Abstract:We demonstrate high-resolution amplified pulse shaping using an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) at a center-wavelength of 795nm. The output pulses have energy of 200mJ/pulse and a transform-limited pulsewidth of 150fs. A spectral modulation of over 40 features is achieved in a single pulse. We characterize the pulses using the STRUT (Spectrally and Temporally Resolved Upconversion Technique). Using predistortion techniques, we demonstrate that the pulses can be shaped in amplitude and phase. We create a complex pulse shape with hyperbolic secant amplitude and hyperbolic tangent frequency sweep, which is useful for applications in adiabatic rapid passage experiments.

Abstract:We review the field of femtosecond pulse shaping, in which Fourier synthesis methods are used to generate nearly arbitrarily shaped ultrafast optical wave forms according to user specification. An emphasis is placed on programmable pulse shaping methods based on the use of spatial light modulators. After outlining the fundamental principles of pulse shaping, we then present a detailed discussion of pulse shaping using several different types of spatial light modulators. Finally, new research directions in pulse shaping, and applications of pulse shaping to optical communications, biomedical optical imaging, high power laser amplifiers, quantum control, and laser-electron beam interactions are reviewed.

Abstract:We describe a system for generating frequency-chirped and amplitude-shaped pulses on time scales from sub-nanosecond to ten nanoseconds. The system starts with cw diode-laser light at 780 nm and utilizes fiber-based electro-optical phase and intensity modulators, driven by an arbitrary waveform generator, to generate the shaped pulses. These pulses are subsequently amplified to several hundred mW with a tapered amplifier in a delayed double-pass configuration. Frequency chirps up to 5 GHz in 2 ns and pulse widths as short as 0.15 ns have been realized.

Abstract:Direct compression of femtosecond optical pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser oscillator was realized with a cholesteric liquid crystal acting as a nonlinear 1D periodic Bragg grating. With a 6-um thick sample, the pulse duration could be compressed from 100 to 48 femtoseconds. Coupled-mode equations for forward and backward waves were employed to simulate the dynamics therein and good agreement between theory and experiment was obtained.

Abstract:High-energy tens (10s) to hundreds (100s) petawatt (PW) lasers are key tools for exploring frontier fundamental researches such as strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED), and the generation of positron-electron pair from vacuum. Recently, pulse compressor became the main obstacle on achieving higher peak power due to the limitation of damage threshold and size of diffraction gratings. Here, we propose a feasible multistep pulse compressor (MPC) to increase the maximum bearable input and output pulse energies through modifying their spatiotemporal properties. Typically, the new MPC including a prism pair for pre-compression, a four-grating compressor (FGC) for main compression, and a spatiotemporal focusing based self-compressor for post-compression. The prism pair can induce spatial dispersion to smooth and enlarge the laser beam, which increase the maximum input and output pulse energies. As a result, as high as 100 PW laser with single beam or more than 150 PW through combining two beams can be obtained by using MPC and current available optics. This new optical design will simplify the compressor, improve the stability, and save expensive gratings/optics simultaneously. Together with the multi-beam tiled-aperture combining method, the tiled-grating method, larger gratings, or negative chirp pulse based self-compression method, several 100s PW laser beam is expected to be obtained by using this MPC method in the future, which will further extend the ultra-intense laser physics research fields.

Abstract:We present an integrated pulse compression method for chirped optical pulses based on silicon photonic crystal (PhC) line-defect waveguides. The PhC waveguide structure and dimensions, including the radius of the hole and the thickness of the slab, are carefully designed for effective pulse compression in a short waveguide. In the optimized PhC waveguide, the pulse is effectively compressed and a compression factor, which is defined as the ratio of the output pulse width with respect to the input pulse width, as small as 0.096 is achieved. Analysis shows that the compression effect depends on the initial chirp, the peak power, and the width of the input pulse. In order to realize the best compression, the PhC waveguide length should be carefully chosen to balance the initial chirp, dispersion and nonlinearity of the waveguide.

Abstract:We have developed low-dispersion (1480 l/mm), resonance-free, diffraction gratings made of dielectric materials resistant to femtosecond laser damage $(SiO_{2}/HfO_{2})$. A 14 cm diameter sample was fabricated resulting in a mean diffraction efficiency of 99.1% at {\lambda} = 810 nm with 0.4% uniformity using equipment which can fabricate gratings up to 1m diagonal. The implementation of these gratings in the compression of 30 fs pulses in an out-of-plane geometry can result in compressor efficiencies of ~95%. The measured laser absorption is 500x lower than current ultrafast petawatt-class compressor gratings which will enable a substantial increase in average power handling capabilities of these laser systems.

Abstract:We suggest and demonstrate an all-fiber pulse shaper for synthesizing transform-limited flat-top waveforms. The proposed scheme can be easily scaled down to the (sub-)picosecond regime while offering low polarization dependence and extremely low insertion loss. It is based on a cascade of two long-period fiber gratings. As a proof-of-concept experiment, we report the generation of transform-limited flat-top pulses with full-width at half- maximum duration of 2 ps, which is over two times faster than the shortest transform-limited flat-top pulse ever generated with an all-fiber filter.

