to fluorescent dye dbpz, which can react with the Fe(NCX)2 (X = S and Se) unit, obtaining two new 2D [4 × 4] square-grid compounds, namely, {FeII(TPDP)2(SCN)2·CHCl3·4CH3OH}n (1) and {[FeII(TPDP)2(SeCN)2]·CH2Cl2·4CH3OH}n (2). Both of them show expected one-step spin-crossover (SCO) properties, and complex 2vacuum exhibits a combination of the SCO phenomenon and fluorescence in a synergetic way. The energy transfer mechanism of 2vacuum is verified by the theoretical calculations and experimental results. This study provides an effective strategy to synthesize large conjugated fluorescent ligands using dyes to further form SCO-luminescent bifunctional materials.

Abstract:A composite material, {[Fe(L)(TPPE)0.5 ]⋅3 CH3 OH}n , has been constructed by integrating the spin-crossover (SCO) subunit FeII {diethyl(E,E)-2,2'-[1,2-phenyl-bis(iminomethylidyne)]bis(3-oxobutanoate)-(2-)-N,N',O3 ,O3 '} and the highly luminescent connector 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)-ethene. Its structure contains four staggered 4×4 layers and intercalated methanol. The packing is dominated by considerable H-bonds either between adjacent layers and between layers and guests. A crystal-structure transformation was detected upon removal of the guest molecules. The SCO transition of the solvated crystals is centered at ca. 215 K with a non-symmetrical hysteresis of 25 K wide, and the desolvated [Fe(L)(TPPE)0.5 ]n exhibits gradual SCO without hysteresis. Intriguingly, the intensity of the fluorescence at 460 nm for the latter is maximized at the SCO transition. The energy transfer between luminescent and SCO entities is achievable as confirmed by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Four one-dimensional heterobimetallic coordination polymers {Fe(pic)(2)[M(CN)(4)]}(n) (M = Pd-II (1) and Pt-II (2), pic = 2-picolylamine), and {Fe(pypz)(2)[M(CN)(4)]}(n) (M = Pd-II (3) and Pt-II (4), pypz = 2-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine) have been synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Single-crystal X-ray analyses show that all the compounds are 1D neutral zigzag chain structures in which the planar [M(CN)(4)](2-) anion acts as a mu(2)-bridging ligand, and the two pic/pypz molecules as chelating coligands. Examination of the intermolecular contacts in compounds 1-4 reveals the existence of the hydrogen bonding interactions involving the hydrogen donor groups of the pic and pypz ligands and the nitrogen atoms of the non-bridging cyanide groups of the [M(CN)(4)](2-) anions. Weak pi-pi interactions were also found to be important for the formation of the 3D structures of compounds 3 and 4. The SCO properties of all compounds were confirmed by the detailed structural analyses of the coordination environments of the Fe-II centres, DSC analyses, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit complete SCO behaviour with very narrow thermal hysteresis loops centred near the room temperature (T-1/2 down arrow = 270 K and T-1/2 up arrow = 272 K for 1 and T-1/2 down arrow = 272 K and T-1/2 up arrow = 274 K for 2), whereas 3 and 4 exhibit abrupt SCO at 186 and 180 K, respectively. Compared to the mononuclear species of the pic and pypz ligands, the SCO temperatures are adjusted by the different ligand field strength of the [M(CN)(4))](2-) units. The cooperativity from both the coordination bonds and supramolecular interaction leads to the observation of the hysteresis loops in the Fe-pic systems and the abrupt SCO transition in the Fe-pypz systems. Furthermore, the light-induced excited-spin-state trapping (LIESST) effect was observed for 2.

Abstract:The incorporation of fluorescent properties into spin‐crossover (SCO) materials, aiming at controlling fluorescence via spin‐state transitions for applications in magneto‐optical switching and information processing, represents an appealing research direction. In this study, we prepared two examples of one‐dimensional cyclic chain‐like Fe(II) coordination polymers, denoted as [Fe(DPPC)2(NCS)2]⋅CH3OH⋅o‐C6H4Cl2 (1, DPPC = 3,6‐di‐4‐pyridinyl‐9‐[4‐(4‐pyridinyl)phenyl]‐9H‐carbazole) and [Fe(PDPC)2(NCS)2] (2, PDPC = 3,6‐di(pyridin‐4‐yl)‐9‐phenyl‐9H‐carbazole). Analyses through single‐crystal X‐ray studies and magnetic measurements validate the two‐step SCO behavior of 1 within the temperature range of 50~200 K. Additionally, when combined with temperature‐dependent fluorescence emission spectroscopy, the results demonstrate the coexistence of SCO and fluorescence in 1.

