Abstract:This paper has the main purpose to assist researchers and students in choosing the appropriate statistical test for studies that examine one variable or more variables. The aim of this article is to consider the role which statistical methods can sensibly take in some relevant fields. Other objective of writing this paper is to provide the algorithm of choosing the statistical techniques in the data analysis. This article is concentrated to define data analysis and the concept of data preparation. Then, the data analysis will be discussed. The article covers a brief outline of the variables, an understanding of quantitative and qualitative variables and measure of central tendency. This article will also try to apprise the reader with the basic research techniques that are utilized while conducting various studies. Finally, there is a focus on parametric and nonparametric tests for data analysis and various strategies in this concept.

Abstract:Aims and Objectives: Types of study designs and statistical method utilized by authors for articles published in foreign journals has been widely documented. Few such attempts are also done for articles published in Chinese and Pakistani Journals but no such attempt has been documented for articles published in Indian Medical Journals. This manuscript is an attempt to appraising articles published in Indian Medical Journals in terms of study designs and statistical methods used. Materials and Methods: All the original articles published in 2009 from 14 PubMed indexed Indian Medical Journals were analyzed for study designs and statistical methods. These journals were Annals of Indian Academy of Neurology (AIAN), Indian Journal of Orthopedics (IJOrtho), Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine (IJCCM), Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology (IJDVL), Indian Journal of Nephrology (IJN), Indian Journal of Dermatology (IJD), Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO), Indian Journal of Urology (IJU), Indian Journal of Anesthesia (IJA), Indian Journal of Psychiatry (IJPsy), Indian Pediatrics (IP), Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR), Indian Journal of Medical Science (IJMS) and Indian Journal of Community Medicine (IJCM). Values are shown as frequency and percentages. Results: Majority of the published articles were based on prospective study designs (60.8%). Clinical trials were as method of study was documented in 12.5% articles. Three most common tests were t test (23.2%), Chi-square test (21.9%) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) (10.5%). However, statistical methods were not at all used by 26.2% articles. Conclusions: Knowledge regarding prospective studies and statistical methods related to contingency table, t test and ANOVA needs to be updated to the Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.

Abstract:Most textbooks for biostatistics only explain each individual statistical test with its mathematical formula. However, it is crucial to understand the relationships among the statistical methods and to properly integrate the individual methods to effectively apply them to real clinical research settings. The choice for valid statistical tests greatly depends on the dependency of the sample and the number of independent variables in the analyses as well as the measurement scale of dependent variables and independent variables. In this report, many statistical tests such as the two sample t-test, ANOVA, non-parametric tests, chi-square test, log-rank test, multiple linear regression, logistic regression, mixed model, and Cox regression model are addressed through hypothetical examples. The key for a successful analysis of a clinical experiment is to adopt suitable statistical tests. This study presents a guideline to clinical researchers for selecting valid and powerful statistical tests in their study design. The choice of suitable statistical tests increases the reliability of analytical results and therefore the possibility of accepting a researcher's clinical hypothesis. The proposed flowchart of appropriate tests of statistical inference will be of help to many clinical researchers to their study.

Abstract:Experimental Biology and Medicine, Ahead of Print. With the increasing number and variety of clinical trials and observational data analyses, producers and consumers of clinical research must have a working knowledge of an array of statistical methods. Our goal with this body of work is to highlight common types of data and analyses in clinical research. We provide a brief, yet comprehensive overview of common data types in clinical research and appropriate statistical methods for analyses. These include continuous data, binary data, count data, multinomial data, and time-to-event data. We include references for further studies and real-world examples of the application of these methods. In summary, we review common continuous and discrete data, summary statistics for said data, common hypothesis tests and appropriate statistical tests, and underlying assumption for the statistical tests. This information is summarized in tabular format, for additional accessibility.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the misuse or improperly use situation of statistical methods on medical postgraduates' dissertations.Methods Cross-sectional study was used for the 192 dissertations of Zhejiang University which submitted in last 5 years,dissertation was selected by multistage stratified random sampling.Results Misuse or improperly use rate of the 192 dissertations in research design,statistical description,statistical inference,result expression/interpretation and the overall were 76.6％,70.3％,8.9％,50.0％ and 94.8％;chi-square test for the misuse or improperly use rate showed that submit time (x2 =19.86,P =0.001) was significant in research design,college (x2 =5.67,P =0.017)、supervisor title (x2 =7.59,P =0.006) and submit time (x2 =14.14,P =0.015) were significant in statistical description,college (x2 =8.75,P =0.003) was significant in result expression/interpretation,college,supervisor title,submit time and degree were not significant in statistical inference and the overall.Conclusions Misuse or improperly use rate is quite high in medical postgraduates' dissertations,education of medical statistics should be paid more attention to strengthen the statistical knowledge and skills of postgraduate.

