Abstract:Assessing tissues’ inhomogeneous optical properties is helpful for label-free diagnosis. In this paper, a method and a setup are proposed to assess the tissues’ inhomogeneous optical properties based on quantitative phase imaging (QPI) and dark-field microscopy using LED illumination. In the bright-field and coherent dark-field imaging, quantitative phase (QP) can be recovered from multi-frame intensity images captured at different axial positions by Transport-intensity-equation (TIE) and multi-height Gerchberg-Saxton(G-S) phase retrieval algorithms. In the incoherent dark-field imaging, some scattering samples can be observed easily without any computation and the resolution can be improved in contrast to bright-field illumination. According to the scattering-phase theorem and the statistical dispersion relation (SDR), tissues’ inhomogeneous optical properties can be assessed. In our experiments, we find, it is a good idea to combine QP maps and dark-field images to assess inhomogeneous optical properties of bio-samples. In contrast to the DHM and interferometers, our setup is cost-effective and use-flexible, thus having the potential to serve as a very powerful tool in biological applications.
Multimodal optical setup based on spectrometer and cameras combination for biological tissue characterization with spatially modulated illumination

Abstract:The application of optical techniques as tools for biomedical research has generated substantial interest for the ability of such methodologies to simultaneously measure biochemical and morphological parameters of tissue. Ongoing optimization of optical techniques may introduce such tools as alternative or complementary to conventional methodologies. The common approach shared by current optical techniques lies in the independent acquisition of tissue’s optical properties (i.e., absorption and reduced scattering coefficients) from reflected or transmitted light. Such optical parameters, in turn, provide detailed information regarding both the concentrations of clinically relevant chromophores and macroscopic structural variations in tissue. We couple a noncontact optical setup with a simple analysis algorithm to obtain absorption and scattering coefficients of biological samples under test. Technically, a portable picoprojector projects serial sinusoidal patterns at low and high spatial frequencies, while a spectrometer and two independent CCD cameras simultaneously acquire the reflected diffuse light through a single spectrometer and two separate CCD cameras having different bandpass filters at nonisosbestic and isosbestic wavelengths in front of each. This configuration fills the gaps in each other’s capabilities for acquiring optical properties of tissue at high spectral and spatial resolution. Experiments were performed on both tissue-mimicking phantoms as well as hands of healthy human volunteers to quantify their optical properties as proof of concept for the present technique. In a separate experiment, we derived the optical properties of the hand skin from the measured diffuse reflectance, based on a recently developed camera model. Additionally, oxygen saturation levels of tissue measured by the system were found to agree well with reference values. Taken together, the present results demonstrate the potential of this integrated setup for diagnostic and research applications.

Abstract:The spatial and spectral properties of the light environment underpin the appearance of scenes and objects. As such its measurement is crucial for understanding many aspects of animal behaviour, ecology and evolution, along with many more applications in fields ranging from optical physics, agriculture/plant sciences, human psychophysics, food science, architecture and materials sciences. The escalating threat of artificial light at night (ALAN) presents unique challenges for measuring the visual impact of light pollution, requiring measurement at low light levels across the human-visible and ultraviolet ranges, across all viewing angles, and often with high within-scene contrast. Here I present a hyperspectral open-source imaging system (HOSI), an innovative and low-cost solution for collecting full-field hyperspectral data. The system uses a Hamamatsu C12880MA micro spectrometer to take single-point measurements, together with a motorised gimbal for spatial control. The hardware uses off-the-shelf components and 3D printed parts, costing around GBP350 in total. The system can run directly from a computer or smartphone with a graphical user interface, making it highly portable and user-friendly. The HOSI system can take panoramic hyperspectral images that meet the difficult requirements of ALAN research, sensitive to low light around 0.001 cd.m-2, across 320-880nm range with spectral resolution of ~9nm (FWHM) and spatial resolution of ~0.2 degrees. The independent exposure of each pixel also allows for an extremely wide dynamic range that can encompass typical natural and artificially illuminated scenes, with sample night-time scans achieving peak-to-peak dynamic ranges of >50,000:1. This system's adaptability, cost-effectiveness, and open-source nature position it as a valuable tool for researchers investigating the complex relationships between light, environment, behaviour, ecology, and biodiversity, with further potential uses in many other fields.

