Abstract:Seismicity in the Los Angeles metropolitan area has been primarily attributed to the regional stress loading. Below the urban areas, earthquake sequences have occurred over time showing migration off the faults and providing evidence that secondary processes may be involved in their evolution. Combining high-frequency seismic attenuation with other geophysical observations is a powerful tool for understanding which Earth properties distinguish regions with ongoing seismicity. We develop the first high-resolution 3D seismic attenuation models across the region east of downtown Los Angeles using 5,600 three-component seismograms from local earthquakes recorded by a dense seismic array. We present frequency-dependent peak delay and coda-attenuation tomography as proxies for seismic scattering and absorption, respectively. The scattering models show high sensitivity to the seismicity along some of the major faults, such as the Cucamonga fault and the San Jacinto fault zone, while a channel of low scattering in the basement extends from near the San Andreas fault westward. In the vicinity of the Fontana seismic sequence, high absorption, low scattering, and seismicity migration across a fault network suggest fluid-driven processes. Our attenuation and fault network imaging characterize near-fault zones and rock-fluid properties beneath the study area for future improvements in seismic hazard evaluation.
Anomalous Lower Crustal Structure and Origin of Magmatism in the Southeastern Margin of the South China Sea

Abstract:Late Cenozoic continental rifting and breakup separated the southern margin of the South China Sea (SCS) from the northern margin. It remains unknown whether the high-density/velocity zones (HVZs) in the lower crust extend southwards from the northeastern margin of the SCS to the conjugate southern margin. We integrated two newly acquired and processed multichannel seismic reflection profiles with gravity and magnetic data across the Liyue (Reed) Bank and north Palawan basin to clarify the characteristics of crustal structure and their relationship to post-rift magmatism. Our results show an asymmetric distribution of the HVZs in the conjugate margins. The lower crust anomalous reflections are isolated and mostly restricted in the areas of the oceancontinent transition (OCT) and the distal sag. In gravity modeling, the crustal thickness decreases from similar to 20 km in the proximal sag to a minimum of similar to 6 km in the distal sag, and these anomalous reflections spatially correspond to high-density zones no more than 4 km in thickness. The magmatic features are presented by igneous intrusions at the top of the basement that deform post-rift strata in the Early Miocene. These HVZs, above which the crustal stretching factor is 3.3-5.8, support that an anomalously hot asthenospheric mantle persisted during lithospheric thinning, resulting in magmatic underplating and density drop in the uppermost mantle during early breakup.
Evidence of power-law flow in the Mojave desert mantle

Abstract:Studies of the Earth's response to large earthquakes can be viewed as large rock deformation experiments in which sudden stress changes induce viscous flow in the lower crust and upper mantle that lead to observable postseismic surface deformation1. Laboratory experiments suggest that viscous flow of deforming hot lithospheric rocks is characterized by a power law in which strain rate is proportional to stress raised to a power, n (refs 2, 3). Most geodynamic models of flow in the lower crust and upper mantle, however, resort to newtonian (linear) stress–strain rate relations4,5,6,7,8,9,10. Here we show that a power-law model of viscous flow in the mantle with n = 3.5 successfully explains the spatial and temporal evolution of transient surface deformation following the 1992 Landers11 and 1999 Hector Mine12 earthquakes in southern California. A power-law rheology implies that viscosity varies spatially with stress causing localization of strain, and varies temporally as stress evolves, rendering newtonian models untenable. Our findings are consistent with laboratory-derived flow law parameters for hot and wet olivine—the most abundant mineral in the upper mantle—and support the contention that, at least beneath the Mojave desert5,6, the upper mantle is weaker than the lower crust.

Seismic evidence for widespread western-US deep-crustal deformation caused by extension

Abstract:Laboratory experiments have established that many of the materials comprising the Earth are strongly anisotropic in terms of seismic-wave speeds. Observations of azimuthal and radial anisotropy in the upper mantle are attributed to the lattice-preferred orientation of olivine caused by the shear strains associated with deformation, and provide some of the most direct evidence for deformation and flow within the Earth's interior. Although observations of crustal radial anisotropy would improve our understanding of crustal deformation and flow patterns resulting from tectonic processes, large-scale observations have been limited to regions of particularly thick crust. Here we show that observations from ambient noise tomography in the western United States reveal strong deep (middle to lower)-crustal radial anisotropy that is confined mainly to the geological provinces that have undergone significant extension during the Cenozoic Era (since approximately 65 Myr ago). The coincidence of crustal radial anisotropy with the extensional provinces of the western United States suggests that the radial anisotropy results from the lattice-preferred orientation of anisotropic crustal minerals caused by extensional deformation. These observations also provide support for the hypothesis that the deep crust within these regions has undergone widespread and relatively uniform strain in response to crustal thinning and extension.
Melting of Recycled Ancient Crust Responsible for the Gutenberg Discontinuity