Abstract:Inspired by the well-studied mononuclear spin crossover compound [Fe(H2B(pz)2)2(bipy)], the bipyridine-based bisbidentate ligands 1,2-di(2,2'-bipyridin-5-yl)ethyne (ac(bipy)2) and 1,4-di(2,2'-bipyridine-5-yl)-3,5-dimethoxybenzene (Ph(OMe)2(bipy)2) are used to bridge two [Fe(H2B(pz)2)2] units, leading to the charge-neutral dinuclear iron(II) compounds [{Fe(H2B(pz)2)2}2 μ-(ac(bipy)2)] (1) and [{Fe(H2B(pz)2)2}2 μ-(Ph(OMe)2(bipy)2)] (2), respectively. The spin-crossover properties of these molecules are investigated by temperature-dependent PPMS measurements, Mössbauer, vibrational and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopy. While compound 1 undergoes complete SCO with T1/2 = 125 K, an incomplete spin transition is observed for 2 with an inflection point at 152 K and a remaining high-spin fraction of 42 % below 65 K. The spin transitions of the dinuclear compounds are also more gradual than for the parent compound [Fe(H2B(pz)2)2(bipy)]. This is attributed to steric hindrance between the molecules, limiting intermolecular interactions such as pi-pi-stacking.

Abstract:Chemical composition is leading among numerous factors that determine the spin transition properties of coordination compounds. Classic dicyanometallic bridges {M(CN)2}- are commonly used to build Hofmann-like spin-crossover frameworks, but some extended bridges are also synthetically available. In this paper we describe a successful synthesis of two very similar spin-crossover frameworks that differ in the cyanometallic bridges involved, namely [Fe(etpz)2{Ag(CN)2}2] (1) and {Fe(etpz)2[Ag2(CN)3][Ag(CN)2]} (2) (where etpz = 2-ethylpyrazine). Magnetic and Mössbauer studies demonstrated the occurrence of abrupt one-step high-spin (HS) ↔ low-spin (LS) transitions for both complexes. The spin transition temperatures are T1/2 ↓ = 233 K and T1/2 ↑ = 243 K for 1 and T1/2 ↓ = 188 K and T1/2 ↑ = 191 K for 2 with thermal hysteresis loops of 10 K for 1 and of 3 K for 2. The bridging mononuclear [Ag(CN)2]- units and FeII cations assemble to form the infinite 2D layers in the structure of 1. Interestingly, the compound 2 forms 2D layers of FeII cations bridged by both binuclear [Ag2(CN)3]- and mononuclear [Ag(CN)2]- units. The structures of 1 and 2 comprise different types of intermolecular interactions including Ag···Ag and Ag···Netpz which induce the creation of supramolecular 3D frameworks. The synergy between metallophilic interactions and the spin transition is also confirmed by the variation of Ag···Ag distances during spin crossover. The characterization of such analogues allowed us to analyze in detail the effect of the cyanometallic bridge on the structure of new frameworks and on the bistability in the Hofmann like complexes.

Abstract:Self-assembly of [Hg(SeCN)4]2– tetrahedral building blocks, iron(II) ions, and a series of bis-monodentate pyridyl-type bridging ligands has afforded the new heterobimetallic HgII-FeII coordination polymers {Fe[Hg(SeCN)3]2(4,4′-bipy)2}n (1), {Fe[Hg(SeCN)4](tvp)}n (2), {Fe[Hg(SeCN)3]2(4,4′-azpy)2}n (3), {Fe[Hg(SeCN)4](4,4′-azpy)(MeOH)}n (4), {Fe[Hg(SeCN)4](3,3′-bipy)}n (5) and {Fe[Hg(SeCN)4](3,3′-azpy)}n (6) (4,4-bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, tvp = trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene, 4,4′-azpy = 4,4′-azobispyridine, 3,3-bipy = 3,3′-bipyridine, 3,3′-azpy = 3,3′-azobispyridine). Single-crystal X-ray analyses show that compounds 1 and 3 display a two-dimensional robust sheet structure made up of infinite linear [(FeL)n]2n+ (L = 4,4′-bipy or 4,4′-azpy) chains linked by in situ formed {[Hg(L)(SeCN)3]2}2– anionic dimeric bridges. Complexes 2 and 4–6 define three-dimensional networks with different topological structures, indicating, in combination with complexes 1 and 3, that the polarity, length, rigidity, and conformation of the bridging organic ligand play important roles in the structural nature of the products reported here. The magnetic properties of complexes 1 and 2 show the occurrence of temperature- and light-induced spin crossover (SCO) properties, while complexes 4–6 are in the high-spin state at all temperatures. Abstract:A cyanido-bridged FeII-NbIV spin-crossover complex, [FeII(dpds)2]2[NbIV(CN)8]·6H2O (dpds = 4,4′-dipyridyldisulfide), is synthesized with a three-dimensional coordination network. The network has cyanido bridges to connect the FeII and NbIV sites and dpds as an additional ligand to crosslink the FeII sites. [FeII(dpds)2]2[NbIV(CN)8]·6H2O exhibits a gradual and incomplete spin crossover in which 22% of the high-spin FeII sites change to low-spin FeII sites as the temperature decreases. The calculation indicates that the spin transition occurs sparsely, rather than forming low spin site domains.

