Abstract:The optimization of Stokes polarimeter to determine the full linearly Stokes parameters in the presence of additive Gaussian noise and signal-dependent Poisson shot noise is addressed. The measurement matrix to minimize the total measurement variance on the full linearly Stokes parameters is optimized. Compared with the previous measurement matrix, the optimal measurement matrix proposed in this paper can effectively improve the measurement precision of the full linearly Stokes parameters statistically. In addition, a practical configuration of Stokes polarimeter is optimized by a cost function to generate the optimal measurement matrix. For the Stokes polarimeter composed by a variable retarder and fixed polarizer, the optimal measurement matrix can be easily generated by a 179.28° retardation with a pair of azimuths ±78.84° and a 179.64° retardation with a pair of azimuths ±33.84°.

Abstract:The polarimeter is an important tool to measure polarization properties in the living human eye, to discriminate between benign and malignant moles, to measure the solar magnetic field, and so on. In this paper, we propose a new compact full-Stokes vector polarimeter to measure the full-Stokes vector simultaneously, which employs micro-retarder arrays to replace the traditional movable or adjustable wave plate. Because of its compact structure, this polarimeter we propose can be used in different systems or for different observation aims, and it also can be used in a large wavelength range. We have validated the feasibility of the proposed method by analytic and numeric methods, and the results show that we can get the full-Stokes parameters simultaneously from one single image frame caught by this polarimeter.

Abstract:Accurate calibration of polarization dependent optical elements is often necessary in optical experiments. A versatile polarimeter device to measure the polarization state of light is a valuable tool in these experiments. Here we report a rotating waveplate-based polarimeter capable of complete Stokes vector analysis of collimated light. Calibration of the device allows accurate measurements over a range of wavelengths, with a bandwidth of >30 nm in this implementation. A photo-interrupter trigger system supplies the phase information necessary for full determination of the Stokes vector. An Arduino microcontroller performs rapid analysis and displays the results on a liquid crystal display. The polarimeter is compact and can be placed anywhere on an optical table on a single standard post. The components to construct the device are only a fraction of the cost of commercially available devices while the accuracy and precision of the measurements are of the same order of magnitude.

Abstract:This lab note introduces the "Stokes Camera," a simple and novel experimental arrangement for real-time measurement of spatial amplitude and polarisation and thus spatially resolved Stokes parameters. It uses a polarisation sensitive camera and a fixed quarter-wave plate, providing a one-shot, digital solution for polarisation measurement that is only limited by the frame rate of the camera and the computation speed of the provided code. The note also provides background information on relevant polarisation theory and vector vortex beams, which are used as a demonstration of the device.

Full-Stokes Retrieving and Configuration Optimization in a Time-Integration Imaging Polarimeter

Abstract:A time-integration imaging polarimeter with continuous rotating retarder is presented, and its full-Stokes retrieving and configuration optimization are also demonstrated. The mathematical expression between the full-Stokes vector and the time-integration light intensities is derived. As a result, the state of polarization of incident light can be retrieved by only one matrix calculation. However, the modulation matrix deviates from the initial well-conditioned status due to time integration. Thus, we re-optimize the nominal angles for the special retardance of 132° and 90° with an exposure angle of 30°, which results in a reduction of 31.8% and 16.8% of condition numbers comparing to the original configuration, respectively. We also give global optimization results under different exposure angles and retardance of retarder; as a result, the 137.7° of retardance achieves a minimal condition number of 2.0, which indicates a well-conditioned polarimeter configuration. Besides, the frame-by-frame algorithm ensures the dynamic performance of the presented polarimeter. For a general brushless DC motor with a rotating speed of over 2000 rounds per minute, the speed of polarization imaging will achieve up to 270 frames per second. High precision and excellent dynamic performance, together with features of compactness, simplicity, and low cost, may give this traditional imaging polarimeter new life and attractive prospects.