Biophotonics web application for computer simulations in diffuse optics: fostering multidisciplinary education and research

Abstract:Computer simulations (CS) are applied for instrument design, feasibility tests and education in low-resource settings. These applications have been targeted by research biophotonics CS. However, software enabling these CS were not designed for education, as they require programming experience from users as well as specialized training to use it. In this study, we have developed and tested a diffuse-optics web application to teach tissue optics to undergraduate students with diverse learning styles and backgrounds. Students’ feedback showed that CS session using our web app received 84.6% “Very good” and ““Good” responses for overall learning, 76.9% for quality of the user manual instructions, 92.3% for quality of teaching, 100.0% for quality of subject matter among the participant respondents. Also, 92.3% of participants considered CS important for their learning process.

Abstract:We have previously reported efficient production of mature human chymase (h‐chymase) using an original system of expression in Pichia pastoris (Nakakubo et al., 2000 ), whereby recombinant h‐chymase (rh‐chymase) was secreted as a mature form with the correct N‐terminal amino acid sequence and was easily purified. In the course of investigation of secretory rh‐chymase, we also found large amounts of chymase to be present in insoluble form in the transformant cell. Although the cellular rh‐chymase had no proteolytic activity, its chymotryptic activity was restored in a reconstitution process utilizing guanidine and glutathione. As with secretory rh‐chymase, efficient purification was possible by heparin affinity chromatography. The purified cellular rh‐chymase showed the same mobility as secretory rh‐chymase in sodium dodecyl sulphate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE) before and after deglycosylation. N‐terminal amino acid sequence analysis revealed that the signal peptide had been correctly removed. Km value (5.93 mM), as well as pH profile and inhibition profile toward protease inhibitors of reconstituted cellular rh‐chymase, indicated that the rh‐chymase enzymatically closely resembles native h‐chymase. Furthermore, it showed a greatly restricted proteolytic activity towards Ang I, and formed Ang II without the further cleavage which is a feature of h‐chymase. It was thus found that the insoluble rh‐chymase stored in the cells could be solubilized and reconstituted to give the same structure as h‐chymase, not only in terms of enzyme active site but also of substrate recognition site. Efficacy and prognostic factors of treatment retention with intravenous abatacept for rheumatoid arthritis: 24-month results from an international, prospective, real-world study.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES To evaluate retention of abatacept over 24 months in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in routine clinical practice across Europe and Canada. METHODS ACTION (AbataCepT In rOutiNe clinical practice) was a prospective, observational, multicentre study of adult patients with moderate-to-severe RA who, at their physician's discretion, initiated treatment with intravenous abatacept. Enrolment occurred from May 2008 to December 2010, with up to 30 months of follow-up. The primary endpoint was the abatacept retention rate over 24 months. Crude abatacept retention rate was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Prognostic factors of abatacept retention in patients with ≥1 prior biologic failure were derived from a Cox proportional hazards regression model, accounting for clustered data. RESULTS A total of 1137 patients were enrolled (1573 patient-years on abatacept); most (89.2%) had experienced prior biologic failure. The overall crude abatacept retention rate at 24 months was 54.4% (95% confidence interval: 51.3, 57.4). Positivity for both rheumatoid factor and anti-cyclic citrullinated antibody, previous exposure to one or no anti-tumour necrosis factor agents, and cardiovascular comorbidity were prognostic of higher abatacept retention. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate ≥51 mm/hour and introduction of corticosteroid use at abatacept initiation were predictors of lower abatacept retention. Abatacept retention varied according to country. Abatacept was well tolerated without any unexpected safety signals. CONCLUSIONS In a real-world setting, intravenous abatacept treatment retention was more than 50% at 24 months. The identification of prognostic factors of abatacept retention could support individualised biologic treatment strategies in patients with moderate-to-severe RA.