This is because there are a wide variety of tests available. Abstract:Reporting of statistical analysis is essential in any clinical and translational research study. However, medical research studies sometimes report statistical analysis that is either inappropriate or insufficient to attest to the accuracy and validity of findings and conclusions. Published works involving inaccurate statistical analyses and insufficient reporting influence the conduct of future scientific studies, including meta-analyses and medical decisions. Although the biostatistical practice has been improved over the years due to the involvement of statistical reviewers and collaborators in research studies, there remain areas of improvement for transparent reporting of the statistical analysis section in a study. Evidence-based biostatistics practice throughout the research is useful for generating reliable data and translating meaningful data to meaningful interpretation and decisions in medical research. Most existing research reporting guidelines do not provide guidance for reporting methods in the statistical analysis section that helps in evaluating the quality of findings and data interpretation. In this report, we highlight the global and critical steps to be reported in the statistical analysis of grants and research articles. We provide clarity and the importance of understanding study objective types, data generation process, effect size use, evidence-based biostatistical methods use, and development of statistical models through several thematic frameworks. We also provide published examples of adherence or non-adherence to methodological standards related to each step in the statistical analysis and their implications. We believe the suggestions provided in this report can have far-reaching implications for education and strengthening the quality of statistical reporting and biostatistical practice in medical research.

Abstract:This review summarizes statistical methods likely to be needed by researchers. It is not a replacement for a statistics book, and almost no symbols or mathematics are used. It seeks to guide researchers to the appropriate methods and to make them aware of some common pitfalls. Sections deal with methods for quantitative outcomes, both basic and more advanced, and parallel methods for qualitative or categorical outcomes. Reference is made to papers using the more advanced methods in the European Respiratory Journal in order that their relevance may be appreciated. The paper seeks to improve the quality of papers submitted to the European Respiratory Journal, to reduce the revisions to papers required of authors, and to enable readers of the journal to gain more insight into the interpretation of results.

Abstract:Aims: The content of public health research is often statistically complex. This review seeks to assess the breadth of statistical literacy required to understand this material, with a view to informing practitioners’ statistical training. Methods: We review the statistical content of original research articles published in 2011 in four major public health journals. Categories of statistical methodologies are identified and their frequency of use recorded. Methods’ “usefulness” in terms of the extent to which their understanding increases accessibility to the literature is assessed. Results: A total of 482 articles were reviewed and 30 categories of methods identified. Along with descriptive statistics (467 articles), regression analyses were also common, with logistic regression (206 articles) more than twice as prevalent as linear regression (95 articles). More complex regression models for use with clustered data were also commonly encountered, appearing in 96 articles. Conclusions: The public health literature features a wide variety of statistical methods, some of which are advanced. To ensure the literature remains accessible, training for public health practitioners should include statistical training that maximizes breadth as well as depth of understanding.

Abstract:This is a text in methods of applied statistics for researchers who design and conduct experiments, perform statistical inference, and write technical reports. These research activities rely on an adequate knowledge of applied statistics. The reader both builds on basic statistics skills and learns to apply them to applicable scenarios without over-emphasis on the technical aspects. Demonstrations are a very important part of this text. Mathematical expressions are exhibited only if they are defined or intuitively comprehensible. This text may be used as a self review guidebook for applied researchers or as an introductory statistical methods textbook for students not majoring in statistics. Discussion includes essential probability models, inference of means, proportions, correlations and regressions, methods for censored survival time data analysis, and sample size determination. The author has over twenty years of experience applying statistical methods to study design and data analysis in collaborative medical research setting as well as on teaching. He received his PhD from the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California and post-doctoral training at Harvard Department of Biostatistics. Hang Lee has held faculty appointments at the UCLA School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. He is currently a biostatistics faculty member at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Abstract:Obesity rates have been increasing over recent decades, causing significant concern among policy makers. Excess body fat, commonly measured by body mass index, is a major risk factor for several common disorders including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, placing a substantial burden on health care systems. To guide effective public health action, we need to understand the complex system of intercorrelated influences on body mass index. This paper, based on all eligible articles searched from Global health, Medline and Web of Science databases, reviews both classical and modern statistical methods for body mass index analysis. We give a description of each of these methods, exploring the classification, links and differences between them and the reasons for choosing one over the others in different settings. We aim to provide a key resource and statistical library for researchers in public health and medicine to deal with obesity and body mass index data analysis.

When our data follow normal distribution, parametric tests otherwise nonparametric methods are used to compare the groups. There are different methods used to test the normality of data, including numerical and visual methods, and each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Abstract:Objectives: To describe formal, external to programme methods for size estimation of high-risk populations and compare execution challenges and validity of results. Design: A cross-sectional HIV risk behavioural and biological survey was implemented among 24, 10 and five female sex workers, high-risk men who have sex with men and injecting drug user survey groups, respectively. Size estimates were calculated using three formal methods: capture-recapture, the multiplier method and the reverse tracking method (RTM), a new method. Methods: Estimates were compared with each other and programme data. Results: In general, when appropriately executed, formal methods produced smaller estimates to programme data, although the RTM tended to be closer to programme estimates. Conclusions: Capture-recapture requires some knowledge of site location. It can be used as a community mobilization measure at the initiation of a programme. The multiplier method presumes the existence of high quality external data and requires care in selecting the appropriate multiplier. All size estimation methods require careful planning and a full understanding of population dynamics and limitations of data. Before selecting a size estimation method, one must be aware of the strengths, weaknesses and applicability of each method. Use of size estimation methods in large-scale programmes should be considered carefully with adequate importance given to planning and implementation.

