Abstract:We present here the syntheses, crystal structures, and thermal and magnetic properties of a series of mononuclear Fe2+ spin crossover (SCO) complexes of the formula [Fe(bamp)(2)]center dot Anion center dot Solv (Anion = NDS2-, Solv = 2H(2)O, 1(NDS); Anion = BPDS2-, Solv = 4.4H(2)O, 2(BPDS); Anion = ABDS(2-), Solv = Et2O and H2O, 3(ABDS); Anion = DNDS2-, Solv = MeCN, 4(DNDS); bamp = 2,6-pyridinedimethanamine, H2NDS = 1,5-naphthalenedisulphonic acid, H2BPDS = 4,4 '-biphenyldisulphonic acid, H(2)ABDS = 4,4 '-azobenzenedisulfonic acid, H2DNDS = 4,4 '-dinitrostilbene-2,2 '-disulfonic acid). The structures and SCO properties of these complexes can be finely modified by organodisulfonate couteranions. Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed that all these compounds are hydrogen-bonded three-dimensional frameworks constructed from the charge-assisted hydrogen bonds between bamp donors, organodisulfonate acceptors, and/or crystallized solvent molecules. SCO behavior was observed in all four complexes and has been evidenced by detailed structural and magnetic investigations. While 1(NDS) exhibits a sharp cooperative SCO transition with a transition temperature T-1/2 of 247 K, 2(BPDS), 3(ABDS), and 4(DNDS) undergo more gradual SCO transitions with T-1/2 values of 176, 171 and 158 K, respectively. Magneto-structural relationship studies revealed that the tunable SCO properties, including the trend of the transition temperatures and the cooperativity of the SCO transition, are mainly attributable to the size of the organodisulfonate anions. This study shows that in order to exhibit cooperative SCO properties, "efficient" hydrogen bonds directly connecting the SCO centers, rather than those between the SCO centers and the innocent neighboring groups, are preferred.

Abstract:A cyanido-bridged FeII-NbIV spin-crossover complex, [FeII(dpds)2]2[NbIV(CN)8]·6H2O (dpds = 4,4′-dipyridyldisulfide), is synthesized with a three-dimensional coordination network. The network has cyanido bridges to connect the FeII and NbIV sites and dpds as an additional ligand to crosslink the FeII sites. [FeII(dpds)2]2[NbIV(CN)8]·6H2O exhibits a gradual and incomplete spin crossover in which 22% of the high-spin FeII sites change to low-spin FeII sites as the temperature decreases. The calculation indicates that the spin transition occurs sparsely, rather than forming low spin site domains.

Abstract:Two bis(tridentate) Schiff base ligands H2L(x) were used to construct three 2×2 grid-type tetranuclear Fe(II) complexes 1-3 to obtain polynuclear spin-crossover materials. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that the spin states of the complexes are related to the substituents of H2L(x), and that spin transition occurs only in complexes 1 and 2, which are derived from a bulky ligand, whereas complex 3 is diamagnetic. The transition temperatures of complexes 1 and 2 are close to room temperature and are dependent on counteranions. The spin transition of complex 1 can be reversibly tuned by the dehydration and hydration process.

Abstract:A trans-isomeric dinuclear complex is synthesized by reacting ligand 4-((1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylene-amino)-4H-1,2,4-triazole (pyrtrz) with [Fe(NCS)(2)] in methanol, i.e. trans-[Fe-2(pyrtrz)(5)(NCS)(4)].7MeOH (trans-1.7MeOH), which shows complete spin-crossover behaviour from the structural point of view and incomplete spin crossover due to the partial loss of guest solvent molecules.

Abstract:Two mononuclear cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(pytpy)(2)](2-NH2-1-NS)(2)center dot MeOH center dot H2O (1) and [Co(pytpy)(2)](4-NH2-1-NS)(2)center dot H2O (2), where pytpy=4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, 2-NH2-1-NS-=2-amino-1-naphthalenesulfonate, and 4-NH2-1-NS-=4-amino-1-naphthalenesulfonate, were synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Single-crystal X-ray analysis reveals that both complexes consist of the [Co(pytpy)(2)](2+) cations, organosulfonate anions, and crystallized solvent molecules. The difference between the two anions is the relative position of the sulfonate and amino groups. Interestingly, the 2-NH2-1-NS- anion with the sulfonate and amino group in adjacent positions, forms hydrogen bonds with the [Co(pytpy)(2)](2+) cation and solvent molecules, while the 4-NH2-1-NS- anion, with the sulfonate and amino groups in para positions, forms a 2D layer structure through hydrogen bonding. Magnetic measurements revealed significant differences in their magnetic properties: while complex 1 exhibits a reversible and gradual spin crossover behavior, complex 2 remains in the high-spin state.

