Abstract:This paper investigates the midlatitude ionospheric disturbances over the American/Atlantic longitude sector during an intense geomagnetic storm on 23 April 2023. The study utilized a combination of ground‐based observations (Global Navigation Satellite System total electron content and ionosonde) along with measurements from multiple satellite missions (GOLD, Swarm, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, and TIMED/GUVI) to analyze storm‐time electrodynamics and neutral dynamics. We found that the storm main phase was characterized by distinct midlatitude ionospheric density gradient structures as follows: (a) In the European‐Atlantic longitude sector, a significant midlatitude bubble‐like ionospheric super‐depletion structure (BLISS) was observed after sunset. This BLISS appeared as a low‐density channel extending poleward/westward and reached ∼40° geomagnetic latitude, corresponding to an APEX height of ∼5,000 km. (b) Coincident with the BLISS, a dynamic storm‐enhanced density plume rapidly formed and decayed at local afternoon in the North American sector, with the plume intensity being doubled and halved in just a few hours. (c) The simultaneous occurrence of these strong yet opposite midlatitude gradient structures could be mainly attributed to common key drivers of prompt penetration electric fields and subauroral polarization stream electric fields. This shed light on the important role of storm‐time electrodynamic processes in shaping global ionospheric disturbances.

Thermospheric Density Perturbations Produced by Traveling Atmospheric Disturbances during August 2005 Storm

Abstract:Thermospheric mass density perturbations are commonly observed during geomagnetic storms and fundamental to upper atmosphere dynamics, but the sources of these perturbations are not well understood. Large neutral density perturbations during storms greatly affect the drag experienced by low Earth orbit. We investigated the thermospheric density perturbations at all latitudes observed along the CHAMP and GRACE satellite trajectories during the 24-25 August 2005 geomagnetic storm. Observations show that large neutral density enhancements occurred not only at high latitudes, but also globally. Large density perturbations were seen in the equatorial regions away from the high-latitude, magnetospheric energy sources. We used the high-resolution Multiscale Atmosphere Geospace Environment (MAGE) model to simulate consecutive neutral density changes observed by satellites during the storm. The MAGE simulation, which resolved mesoscale high-latitude convection electric fields and field-aligned currents, and included physics-based specification of auroral precipitation, was contrasted with a standalone ionosphere-thermosphere simulation driven by a high-latitude electrodynamics empirical model. The comparison demonstrates that first-principles representations of highly dynamic and localized Joule heating events in a fully coupled whole geospace model is critical to accurately capture both generation and propagation of traveling atmospheric disturbances (TADs) that produce neutral density perturbations globally. The MAGE simulation shows that larger density peaks in the equatorial region observed by CHAMP and GRACE are the result of TADs generated at high-latitudes in both hemispheres, and intersect at low-latitudes. This study reveals the importance of investigating thermospheric density variations at all latitudes in a fully coupled geospace model with sufficiently high resolving power.

Statistical Study and Corresponding Evolution of Plasmaspheric Plumes under Different Levels of Geomagnetic Storms

Abstract:Abstract. Using observations of Van Allen Probes, we present a statistical study of plasmaspheric plumes in the inner magnetosphere. Plasmaspheric plumes tend to occur during the recovery phase of geomagnetic storms. Furthermore, the results imply that the occurrence rate of observed plasmaspheric plume in the inner magnetosphere is larger during stronger geomagnetic activity. This statistical result is different from the observations of the Cluster satellite with much higher L-shells in most orbital period, which suggest that the plasmaspheric plume near the magnetopause tends to be observed during moderate geomagnetic activity (Lee et al., 2016). In the following, the dynamic evolutions of plasmaspheric plumes during a moderate geomagnetic storm in February 2013 and a strong geomagnetic storm in May 2013 are simulated through group test particle simulation. It is obvious that the plasmaspheric particles drift out on open convection paths due to sunward convection during both geomagnetic storms. It seems that the outer plasmaspheric particles exhaust sooner and the plasmasphere shrinks faster during strong geomagnetic storms. As a result, the longitudinal width of the plume is narrower and the plume is limited to lower L-shells during the recovery phase of strong geomagnetic storm. The simulated evolution may provide a possible interpretation for the occurrence rates: Van Allen Probes tend to observe plumes during stronger geomagnetic storms, and the Cluster satellite with higher L-shells tends to observe plumes during moderate geomagnetic storms.