Abstract:Polarization microscope is a useful technique to observe the optical anisotropic nature of biomedical specimens and provide more microstructural information than the conventional microscope. In this paper, we present a division of focal plane (DoFP) polarimeter based polarization microscope which is capable of imaging both the Stokes vector and the 3x4 Mueller matrix. The Mueller matrix measurement can help us completely understand the polarization properties of the sample and the Stokes vector measurement is a simultaneous technology. First, we calibrate a DoFP polarimeter using the polarization data reduction method for accurate Stokes vector measurements. Second, as the Stokes vector computation for all pixels using the calibrated instrument matrix is usually time consuming, we develop a GPU acceleration algorithm for real time Stokes vector calculations. Third, based on the accurate and fast Stokes vector calculation, we present an optimal 4-states of polarization (4-SoP) illumination scheme for Mueller matrix measurement using the DoFP polarimeter. Finally, we demonstrate the biomedical applications of the DoFP polarimeter based polarization microscope. Experiment results show that the characteristic features of many biomedical samples can be observed in the "polarization staining" images using the circularly polarized light as illumination. In this way, combined with GPU acceleration algorithm, the DoFP polarization microscope has the capacity for real time polarization monitoring of dynamic processes in biological samples.

Abstract:A portable 4D snapshot hyperspectral imager (P4DS imager) with compact size, fast imaging time, low cost, and simple design is proposed and demonstrated. The key components of the system are a projector, a liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF), and a camera. It has two operating modes depending on the set state of the LCTF: a 3D light measurement mode that produces a 3D point cloud reconstruction of an object and a hyperspectral imaging mode yielding spectral data. The camera imaging plane is the same for both operating modes allowing the collected spatial and spectral data to be directly fused into a 4D data set without post-processing. The P4DS imager has excellent performance with a spectral resolution of 10 nm, a spatial depth accuracy of 55.7 mu m, and a total 4D imaging time of 0.8 s. 4D imaging experiments of three different samples, namely, a colored figurine, green broccoli, and a human face, are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the system. Due to being cost-effective, portable, and good imaging performance, the proposed system is suitable for commercialization and mass production.

Abstract:The widespread availability and diversity of open-source microcontrollers paired with off-the-shelf electronics and 3D printed technology has led to the creation of a wide range of low-cost scientific instruments, including microscopes, spectrometers, sensors, data loggers, and other tools that can be used for research, education, and experimentation. These devices can be used to explore a wide range of scientific topics, from biology and chemistry to physics and engineering. In this study, we designed and built a multifunction fluorescent open source in vivo/in vitro imaging system (openIVIS) system that integrates a Raspberry Pi with commercial cameras and LEDs with 3D printed structures combined with an acrylic housing. Our openIVIS provides three excitation wavelengths of 460 nm, 520 nm, and 630 nm integrated with Python control software to enable fluorescent measurements across the full visible light spectrum. To demonstrate the potential applications of our system, we tested its performance against a diverse set of experiments including laboratory assays (measuring fluorescent dyes, using optical nanosensors, and DNA gel electrophoresis) to potentially fieldable applications (plant and mineral imaging). We also tested the potential use for a high school biology environment by imaging small animals and tracking their development over the course of ten days. Our system demonstrated its ability to measure a wide dynamic range fluorescent response from millimolar to picomolar concentrations in the same sample while measuring responses across visible wavelengths. These results demonstrate the power and flexibility of open-source hardware and software and how it can be integrated with customizable manufacturing to create low-cost scientific instruments with a wide range of applications. Our study provides a promising model for the development of low-cost instruments that can be used in both research and education.

Abstract:Abstract The advent of easy-to-use open source microcontrollers, off-the-shelf electronics and customizable manufacturing technologies has facilitated the development of inexpensive scientific devices and laboratory equipment. In this study, we describe an imaging system that integrates low-cost and open-source hardware, software and genetic resources. The multi-fluorescence imaging system consists of readily available 470 nm LEDs, a Raspberry Pi camera and a set of filters made with low cost acrylics. This device allows imaging in scales ranging from single colonies to entire plates. We developed a set of genetic components (e.g. promoters, coding sequences, terminators) and vectors following the standard framework of Golden Gate, which allowed the fabrication of genetic constructs in a combinatorial, low cost and robust manner. In order to provide simultaneous imaging of multiple wavelength signals, we screened a series of long stokes shift fluorescent proteins that could be combined with cyan/green fluorescent proteins. We found CyOFP1, mBeRFP and sfGFP to be the most compatible set for 3-channel fluorescent imaging. We developed open source Python code to operate the hardware to run time-lapse experiments with automated control of illumination and camera and a Python module to analyze data and extract meaningful biological information. To demonstrate the potential application of this integral system, we tested its performance on a diverse range of imaging assays often used in disciplines such as microbial ecology, microbiology and synthetic biology. We also assessed its potential for STEM teaching in a high school environment, using it to teach biology, hardware design, optics, and programming. Together, these results demonstrate the successful integration of open source hardware, software, genetic resources and customizable manufacturing to obtain a powerful, low cost and robust system for STEM education, scientific research and bioengineering. All the resources developed here are available under open source licenses.
LightSpeed: A Compact, High-Speed Optical-Link-Based 3D Optoacoustic Imager