Abstract:Copper(I) thiocyanate (CuSCN) has emerged as an excellent hole-transporting semiconductor with applications spanning across electronic and optoelectronic fields. The coordination chemistry of CuSCN allows for extensive structural versatility via ligand modification. In this work, we have developed a synthetic method that reliably produces phase pure [Cu(SCN)(3-XPy)]n complexes (Py = pyridyl; X = OMe, H, Br, and Cl) in a 1:1:1 ratio to yield two-dimensional (2D) structures with a Cu-SCN network. The single crystal structure of [Cu(SCN)(3-OMePy)]n is also reported herein. Complexes with X = OMe and H show similar structures, in which the 2D layers are analogous to the buckled 2D sheets of silicene or blue phosphorene. On the other hand, for complexes with X = Br and Cl, their rippled 2D structures resemble the puckered 2D sheets found in black phosphorene. The variation of the electron-withdrawing ability of the substituent group is found to systematically shift the electronic energy levels and band gaps of the complexes, allowing the 2D CuSCN-based materials to display optical absorptions and emissions in the visible range. In addition, first-principles calculations reveal that the drastic change in the electronic levels is a result of the emergence of the Py ligand electronic states below the SCN states. This work demonstrates that the structural, electronic, and optical properties of 2D Cu-SCN networks can be systematically tailored through ligand modification.

Abstract:Stepped spin crossover (SCO) complexes with three or more spin states have promising applications in high-order data storage, multi-switches and multi-sensors. Further synergy with other functionalities, such as luminescence and dielectric properties, will provide a good chance to develop novel multifunctional SCO materials. Here, the bent pillar ligand and luminescent pyrene guest are integrated into a three-dimensional (3D) Hofmann-type metal-organic framework (MOF) [Fe(dpoda){Au(CN)2}2]·pyrene (dpoda = 2,5-di-(pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole). The magnetic data show an incomplete and two-step SCO behavior with the sequence of 1 ↔ 1/2 ↔ 1/4. The rare bi-directional light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) effect and light-induced stepped thermal relaxation after LIESST are observed. The pyrene guests interact with dpoda ligands via the offset face-to-face π···π interactions to form the intermolecular exciplex emissions. The competion between thermal quenching and stepped SCO property results in a complicated and stepped exciplex fluorescence. Moreover, the stepped dielectric property with higher dielectric permittivity at lower temperature maybe relate to the more frustrated octahedral distortion parameters in the intermediate spin states. Hence, 3D Hofmann-type MOF with bent pillar ligands and fluorescent guests illustrates an effective way toward the development of multifunctional switching materials.

Abstract:We present here the syntheses, crystal structures, and thermal and magnetic properties of a series of mononuclear Fe2+ spin crossover (SCO) complexes of the formula [Fe(bamp)(2)]center dot Anion center dot Solv (Anion = NDS2-, Solv = 2H(2)O, 1(NDS); Anion = BPDS2-, Solv = 4.4H(2)O, 2(BPDS); Anion = ABDS(2-), Solv = Et2O and H2O, 3(ABDS); Anion = DNDS2-, Solv = MeCN, 4(DNDS); bamp = 2,6-pyridinedimethanamine, H2NDS = 1,5-naphthalenedisulphonic acid, H2BPDS = 4,4 '-biphenyldisulphonic acid, H(2)ABDS = 4,4 '-azobenzenedisulfonic acid, H2DNDS = 4,4 '-dinitrostilbene-2,2 '-disulfonic acid). The structures and SCO properties of these complexes can be finely modified by organodisulfonate couteranions. Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed that all these compounds are hydrogen-bonded three-dimensional frameworks constructed from the charge-assisted hydrogen bonds between bamp donors, organodisulfonate acceptors, and/or crystallized solvent molecules. SCO behavior was observed in all four complexes and has been evidenced by detailed structural and magnetic investigations. While 1(NDS) exhibits a sharp cooperative SCO transition with a transition temperature T-1/2 of 247 K, 2(BPDS), 3(ABDS), and 4(DNDS) undergo more gradual SCO transitions with T-1/2 values of 176, 171 and 158 K, respectively. Magneto-structural relationship studies revealed that the tunable SCO properties, including the trend of the transition temperatures and the cooperativity of the SCO transition, are mainly attributable to the size of the organodisulfonate anions. This study shows that in order to exhibit cooperative SCO properties, "efficient" hydrogen bonds directly connecting the SCO centers, rather than those between the SCO centers and the innocent neighboring groups, are preferred.