Abstract:The plume is a plasma region in the magnetosphere that is detached from the main plasmasphere. It significantly contributes to the dynamic processes in both the inner and outer magnetosphere. In this paper, using Van Allen Probe A (VAP-A), the correlation between plume width and the level of geomagnetic storm intensity is studied. First, through the statistical analysis of all potential plume events, we find that there is almost no correlation between plume width and the level of geomagnetic storm intensity. However, for the plumes in the recovery phase after improved sifting, it seems that there is a negative correlation between the plume width and the absolute value of minimum Dst during a storm. Utilizing test particle simulations, we study the dynamic evolution patterns of plumes during two geomagnetic storms. The simulated structures of the two plasmaspheric plumes are roughly consistent with the structures observed by the Van Allen Probe A. This result suggests that the plasmaspheric particles escape quickly during intense geomagnetic storms, causing the width of the plume to be relatively narrow during the recovery phase of intense geomagnetic storms. These results are helpful for understanding the dynamic evolution of the plasmasphere and plume during geomagnetic storms.

Analyzing the Hemispheric Asymmetry in the Thermospheric Density Response to Geomagnetic Storms

Abstract:[1] The thermospheric densities derived by CHAMP/STAR accelerometer within the time period from 01 May 2001 to 31 December 2007 are utilized to investigate the hemispheric asymmetry in response to strong storm driving conditions. The geomagnetic storms of 03–07 April 2004 are first studied since the storms occurred close to the vernal equinox, allowing the seasonal asymmetry to be eliminated to the greatest extent. The averaged density enhancements in the southern polar region were much larger than that in the northern polar region. The comparisons of density versus Dst and Apindex indicate a strong linear dependence with the slopes of the fitted lines in the southern hemisphere being 50% greater than that in the northern hemisphere. This effect can possibly be attributed to the non-symmetric geomagnetic field. 102 storm events are used to conduct a statistical analysis. For each storm, a linear fit is made between the averaged mass density and theDst and Ap indices independently in each hemisphere. The seasonal variation of the intercepts and the slopes of the fitted lines are further explored. The baseline is strongly dependent on season, with the hemisphere receiving the larger amount of sunlight having larger density. The slopes showed considerable hemispheric differences around the vernal equinox yet no statistical differences around other seasons. It is speculated that competing mechanisms cancel each other during the solstices, while during the equinoxes, the lower magnetic field in the southern hemisphere may allow stronger ion flows, thereby causing more Joule heating. It is uncertain why the vernal equinox would be favored in this explanation though.
Large-Scale Ionospheric Disturbances During the 17 March 2015 Storm: A Model-Data Comparative Study

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed model-data comparative study of the 17 March 2015 geomagnetic storm using the high-resolution version of the thermosphere-ionosphere-electrodynamic general circulation model and the total electron content observations from a dense global navigation satellite system network. Driven by time-dependent high-latitude ionospheric convection and auroral precipitation inputs, together with an empirically defined subauroral plasma stream (SAPS) field, our simulation reproduce many observed storm-related ionospheric phenomena, including large-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances over Europe, the effects of prompt penetration electric field over South and Central America, and the formation of a storm-enhanced density (SED) plume across the continental United States. Our simulation results reaffirm a number of important characteristics concerning the SED plume: (1) enhanced background ionospheric density is a necessary but not sufficient condition, and enhanced ion drift is required to form the SED plume; (2) the SAPS flow channel does not directly transport the plasma from midnight to postnoon via dusk to form the SED plume, instead, the SED plume is formed at the equatorward and westward edge of the SAPS channel; and (3) the SED plume appears to subcorotate with respect to the Earth. Plain Language Summary Storm-induced ionospheric density variations are a major concern of near-Earth space environment as they could drastically disrupt satellite navigation and telecommunication systems. Although ionospheric disturbances such as traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) and storm-enhanced density (SED) are commonly observed during geomagnetic storms, accurate specification of these phenomena remains a great challenge for geospace models. This paper presents a detailed model-data comparative study of the well-known March 2015 St. Patrick's Day storm. The simulated TIDs and SED structures from the thermosphere-ionosphere-electrodynamic general circulation model (TIEGCM) are compared with the total electron content observations for a dense global navigation satellite system (GNSS) network over Europe, South and Central America, as well as North America. While the model reproduces many observed storm-related ionospheric features, quantitative differences between the simulation results and the GNSS data indicate that further improvements to the TIEGCM (such as a more realistic, self-consistent electrodynamic coupling of the ionosphere and magnetosphere) are required in order to meet the challenges of space weather specification and eventually forecast. This study not only serves a meaningful validation of our numerical model but also sheds some new lights on an apparent paradox concerning the formation of the SED plume. Wind and temperature effects on thermosphere mass density response to the November 2004 geomagnetic storm