Abstract:A discontinuity in the seismic velocity associated with the lithosphere-asthenosphere interface, known as the Gutenberg discontinuity, is enigmatic in its origin. While partial mantle melts are frequently suggested to explain this discontinuity, it is not well known which factors critically regulate the melt production. Here, we report geochemical evidence showing that the melt fractions in the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary were enhanced not only by accumulation of compacted carbonated melts related to recycled ancient marine sediments, but also by partial melting of a pyroxene-rich mantle domain related to the recycled oceanic eclogite/pyroxenites. This conclusion is derived from the first set of Mg isotope data for a suite of young petit-spot basalts erupted on the northwest Pacific plate, where a clearly defined Gutenberg discontinuity exists. Our results reveal a specific linkage between the Gutenberg discontinuity beneath the normal oceanic regions and the recycling of ancient subducted crust and carbonate through the deep Earth.
Receiver Function Investigations of Seismic Anisotropy Layering Beneath Southern California

Abstract:Seismic azimuthal anisotropy characterized by shear wave splitting analyses using teleseismic XKS phases (including SKS, SKKS, and PKS) is widely employed to constrain the deformation field in the Earth's crust and mantle. Due to the near‐vertical incidence of the XKS arrivals, the resulting splitting parameters (fast polarization orientations and splitting times) have an excellent horizontal but poor vertical resolution, resulting in considerable ambiguities in the geodynamic interpretation of the measurements. Here we use P‐to‐S converted phases from the Moho and the 410‐ (d410) and 660‐km (d660) discontinuities to investigate anisotropy layering beneath Southern California. Similarities between the resulting splitting parameters from the XKS and P‐to‐S converted phases from the d660 suggest that the lower mantle beneath the study area is azimuthally isotropic. Similarly, significant azimuthal anisotropy is not present in the mantle transition zone on the basis of the consistency between the splitting parameters obtained using P‐to‐S converted phases from the d410 and d660. Crustal anisotropy measurements exhibit a mean splitting time of 0.2 ± 0.1 s and mostly NW‐SE fast orientations, which are significantly different from the dominantly E‐W fast orientations revealed using XKS and P‐to‐S conversions from the d410 and d660. Anisotropy measurements using shear waves with different depths of origin suggest that the Earth's upper mantle is the major anisotropic layer beneath Southern California. Additionally, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of applying a set of azimuthal anisotropy analysis techniques to reduce ambiguities in the depth of the source of the observed anisotropy.

Abstract:We observe high‐frequency scatterers consistent with the interpretation of a tabular high‐velocity structure under the Indian Ocean as an ancient subducted slab. We use a previously rarely used raypath, P waves scattered in the slab into PKP waves (P∗ PKP), from 12 earthquakes and explosions in five locations recorded on the antique LASA (Large Aperture Seismic Array) located in Montana, United States. The scatterers concentrate in the mantle transition zone and ∼ 1,500 km depths, in the locations where the fast anomalies in the tomography broaden and strengthen. Our inference that the slab lingers in the upper‐ and mid‐mantle despite subducting and detaching more than 130 million years ago suggests that models of slabs sinking into the mantle may have to accommodate such long‐term stagnation.

Influence of Farallon Slab Loading on Intraplate Stress and Seismicity in Eastern North America in the Presence of Pre‐Existing Weak Zones

Abstract:Despite the stability of the continental interior, eastern North America has hosted many significant historical earthquakes. Seismicity concentrates within tectonically inherited structures, which can act as weak zones where stress accumulates. Within these zones, systematic stress rotations may be explained by long‐wavelength sources. We test the hypothesis that mantle‐flow driven by the Farallon slab contributes to intraplate seismicity via the reactivation of pre‐existing faults. We model the stress field using seismically constrained global high‐resolution finite‐element flow models with CitcomS. To isolate the slab's effect, we vary its buoyancy between a case of neutrality and a case with full negative thermal buoyancy derived from tomography. Low‐viscosity lithospheric weak zones located at failed rifts, loaded by a mass anomaly at depth, transmit elevated stresses to the overlying crust. The sinking of the Farallon slab drives localized mantle flow beneath the central‐eastern US, generating a large stress amplification of 100–150 MPa peaking over the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). This stress amplification exerts a continent‐wide clockwise rotation on the stress field, which in the presence of weak zones reproduces some observed deviations of the seismically inferred SHmax from the regional borehole SHmax, bringing optimally oriented faults, closer to failure, some of which are associated with major historical earthquakes, including the Reelfoot Fault in the NMSZ and the Timiskaming Fault in Western Quebec. However, stronger lithospheric viscosity gradients, shallower weak zones, or weaker faults are still needed to fully reproduce the observed stress field in some areas.