Abstract:The modulation and detection of polarized light has important practical value in the field of parameters measurement using optical methods.The measurement of linear polarization parameter is the primary way of current polarization remote sensing,not the measurement of full-Stokes-vector.To the purpose of measurement and display of all-state-polarization images,a full polarization image acquisition,storage,computing and displaying system which could be used for remote sensing measurement should be constructed.The core of the whole equipment was a structure of double imaging CCDs containing a liquid crystal modulator.Through the control of the liquid crystal modulator,the phase of the incident ray could be modulated.The modulated light Was divided by the dispersion prism into two equal intensity beam (o-ray and e-ray),which were captured by the two CCDs synchronously in real time.Finally,the full Stokes vector parameters were calculated and images were output by the digital signal processor (DSP).Experimental results show that the all-state polarization images contain more image information.They will play a huge role in target identification and other applications.

Abstract:The theoretical operation and experimental demonstration of a Fourier-transform Stokes imaging spectropolarimeter are presented. It is composed of two birefringent crystal retarders with equal thickness (the frontal retarder is rotatable) and a Fourier-transform spectrometer based on Savart polariscope. The polarized light enters the spectrometer to create three sets of interferograms, where the spectral Stokes parameters can be calculated and acquired. Compared with previous instruments, the significant advantages of the described sensor are no spatial aliasing in the polarized spectra and it can be used in wider spectral coverage with low cost, ultra-compact size and a simpler common-path configuration.

Abstract:An easily constructed and operated polarimeter precisely determines the relative Stokes parameters that characterize the polarization of laser light. The polarimeter is calibrated in situ without removing or realigning its optical elements, and it is largely immune to fluctuations in the laser beam intensity. The polarimeter's usefulness is illustrated by measuring thermally-induced birefringence in the indium-tin-oxide coated glass field plates used to produce a static electric field in the ACME collaboration's measurement of the electron electric dipole moment.

Abstract:A new polarimeter for the simultaneous measurement of all Stokes parameters in a single shot is presented. It consists of only a gradient index (GRIN) lens, a polarizer, an imaging lens, and a CCD, without mechanical movements, electrical signal modulation, or the division of amplitude components. This design takes advantage of the continuous spatial distributions of birefringence value and the fast axis direction of a GRIN lens and derives the state of polarization (SOP) of the incident beam from the characteristic patterns on the CCD images. Tests show that this polarimeter is very accurate even with low-resolution images. It is versatile and adapts to light sources of different wavelengths. It is also very stable, robust, low cost, and simple to use.

Abstract:Polarization is a fundamental property of light that contains valuable information about the targets. Polarimeters, which enable direct measurement of the state of polarization (SOP), are desired in many areas of science and technology. The polarimeters could be divided into static and dynamic ones, among which the dynamic ones have an advantage of eliminating the need of sophisticated error reduction algorithms. Here, we demonstrate a dynamic polarimeter based on metasurface. The unit cell of metasurface is designed both chiral and anisotropic in geometry, which can response differently for incident light with different polarizations. By mounting the metasurface on a rotating stage and recording the transmitted intensity at different rotation angles, the SOPs of the incident light were finally reconstructed based on a SOP retrieval algorithm developed here.

Abstract:A common polarization measurement system consists of a quarter-wave plate and a linear polarizer, and the rotation of the wave plate can provide different phase retardance. However, the rotating phase retarder will introduce some unwanted frequency components in the light intensity signal, which may affect the correct information extraction for dynamic observation of the optical process. In this work, we analyzed the effective working frequency band of the polarization measurement system and pointed out how to judge the reliability of dynamic periodic polarization signals. We present the parameter selection strategy of the cutoff frequency of the filter, sampling frequency and rotation angular velocity for a specific dynamic polarization change of scattered light. Finally, we apply our work in the polarization monitoring of tissue optical clearing and show the improvement of the measurement stability and accuracy.

