Abstract:Consider a generalized Grassmannian G/P⊂P embedded in a projective space by a complete linear system of a positive generator of the Picard group. For a very general hypersurface H⊂P , we study subvarieties of G/P∩H that are not of general type (or not of positive geometric genus). When the degree of the hypersurface is not small, we show that, under a certain condition on the parabolic subgroup P , such subvarieties are union of lines. Our result is a generalization of Clemens-Ran's result concerning G/P=Pn .

General hyperplane sections of log canonical threefolds in positive characteristic

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that if a $3$-dimensional quasi-projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>3$ has only log canonical singularities, then so does a general hyperplane section $H$ of $X$. We also show that the same is true for klt singularities, which is a slight extension of \cite{ST20}. In the course of the proof, we provide a sufficient condition for log canonical (resp.~klt) surface singularities to be geometrically log canonical (resp.~geometrically klt) over a field.

Projective Duality, Unexpected Hypersurfaces and Logarithmic Derivations of Hyperplane Arrangements

Abstract:Several papers have been written studying unexpected hypersurfaces. We say a finite set of points Z admits unexpected hypersurfaces if a general union of fat linear subspaces imposes less that the expected number of conditions on the ideal of Z. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a very unexpected hypersurface. This is a stronger condition which takes into account an explanation for some hypersurfaces previously considered unexpected. We then develop a duality theory to relate the study of very unexpected hypersurfaces to the derivations of dual hyperplane arrangements. This allows us to generalize results in the plane of Cook, Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel Faenzi, and Vallés to higher dimensions. In particular, we give a criterion to determine if a set Z admits very unexpected hypersurfaces in the case Z is invariant under the action of an irreducible reflection group on the ambient projective space. Our approach has new applications even in the projective plane where we are able to place strong conditions on sets of points Z which admit certain types of unexpected curves. We close relating Terao's Freeness Conjecture for line arrangements to a conjecture due to G. Dirac on configurations of points in the real plane.

Abstract:Abstract We show that the maximum likelihood degree of a smooth very affine variety is equal to the signed topological Euler characteristic. This generalizes Orlik and Terao’s solution to Varchenko’s conjecture on complements of hyperplane arrangements to smooth very affine varieties. For very affine varieties satisfying a genericity condition at infinity, the result is further strengthened to relate the variety of critical points to the Chern–Schwartz–MacPherson class. The strengthened version recovers the geometric deletion–restriction formula of Denham et al. for arrangement complements, and generalizes Kouchnirenko’s theorem on the Newton polytope for nondegenerate hypersurfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that a smooth projective globally $F$-split variety with numerically flat tangent bundle is an étale quotient of an ordinary abelian variety. We also show its logarithmic analog, which contains a characterization of toric varieties. We further prove that, without assumption of global $F$-splitting, a smooth projective separably rationally connected variety of arbitrary characteristic with numerically flat log cotangent bundle is a toric variety.

Abstract:We introduce logarithmic Enriques varieties as a singular analogue of Enriques manifolds, generalizing the notion of log-Enriques surfaces introduced by Zhang. We focus then on the properties of the subfamily of log-Enriques varieties that admit a quasi-étale cover by a singular symplectic variety and we give many examples.

Abstract:For a symplectic vector space $V$, a projective subvariety $Z \subset {\bf P} V$ is a Legendrian variety if its affine cone $\widehat{Z} \subset V$ is Lagrangian. In addition to the classical examples of subadjoint varieties associated to simple Lie algebras, many examples of nonsingular Legendrian varieties have been discovered which have positive-dimensional automorphism groups. We give a characterization of subadjoint varieties among such Legendrian varieties in terms of the isotropy representation. Our proof uses some special features of the projective third fundamental forms of Legendrian varieties and their relation to the lines on the Legendrian varieties.

Abstract:We construct a linear system on a general curve in a totally geodesic subvariety of the moduli space of curves. As a consequence, we obtain rank bounds for totally geodesic subvarieties of dimension at least two. Furthermore, we classify totally geodesic subvarieties of dimension at least two in strata with at most two zeros.