Abstract:A unique conjunction of the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) and the Challenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) satellites provided simultaneous columnar neutral composition, Sigma O/N-2, and thermosphere density observations, enabling a novel study of thermospheric response to the 7-9 November 2004 geomagnetic storm. Both Sigma O/N-2 and mass density showed profound response to this severe geomagnetic storm, but their latitudinal and temporal structures differed markedly. In particular, high-latitude depletion and low-latitude enhancement in Sigma O/N-2 were observed throughout the storm period, especially during the main phase. In contrast, neutral density at 400 km altitude increased from pole to pole shortly after the storm, with strongest enhancement of order 200%-400% during the main phase. Comparisons of observed thermosphere response with simulations from the National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) were carried out to interpret the observed contrasting characteristics of thermosphere composition and mass density in response to this geomagnetic storm. The TIEGCM simulations show that the contrasting characteristics occur not only in Sigma O/N-2 and mass density at a constant altitude at 400 km, but also in O/N-2 and mass density on a constant-pressure surface. At an altitude of 400 km (CHAMP altitude), storm-time mass densities significantly increase due to an increase in scale height throughout the vertical column between the heat source and satellite altitude. For a given increase in scale height, the more scale height increments separating the heat source from the satellite altitude, the greater is the mass density response. It is shown that scale height change is caused partly by storm-time neutral temperature enhancements due to heating and partly by changes in mean molecular weight due to winds. These findings indicate that wind effects can cause significant deviations from a mass density pattern resulting solely from neutral temperature changes by altering the mean molecular weight, particularly at high latitudes.
Responses of Thermospheric Mass Densities to the October 2016 and September 2017 Geomagnetic Storms Revealed From Multiple Satellite Observations

Abstract:In this study, the thermospheric mass densities based on satellite Precise Orbit Determination (POD) data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), Swarm-A, and Swarm-B were used to explore the thermospheric variations in response to the October 2016 and September 2017 geomagnetic storms which occurred around the equinox. Two of the three satellites were nearly coplanar and the third one flew at a separated orbital plane. Based on the nearly coplanar observations of GRACE and Swarm, the thermospheric mass densities showed different hemispheric asymmetries depending on altitudes. The observations from different local times (LTs) revealed that the density enhancements were similar between the two hemispheres when the LTs were 8-10/20-22 LTs. However, the enhancements were stronger in the southern hemisphere than those in the northern hemisphere at around 16 LT. Moreover, the density enhancements at low latitudes underwent significant day-night variation as the daytime densities at low latitudes increased more rapidly and strongly than the nightside. Our results demonstrated that the satellite POD data could be used to retrieve high-cadence thermospheric density to study the variations of the upper atmosphere.

Abstract:The atmospheric density of the thermosphere is a fundamental parameter for spacecraft launch and orbit control. Under magnetic storm conditions, the thermospheric atmospheric density experiences significant fluctuations, which have a negative impact on spacecraft control. Exploring thermospheric density during geomagnetic storms can help to mitigate the effects of such events. Research on the inversion of accelerometer measurements for different satellites and the variations of atmospheric density under extreme conditions is still in its infancy. In this paper, the distribution of atmospheric density during three geomagnetic storms is investigated from the inversion results of the Swarm-C accelerometer. Three major geomagnetic storms and their recovery phases are selected as case studies. The thermospheric density obtained by Swarm-C is separated into day and night regions. The empirical orthogonal function analysis method is used to study the spatiotemporal distribution of thermospheric density during geomagnetic storms. The results indicate that storms have a more significant impact on nighttime thermospheric density. The impact of magnetic storms on the temporal distribution of thermospheric density is considerable. The first-order empirical orthogonal function (EOF) time coefficient value on the day after the storm is the largest, reaching 2–3 times that before the magnetic storm. The impact of magnetic storms on atmospheric density is mainly reflected in the time distribution. The spatial distribution of atmospheric density is less affected by magnetic storms and is relatively stable in the short term. The impact of magnetic storms on the spatial distribution of nighttime thermospheric density is more significant than that of daytime regions, and the response of daytime regions to magnetic storms is slower.
An Empirical Relation to Correct Storm-Time Thermospheric Mass Density Modeled by NRLMSISE-00 with CHAMP Satellite Air Drag Data

