Abstract:AbstractPropyne/propylene (C3H4/C3H6) separation is an important but challenging industrial process to produce polymer‐grade C3H6and recover high‐purity C3H4. Herein, we report an ultrastable TiF62−anion cross‐linked metal–organic framework (ZNU‐2) with precisely controlled pore size, shape and functionality for benchmark C3H4storage (3.9/7.7 mmol g−1at 0.01/1.0 bar and 298 K) and record high C3H4/C3H6(10/90) separation potential (31.0 mol kg−1). The remarkable C3H4/C3H6(1/99, 10/90, 50/50) separation performance was fully demonstrated by simulated and experimental breakthroughs under various conditions with excellent recyclability and high productivity (42 mol kg−1) of polymer‐grade C3H6from a 1/99 C3H4/C3H6mixture. A modelling study revealed that the symmetrical spatial distribution of six TiF62−on the icosahedral cage surface provides two distinct binding sites for C3H4adsorption: one serves as a tailored single C3H4molecule trap and the other boosts C3H4accommodation by cooperative host–guest and guest–guest interactions.

Abstract:Developing cost-/energy-efficient separation techniques for purifying ethylene from an ethylene/ethane mixture is highly important but very challenging in the industrial process. Herein, using a bottom-up [8 + 2] construction approach, we rationally designed and synthesized three three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with 8-connected bcu networks, which can selectively remove ethane from an ethylene/ethane mixture with high efficiency. These COF materials, which are fabricated by the condensation reaction of a customer-designed octatopic aldehyde monomer with linear diamino linkers, possess high crystallinity, good structural robustness, and high porosity. Attributed to the well-organized micro-sized pores with a nonpolar/inert pore environment, these COFs display high ethane adsorption capacity and good selectivity over ethylene, making them among the best ethane-selective adsorbents for ethylene purification. Their excellent ethylene/ethane separation performance is validated by dynamic breakthrough experiments with high-purity ethylene (>99.99%) produced through a single adsorption process. The separation performance surpasses all reported C2H6-selective COFs and even some benchmark metal-organic frameworks. This work provides important guidance for the design of new adsorbents for value-added gas purification.

Abstract:Separation of propylene/propane is a critical process in the petrochemical industry, and rational design of porous adsorbents is essential for efficient separation techniques. Designing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with supramolecular motifs could access novel structures with finely tuned pore size and shapes, opening up new possibilities for enhancing separation performance. Here we report the design and synthesis of three MOF structures, namely BIT-23, 24, and 25, based on a Y-shaped flexible ligand with transition metal nodes (Ni, Zn, or Cu), featuring macrocycle and helical chain motifs. Originating from the flexibility of the ligand and varying geometry of the metal nodes, the formed macrocycle or helical chain units present different conformations, leading to MOFs with distinct topologies and channels. Notably, BIT-23, possessing 1D channels with periodically wide cavity and narrow bottleneck structure and optimal pore size, could separate propylene/propane, as verified by dynamic breakthrough experiments. The kinetic separation mechanism was further validated by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers in which organic building blocks are covalently and topologically linked to form extended crystalline polygon structures, constituting a new platform for designing π-electronic porous materials. However, COFs are currently synthesised by a few chemical reactions, limiting the access to and exploration of new structures and properties. The development of new reaction systems that avoid such limitations to expand structural diversity is highly desired. Here we report that COFs can be synthesised via a double-stage connection that polymerises various different building blocks into crystalline polygon architectures, leading to the development of a new type of COFs with enhanced structural complexity and diversity. We show that the double-stage approach not only controls the sequence of building blocks but also allows fine engineering of pore size and shape. This strategy is widely applicable to different polymerisation systems to yield hexagonal, tetragonal and rhombus COFs with predesigned pores and π-arrays.

Abstract:Purifying ultra‐high purity propylene (>99.995%) with an energy‐efficient adsorptive separation method is a promising yet challenging technology that remains unfulfilled. Instead of solely considering the effect of adsorbents on guest molecules, we propose a synergistic adsorption mechanism for the deep removal of propane and propyne, utilizing supramolecular interactions in both "host‐guest" and "guest‐guest" systems. Through modulation of the pore environment, Ni‐DMOF‐DM exhibits exceptionally high adsorption capacities for propane and propyne (171 and 197 cm3/g at ambient temperature and pressure, respectively), and unprecedented propane/propylene separation selectivity (2.74). Theoretical calculations confirm the geometric interactions of C‐H···π bonds and C‐H···O hydrogen bonds resulting from host‐guest interactions, alongside C‐H···H guest‐guest interactions within the confined pore space. Abstract:The removal of trace amounts of propyne from propylene is critical for the production of polymer grade propylene. We herein report the first example of metal organic frameworks of flexible robust nature for the efficient separation of propyne/propylene mixtures. The strong binding affinity and suitable pore confinement for propyne account for its high uptake capacity and selectivity, as evidenced by neutron powder diffraction studies and density functional theory calculations. The purity of the obtained propylene is over 99.9998%, as demonstrated by experimental breakthrough curves for a 1/99 propyne/propylene mixture.