Abstract:Suppose that X X is a projective manifold whose tangent bundle T X T_X contains a locally free strictly nef subsheaf. We prove that X X is isomorphic to either a projective space or a projective bundle over a hyperbolic manifold of general type. Moreover, if the fundamental group π 1 ( X ) \pi _1(X) is virtually solvable, then X X is isomorphic to a projective space.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the moduli space of rank three parabolic logarithmic connections on the projective line with three poles for any local exponents. In particular, we show that the family of moduli spaces of rank three parabolic $\phi$-connections on the projective line with three poles is isomorphic to the family of $A^{(1)*}_2$-surfaces in Sakai's classification of Painlevé equations. Through this description, we investigate the relation between the apparent singularities and underlying parabolic bundles.

Abstract:We prove the following results: (1) for any nonsingular projective $3$-folds $X$ of general type with $\chi(\mathcal{O}_X)\neq 2,3$, the canonical volume $\text{Vol}(X)$ has the optimal lower bound $\frac{1}{420}$; (2) for nonsingular projective $3$-folds (resp. $4$-folds) $X$ of general type with $h^{2, 0}(X)\geq 108\cdot 42^3+4$ (resp. with sufficiently large $h^{2, 0}(X)$), the $3$-canonical map (resp. $5$-canonical map) is stably birational; (3) for any nonsingular projective $n$-fold $X$ of general type with $q(X)>n\geq 4$, the canonical stability index $r_s(X)$ is upper bounded by the $(n-1)$-th canonical stability index $r_{n-1}$.
Moduli of codimension two linear sections of subadjoint varieties

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of type $F_{4}$, $E_{6}$, $E_{7}$ or $E_{8}$, and let $\mathfrak{g}$ be its Lie algebra. The adjoint variety $X_{ad} \subseteq \mathbb{P} \mathfrak{g}$ is defined as the unique closed orbit of the adjoint action of $G$ on $\mathbb{P}\mathfrak{g}$. $X_{ad}$ is a Fano contact manifold covered by lines in $\mathbb{P} \mathfrak{g}$. The subadjoint variety $S \subseteq \mathbb{P} W$ is denoted by the variety of lines on $X_{ad}$ through a fixed point $x$, where $W \subseteq T_{x}X$ is taken as the contact hyperplane. It follows from a result in representation theory of Vinberg that the GIT quotient space of codimension two linear sections of $S$ is isomorphic to the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1,3,4,6)$. In this note, we investigate the problem of finding a geometric interpretation of the above isomorphism. As a main result, for each $\mathfrak{g}$ of the above type, we construct a natural open embedding of the GIT quotient space of nonsingular codimension two linear sections of $S$ into $\mathbb{P}(1,3,4,6)$ whose complement is a fixed hypersurface of degree 12. The key ingredient of our construction is to apply a correspondence of Bahargava and Ho which relates the above moduli problem to a moduli problem on curves of genus one.

A strong counterexample to the log canonical Beauville--Bogomolov decomposition

Abstract:For every $d \geq 4$, we construct a $d$-dimensional, log canonical, $K$-trivial variety with the property that two general fibers of its Albanese morphism are not birational. This provides a strong counterexample to the Beauville--Bogomolov decomposition in the log canonical setting. This construction can also be adapted to construct a smooth quasi-projective variety of logarithmic Kodaira dimension 0 whose quasi-Albanese morphism has maximal variation. On the positive side, we show that the Albanese morphism for log canonical pairs with nef anti-canonical class is a locally stable family of pairs.

Abstract:We study singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space. We define the rank of an algebraic Levi-flat hypersurface and study the connections between rank, degree, and the type and size of the singularity. In particular, we study degenerate singularities of algebraic Levi-flat hypersurfaces. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Levi-flat hypersurface to be a pullback of a real-analytic curve in $\mathbb{C}$ via a meromorphic function. Among other examples, we construct a nonalgebraic semianalytic Levi-flat hypersurface with compact leaves that is a perturbation of an algebraic Levi-flat variety.

Abstract:We generalize a fundamental theorem in higher dimensional value distribution theory about entire curves in subvarieties $X$ of semi-abelian varieties to the situation of the sequences of holomorphic maps from the unit disc into $X$. This generalization implies, among other things, that subvarieties of log general type in semi-abelian varieties are pseudo-Kobayashi hyperbolic. As another application, we improve a classical theorem due to Cartan in 1920's about the system of nowhere vanishing holomorphic functions on the unit disc satisfying Borel's identity.
