Abstract:In physics, the singular heat equation with the Bessel operator is used to explain the basic process of heat transport in a substance with spherical or cylinder symmetry. This paper examines the solution of the Cauchy problem for the heat equation with the Bessel operator acting in the space variable. We obtain some properties of the solution and consider the normalized modified Bessel function of the first kind.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a global existence result for nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations in infinite homogeneous waveguides, R×M, with smooth small data, where M=(M,g) is a Zoll manifold, or a compact revolution hypersurface. The method is based on normal forms, eigenfunction expansion and the special distribution of eigenvalues of the Laplace–Beltrami on such manifolds.

Abstract:The first part of my thesis lays the foundations to generalized Lorentz geometry. The basic algebraic structure of finite-dimensional modules over the ring of generalized numbers is investigated. The motivation for this part of my thesis evolved from the main topic, the wave equation on singular space-times. The second and main part of my thesis is devoted to establishing a local existence and uniqueness theorem for the wave equation on singular space-times. The singular Lorentz metric subject to our discussion is modeled within the special algebra on manifolds in the sense of Colombeau. Inspired by an approach to generalized hyperbolicity of conical-space times due to Vickers and Wilson, we succeed in establishing certain energy estimates, which by a further elaborated equivalence of energy integrals and Sobolev norms allow us to prove existence and uniqueness of local generalized solutions of the wave equation with respect to a wide class of generalized metrics. The third part of my thesis treats three different point value resp. uniqueness questions in algebras of generalized functions

Abstract:In this paper we investigate estimates about the Laplace operator in heat flows of harmonic maps, focusing outside the singularities through spherical coordinates. These estimates can be used in the general Ericksen--Leslie system to obtain higher-order estimates. We consider the problem subject to the $\mathbb{T}^2$ and $\mathbb{T}^3$ boundary conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the nonautonomous heat equation in C[0, 1] with generalized Wentzell boundary conditions. It is shown, under appropriate assumptions, that there exists a unique evolution family for this problem and that the family satisfies various regularity properties. This enables us to obtain, for the corresponding inhomogeneous problem, classical and strict solutions having optimal regularity.

Abstract:Non radiative solutions of the energy critical non linear wave equation are global solutions $u$ that furthermore have vanishing asymptotic energy outside the lightcone at both $t \to \pm \infty$: \[ \lim_{t \to \pm \infty} \| \nabla_{t,x} u(t) \|_{L^2(|x| \ge |t|+R)} = 0, \] for some $R \gt 0$. They were shown to play an important role in the analysis of long time dynamics of solutions, in particular regarding the soliton resolution: we refer to the seminal works of Duyckaerts, Kenig and Merle, see \cite{DKM:23} and the references therein. We show that the set of non radiative solutions which are small in the energy space is a manifold whose tangent space at $0$ is given by non radiative solutions to the linear equation (described in \cite{CL24}). We also construct nonlinear solutions with an arbitrary prescribed radiation field.

Heat and Wave kernel expansions for stationary spacetimes

Abstract:The generator of time-translations on the solution space of the wave equation on stationary spacetimes specialises to the square root of the Laplacian on Riemannian manifolds when the spacetime is ultrastatic. Its spectral analysis therefore constitutes a generalization of classical spectral geometry. If the spacetime is spatially compact the spectrum is discrete and admits a wave-trace expansion at time zero. A Weyl law for the eigenvalues and a wave-trace formula was shown in a previous paper and related to the geometry of the space of null-geodesics. In this paper we investigate the relation to heat kernel coefficients and residues of zeta functions in this context and compute the second non-zero term in the wave-trace expansion. This second coefficient is an analogue in the category of stationary spacetimes of the second heat kernel coefficient of the Laplace operator. The general formula is quite involved but reduces to the usual term involving the scalar curvature when specialised to ultra-static spacetimes.

Abstract:In this article, we study the existence of multiple solutions for the singular semilinear elliptic equation involving critical Sobolev-Hardy exponents -Δu-μu|x|2=α|u|2*(s)-2u|x|s+βα(x)|u|r-2u,x∈Rℕ. By means of the concentration-compactness principle and minimax methods, we obtain infinitely many solutions which tend to zero for suitable positive parameters α, β.

Abstract:We consider the wave and Klein-Gordon equations on the real hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ ($n \geq2$) in a framework based on weak-$L^{p}$ spaces. First, we establish dispersive estimates on Lorentz spaces in the context of $\mathbb{H}^{n}$. Then, employing those estimates, we prove global well-posedness of solutions and an exponential asymptotic stability property. Moreover, we develop a scattering theory and construct wave operators in such singular framework.