Abstract:Iron(III) mononuclear complexes that involve pentadentate Schiff base ligands and chlorido, azido, cyanido, cyanato, thiocyanato, or selenocyanato coligands were synthesized, structurally characterized, and subjected to a magnetochemical investigation. The Schiff bases were derived either from 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde or the 2-hydroxyacetonaphthone analogues by using an asymmetric 1,6-diamino-4-azahexane. A polymorphism that originated from different pentadentate ligand conformations on the iron center or different arrangements of noncovalent contacts was detected for the thiocyanato complexes. The central iron(III) atoms are mostly in the high-spin states, except for that with the coordinated cyanido ligand. Four complexes that contain the thiocyanato or selenocyanato ligand exhibit spin crossover, centered at the critical temperature (T-c) of 42, 114, 282, and 293 K, respectively. The magnetic data of all compounds were analyzed using the spin Hamiltonian formalism including the zero-field splitting (ZFS) term, and in the case of the spin-crossover compounds, the Ising-like model with vibrations was applied.

Abstract:A mononuclear complex with long alkyl chains, [FeII(H2Bpz2)2(C9bpy)] (1; H2Bpz2 = dihydrobis(1-pyrazolyl)borate, C9bpy = 4,4'-dinonyl-2,2'-bipyridine), was synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies revealed that the Δ- and Λ-forms of the complex co-crystallized in the lattice asymmetric unit, while magnetic measurements unveiled that this complex underwent incomplete one-step spin crossover (SCO) with the transition completeness and temperature depending on the measurement velocity because of slow spin equilibrium. Multivariable approaches such as varying scan rate, annealing the sample, light irradiation and pressure have been adopted to effectively overcome the slow spin equilibrium and thus improve the SCO completeness.

Abstract:Inspired by the well-studied mononuclear spin crossover compound [Fe(H2B(pz)2)2(bipy)], the bipyridine-based bisbidentate ligands 1,2-di(2,2'-bipyridin-5-yl)ethyne (ac(bipy)2) and 1,4-di(2,2'-bipyridine-5-yl)-3,5-dimethoxybenzene (Ph(OMe)2(bipy)2) are used to bridge two [Fe(H2B(pz)2)2] units, leading to the charge-neutral dinuclear iron(II) compounds [{Fe(H2B(pz)2)2}2 μ-(ac(bipy)2)] (1) and [{Fe(H2B(pz)2)2}2 μ-(Ph(OMe)2(bipy)2)] (2), respectively. The spin-crossover properties of these molecules are investigated by temperature-dependent PPMS measurements, Mössbauer, vibrational and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopy. While compound 1 undergoes complete SCO with T1/2 = 125 K, an incomplete spin transition is observed for 2 with an inflection point at 152 K and a remaining high-spin fraction of 42 % below 65 K. The spin transitions of the dinuclear compounds are also more gradual than for the parent compound [Fe(H2B(pz)2)2(bipy)]. This is attributed to steric hindrance between the molecules, limiting intermolecular interactions such as pi-pi-stacking.

Abstract:Numerous Fe(II) spin-crossover (SCO) compounds have been developed in the past decades, while the reports on the SCO materials with halogen atoms acting as coordinating ligands remain rare. In this study, we synthesize three iron(II) halide complexes with a general formula of [FeII(Py5Me2)X]+ (Py5Me2 = 2,6bis[1,1-bis(2-pyridyl)ethyl]pyridine, X = Cl- or Br-) that undergo complete SCO transitions at near room temperature. The SCO properties of these compounds are investigated in detail by magnetic measurements, variable-temperature single-crystal Xray diffractions, and Mo''ssbauer spectra analyses. Because of the good stability of the coordination structures and suitable ligand-field strength, these compounds show robust spin transitions in both solid state and solution.

