Abstract:We investigate the following inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation with focusing energy critical nonlinearity and a defocusing perturbation in the radial regime, $$ i \partial_t u +\Delta u =|x|^{-a} |u|^{p-2} u - |x|^{-b} |u|^{4-2b}u \quad \mbox{in} \quad \mathbb{R}_t \times \mathbb{R}_x^3, $$ where $0<a$, $b<2$ and ${ 2+\frac{4-2a}{3}< p\leq 6-2a}$. First, we prove the existence/nonexistence and quantitative properties of ground states. Subsequently, we establish the scattering versus blow-up below the ground-state energy threshold. Our methodology hinges on Tao's scattering criterion and Dodson-Murphy's Virial/Morawetz inequalities. An intriguing aspect of our study is the absence of scaling invariance within the equation, attributed to the interplay of the competing inhomogeneous nonlinearities. Moreover, the presence of singular weights serves as a barrier to translation invariance in the spatial variable, adding more complexity to the analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the inaugural exploration of the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a leading-order focusing energy critical inhomogeneous nonlinearity and a defocusing perturbation.

Abstract:We study the global well-posedness of the two-dimensional defocusing fourth-order Schrödinger initial value problem with power type nonlinearities $\vert u\vert^{2k}u$ where $k$ is a positive integer. By using the $I$-method, we prove that global well-posedness is satisfied in the Sobolev spaces $H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ for $2-\frac{3}{4k}<s<2$.

Abstract:We study the stability of elliptic solutions to the integrable defocusing fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger (4NLS) equation with respect to subharmonic perturbations. With the help of the squared-eigenfunction connection, we prove the spectral stability by relating the Lax spectrum to the stability spectrum. We establish the orbital stability of elliptic solutions to the 4NLS equation by constructing a Lyapunov functional.

Abstract:We study the large-time behavior of global energy class solutions of the one dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a general localized potential term and a defocusing nonlinear term. By using a new type of interaction Morawetz estimate localized to an exterior region, we prove that these solutions decompose into a free wave and a weakly localized part which is asymptotically orthogonal to any fixed free wave. We further show that the $L^2$ norm of this weakly localized part is concentrated in the region $|x| \leq t^{1/2+}$, and that the energy ($\dot{H}^1$) norm is concentrated in $|x| \leq t^{1/3+}$.

Abstract:We study the Cauchy problem for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation under the assumption that the solution vanishes as $x \to + \infty$ and approaches an oscillatory plane wave as $x \to -\infty$. We first develop an inverse scattering transform formalism for solutions satisfying such step-like boundary conditions. Using this formalism, we prove that there exists a global solution of the corresponding Cauchy problem and establish a representation for this solution in terms of the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. By performing a steepest descent analysis of this Riemann-Hilbert problem, we identify three asymptotic sectors in the half-plane $t \geq 0$ of the $xt$-plane and derive asymptotic formulas for the solution in each of these sectors. Finally, by restricting the constructed solutions to the half-line $x \geq 0$, we find a class of solutions with asymptotically time-periodic boundary values previously sought for in the context of the NLS half-line problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the global well-posedness and scattering of 3D defocusing, cubic Schrödinger equation. Recently, Dodson [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2004.09618" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.09618">arXiv:2004.09618</a>] studied the global well-posedness in a critical Sobolev space $\dot{W}^{11/7,7/6}$. In this paper, we aim to show that if the initial data belongs to $\dot H^\frac12$ to guarantee the local existence, then some extra weak space which is subcritical, is sufficient to prove the global well-posedness. More precisely, we prove that if the initial data belongs to $\dot{H}^{1/2}\cap \dot{W}^{s,1}$ for $12/13<s \leqslant 1$, then the corresponding solution exists globally and scatters.