The 2013 Wyoming Upper Mantle Earthquakes: Tomography and Tectonic Implications

Abstract:On 21 September 2013 two earthquakes (M 4.8 and 3.0, focal depths >70km) occurred in the lithospheric mantle beneath central Wyoming, which provide a rare opportunity to investigate the lithosphere rheology and dynamics. We determined a detailed 3-D P wave tomography in the source area of the Wyoming earthquakes using a large number of high-quality traveltime data of local earthquakes and teleseismic events. Our results show that the 2013 Wyoming earthquakes occurred in an isolated high-velocity (high-V) anomaly which extends down to a depth of similar to 160km. We propose two possible scenarios about the cause of the 2013 Wyoming earthquakes. One is that the high-V anomaly reflects a remnant of the subducted Farallon slab which fractured under long-term negative buoyancy and heating by the infilling asthenosphere. The other is removing of a dense mantle lithospheric root. The present results shed new light on the rheology and seismotectonics of the continental lithosphere.
Ambient noise differential adjoint tomography reveals fluid-bearing rocks near active faults in Los Angeles

Abstract:Abstract Water scarcity is a pressing issue in California. We develop ambient noise differential adjoint tomography that improves the sensitivity to fluid-bearing rocks by canceling bias caused by noise sources. Here we image the shallow S-wave velocity structure using this method beneath a linear seismic array (LASSIE) in Los Angeles Basin, which shows significant velocity reduction marking a major regional water producer, the Silverado aquifer, along with other fluid-bearing structures. Based on the S-wave tomography and previous P-wave studies, we derive the porosity in Long Beach and discover that the rock from 1-2 km depth surrounding the Newport-Inglewood Fault contains abundant fluids with pore-fluid fraction ~0.33. The high-porosity rock around the fault coincides with previously observed week-long shallow seismicity south of LASSIE array in Long Beach. The imaged S-wave velocity in the top layer shows a similar trend in the geotechnical layer Vs 30, suggesting additional applications to ground motion prediction.

Evidence for a Chemical-Thermal Structure at Base of Mantle from Sharp Lateral P-wave Variations Beneath Central America

Abstract:Compressional waves that sample the lowermost mantle west of Central America show a rapid change in travel times of up to 4 s over a sampling distance of 300 km and a change in waveforms. The differential travel times of the PKP waves (which traverse Earth's core) correlate remarkably well with predictions for S-wave tomography. Our modeling suggests a sharp transition in the lowermost mantle from a broad slow region to a broad fast region with a narrow zone of slowest anomaly next to the boundary beneath the Cocos Plate and the Caribbean Plate. The structure may be the result of ponding of ancient subducted Farallon slabs situated near the edge of a thermal and chemical upwelling.

Abstract:Recent seismic studies presented evidence for mantle upwelling and magmatic intrusions in the Cathaysia Block in South China. However, the key evidence or crustal velocity structure to understand crustal magma chambers that contributed to ore mineralization remain unclear. In this study. We collected a large number of Pg phase arrivals from 2009 to 2017 and carried out a P-wave tomography analysis in South China. Our results reveal a low-velocity anomaly adjacent to the Shaoguan region, which may be associated with concealed magmatic intrusions in this area. These intrusions may be linked with the widespread Yanshanian metallogeny in this region.
Lithospheric Delamination Beneath the Southern Puna Plateau Resolved by Local Earthquake Tomography