Abstract:Case's method obtains solutions to the radiative transport equation as superpositions of elementary solutions when the specific intensity depends on one spatial variable. In this paper, we find elementary solutions when the specific intensity depends on three spatial variables in three-dimensional space. By using the reference frame whose z-axis lies in the direction of the wave vector, the angular part of each elementary solution becomes the singular eigenfunction for the one-dimensional radiative transport equation. Thus Case's method is generalized.

Abstract:In order to get a finite element formulation to analyze singular heat flux fields, the weak form of basic equations and boundary conditions describing the 2D heat conduction eigenproblems is derived for the sectorial domains in the vicinity of the interfacial crack tip. By using the eigenfunction expansion technique, a one-dimension finite element formulation is then developed to determine the eigensolutions to the 2D heat conduction problem at the crack tip, which discretizes the sectorial domain circumferenially. A global equation is finally obtained as a second-order characteristic matrix equation. By solving this second-order matrix equation, the eigensolutions to the 2D heat conduction problems in singular heat flux fields can be obtained. Numerical examples demonstrate the correctness and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:We consider the Klein--Gordon equation associated with the Laplace--Beltrami operator $\Delta$ on real hyperbolic spaces of dimension $n\!\ge\!2$; as $\Delta$ has a spectral gap, the wave equation is a particular case of our study. After a careful kernel analysis, we obtain dispersive and Strichartz estimates for a large family of admissible couples. As an application, we prove global well--posedness results for the corresponding semilinear equation with low regularity data.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the fully nonlinear wave equations on the product space R3×T with quadratic nonlinearities and on R2×T with cubic nonlinearities, respectively. It is shown that for the small initial data satisfying some space-decay rates at infinity, these nonlinear equations admit global smooth solutions when the corresponding partial null conditions hold and while have almost global smooth solutions when the partial null conditions are violated. Our proof relies on the Fourier mode decomposition of the solutions with respect to the periodic direction, the efficient combinations of time-decay estimates for the solutions to the linear wave equations and the linear Klein-Gordon equations, and the global weighted energy estimates. In addition, an interesting auxiliary energy is introduced. As a byproduct, our results can be applied to the 4D irrotational compressible Euler equations of polytropic gases or Chaplygin gases on R3×T, the 3D relativistic membrane equation and the 3D nonlinear membrane equation on R2×T.
Singular solutions for a class of traveling wave equations arising in hydrodynamics

Abstract:We give an exhaustive characterization of singular weak solutions for ordinary differential equations of the form $\ddot{u}\,u + \frac{1}{2}\dot{u}^2 + F'(u) =0$, where $F$ is an analytic function. Our motivation stems from the fact that in the context of hydrodynamics several prominent equations are reducible to an equation of this form upon passing to a moving frame. We construct peaked and cusped waves, fronts with finite-time decay and compact solitary waves. We prove that one cannot obtain peaked and compactly supported traveling waves for the same equation. In particular, a peaked traveling wave cannot have compact support and vice versa. To exemplify the approach we apply our results to the Camassa-Holm equation and the equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude, and show how the different types of singular solutions can be obtained varying the energy level of the corresponding planar Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:The Rayleigh equation, which is the linearized Euler equations near a shear flow in vorticity formulation, is a key ingredient in the study of the long time behavior of solutions of linearized Euler equations, in the study of the linear stability of shear flows for Navier-Stokes equations and in particular in the construction of the so called Tollmien-Schlichting waves. It is also a key ingredient in the study of vorticity depletion. In this article we locally describe the solutions of Rayleigh equation near critical points of any order of degeneracy, and link their values on the boundary with their behaviors at infinity.

Abstract:We study positive solutions of an equation with singular nonlinearities. The equation arises in the study of equilibrium states of thin films. Under weak assumptions on the nonlinearity, we show that for N >= 3 there exists a family of radial solutions {u(alpha)}(alpha>0) with u(alpha)(0) = alpha and each of them is oscillatory in ( 0, infinity). We obtain then a singular radial solution in ( 0, infinity) by taking the limit alpha --> 0. Meanwhile, using the solutions obtained in ( 0, infinity), we show some existence results for the corresponding Neumann eigenvalue problem on a ball.

Abstract:We consider a family of singular Volterra integral equations that appear in the study of monotone travelling-wave solutions for a family of diffusion-convection-reaction equations involving the $p$-Laplacian operator. Our results extend the ones due to B.\,Gilding for the case $p=2$. The fact that $p\neq2$ modifies the nature of the singularity in the integral equation, and introduces the need to develop some new tools for the analysis. The results for the integral equation are then used to study the existence and properties of travelling-wave solutions for doubly nonlinear diffusion-reaction equations in terms of the constitutive functions of the problem.
