Abstract:The problem of optimizing the parameters of a laser pulse compressor consisting of four identical diffraction gratings is solved analytically. The goal of optimization is to obtain maximum pulse power, completely excluding both beam clipping on gratings and the appearance of spurious diffraction orders. The analysis is carried out in a general form for an out-of-plane compressor. Two particular plane cases attractive from a practical point of view are analyzed in more detail: a standard Treacy compressor (TC) and a compressor with an angle of incidence equal to the Littrow angle (LC). It is shown that in both cases the LC is superior to the TC. Specifically, for 160-cm diffraction gratings, optimal LC design enables 109 PW for XCELS and 115 PW for SEL-100 PW, while optimal TC design enables 86 PW for both projects.

Abstract:An analytical expression for the focal intensity of a laser pulse was obtained for an asymmetric out-of-plane compressor with gratings of arbitrary surface shape. The focal intensity is most strongly affected by the linear angular chirp caused by the spatial shift of different frequencies on the second and third gratings. The chirp can be eliminated by simply rotating the fourth grating by an optimal angle, which significantly reduces the requirements for the grating quality. It is shown that the decrease in the focal intensity depends on the product of grating surface rms and pulse spectrum bandwidth. With low-quality gratings, spectrum narrowing would not reduce focal intensity; contrariwise, it may even slightly increase it.

Abstract:A novel design of a grating-based optical pulse compressor is proposed. The proposed compressor provides a large group delay dispersion while keeping the compressor linear size small. The design of the proposed compressor is based on a traditional Treacy compressor with a straightforward modification of inserting two lenses between the compressor's gratings. This simple alternation aims to substantially increase group delay dispersion of the compressor or alternatively to decrease the compressor size while maintaining its group delay dispersion. A theoretical description of the enhanced compressor has been developed in the paraxial approximation. A detailed numerical model has been built to calculate the compressor parameters more accurately. These theoretical studies have revealed that the enhanced optical compressor provides a significant increase in the group delay dispersion compared to a standard Treacy compressor.
Reducing laser beam fluence and intensity fluctuations in symmetric and asymmetric compressors

Abstract:All space-time coupling effects arising in an asymmetric optical compressor [1] consisting of two non-identical pairs of diffraction gratings are described analytically. In each pair, the gratings are identical and parallel to each other, whereas the distance between the gratings, the groove density, and the angle of incidence are different in different pairs. It is shown that the compressor asymmetry does not affect the far field fluence and on-axis focal intensity. The main distinctive feature of the asymmetric compressor is spatial noise lagging behind or overtaking the main pulse in proportion to the transverse wave vector. This results in a degraded contrast but reduces beam fluence fluctuations at the compressor output. Exact expressions are obtained for the spectrum of fluence fluctuations and fluence rms that depends only on one parameter characterizing compressor asymmetry. The efficiency of small-scale self-focusing suppression at subsequent pulse post-compression is estimated.

Abstract:One of the most serious bottleneck on achieving kilojoule-level high-energy petawatt (PW) to hundreds-petawatt (100PW) lasers with ps to fs pulse duration is the requirement of as large as meter-sized gratings in the compressor so as to avoid the laser-induced damage to the gratings. However, this kind of meter-sized grating with high quality is hard to manufacture so far. Here, we propose a new in-house beam-splitting compressor based on the property that the damage threshold of gratings depend on the pulse duration. The new scheme will simultaneously improve the stability, save expensive gratings, and simplify the size of compressor because the split beams share the first two parallel gratings. Furthermore, based on the fact that the transmitted wavefront of a glass plate can be much better and more precisely controlled than that of the diffraction wavefront of a large grating, then glass plates with designed transmitted wavefront are proposed to compensate the wavefront distortion introduced by the second, the third gratings, and other optics in-house such as the beam splitter. This simple and economical method can compensate the space-time distortion in the compressor and then improve the focal intensity, which otherwise cannot be compensated by the deformable mirror outside the compressor due to angular chirp. Together with multi-beams tiled-aperture combining scheme, the novel compressor provides a new scheme to achieve high-energy PW-100PW lasers or even exawatt lasers with relatively small gratings in the future.