Abstract:We present a local earthquake tomography to illuminate the crustal and uppermost mantle structure beneath the southern Puna plateau and to test the delamination hypothesis. Vp and Vp/Vs ratios were obtained using travel time variations recorded by 75 temporary seismic stations between 2007 and 2009. In the upper crust, prominent low Vp anomalies are found beneath the main volcanic centers, indicating the presence of magma and melt beneath the southern Puna plateau. Beneath the Moho at around 90‐km depth, a strong high Vp anomaly is detected just west of the giant backarc Cerro Galan ignimbrite caldera. This high Vp anomaly is only resolved if earthquakes with an azimuthal gap up to 300° are included in the inversion. However, we show through data subset and synthetic tests that the anomaly is robust due to our specific station‐event geometry and interpret it as a delaminated block of lower crust and uppermost mantle lithosphere under the southern Puna plateau. The low velocities in the crust are interpreted as a product of the delamination event that triggered the rise of fluids and melts into the crust and induced the high topography in this part of the plateau. The tomography also reveals the existence of low‐velocity anomalies that link arc magmatism at the Ojos del Salado volcanic center with slab seismicity clusters at depths of about 100 and 150 km and support fluid transport in the mantle wedge due to dehydration reaction within the subducted slab.

Abstract:In the framework of a recent wave equation-based traveltime seismic tomography, we show that incorporating Moho-reflected phases (PmP and SmS) in addition to the direct P and S phases can significantly increase tomography resolution in the lower crust and this may provide additional evidence to resolve important tectonic issues. To highlight the resolving power of the new strategy, we apply it in the region around the 1992 Landers earthquake (M-w = 7.3) in Southern California using seismic arrivals from local earthquakes, obtaining 3-D high-resolution P and S wave crustal velocity models and Poisson's ratio structures. In the upper crust, our method confirmed features that had been previously found. However, in the middle-to-lower crust, we found low-velocity anomalies on the southeastern section of the San Jacinto Fault and high V-p and low V-s structures to the west of the Big Bear earthquake, which may be related to upwelling of partial melt from the mantle.
Spatially-varied crustal deformation indicating seismicity at faults intersection in the SE margin of the Tibetan Plateau: Evidence of S-wave splitting from microseismic identification

Abstract:The Sanjiang Lateral Collision Zone (SLCZ) in the SE margin of the Tibetan Plateau is a special area where several strike-slip faults intersect, resulting in strong deformation and frequent earthquakes. We employ seismic waveforms recorded by a dense temporary broadband array (SJ array) and regional permanent stations to construct more complete microseismic catalogs by the microseismic identification in the SLCZ. New microseismic catalogs effectively increase the number of small earthquakes, revealing the details of the fault structures and providing many more records for S-wave splitting (SWS) analysis. It provides with an uncommon opportunity to detect the detailed upper crustal anisotropy in the fault intersection zone of SLCZ and to dissect the influence of faults, such as the Lijiang-Xiaojinhe fault and Red river fault, on crustal deformation. The spatial distribution of SWS parameters suggests multiple disturbance mechanisms to the upper crustal anisotropy in the study zone. Spatial distribution of dual dominant polarization directions of fast S waves near the block boundary faults uncovers the stress-focus range. Strong deformation from SWS data indicates frequent local seismicity. It reveals the spatial upper crustal deformation indicated by SWS parameters is closely related to not only stress, fault and local structure, but also local seismicity.

Deep Earthquakes in Subducting Slabs Hosted in Highly Anisotropic Rock Fabric

Abstract:Analysis of deep subduction-zone earthquakes, those at depths greater than 60 km, reveals the physical and chemical properties of a descending oceanic lithosphere at mantle depths. Over the past five decades, it has been observed that a large fraction of deep earthquakes has non-double-couple (non-DC) seismic radiation patterns. In contrast, shallow earthquakes tend to have DC radiation patterns due to mechanisms of shear faulting. These observations have been used to argue that deep earthquakes rupture differently from shallow earthquakes. Here we show that the observed global distribution of non-DC deep earthquakes could be caused by shear faulting mechanisms, but in a highly anisotropic laminated rock fabric that surrounds the deep earthquakes within subducted slabs. For intermediate-depth earthquakes (~60–300 km), we found a large shear-wave anisotropy of ~25%, possibly caused by laminated fabric or aligned melt pockets oriented parallel to the slab interface, which provides new supporting evidence for the metamorphic dehydration reactions in slabs. However, at deep-focus depths (>300 km), the putative metastable phase-change mechanism alone cannot explain the seismic anisotropy. Instead, our results and those from recent experiments suggest materials such as magnesite, or perhaps carbonatite melt, may play a role in generating deep-focus earthquakes.
Seismic evidence for melt-rich lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary beneath young slab at Cascadia

Abstract:Abstract The Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary (LAB) beneath oceanic plates is generally imaged as a sharp seismic velocity reduction, suggesting the presence of partial melts. However, the fate of a melt-rich LAB is unclear after these plates descend into the mantle at subduction zones. Recent geophysical studies suggest its persistence with down-going old and cold slabs, but whether or not it is commonly present remains unclear, especially for young and warm slabs such as in the Cascadia subduction zone. Here we provide evidence for its presence at Cascadia in the form of a large (9.8 $$\pm$$ ± 1.5 $$\%$$ % ) decrease in shear-wave velocity over a very small (<3 km) depth interval. Similarly large and sharp seismic velocity reduction at the bottom of both old and young slabs, as well as along the base of oceanic plates before subduction, possibly represents widespread presence of melts. The melt-rich sub-slab LAB may strongly influence subduction dynamics and viscoelastic earthquake cycles.