Abstract:We consider the defocusing energy-critical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation (INLS) $iu_t + \Delta u = |x|^{-b}|u|^{k}u$ in $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^{n}$ where $n \geq 3$, $0<b<\min(2, n/2)$, and $k=(4-2b)/(n-2)$. We show that for every spherically symmetric initial data $\phi \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$, or preferably $\dot{H}^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the solution is globally well-posed and scatters for every such $n$ and $b$ except for $n=4$ with $1\leq b<2$ and $n=5$ with $1/2\leq b\leq 5/4$. We mainly apply the arguments of Tao (2005), but inspired by the work of Aloui and Tayachi (2021), we utilize Lorentz spaces to define spacetime norms. This method is distinct from the widespread concentration compactness principle and establishes a quantitative bound for the solution's spacetime norm. The bound has an exponential form $C\exp(CE[\phi]^C)$ in terms of the energy $E[\phi]$, similar to Tao's work.

Additionally, the asymptotic stability property for the N-soliton solutions of the defocusing NLS equation sufficiently is obtained.

Abstract:A direct approach for the quasi-periodic wave solutions to the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation is proposed based on the theta functions and Hirota's bilinear method. We transform the problem into a system of algebraic equations, which can be formulated into a least squares problem and then solved by using numerical iterative methods. A rigorous asymptotic analysis demonstrates that these solutions can be classified into two categories: quasi-periodic oscillatory waves and quasi-periodic dark solitons. Singular behaviors may arise in the former case. The numerical results obtained for both the ( 1 + 1 ) -dimensional and ( 2 + 1 ) -dimensional equations are consistent with the theoretical results. Additionaly, the system of algebraic equations can be further extended to address the Riemann–Schottky problem for hyperelliptic curves with 2 infinite points.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the global well-posedness of defocusing 3D quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger equation \begin{align*} i\partial_t u + \frac12\Delta u = |u| u, \end{align*} in its sharp critical weighted space $\mathcal F \dot H_x^{1/2}$ for radial data. Killip, Masaki, Murphy, and Visan [2017, NoDEA] have proved its global well-posedness and scattering, if the $\mathcal F \dot H_x^{1/2}$-norm of the solution is bounded in the maximal lifespan. Now, we remove this a priori assumption for the global well-posedness statement in the radial case. Our method is based on the almost conservation of pseudo conformal energy. This energy scales like $\dot H_x^{-1}$, which is supercritical. We are still able to derive the global well-posedness using this monotone quantity. The main observation is that we can establish the local solution in supercritical weighted space when the initial time is away from the origin.

Abstract:Initial-boundary value problems for integrable nonlinear partial differential equations have become tractable in recent years due to the development of so-called unified transform techniques. The main obstruction to applying these methods in practice is that calculation of the spectral transforms of the initial and boundary data requires knowledge of too many boundary conditions, more than are required make the problem well-posed. The elimination of the unknown boundary values is frequently addressed in the spectral domain via the so-called global relation, and types of boundary conditions for which the global relation can be solved are called \emph{linearizable}. For the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the global relation is only known to be explicitly solvable in rather restrictive situations, namely homogeneous boundary conditions of Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin (mixed) type. General nonhomogeneous boundary conditions are not known to be linearizable. In this paper, we propose an explicit approximation for the nonlinear Dirichlet-to-Neumann map supplied by the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation and use it to provide approximate solutions of general nonhomogeneous boundary value problems for this equation posed as an initial-boundary value problem on the half-line. Our method sidesteps entirely the solution of the global relation. The accuracy of our method is proven in the semiclassical limit, and we provide explicit asymptotics for the solution in the interior of the quarter-plane space-time domain.

Abstract:We study the long time dynamics of the defocussing NLS equation. Compared with previous literature, we revisit the direct and inverse scattering map to obtain asymptotics in some weighted energy space that requires less restrictive decay and regularity assumptions. The main result is derived from an application of uniform resolvent bound and an approximation argument in the spirit of Riemann-Lebesgue lemma. As a consequence, our result depicts the long time dynamics of the zeros of the solution to the defocussing NLS equation.