Abstract:Wide-scale adoption of optoacoustic imaging in biology and medicine critically depends on availability of affordable scanners combining ease of operation with optimal imaging performance. Here we introduce LightSpeed: a low-cost real-time volumetric handheld optoacoustic imager based on a new compact software-defined ultrasound digital acquisition platform and a pulsed laser diode. It supports the simultaneous signal acquisition from up to 192 ultrasound channels and provides a hig-bandwidth direct optical link (2x 100G Ethernet) to the host-PC for ultra-high frame rate image acquisitions. We demonstrate use of the system for ultrafast (500Hz) 3D human angiography with a rapidly moving handheld probe. LightSpeed attained image quality comparable with a conventional optoacoustic imaging systems employing bulky acquisition electronics and a Q-switched pulsed laser. Our results thus pave the way towards a new generation of compact, affordable and high-performance optoacoustic scanners.
Lensless polarimetric coded ptychography for high-resolution, high-throughput gigapixel birefringence imaging on a chip

Abstract:Polarimetric imaging provides valuable insights into the polarization state of light interacting with a sample. It can infer crucial birefringence properties of bio-specimens without using any labels, thereby facilitating the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer and osteoarthritis. In this study, we present a novel polarimetric coded ptychography (pol-CP) approach that enables high-resolution, high-throughput gigapixel birefringence imaging on a chip. Our platform deviates from traditional lens-based polarization systems by employing an integrated polarimetric coded sensor for lensless coherent diffraction imaging. Utilizing Jones calculus, we quantitatively determine the birefringence retardance and orientation information of bio-specimens from the recovered images. Our portable pol-CP prototype can resolve the 435-nm linewidth on the resolution target and the imaging field of view for a single acquisition is limited only by the detector size of 41^2. The prototype allows for the acquisition of gigapixel birefringence images with a 180-mm^2 field of view in ~3.5 minutes, a performance that rivals high-end whole slide scanner but a small fraction of the cost. To demonstrate its biomedical applications, we perform high-throughput imaging of malaria-infected blood smears, locating parasites using birefringence contrast. We also generate birefringence maps of label-free thyroid smears to identify thyroid follicles. Notably, the recovered birefringence maps emphasize the same regions as autofluorescence images, underscoring the potential for rapid on-site evaluation of label-free biopsies. Our approach provides a turnkey and portable solution for lensless polarimetric analysis on a chip, with promising applications in disease diagnosis, crystal screening, and label-free chemical imaging, particularly in resource-constrained environments.

Monocular 3D Probe Tracking for Generating Sub-Surface Optical Property Maps From Diffuse Optical Spectroscopic Imaging

Abstract:Objective: Diffuse optical spectroscopic imaging (DOSI) is a promising biophotonic technology for clinical tissue assessment, but is currently hampered by difficult wide area assessment. A co-integrative optical imaging system is proposed for dense sub-surface optical property spatial assessment. Methods: The proposed system fuses a co-aligned set of camera frames and diffuse optical spectroscopy measurements to generate spatial sub-surface optical property maps. A 3D rigid body motion estimation model was developed by fitting automatically detected target features to an a priori geometric model using a single overhead camera. Point-wise optical properties were measured across the tissue using frequency domain photon migration DOSI. The 3D probe trajectory and temporal optical property data were fused to generate 2D spatial optical property maps, which were projected onto the tissue image using pre-calibrated camera parameters. Results: The system demonstrated sub-millimeter positional accuracy (error 0.24 ± 0.35 mm) across different probe speeds (1.0-3.8 cm/s), and displacement accuracy in overhead ([Formula: see text] mm) and tilted (0.51 ± 0.51 mm) camera orientations. Unstructured scans on a tumor inclusion phantom showed strong contrast under different probe paths, and significant ( ) changes in optical properties in an in vivo leg cuff occlusion protocol with spatial anatomy localization. Conclusion: The proposed co-integrative optical imaging system generated dense sub-surface optical property distributions across wide tissue areas with sub-millimeter accuracy at different probe speeds and trajectories, and does not require pre-planned probe route for tissue assessment. Significance: This system provides a valuable tool for real-time non-invasive tissue health and cancer screening, and enables longitudinal disease progression assessment through unstructured probe-based optical tissue assessment.