Abstract:In this chapter, selected results obtained so far on Fe(III) spin crossover compounds are summarized and discussed. Fe(III) spin transition materials of ligands containing chalcogen donor atoms are considered with emphasis on those of N,N-disubstituted-dithiocarbamates, N,N-disubstituted-XY-carbamates (XY=SO, SSe, SeSe), X-xanthates (X=O, S), monothio-beta-diketonates and X-semicarbazones (X=S, Se). In addition, attention is directed to Fe(III) spin crossover systems of multidentate Schiff base-type ligands. Examples of spin inter-conversion in Fe(III) compounds induced by light irradiation are given.

Abstract:Two new salts of a mononuclear tripodal Fe(II) complex were prepared, using ClO4- and Cl-. The ClO4- sample (1) remained HS at low temperatures, similar to the previously reported BF4- analogue. Crystallising with the Cl- anion (2) led to a markedly different crystal packing arrangement, and engendered SCO activity. This has been correlated to the lower crystal packing density in 2 and the coordination complex conformational differences arising due to the packing motifs of 1 and 2. Further, solvent ordering effects have been proposed to facilitate spin transition behaviour in 2.

Abstract:Investigations of spin-crossover in an iron(II) tris(diimine) system, based on the ligands L-1 (4,5-dimethy2-(pyridine-2-yl)imidazole) and L-2 (1-acetic ethyl-2-(pyridine-2-yl)-imidazole), have been presented in this paper. The methyl groups at adjacent sites to the donor atoms in the ligand L1 generated the crossover situation for complexes Fe(L-1)(3)(ClO4-)(2) (1), Fe(L-1)(3)(BF4-)(2) (2), Fe(L-1)(3)(PF6-)(2) (3) and Fe(L-1)(3)(SbF6-)(2) (4), while the acetic ethyl group at the non-coordinating NH site of the ligand L2 resulted in an increase in the ligand field and generated a low-spin (LS) state for the complex Fe(L-2)(3)(ClO4-)(2) (5). Complexes 1 and 5 were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at different spin-states, while the phase purity of complexes 2-4 was confirmed by PXRD. Raman, IR and UV-Vis absorption spectra and magnetic properties of 1-4 were obtained, which revealed the influence of different counter anions on the spin transition temperatures. The blue-shift of IR and Raman spectra, red-shift and decrease in molar absorptivity of UV-Vis absorption spectra all follow the sequence 1 < 3 < 2 < 4. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Spin-Crossover and Coherent Transport Behaviors of a Six-Coordinate Iron(II) Complex with a N4O2 Donor Set

Abstract:Single-molecule spin-crossover (SCO) complexes have been considered to be the promising candidates to design molecular spintronic devices due to their magnetic bistability between the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. By performing extensive density functional theory calculations in combination with the nonequilibrium Green function method, we explore the SCO and coherent transport behaviors of a six-coordinate Fe(II) complex with a N4O2 donor set. The calculated relative total electronic energies imply that the spin transition between the HS and LS states can be achieved by external stimuli in experiments via changing the metal-ligand bond lengths. Based on the calculated transport results, we find that the current through the six-coordinate Fe(II) complex with the LS state sandwiched between gold electrodes is significantly less than that of the HS state due to their significantly different electronic structures. Moreover, the molecular junction with the HS state displays a robust spin-filtering effect, and the current under the small bias voltage is dominated by the spin-down electrons. Interestingly, we observe that the transport properties of this examined Fe(II) complex with the HS and LS states are not sensitive to the detailed anchoring configuration, which is highly desirable in molecular spintronics. These theoretical findings suggest this Fe(II) SCO complex holds great potential in molecular spintronic devices.

Abstract:Three mononuclear spin crossover (SCO) compounds [Fe(2-pic)3]·A2·Solv (A = m-ABS(-), Solv = MeOH, 1; A = p-ABS(-), 2; A = OTf(-), 3) were prepared and characterized magnetically and structurally (2-pic = 2-picolylamine, m-HABS = m-aminobenzenesulfonic acid, p-HABS = p-aminobenzenesulfonic acid, HOTf = trifluoromethanesulfonic acid). Single-crystal X-ray analyses show that they are constructed from the charge-assisted hydrogen bonds between the 2-pic donors and the organosulfonate acceptors, forming the hydrogen-bonded three-dimensional networks for 1 and 2 and one-dimensional columns for 3. While the [Fe(2-pic)3](2+) cations in compounds 1 and 2 are in the meridional (mer-) configuration, it has a facial (fac-) configuration in complex 3. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed the SCO transitions and the SCO properties in all three complexes are quite different. Compound 1 undergoes an abrupt SCO with critical temperatures T1/2↓ = 100 K and T1/2↑ = 103 K, while compound 2 exhibits a gradual SCO with T1/2 = 218 K. Compound 3, with the fac-configuration, has an abrupt SCO transition accompanied by the structural phase transition with critical temperatures T1/2↓ = 333 K and T1/2↑ = 343 K. The SCO transitions were further confirmed by the detailed structural analyses of the coordination environments of the Fe(II) centers in both spin states and also by differential scanning calorimetry. Compared to the famous [Fe(2-pic)3]·A2·Solv compounds in the literature, compound 2 has the highest transition temperature for the mer-[Fe(2-pic)3](2+)-containing compounds, while compound 3 represents the first example of the structurally characterized compound of the fac-[Fe(2-pic)3](2+) motif showing SCO behavior. These results show that the organosulfonate anions are very promising to adjust the hydrogen-bonded structures of the SCO compounds and improve the SCO properties of those structures.