Abstract:Abstract Integrated femtosecond pulse and frequency comb sources are critical components for a wide range of applications, including optical atomic clocks, microwave photonics, spectroscopy, optical wave synthesis, frequency conversion, communications, lidar, optical computing8, and astronomy9. The leading approaches for on-chip pulse generation rely on mode locking inside microresonator with either third-order nonlinearity10 or with semiconductor gain. These approaches, however, are limited in noise performance, wavelength tunability and repetition rates. Alternatively, sub-picosecond pulses can be synthesized without mode-locking, by modulating a continuous-wave (CW) single-frequency laser using a cascade of electro-optic (EO) modulators. This method is particularly attractive due to its simplicity, robustness, and frequency-agility but has been realized only on a tabletop using multiple discrete EO modulators and requiring optical amplifiers (to overcome large insertion losses), microwave amplifiers, and phase shifters. Here we demonstrate a chip-scale femtosecond pulse source implemented on an integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonic platform, using cascaded low-loss electro-optic amplitude and phase modulators and chirped Bragg grating, forming a time-lens system. The device is driven by a CW distributed feedback (DFB) chip laser and controlled by a single CW microwave source without the need for any stabilization or locking. We measure femtosecond pulse trains (520 fs duration) with a 30-GHz repetition rate, flat-top optical spectra with a 10-dB optical bandwidth of 12.6 nm, individual comb-line powers above 0.1 milliwatt, and pulse energies of 0.54 picojoule. Our results represent a tunable, robust and low-cost integrated pulsed light source with CW-to-pulse conversion efficiencies an order of magnitude higher than achieved with previous integrated sources. Our pulse generator can find applications from ultrafast optical measurement to networks of distributed quantum computers.

Abstract:We report the study and demonstration of a new laser pulse shaping system capable of generating linearly polarized picosecond laser pulses with variable temporal profiles including symmetric intensity distributions, as well as non-symmetric distributions, which are highly desired by various applications. It is found that both high transmittance and high stability of the shaped pulse can be achieved simultaneously when crystals are set at a specific phase delay through fine control of the crystal temperature. Although multi-crystal pulse stacking with different configurations was reported before particularly for flattop pulse generation, this new configuration leads to new opportunities for many potential applications over a wide range of laser wavelengths, pulse repetition rate, time structures and power levels. A practical double-pass temporal shaping configuration that significantly reduces the number of crystals is also proposed in this paper as a result of present study.

Abstract:We explore parabolic pre-shaping as a means of generating and amplifying ultrashort pulses. We develop a theoretical framework for modeling the technique and use its conclusions to design a femtosecond fiber amplifier. Starting from 9 ps pulses, we obtain 4.3 $\mu$J, nearly transform-limited pulses 275 fs in duration, simultaneously achieving over 40 dB gain and 33-fold compression. Finally, we show that this amplification scheme is limited by Raman scattering, and outline a method by which the pulse duration and energy may be further improved and tailored for a given application.

Femtosecond Electron Pulse Generation And Measurement For Diffractive Imaging Of Isolated Molecules

Abstract:We have constructed an electron gun that delivers highly charged femtosecond electron pulses to a target with kHz repetition rate. Electron pulses are generated by femtosecond laser pulses in a photoemission process and are accelerated up to 100 kV and compressed to sub-picosecond duration. Compression is essential to compensate for the space charge effect that increases the size of electron pulses in all directions significantly. The pulses are compressed transversely by magnetic lenses and longitudinally by the longitudinal electric field of a radio-frequency cavity. The longitudinal compression is achieved by decelerating the electrons in the leading edge of the pulse, and accelerating the electrons in the trailing edge of the pulse. This results in the pulse compressing and reaching the minimum pulse duration at a known distance from the compression cavity. The short pulse duration and high repetition rate will be essential to observe sub-picosecond dynamic processes in molecules in gas phase with a good signal to noise ratio. A streak camera, consisting of a millimeter-sized parallel plate capacitor, was used to measure the pulse duration in situ.
Silicon Photonic Microresonator-Based High-Resolution Line-by-Line Pulse Shaping

Abstract:Optical pulse shaping stands as a formidable technique in ultrafast optics, radio-frequency photonics, and quantum communications. While existing systems rely on bulk optics or integrated platforms with planar waveguide sections for spatial dispersion, they face limitations in achieving finer (few- or sub-GHz) spectrum control. These methods either demand considerable space or suffer from pronounced phase errors and optical losses when assembled to achieve fine resolution. Addressing these challenges, we present a foundry-fabricated six-channel silicon photonic shaper using microresonator filter banks with inline phase control and high spectral resolution. Leveraging existing comb-based spectroscopic techniques, we devise a novel system to mitigate thermal crosstalk and enable the versatile use of our on-chip shaper. Our results demonstrate the shaper's ability to phase-compensate six comb lines at tunable channel spacings of 3, 4, and 5 GHz. Specifically, at a 3 GHz channel spacing, we showcase the generation of arbitrary waveforms in the time domain. This scalable design and control scheme holds promise in meeting future demands for high-precision spectral shaping capabilities.

Abstract:We report a tunable optical pulse expander capable of producing narrowband long pulses, starting from a femtosecond optical parametric amplifier (OPA), which is based on chirp-matched frequency mixing technique. The device delivers nJ-level pulses with bandwidth of ~0.1 nm and duration of ~45 ps within its tuning range from 1000 nm to 1090 nm. The combination of a femtosecond OPA and a pulse expander may provide synchronized and both tunable femtosecond and tens of picoseconds pulses simultaneously, which should be promising in the applications where both temporal and spectral resolutions are needed.