Abstract:Integrating micro- and nanolasers into live cells, tissue cultures and small animals is an emerging and rapidly evolving technique that offers noninvasive interrogation and labeling with unprecedented information density. The bright and distinct spectra of such lasers make this approach particularly attractive for high-throughput applications requiring single-cell specificity, such as multiplexed cell tracking and intracellular biosensing. The implementation of these applications requires high-resolution, high-speed spectral readout and advanced analysis routines, which leads to unique technical challenges. Here, we present a modular approach consisting of two separate procedures. The first procedure instructs users on how to efficiently integrate different types of lasers into living cells, and the second procedure presents a workflow for obtaining intracellular lasing spectra with high spectral resolution and up to 125-kHz readout rate and starts from the construction of a custom hyperspectral confocal microscope. We provide guidance on running hyperspectral imaging routines for various experimental designs and recommend specific workflows for processing the resulting large data sets along with an open-source Python library of functions covering the analysis pipeline. We illustrate three applications including the rapid, large-volume mapping of absolute refractive index by using polystyrene microbead lasers, the intracellular sensing of cardiac contractility with polystyrene microbead lasers and long-term cell tracking by using semiconductor nanodisk lasers. Our sample preparation and imaging procedures require 2 days, and setting up the hyperspectral confocal microscope for microlaser characterization requires <2 weeks to complete for users with limited experience in optical and software engineering.

Abstract:Recent advances in light‐based technologies combined with increasing demand for early diagnostics and improvements in patient care are the major drivers in the expansion of the global biophotonics market with an estimated value reaching $91.3 billion by 2024. To address the growing need for interdisciplinary scientists, clinicians, and engineers, this study presents a structured approach to educational and outreach activities in biophotonics applied over two consecutive years aiming at improving the workshop design based on students' and teachers' feedback. As a rapidly growing field, biophotonics demonstrates an increasingly higher demand for interdisciplinary professionals and requires the implementation of a structured approach to educational and outreach activities focused on appropriate curriculum, and teaching and learning for audiences with diverse technical backgrounds and learning styles. Our study shows the main findings upon applying this approach to biophotonics workshops delivered 2 consecutive years while updating and improving learning outcomes, teaching strategies, workshop content based on student and teacher feedback. We provided resources for a variety of lecture‐based, experimental, computer simulation activities. Quality of subject matter, teaching, and overall learning was rated as "Very good" or "Good" by 88%, 76%, and 82% of students in average, respectively. Application of our teaching strategies and materials during short‐ and long‐term workshops/courses could potentially increase the interest in pursuing careers in the biophotonics field and related areas, leading to standardized approaches in designing education and outreach events across centers.