Abstract:We have developed low-dispersion (1480 l/mm), resonance-free, diffraction gratings made of dielectric materials resistant to femtosecond laser damage $(SiO_{2}/HfO_{2})$. A 14 cm diameter sample was fabricated resulting in a mean diffraction efficiency of 99.1% at {\lambda} = 810 nm with 0.4% uniformity using equipment which can fabricate gratings up to 1m diagonal. The implementation of these gratings in the compression of 30 fs pulses in an out-of-plane geometry can result in compressor efficiencies of ~95%. The measured laser absorption is 500x lower than current ultrafast petawatt-class compressor gratings which will enable a substantial increase in average power handling capabilities of these laser systems.

Abstract:It is proposed a new method of compressing laser pulse by fast extending plasma gratings(FEPG), which is created by ionizing the hypersound wave generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering(SBS) in the background gas. Ionized by a short laser pulse, the phonon forms a light-velocity FEPG to fully reflect a resonant pump laser. As the reflecting surface moves with a light velocity, the reflected pulse is temporally overlapped and compressed. This regime is supported by the simulation results of a fully kinetic particle-in-cell(PIC) code Opic with a laser wavelength of 1um, displaying a pump pulse is compressed from 13ps to a few cycles(7.2fs), with an efficiency close to 80%. It is a promising method to produce critical laser powers due to several features: high efficiency without a linear stage, robustness to plasma instabilities, no seed and a wide range of pump intensity.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high throughput, large compensation range, single-prism femtosecond pulse compressor, using a single prism and two roof mirrors. The compressor has zero angular dispersion, zero spatial dispersion, zero pulse-front tilt, and unity magnification. The high efficiency is achieved by adopting two roof mirrors as the retroreflectors. We experimentally achieved -14500 fs2 group delay dispersion (GDD) with 30 cm of prism tip-roof mirror prism separation, and 90.7 With better components, the throughput can be even higher.

Abstract:The laser-induced damage observed in optics has rendered compressor gratings the most limited component of petawatt (PW) lasers, owing to the considerable challenges associated with manufacturing gratings possessing both a sufficiently high damage threshold and large dimensions. An asymmetric four-grating compressor (AFGC) based multistep pulse compressor method was proposed recently to alleviate the requirement of such gratings. The viability of AFGC is further investigated experimentally in SEL-100 PW frontend with spectral bandwidth of over 200 nm in this study. It is verified that the AFGC has the ability of beam-smoothing resulting from the introduced spatial dispersion. Meanwhile, the spatial dispersion scarcely impacts temporal contrast and focal spot of the output beam. By reducing the laser spatial intensity modulations from 2.0 to 1.3, the pulse energy capacity of the AFGC can increase more than 1.5 times through simple translation. The results mark a breakthrough toward experimentally renovating the grating compressor, and pave the way for a reliable and efficient constructions of 100 s PW lasers.

Abstract:High-energy tens (10s) to hundreds (100s) petawatt (PW) lasers are key tools for exploring frontier fundamental researches such as strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED), and the generation of positron-electron pair from vacuum. Recently, pulse compressor became the main obstacle on achieving higher peak power due to the limitation of damage threshold and size of diffraction gratings. Here, we propose a feasible multistep pulse compressor (MPC) to increase the maximum bearable input and output pulse energies through modifying their spatiotemporal properties. Typically, the new MPC including a prism pair for pre-compression, a four-grating compressor (FGC) for main compression, and a spatiotemporal focusing based self-compressor for post-compression. The prism pair can induce spatial dispersion to smooth and enlarge the laser beam, which increase the maximum input and output pulse energies. As a result, as high as 100 PW laser with single beam or more than 150 PW through combining two beams can be obtained by using MPC and current available optics. This new optical design will simplify the compressor, improve the stability, and save expensive gratings/optics simultaneously. Together with the multi-beam tiled-aperture combining method, the tiled-grating method, larger gratings, or negative chirp pulse based self-compression method, several 100s PW laser beam is expected to be obtained by using this MPC method in the future, which will further extend the ultra-intense laser physics research fields.