Abstract:Missing values commonly happen in the realm of medical research, which is regarded creating a lot of bias in case it is neglected with poor handling. However, while dealing with such challenges, some standard statistical methods have been already developed and available, yet no credible method is available so far to infer credible estimates. The existing data size gets lowered, apart from a decrease in efficiency happens when missing values is found in a dataset. A number of imputation methods have addressed such challenges in early scholarly works for handling missing values. Some of the regular methods include complete case method, mean imputation method, Last Observation Carried Forward (LOCF) method, Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), Mean Imputation (Mean), Hot Deck (HOT), Regression Imputation (Regress), K-nearest neighbor (KNN),K-Mean Clustering, Fuzzy K-Mean Clustering, Support Vector Machine, and Multiple Imputation (MI) method. In the present paper, a simulation study is attempted for carrying out an investigative exploration into the efficacy of the above mentioned archetypal imputation methods along with longitudinal data setting under missing completely at random (MCAR). We took out missingness from three cases in a block having low missingness of 5% as well as higher levels at 30% and 50%. With this simulation study, we concluded LOCF method having more bias than the other methods in most of the situations after carrying out a comparison through simulation study.

[Application of Statistics on Chronic-Diseases-relating Observational Research Papers].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the application of statistics on Chronic-diseases-relating observational research papers which were recently published in the Chinese Medical Association Magazines, with influential index above 0.5.METHODS:Using a self-developed criterion, two investigators individually participated in assessing the application of statistics on Chinese Medical Association Magazines, with influential index above 0.5. Different opinions reached an agreement through discussion.RESULTS:A total number of 352 papers from 6 magazines, including the Chinese Journal of Epidemiology, Chinese Journal of Oncology, Chinese Journal of Preventive Medicine, Chinese Journal of Cardiology, Chinese Journal of Internal Medicine and Chinese Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, were reviewed. The rate of clear statement on the following contents as: research objectives, t target audience, sample issues, objective inclusion criteria and variable definitions were 99.43%, 98.57%, 95.43%, 92.86% and 96.87%. The correct rates of description on quantitative and qualitative data were 90.94% and 91.46%, respectively. The rates on correctly expressing the results, on statistical inference methods related to quantitative, qualitative data and modeling were 100%, 95.32% and 87.19%, respectively. 89.49% of the conclusions could directly response to the research objectives. However, 69.60% of the papers did not mention the exact names of the study design, statistically, that the papers were using. 11.14% of the papers were in lack of further statement on the exclusion criteria. Percentage of the papers that could clearly explain the sample size estimation only taking up as 5.16%. Only 24.21% of the papers clearly described the variable value assignment. Regarding the introduction on statistical conduction and on database methods, the rate was only 24.15%. 18.75% of the papers did not express the statistical inference methods sufficiently. A quarter of the papers did not use 'standardization' appropriately. As for the aspect of statistical inference, the rate of description on statistical testing prerequisite was only 24.12% while 9.94% papers did not even employ the statistical inferential method that should be used.CONCLUSION:The main deficiencies on the application of Statistics used in papers related to Chronic-diseases-related observational research were as follows: lack of sample-size determination, variable value assignment description not sufficient, methods on statistics were not introduced clearly or properly, lack of consideration for pre-requisition regarding the use of statistical inferences.

Abstract:Data analysis and visualization are essential for exploring and communicating findings in medical research, especially in epidemiological surveillance. Data on COVID-19 diagnosed cases and mortality from crowdsourced website COVID-19 India Tracker, Census 2011, and Google Mobility reports has been used to develop a real-time analytics and monitoring system for the COVID-19 outbreak in India. We have developed a dashboard application for data visualization and analysis of several indicators to follow the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic using data science techniques. A district-level tool for basic epidemiological surveillance, in an interactive and user-friendly manner, which includes time trends, epidemic curves, and key epidemiological parameters such as growth rate, doubling time, and effective reproduction number, has been estimated. This demonstrates the application of data science methods and epidemiological techniques in public health decision-making while addressing the gap of timely and reliable decision-aiding tools. Abstract:Using administrative patient-care data such as Electronic Health Records (EHR) and medical/pharmaceutical claims for population-based scientific research has become increasingly common. With vast sample sizes leading to very small standard errors, researchers need to pay more attention to potential biases in the estimates of association parameters of interest, specifically to biases that do not diminish with increasing sample size. Of these multiple sources of biases, in this paper, we focus on understanding selection bias. We present an analytic framework using directed acyclic graphs for guiding applied researchers to dissect how different sources of selection bias may affect estimates of the association between a binary outcome and an exposure (continuous or categorical) of interest. We consider four easy-to-implement weighting approaches to reduce selection bias with accompanying variance formulae. We demonstrate through a simulation study when they can rescue us in practice with analysis of real-world data. We compare these methods using a data example where our goal is to estimate the well-known association of cancer and biological sex, using EHR from a longitudinal biorepository at the University of Michigan Healthcare system. We provide annotated R codes to implement these weighted methods with associated inference.