Abstract:A four-quadrant detector (4QD) consists of four well-balanced detectors. We report on a Stokes polarimeter with optimal linear polarization measurements based on a 4QD. We turned the four intensity-detection channels into four polarization-analyzing channels by placing four polarizers and one quarter-wave plate in front of the individual detectors. An optimization method for the four polarization-analyzing channels is proposed to improve measurement accuracy. Considering applications in favor of linear polarization measurements instead of global optimization for all the possible states of polarization (SOP), we optimize the polarimeter first for the linear polarization components and then for the circular polarization component. The polarimeter is capable of simultaneous measurements of fast varying SOP with improved performance for the linear polarizations.

Abstract:A Stokes channeled interference imaging spectropolarimeter with full-resolution spectra and aliasing reduction is presented. The sensor uses a Wollaston prism, a Savart polariscope, and a linear analyzer as a birefringent interferometer, along with two high-order retarders to incorporate channeled polarimetry employing a tempo-spatially mixed modulated mode with no internal moving parts and offering a robust system. The performance of the system is verified through laboratory tests. Compared with the previous sensors, the most significant advantage of the described instrument is that the reconstructed spectra retain the resolution of the interferometer, and the errors in the reconstructed spectral resolved polarization state caused by aliasing between the interference channels are suppressed effectively. Additionally, the advantages of the interferometer are maintained, such as compact structure and high optical throughput.

Abstract:The polarization information of light can be used to improve the possibility of target recognition. Stokes parameters can express all kinds of polarization states compared with the Jones matrix. Many ways have been developed to measure light polarization state by Stokes parameters. But traditional systems meet challenges in stability and velocity. A new method was proposed in this paper to apply two cascaded LiNbO3 crystals as a phase retarder in replacing the wave plate. It has the merits of static without moving elements and rapid measurement. The transversal electro-optic effect is exploited to avoid the high voltage loaded on a LiNbO3 crystal. Four different voltages were loaded on eight LiNbO3 crystals respectively to obtain four values of related phase difference and four intensity values recorded on the detector one time, from which the Stokes parameters of the detected light can be obtained to express the light polarization state. This system has the possibility to measure high speed changing polarized light even less than microseconds. The experiments were performed to prove the feasibility of this proposed method. The calculated polarization state is close to the expected Stokes parameters for the linearly and circularly polarized light. It is suitable for the fields demanding stable and real-time monitoring the changing of polarization state. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A simple, self-calibrating, rotating-waveplate polarimeter is largely insensitive to light intensity fluctuations and is shown to be useful for determining the Stokes parameters of light. This study shows how to minimize the in situ self-calibration time, the measurement time and the measurement uncertainty. The suggested methods are applied to measurements of spatial variations in the linear and circular polarizations of laser light passing through glass plates with a laser intensity dependent birefringence. These are crucial measurements for the ACME electron electric dipole measurements, requiring accuracies in circular and linear polarization fraction of about 0.1% and 0.4%, with laser intensities up to 100 $\text{mW/mm}^2$ incident into the polarimeter.

Rapid Stokes Polarimetry for Studying the Process of Optical Tissue Clearing

Abstract:Polarization imaging has shown great potentials in biomedical studies, due to its sensitivity to microstructural changes and anisotropic optical effects in biological tissues and contrast between lesion site and normal tissue. However, for total polarization measurement, no matter Muller matrix or Stokes vectors, their imaging processes are both time-consuming and not suitable for dynamic physiological monitoring. In this study, we proposed a method to obtain rapid continuous Stokes images and present it application in tissue characterization with clearing. We use single rotating retarder configuration to attain 2D Stokes vector images, the tissue clearing process and the Stokes measurement are carried synchronously on our vertical experimental device. According to the representation of the Stokes vectors on the Poincare sphere, we extract the linear-retardance and circular-depolarization parameters to characterize the microstructures of biological samples, and valid them by two tissue experiments. We show the dynamic Stokes imaging sequences of two types of in vitro tissue samples with clearing on the resolution board, and evaluate the clearing induced temporal variations quantitatively based on the polarization parameters. These experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of our rapid Stokes imaging based on Stokes measurement, implying a potential application in the tissue administration and physiological process.
