Abstract:As quantum information science and technology (QIST) is becoming more prevalent and occurring not only in research labs but also in industry, many educators are considering how best to incorporate learning about quantum mechanics into various levels of education. Although much of the focus has been on quantum concepts in non-lab courses, current work in QIST has a substantial experimental component. Many instructors of undergraduate lab courses want to provide their students the opportunity to work with quantum experiments. One common way this is done is through a sequence of quantum optics experiments often referred to as the ``single-photon experiments.'' These experiments demonstrate fundamental quantum phenomena with equipment common to research labs; however, they are resource intensive and cannot be afforded by all institutions. It is therefore imperative to know what unique affordances these experiments provide to students. As a starting point, we surveyed and interviewed instructors who use the single-photon experiments in undergraduate courses, asking how and why they use the experiments. We describe the most commonly used experiments in both quantum and beyond-first-year lab courses, the prevalence of actions the students perform, and the learning goals, ranging from conceptual knowledge to lab skills to student affect. Finally, we present some strategies from these data demonstrating how instructors have addressed the common challenges of preparing students to work with conceptually and technically complex experiments and balancing the practice of technical skills with the completion of the experiments.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Fluorescence microscopy is a ubiquitous technique in the life sciences that uses fluorescent molecules to visualize specific components of biological specimens. This powerful tool has revolutionized biology, and it represents a perfect example of the advancements enabled by biophysical research and technology development. However, despite its central role in contemporary research, fluorescence is hardly covered in typical secondary school curricula, with few hands-on “entry-level” materials available for secondary school teachers to introduce this important method to their students. Furthermore, most commercially available fluorescence microscopes are prohibitively costly and often appear as “black boxes.” To address this gap, we introduce here an experimental, research-grade fluorescence microscopy kit and educational resource targeted at secondary school students and teachers. Microscope in Action is an interdisciplinary resource based on active learning that combines concepts from both optics and biology. The students assemble a functional microscope from basic optical, mechanical, and electronic parts, thereby testing and understanding the function of each component “hands-on.” We also present sample preparation and imaging activities that can be incorporated to enable an exploration of biological topics with the assembled microscope and exercises in which students actively learn and practice scientific thinking by collecting and analyzing data. Although the resource was developed with secondary schools in mind, the variety of available protocols and the adjustable module lengths make it suitable for different age groups and topics, from middle school to PhD level, from short workshops to courses spanning several days.
femtoPro: virtual-reality interactive training simulator of an ultrafast laser laboratory

Abstract:The huge field of optics and photonics research and development is in constant demand of well-trained experts. However, it is challenging to teach efficiently the setup process of complicated optical experiments due to limited hardware availability and eye-safety concerns, in particular, in the case of femtosecond lasers. We have developed an interactive simulation of an ultrafast laser laboratory ("femtoPro") for teaching and training, implementing physical models for the calculation and visualization of Gaussian laser beam propagation, ultrashort optical pulses, their modulation by typical optical elements, and linear as well as nonlinear light–matter interaction. This facilitates the setup and simulated measurement procedure, in virtual reality (VR) and at real-time speeds, of various typical optical arrangements and spectroscopy schemes such as telescopes, interferometers, or pulse characterization. femtoPro can be employed to supplement academic teaching in connection with regular courses in optics or spectroscopy, to train future scientists and engineers in the field of (ultrafast) optics in practical skills, to communicate to other researchers how to set up and align a particular experiment, to "test-build" and simulate new designs of optical setups, to simulate ultrafast spectroscopy data, to offer practical exercises to high-school students, and to reach out to the general public.
Applying the Principles of Augmented Learning to Photonics Laboratory Work

Abstract:This paper introduces "OPTOTEACH", a new teaching system for photonics lab work, designed by Harz University and successfully released on the German market by HarzOptics. OPTOTEACH is the first POF-WDM teaching system, specifically designed to cover a multitude of lab experiments in the field of optical communication technology. It is illustrated, how this lab system is supplemented by a newly developed optical teaching software - "OPTOSOFT" - and how the combination of system and software creates a unique augmented learning environment. The paper details, how the didactic concept for the software was conceptualised and introduces the latest beta version. OPTOSOFT is specifically designed not only as an attachment to OPTOTEACH, it also allows students to rehearse various aspects of theoretical optics and experience a fully interactive and feature-rich self-learning environment. The paper further details the first experiences educators at Harz University have made working with the lab system as well as the teaching software. So far, the augmented learning concept was received mostly positive, although there is some potential for further optimisation concerning integration and pacing of various interactive modules.