Abstract:We proposed a novel method, using an asymmetric four grating compressor (AFGC) to improve the spatial uniformity of laser beams, to suppress the small-scale self-focusing (SSSF) during the post-compression of ultrahigh peak power lasers. The spatial uniformity is an important factor in performing post-compression, due to the spatial intensity nonuniformity will be enhanced while going through a nonlinear process. And what's more, the strong intensity spikes induced during nonlinear process can seriously damage the subsequent optical components. Moreover, the three-dimensional numerical simulations of the post-compression are implemented based on a petawatt (PW) class laser with a standard compressor and an AFGC. The results show that the post-compression with AFGC can shorten the laser pulses from 30fs to sub-10fs and meanwhile efficiently suppress SSSF. This work provides a promising scheme for the post-compression scaling to PW and even 10PW lasers.

Abstract:To avoid damage in high-power laser systems, a chirped plasma-based grating is proposed for compressing laser pulses that have been previously stretched and amplified. This chirped grating is generated through the interaction of chirped pump laser pulses in a plasma slab. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations demonstrate that the grating exists for a duration sufficient to be utilized in the final chirped pulse amplification (CPA) stage. The generation of the grating is quite flexible, as several parameters can be adjusted, such as plasma density, chirp, length, and intensity of the pump laser. To begin, the structure of the grating is analyzed in terms of ponderomotive effects of the pump laser pulses. The primary application of the chirped plasma-based grating lies in compressing laser pulses to large amplitudes and short durations after they have been stretched and amplified beforehand. The compression factor is explored in connection with potential grating parameters. Reflectivity and effective bandwidth of chirped plasma gratings are parameters to be optimized. However, the grating spectral bandwidth can only be increased at the expense of reflectivity. The PIC results are made understandable through model calculations based on coupled mode equations.

Abstract:High-intensity lasers require suppression of prepulses and other non-ideal temporal structure to avoid target disruption before the arrival of the main pulse. To address this, we demonstrate that ionization gratings act as a controllable optical switch for high-power light with a temporal contrast improvement of at least $3\times10^5$ and a switching time less than 500 fs. We also show that a grating system can run for hours at 10 Hz without degradation. The contrast improvement from an ionization grating compares favorably to that achievable with plasma mirrors.

Abstract:In terms of Fourier optics,the amplitude expression of the output pulse from the misaligned tiled-grating compressor in the far-field is obtained.A theoretical model for the analysis of all the errors is put up,where the idea that the impact of alignment errors on the pulse is the additional phase delay and deflection is summarized.With the criterion that the encircled energy in one times diffraction limit should be kept more than 90% of the ideal case,a design is carried out for a 1 ps pulse with a size of 40 cm and the tolerances of every alignment error are obtained.

Abstract:Advancing ultrafast high-repetition-rate lasers to shortest pulse durations comprising only a few optical cycles while pushing their energy into the multi-millijoule regime opens a route towards terawatt-class peak powers at unprecedented average power. We explore this route via efficient post-compression of high-energy 1.2 ps pulses from an Ytterbium InnoSlab laser to 9.6 fs duration using gas-filled multi-pass cells (MPCs) at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. Employing dual-stage compression with a second MPC stage supporting a close-to-octave-spanning bandwidth enabled by dispersion-matched dielectric mirrors, a record compression factor of 125 is reached at 70% overall efficiency, delivering 6.7 mJ pulses with a peak power of about 0.3 TW. Moreover, we show that post-compression can improve the temporal contrast at picosecond delay by at least one order of magnitude. Our results demonstrate efficient conversion of multi-millijoule picosecond lasers to high-peak-power few-cycle sources, opening up new parameter regimes for laser plasma physics, high energy physics, biomedicine and attosecond science.