Abstract:THE immune response to burns is a very complex phenomenon. It is influenced by a series of factors such as the extent and severity of burn, depth, age, presence or absence of infection, type of treatment, etc. The normal response is reflected by the level of the gammaglobulin, or strictly speaking by the levels of the immunoglobulins present in the serum of patients with burns. This applies to humoral immunity: we do not know much about the cellular type of immunity. There are also quite marked individual differences in the response. In uncomplicated cases the initial response to thermal injury is a drop of the gammaglobulin which as a rule depends on the severity and the depth of the burn. All immunoglobulins show an initial fall, the lowest level being reached within about 48 hr after the burn. This is consistent with and parallel to the fall in the total protein values. The deeper the burn and the greater the area affected, the more pronounced the decrease of the gammaglobulins. The fall of the gammaglobulins lasts sometimes a few days and only slowly starts rising again within the next week or so. The further behaviour ofthe gammaglobulins and the values of the individual immunoglobulins will vary according to the case and whether or not infection becomes established. Changes of concentration result from interplay of synthesis, catabolism, leakage and redistribution between the burned area and intravascular space (Arturson, 1971). The immunoglobulin which is affected most is the IgG, the levels of which may fall well below 100 mg/100 ml or about 10% of the normal values. In some very severe burns, all of them with fatal outcome, the IgG fall was very profound indeed, between 60 and 140 mg/100 ml (Kohn & Cort, 1969). The low IgG level may persist for quite a long while. It may sometimes take a month or more before it starts rising and it may be 6 weeks before it reaches the preburn values. It is very difficult to correct this deficiency and even administration of relatively large volumes of plasma or gammaglobulin will not raise the IgG values to anywhere near normal levels. In the later stages there is sometimes quite a dramatic rise probably due to infection and figures well above average and above the pre-burn values are reached. In children the situation is similar as far as IgG is concerned, but there seems to be a more rapid return to normal. There are less dramatic rises of the IgG, but the initial fall in the first few days occurs and depends on the extent and severity of the burn. The IgA usually shows an initial drop and in many cases there is a consistent rise over a matter of weeks to levels 200-300% above the base-level values obtained from blood samples taken as soon after the burn as possible, within a matter of the first few hours. This increase of the IgA values seems to be accentuated with age; in very small children it is not as marked. IgM values show relatively little variation; the initial drop is not pronounced probably because the IgM is an intravascular immunoglobulin, which does not migrate freely through the vascular wall. Considerable rises, however, can be observed in infection, particularly of the Gram-negative type, possibly due to endotoxin response. The greater fall of the IgG compared with that of the IgA and particularly the IgM, has been confirmed by the studies of the immunoglobulin levels in blister fluid which showed that the serum : blister fluid ratio is about 1.2-1 4 : 1 for IgG as against 3-4 1: for the IgA (Kohn & Cort, 1969). The IgD levels show the greatest individual variations but an initial fall usually occurs and the levels of IgD return to normal in severe burns within 1 month. Usually there is a decrease of the IgE in the early stages, but in some cases a very marked increase of IgE was noted, up to tenfold of the original level. As an increase of IgE in the blister fluid was observed as well, local production of IgE in burns cannot be ruled out. Formation of bacterial antibodies follows the colonization of the burned surface by various types of bacteria and subsequent infection of the burned skin, possibly involving the deeper layers. Bacterial antibodies can be found within approximately 2 weeks from the time of burn. The time when the first traces of bacterial antibodies appear will of course depend on a sufficient load of micro-organisms to provide an adequate antigenic stimulus. A considerable number and variety of bacterial antibodies have been demonstrated in burns. All types of antibodies coright.

Abstract:Photon counting X-ray imagers have found their way into the mainstream scientific community in recent years, and have become important components in many scientific setups. These camera systems are in active development, with output data rates increasing significantly with every new generation of devices. A different class of PCD (Photon Counting Detector) devices has become generally available, where camera data output is no longer a matrix of photon counts but instead direct measurements of the deposited charge per pixel in every frame, which requires significant off-camera processing. This type of PCD, called a hyperspectral X-ray camera due to its fully spectroscopic output, yet again increases the demands put on the acquisition and processing backend. Not only are bandwidth requirements increased, but the need to do extensive data processing is also introduced with these hyperspectral PCD devices. To cope with these new developments the Spectral X-ray Imaging Data Acquisition framework (SpeXIDAQ) has been developed. All aspects of the imaging pipeline are handled by the SpeXIDAQ framework: from detector control and frame grabbing, to processing, storage and live visualisation during experiments.

Abstract:Capabilities in real-time monitoring of internal physiological processes could inform pharmacological drug-delivery schedules, surgical intervention procedures and the management of recovery and rehabilitation. Current methods rely on external imaging techniques or implantable sensors, without the ability to provide continuous information over clinically relevant timescales, and/or with requirements in surgical procedures with associated costs and risks. Here, we describe injectable classes of photonic devices, made entirely of materials that naturally resorb and undergo clearance from the body after a controlled operational lifetime, for the spectroscopic characterization of targeted tissues and biofluids. As an example application, we show that the devices can be used for the continuous monitoring of cerebral temperature, oxygenation and neural activity in freely moving mice. These types of devices should prove useful in fundamental studies of disease pathology, in neuroscience research, in surgical procedures and in monitoring of recovery from injury or illness.