TWINKLE: An open-source two-photon microscope for teaching and research

Abstract:Many laboratories use two-photon microscopy through commercial suppliers, or homemade designs of considerable complexity. The integrated nature of these systems complicates customization, troubleshooting as well as grasping the principles of two-photon microscopy. Here, we present "Twinkle": a microscope for Two-photon Imaging in Neuroscience, and Kit for Learning and Education. It is a fully open, high-performance and cost-effective research and teaching microscope without any custom parts beyond what can be fabricated in a university machine shop. The instrument features a large field of view, using a modern objective with a long working distance and large back aperture to maximize the fluorescence signal. We document our experiences using this system as a teaching tool in several two week long workshops, exemplify scientific use cases, and conclude with a broader note on the place of our work in the growing space of open-source scientific instrumentation.

Abstract:Recent advances in light‐based technologies combined with increasing demand for early diagnostics and improvements in patient care are the major drivers in the expansion of the global biophotonics market with an estimated value reaching $91.3 billion by 2024. To address the growing need for interdisciplinary scientists, clinicians, and engineers, this study presents a structured approach to educational and outreach activities in biophotonics applied over two consecutive years aiming at improving the workshop design based on students' and teachers' feedback. As a rapidly growing field, biophotonics demonstrates an increasingly higher demand for interdisciplinary professionals and requires the implementation of a structured approach to educational and outreach activities focused on appropriate curriculum, and teaching and learning for audiences with diverse technical backgrounds and learning styles. Our study shows the main findings upon applying this approach to biophotonics workshops delivered 2 consecutive years while updating and improving learning outcomes, teaching strategies, workshop content based on student and teacher feedback. We provided resources for a variety of lecture‐based, experimental, computer simulation activities. Quality of subject matter, teaching, and overall learning was rated as "Very good" or "Good" by 88%, 76%, and 82% of students in average, respectively. Application of our teaching strategies and materials during short‐ and long‐term workshops/courses could potentially increase the interest in pursuing careers in the biophotonics field and related areas, leading to standardized approaches in designing education and outreach events across centers.

Abstract:A good experimental task for a high school physics competition requires an interesting and relatable topic, careful testing, and meeting constraints of time, budget and curriculum. This article presents the experimental task from the European Physics Olympiad in the year 2022. The students explored the properties of light sources, such as their colour temperature, angular light distribution, efficacy and heating. The task was stated without explicit instructions, inviting the students to devise their own approach to measurement and data processing. The original task was designed for the level slightly above the European high-school curriculum, so parts of it can be directly used as a lab exercise at a university level, or simplified and given more specific instructions for inclusion in high school level education.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:We designed and built a do-it-yourself spectrograph assembly to demonstrate the concept of spectroscopy, an indispensable tool for exploring the cosmos. This spectrograph is designed for optical band (400-750 nm). It uses a transmission grating to disperse the light and a webcam to measure the spectrum. This spectrograph provides a resolving power ($\lambda/\delta\lambda$) of about 1000. This demonstration involves off-the-shelf materials costing less than \$500, thus making it an easy to build demonstration kit for a school or public setting. The kit is well-suited for performing various science experiments and acquiring hands-on experience for students to learn the concepts such as coherence, spectral orders, resolving power, absorption and emission spectra. All of these concepts are an integral part of modern astronomical observations as well as various other fields in STEM such as biomedical engineering, chemical analysis, food and water quality, etc. This kit is portable and fully modular, making it apt for outreach purposes.
Engaging young minds with particle physics

Abstract:To give teenagers a new, everyday perspective on STEM topics, we use particle physics as our main topic to engage young students. Our strategy is designed to demystify particle physics, making it more accessible and attractive early in high school. In Germany, students usually decide whether or not to continue their physics education around the age of 15. That's why our project is aimed specifically at students aged 10 to 15 to give them a real insight into particle physics research before they have to make a final decision about continuing physics. Our efforts have focused on creating educational and engaging workshops for young learners. We have reached over 620 students across these age groups through more than 25 events in the last two years. The initial results are promising, indicating that our efforts are successfully igniting a motivation for physics, especially among girls. In this proceeding, we will present our workshops, the methodologies we use and a first evaluation.