Abstract:With the help of STAR (Spatial Triaxial Accelerometer for Research) accelerometer measurements on board CHAMP (Challenging Minisatellite Payload), the global distributions of total mass density changes at about 400km height during major magnetic storms are studied, aiming to improve the capability of current thermospheric model for predicting the storm-time mass density distribution. The density calculated by the NRLMSISE-00 model without using the geomagnetic active index as input is taken as a reference on top of which the storm-time changes are added. In total 19 storm events during 2001–2004 are used to perform a comprehensive statistical analysis. A relative calibration of drag coefficient along with accelerometer calibration parameters is made by fitting the CHAMP observed initial mass densities in with the NRLMSISE-00 model on quiet days before each storm. The dependences of the storm-time changes in mass density on both the total global Joule heating power, ∑Qj and the high-resolution ring current index, Sym-H, are investigated. The lag times of mass density changes with respect to the Joule heating and Sym-H variation are obtained as a function of latitude and sunlight. By using a multiple linear regression analysis with proper time shift, an empirical relation connecting storm-time changes in mass density for 400km height with the two parameters, ∑Qj and Sym-H, has been worked out for different latitude and sunlight conditions (day-side or night-side). Adding a correction calculated from the empirical relation to the NRLMSISE-00 model reference leads to a better prediction of storm-time thermospheric mass density distribution.
The Asymmetric Eddy Background Flow Interaction in the North Pacific Storm Track

Abstract:Using a recently developed methodology, namely, the multiscale window transform (MWT), and the MWT-based theory of canonical transfer and localized multiscale energetics analysis, we investigate in an eddy-following way the nonlinear eddy-background flow interaction in the North Pacific storm track, based on the ERA40 reanalysis data from ECWMF. It is found that more than 50% of the storms occur on the northern flank of the jet stream, about 40% are around the jet center, and very few (less than 5%) happen on the southern flank. For storms near or to the north of the jet center, their interaction with the background flow is asymmetric in latitude. In higher latitudes, strong downscale canonical available potential energy transfer happens, especially in the middle troposphere, which reduces the background baroclinicity and decelerates the jet; in lower latitudes, upscale canonical kinetic energy transfer intensifies at the jet center, accelerating the jet and enhancing the middle-level baroclinicity. The resultant effect is that the jet strengthens but narrows, leading to an anomalous dipolar pattern in the fields of background wind and baroclinicity. For the storms on the southern side of the jet, the baroclinic canonical transfer is rather weak. On average, the local interaction begins from about 3 days before a storm arrives at the site of observation, achieves its maximum as the storm arrives, and then weakens.
Climatology of severe local storm environments and synoptic-scale features over North America in ERA5 reanalysis and CAM6 simulation

Abstract:Severe local storm (SLS) activity is known to occur within specific thermodynamic and kinematic environments. These environments are commonly associated with key synoptic-scale features--including southerly Great Plains low-level jets, drylines, elevated mixed layers, and extratropical cyclones--that link the large-scale climate to SLS environments. This work analyzes spatiotemporal distributions of both the environmental parameters and synoptic-scale features in ERA5 reanalysis and in Community Atmosphere Model version 6 (CAM6) during 1980--2014 over North America. Compared to radiosondes, ERA5 successfully reproduces SLS environments, with strong spatiotemporal correlations and low biases, especially over the Great Plains. Both ERA5 and CAM6 reproduce the climatology of SLS environments over the central United States as well as its strong seasonal and diurnal cycles. ERA5 and CAM6 also reproduce the climatological occurrence of the synoptic-scale features, with the distribution pattern similar to that of SLS environments. Compared to ERA5, CAM6 exhibits a high bias in Convective Available Potential Energy over the eastern United States primarily due to a high bias in surface moisture, and to a lesser extent, storm-relative helicity due to enhanced low-level winds. Composite analysis indicates consistent synoptic anomaly patterns favorable for significant SLS environments over much of the eastern half of the United States in both ERA5 and CAM6, though the pattern differs for the southeastern United States. Overall, results indicate that both ERA5 and CAM6 are capable of reproducing SLS environments as well as the synoptic-scale features and transient events that generate them.