Abstract:Two mononuclear spin-crossover compounds Fe(L-1)(2) (1) and Fe(L-2)(2) (2) {HL1 = 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-N'-[1-(pyridine-2-yl)-butylidene]benzohydrazide, HL2 = 2-hydroxy-N'-[1-(pyridine-2-yl)butylidene]benzohydrazide} were successfully synthesized. The magnetic measurements of the compounds revealed different thermal magnetic behavior. Compound 1 undergoes a gradual complete thermal spin crossover (SCO) with T-1/2 up arrow/down arrow = 243/240 K and a hysteresis loop of 3 K. Compound 2 shows a gradual incomplete SCO during the measurable temperature region with T-1/2 approximate to 330 K. Through the comparison of the magnetic and structural results for 1 and 2 with previously reported related compounds, the alkyl substitutions of the ligand were considered to affect the ligand-field strength and hydrogen-bonding interactions. In addition, photomagnetism results showed an 87 % photoconversion and 36 K of T(LIESST) (LIESST = light-induced excited spin-state trapping) for compound 1. The results enrich the knowledge on how to control the spin-crossover behavior in the new system.

The X-ray structure analysis reveals that complex 1 center dot 13H(2)O is constructed from one-dimensional (1D) {Fe(tz)(3)}(n) (tz = tetrazolate) chains which are linked through the phenyl tethers of the bdt ligands into a 3D microporous framework. In the case of complex 2 center dot solvent, the linear trinuclear [Fe-3(tz)(6)] units are linked by ox(2-) bridges to form ID {Fe-3(tz)(6)(ox)}(n) chains, which are also extended into a 3D microporous framework linked by the bdt ligands. Their frameworks can be simplified as the same topological network (4(6),6(6),8(3))(4(2),6(3),8). The substructure of the ID {Fe(tz)(3)}(n) chain in 1 center dot 13H(2)O consists of spin-crossover (SCO) active Fe1 ions and low spin (LS) Fe2 ions alternately, while the trinuclear unit in 2 center dot solvent contains a partial high spin (HS) Fe1 ion and two terminal HS Fe2 ions. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 center dot 13H(2)O presents an incomplete gradual SCO behavior. Although complex 2 center dot solvent also has the SCO active Fe1 ions, the spin state change is extremely small and the antiferromagnetic property is primarily observed.

Abstract:The interplay between the spin crossover and the structural properties of the complexes in the solid state is still under investigation. In particular the following questions may be asked. What are the structural modifications of the metal coordination sphere at the spin crossover? How are the dimensions and the symmetry of the crystallographic unit cell affected by the spin crossover? Conversely, how may structural properties influence the spin crossover behavior? Do intramolecular parameters account for the features of the spin crossover? What are the relevant characteristics of the crystal packing for the cooperativity? Do the above questions have general answers that can be used for all the spin crossover compounds? This contribution tries to give answers to these questions. The discussion is based on a large structural data set provided in the literature for the six-coordinated iron(II) mononuclear complexes of general formula [FeLn(NCS)2]. The effects of temperature, light and pressure on the X-ray diffraction crystal structures are reviewed. The structural modifications due to the spin crossover are first estimated, these include the expansion and the distortion of the FeN6 octahedron, the isotropic and the anisotropic changes of the unit cell. The influence of the structural properties on the features of the spin crossover is then discussed. For example, intramolecular properties such as Fe-N bond lengths are in general not relevant to account for the spin crossover features. In contrast, hydrogen bonds play a paramount role in the propagation of the spin conversion throughout the crystal lattice.