Abstract:Single-molecule-sensitive microscopy and spectroscopy are transforming biophysics and materials science laboratories. Techniques such as fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and single-molecule sensitive fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) are now commonly available in research laboratories but are as yet infrequently available in teaching laboratories. We describe inexpensive electronics and open-source software that bridges this gap, making state-of-the-art research capabilities accessible to undergraduates interested in biophysics. We include a discussion of the intensity correlation function relevant to FCS and how it can be determined from photon arrival times. We demonstrate the system with a measurement of the hydrodynamic radius of a protein using FCS that is suitable for the undergraduate teaching laboratory. The FPGA-based electronics, which are easy to construct, are suitable for more advanced measurements as well, and several applications are described. As implemented, the system has 8 ns timing resolution, can control up to four laser sources, and can collect information from as many as four photon-counting detectors.

Abstract:Scientific research is to date largely restricted to wealthy laboratories in developed nations due to the necessity of complex and expensive equipment. This inequality limits the capacity of science to be used as a diplomatic channel. Maker movements use open-source technologies including additive manufacturing (3D printing) and laser cutting, together with low-cost computers for developing novel products. This movement is setting the groundwork for a revolution, allowing scientific equipment to be sourced at a fraction of the cost and has the potential to increase the availability of equipment for scientists around the world. Science education is increasingly recognized as another channel for science diplomacy. In this perspective, we introduce the idea that the Maker movement and open-source technologies have the potential to revolutionize science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education worldwide. We present an open-source STEM didactic tool called SCOPES (Sparking Curiosity through Open-source Platforms in Education and Science). SCOPES is self-contained, independent of local resources, and cost-effective. SCOPES can be adapted to communicate complex subjects from genetics to neurobiology, perform real-world biological experiments and explore digitized scientific samples. We envision such platforms will enhance science diplomacy by providing a means for scientists to share their findings with classrooms and for educators to incorporate didactic concepts into STEM lessons. By providing students the opportunity to design, perform, and share scientific experiments, students also experience firsthand the benefits of a multinational scientific community. Abstract:Abstract Photon sciences and technologies establish the building blocks for myriad scientific and engineering frontiers in life and energy sciences. Because of their overarching functionality, the developmental roadmap and opportunities underpinned by photonics are often semiotically mediated by the delineation of subject areas of application. In this perspective article, we map current and emerging linkages between three intersecting areas of research stewarded by advanced photonics technologies, namely light by design, outlined as (a) quantum and structured photonics, (b) light–matter interactions in accelerators and accelerator-based light sources, and (c) ultrafast sciences and quantum molecular dynamics. In each section, we will concentrate on state-of-the-art achievements and present prospective applications in life sciences, biochemistry, quantum optics and information sciences, and environmental and chemical engineering, all founded on a broad range of photon sources and methodologies. We hope that this interconnected mapping of challenges and opportunities seeds new concepts, theory, and experiments in the advancement of ultrafast photon sciences and light–matter interactions. Through this mapping, we hope to inspire a critically interdisciplinary approach to the science and applications of light by design.

Abstract:In this paper we present the focus, objectives, content and implementation of the elective course Selected Demonstration Experiments designed for physics teaching students. We map students' personal experiences with the implementation of physics experiments in lower secondary school and high school, as well as their knowledge of the possibilities of demonstrating physical phenomena through experiments with simple tools. The continuing lack of experimentally oriented activities in physics education naturally has a negative impact on the experimental skills of physics teaching students. In this context, the prospective teacher should be able to carry out a wide range of physical experiments, demonstrations, experiments and measurements, interpret them appropriately and involve them in active perception. The lack of experimental equipment in schools for individual (or small group) student work can be at least partially overcome by the use of commonly available simple tools (plastic containers, stationery household tools, toys). Their availability is a strong motivation for individual observations, investigations and measurements at home. In the school laboratory, the teacher can easily provide such tools for frontal experiments, parallel work by groups of students or project work following observations at home. We consider and present a model of blended learning in an educational laboratory environment. In this paper we present selected ideas for physics observations and experiments with simple tools in the form of engaging video demonstrations. We have included the creation of our own educational video demonstration as a student semester project in the course presented. We present the success of achieving our learning objectives through student assessment.
eduSPIM: Light Sheet Microscopy in the Museum