The San Andreas Fault Paleoseismic Record at Elizabeth Lake: Why are There Fewer Surface-Rupturing Earthquakes on the Mojave Section?

Abstract:ABSTRACT The structural complexity of active faults and the stress release history along the fault system may exert control on the locus and extent of individual earthquake ruptures. Fault bends, in particular, are often invoked as a possible mechanism for terminating earthquake ruptures. However, there are few records available to examine how these factors may influence the along-fault recurrence of earthquakes. We present a new paleoearthquake chronology for the southern San Andreas fault at Elizabeth Lake and integrate this record with existing paleoearthquake records to examine how the timing and frequency of earthquakes vary through a major restraining bend. This restraining bend features a mature, throughgoing right-lateral strike-slip fault, two major fault intersections, proposed subsurface fault dip changes, and a >200 km long section of fault misaligned with the regional plate motion. The Frazier Mountain, Elizabeth Lake, Pallett Creek, Wrightwood, and Pitman Canyon paleoseismic sites are located on this relatively linear surface trace of the San Andreas fault between fault bends. Our paleoseismic investigations at Elizabeth Lake document 4–5 earthquakes, since ∼1100 C.E., similar to the number of earthquakes recorded at Pallett Creek. In contrast, the Frazier Mountain and Wrightwood sites each record 8–9 earthquakes during this same time period. Differences in earthquake frequency demonstrate that fewer earthquakes rupture the central portion of the restraining bend than occur near the fault bends and intersections. Furthermore, the similarity of earthquake records from the Bidart Fan paleoseismic site northwest of the restraining bend and the Frazier Mountain paleoseismic site suggests that the broad, 30° curve of the Big Bend section of the San Andreas fault exerts less influence on fault rupture behavior than the 3D geometry of the Mojave sections of the fault.

Abstract:Strong strain and pore pressure changes are observed after three Mw 4.5+ local and one Mw 7.2 regional earthquakes during 2010‒2017 in borehole strainmeters near Anza, California. The strain change emerges immediately after the earthquakes and lasts 40‒100 days with amplitudes up to 10 −7 , larger than the coseismic strain offsets. The pore pressure exhibits change immediately after the earthquakes at some boreholes and with a delay of 4‒10 days at the others. A joint analysis of the observed postseismic strain and pore pressure change suggests that the postseismic strains could be explained by combined effects of poroelastic deformation due to earthquake-induced pore pressure change and elastic deformation due to an earthquake-triggered aseismic slip on a local fault. Our study indicates that, in addition to possible aseismic fault slips triggered by an earthquake, pore pressure changes after the earthquake could be even more important in producing postseismic deformation.

Cause of Enigmatic Upper-Mantle Earthquakes in Central Wyoming

Abstract:Abstract Earthquakes deeper than 60 km generally occur in subducting slabs. However, on 21 September 2013 two earthquakes (M 4.8 and 3.0) occurred at ∼71 to 75 km depths in the upper mantle beneath central Wyoming in the stable North American continent, where there is no actively subducting slab at present. The cause of the two events is still unclear. Here, we present detailed 3D P-wave isotropic and anisotropic tomography down to 750 km depth under Wyoming and adjacent areas. Our result shows that the two Wyoming events took place within a high-velocity (high-V) body at 0–160 km depths, which may be part of dense continental lithosphere. Another high-V body exists at ∼300 to 500 km depths, which may reflect a remnant of the subducted Farallon slab. A significant low-velocity (low-V) zone appears at ∼200 to 300 km depths between the two high-V bodies, and the low-V zone exhibits seismic anisotropy that VP is greater in the vertical direction than that in the horizontal direction. The low-V zone may include ascending fluids from dehydration of the subducted slab remnant, which was promoted by the nearby hot Yellowstone plume. It is highly possible that the ascending fluids induced the 2013 Wyoming upper-mantle earthquakes.