Abstract:A multi-variable investigation of thunderstorm environments in two distinct geographic regions is conducted to assess the aerosol and thermodynamic environments surrounding thunderstorm initiation. 12-years of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flash data are used to reconstruct thunderstorms occurring in a 225 km radius centered on the Washington, D·C. and Kansas City Metropolitan Regions. A total of 196,836 and 310,209 thunderstorms were identified for Washington, D.C. and Kansas City, MO, respectively. Hourly meteorological and aerosol data were then merged with the thunderstorm event database. Evidence suggests, warm season thunderstorm environments in benign synoptic conditions are considerably different in thermodynamics, aerosol properties, and aerosol concentrations within the Washington, D.C. and Kansas City regions. However, thunderstorm intensity, as measured by flash counts, appears regulated by similar thermodynamic-aerosol relationships despite the differences in their ambient environments. When examining thunderstorm initiation environments, there exists statistically significant, positive relationships between convective available potential energy (CAPE) and flash counts. Aerosol concentration also appears to be a more important quantity than particle size for lightning augmentation.

Abstract:This experimental study aims to compare the role of plume dynamics and canopy-induced instabilities on the transport of inertial particles, with application to firebrand transport in spotfire spread. In an idealized "wind-driven" model system, we consider the impact of plume buoyancy, plume momentum, and canopy turbulence on the downstream transport of particles in the wake of a canopy, and in particular the mean and standard deviation of the distribution of landing sites. Experiments were conducted in a recirculating flume with model vegetation, a heated plume/jet source, and three-dimensional printed spherical plastic particles. In a first set of experiments, particles were released with a fixed starting elevation above the plumes' upper boundaries, such that the particles were not lofted by the plume. In these cases, observations suggest that plumes have a role in extending particles' streamwise transport by delaying their downward transport. The plumes also have a strong role in increasing absolute dispersion of the particles, although less so when dispersion is normalized by distance traveled. While canopy turbulence alone significantly increases particle dispersion, in the presence of the plume its impact is more limited. Canopy turbulence was also found to cause shorter mean landing positions. In a second set of experiments, particles were released at the plume source/outlet such that their initial vertical momentum was provided by the plume's momentum and buoyancy. In these cases, the impact of canopy turbulence on particle transport is observed more distinctly. The canopy coherent structures introduce a mechanical instability to the plume, which manifests as vertical oscillatory motions that lead to variability in the particles' initial conditions and, therefore, trajectories. Turbulence statistics in a negatively buoyant multiphase plume

Abstract:We investigate the turbulence statistics in a {multiphase plume made of heavy particles (particle Reynolds number at terminal velocity is 450)}. Using refractive-index-matched stereoscopic particle image velocimetry, we measure the locations of particles {whose buoyancy drives the formation of a multiphase plume,} {together with the local velocity of the induced flow in the ambient salt-water}. {Measurements in the plume centerplane exhibit self-similarity in mean flow characteristics consistent with classic integral plume theories.} The turbulence characteristics resemble those measured in a bubble plume, {including strong anisotropy in the normal Reynolds stresses. However, we observe structural differences between the two multiphase plumes. First, the skewness of the probability density function (PDF) of the axial velocity fluctuations is not that which would be predicted by simply reversing the direction of a bubble plume. Second, in contrast to a bubble plume, the particle plume has a non-negligible fluid-shear production term in the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budget. Third, the radial decay of all measured terms in the TKE budget is slower than those in a bubble plume.} Despite these dissimilarities, a bigger picture emerges that applies to both flows. The TKE production by particles (or bubbles) roughly balances the viscous dissipation, except near the plume centerline. The one-dimensional power-spectra of the velocity fluctuations show a -3 power-law that puts both the particle and bubble plume in a category different from single-phase shear-flow turbulence.