Abstract:Light sheet microscopy in the museum: Light sheet microscopy (or selective plane illumination microscopy) is an important imaging technique in the life sciences. At the same time, this technique is also ideally suited for community outreach projects, because it produces visually appealing, highly dynamic images of living organisms and its working principle can be understood with basic optics knowledge. Still, the underlying concepts are widely unknown to the non-scientific public. On the occasion of the UNESCO International Year of Light, a technical museum in Dresden, Germany, launched a special, interactive exhibition. We built a fully functional, educational selective plane illumination microscope (eduSPIM) to demonstrate how developments in microscopy promote discoveries in biology. Design principles of an educational light sheet microscope: To maximize educational impact, we radically reduced a standard light sheet microscope to its essential components without compromising functionality and incorporated stringent safety concepts beyond those needed in the lab. Our eduSPIM system features one illumination and one detection path and a sealed sample chamber. We image fixed zebrafish embryos with fluorescent vasculature, because the structure is meaningful to laymen and visualises the optical principles of light sheet microscopy. Via a simplified interface, visitors acquire fluorescence and transmission data simultaneously. The eduspim design is tailored easily to fit numerous applications: The universal concepts presented here may also apply to other scientific approaches that are communicated to laymen in interactive settings. The specific eduSPIM design is adapted easily for various outreach and teaching activities. eduSPIM may even prove useful for labs needing a simple SPIM. A detailed parts list and schematics to rebuild eduSPIM are provided.
Fluorescence for high school students

Abstract:In a not obligatory series of lessons for high school students in the Netherlands we discuss the fluorescence aspects of anthracene. These lessons were developed because HiSPARC (High school Project on Astrophysics Research with Cosmics) detection of cosmic rays are available for different secondary schools. With the help of special designed scintillator detection stations, containing anthracene, cosmic rays can be detected. Fluorescence of anthracene is one of the topics discussed in these series of extra curricular lessons aimed at excellent pupils working on cosmic radiation within the HiSPARC - project.

A biophotonic platform for quantitative analysis in the spatial, spectral, polarimetric, and goniometric domains

Abstract:Advanced instrumentation and versatile setups are needed for understanding light interaction with biological targets. Such instruments include (1) microscopes and 3D scanners for detailed spatial analysis, (2) spectral instruments for deducing molecular composition, (3) polarimeters for assessing structural properties, and (4) goniometers probing the scattering phase function of, e.g., tissue slabs. While a large selection of commercial biophotonic instruments and laboratory equipment are available, they are often bulky and expensive. Therefore, they remain inaccessible for secondary education, hobbyists, and research groups in low-income countries. This lack of equipment impedes hands-on proficiency with basic biophotonic principles and the ability to solve local problems with applied physics. We have designed, prototyped, and evaluated the low-cost Biophotonics, Imaging, Optical, Spectral, Polarimetric, Angular, and Compact Equipment (BIOSPACE) for high-quality quantitative analysis. BIOSPACE uses multiplexed light-emitting diodes with emission wavelengths from ultraviolet to near-infrared, captured by a synchronized camera. The angles of the light source, the target, and the polarization filters are automated by low-cost mechanics and a microcomputer. This enables multi-dimensional scatter analysis of centimeter-sized biological targets. We present the construction, calibration, and evaluation of BIOSPACE. The diverse functions of BIOSPACE include small animal spectral imaging, measuring the nanometer thickness of a bark-beetle wing, acquiring the scattering phase function of a blood smear and estimating the anisotropic scattering and the extinction coefficients, and contrasting muscle fibers using polarization. We provide blueprints, component list, and software for replication by enthusiasts and educators to simplify the hands-on investigation of fundamental optical properties in biological samples.
EIFEL—A New Approach for Digital Education

Abstract:The acceptance of digitally supported teaching has increased considerably in recent years. At the same time, however, the demands on availability, usability, and granularity of the offerings are also increasing. Especially in the study of STEM subjects, the combination of theoretically taught basics and their application and consolidation in the form of internships in the basic subjects is unfavorable in terms of time, as these are usually subject to a tight time schedule and do not provide opportunities for individual learning processes in terms of either space or time. The EIFEL project aims to develop and test the basis for the digital support of learning processes in computer science within the framework of a fellowship. On the one hand, this will allow new forms of teaching such as flipped classroom, problem-based learning with the help of virtual and remote-controlled laboratory experiments, and on the other hand, individual practice-oriented learning through flexible access to experiments in terms of time and place. It is one of eight projects supported by the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Science and Digital Society and the German Stifterverband.