Abstract:Energy-efficient membrane technology is sought to replace or integrate with conventional energy- and cost-intensive distillation for precise propylene/propane separation. Covalent organic framework (COF)-based composite membranes (CMs) are promising candidates for the representative difficult propylene/propane separation system. However, the large-size pore of COFs cannot achieve an effective separation of gas pairs with sub-angstrom (0.2 Å) size differences. Here, we design confined facilitated transport nanochannels within COFs as productive fillers to construct CMs. The anchored high-density Ag+ carriers facilitate C3H6 monomolecular high-speed transport along the nanochannel surface. Under this confined transport mechanism, the problem of over-sized COF pores can be partially circumvented, and high selectivity obtained. Moreover, the obtained asymmetric configuration of SCOF-Ag/PI CMs results in directional gas transport. As the first work of COF-based membranes for olefin/paraffin separation, SCOF-Ag/PI CMs demonstrate a high propylene permeability of 75.16 barrer and good propylene/propane selectivity of 35.45, out-performing most of the polymer-based membranes and approaching the performance of ZIF-8 membranes. Furthermore, SCOF-Ag/PI CMs exhibit over one-month durability. The excellent separation performance combined with operating stability provides a promising alternative approach toward efficient C3H6/C3H8 separation.

Abstract:Adsorptive separation of propyne/propylene (C3H4/C3H6) is a crucial yet complex process, however, it remains a great difficulty in developing porous materials that can meet the requirements for practical applications, particularly with an exceptional ability to bind and store trace amounts of C3H4. Functionalization of pore-partitioned metal-organic frameworks (ppMOFs) is methodically suited for this challenge owing to the possibility of dramatically increasing binding sites on highly porous and confined domains. We here immobilized Lewis-basic (-NH2) and Lewis-acidic (-NO2) sites on this platform. Along with an integrated nature of high uptake of C3H4 at 1 kPa, high uptake difference of C3H4-C3H6, moderated binding strength, promoted kinetic selectivity, trapping effect and high stability, the NH2-decorated ppMOF (NTU-100-NH2) can efficiently produce polymer-grade C3H6 (99.95%, 8.3 mmol·g-1) at room temperature, which is six times more than the NO2-decorated crystal (NTU-100-NO2). The in-situ infrared spectroscopy, crystallographic analysis, and sequential blowing tests showed that the densely packed amino group in this highly porous system has a unique ability to recognize and stabilize C3H4 molecules. Moving forward, the strategy of organic functionalization can be extended to other porous systems, making it a powerful tool to customize advanced materials for challenging tasks.

Abstract:The construction of functional three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) for gas separation, specifically for the efficient removal of ethane (C 2 H 6 ) from ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), is significant but challenging due to their similar physicochemical properties. In this study, we demonstrate fine-tuning the pore environment of ultramicroporous 3D COFs to achieve efficient one-step C 2 H 4 purification. By choosing our previously reported 3D-TPB-COF-H as a reference material, we rationally design and synthesize an isostructural 3D COF (3D-TPP-COF) containing pyridine units. Impressively, compared with 3D-TPB-COF-H, 3D-TPP-COF exhibits both high C 2 H 6 adsorption capacity (110.4 cm 3 g −1 at 293 K and 1 bar) and good C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity (1.8), due to the formation of additional C-H···N interactions between pyridine groups and C 2 H 6 . To our knowledge, this performance surpasses all other reported COFs and is even comparable to some benchmark porous materials. In addition, dynamic breakthrough experiments reveal that 3D-TPP-COF can be used as a robust absorbent to produce high-purity C 2 H 4 directly from a C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 mixture. This study provides important guidance for the rational design of 3D COFs for efficient gas separation.

Abstract:AbstractIndustrial purification of propylene and ethylene requires cryogenic distillation and selective hydrogenation over palladium catalysts to remove propane, ethane and/or trace amounts of acetylene. Here, we report the excellent separation of equimolar mixtures of propylene/propane and ethylene/ethane, and of a 1/100 mixture of acetylene/ethylene by a highly robust microporous material, MFM‐520, under dynamic conditions. In situ synchrotron single crystal X‐ray diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and analysis of adsorption thermodynamic parameters reveal that a series of synergistic host–guest interactions involving hydrogen bonding and π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions underpin the cooperative binding of alkenes within the pore. Notably, the optimal pore geometry of the material enables selective accommodation of acetylene. The practical potential of this porous material has been demonstrated by fabricating mixed‐matrix membranes comprising MFM‐520, Matrimid and PIM‐1, and these exhibit not only a high permeability for propylene (≈1984 Barrer), but also a separation factor of 7.8 for an equimolar mixture of propylene/propane at 298 K.
Modulated synthesis of stoichiometric and sub-stoichiometric two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks for enhanced ethylene purification

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs), including stoichiometric and sub-stoichiometric variations, is a topic of growing interest due to its potential in gas separation applications. In this study, we successfully synthesized three distinct 2D COFs by carefully adjusting solvent compositions and monomer ratios during the synthesis of [4 + 4] type COFs. These included a stoichiometric [4 + 4] type COF and two sub-stoichiometric [4 + 2] type COFs, featuring unreacted amino or formyl groups. The resulting COFs exhibit different gas adsorption and separation properties. Specifically, sub-stoichiometric COF-DA with residual amino groups shows comparable adsorption capacity for C2H2, C2H4, and CO2 to stoichiometric COF-DAPy. In contrast, sub-stoichiometric COF-Py with residual formyl groups displays enhanced adsorption selectivity for C2H2/C2H4 and C2H2/CO2 separation, with the C2H2/C2H4 selectivity being the highest among reported COFs, attributed to increased pore polarity resulting from the presence of formyl groups. This study not only offers an additional example of sub-stoichiometric COF synthesis but also advocates for further exploration of sub-stoichiometric COF materials, particularly in the field of gas adsorption and separation.

Abstract:The separation of propylene (C3H6) and propane (C3H8) is of great significance in the chemical industry, which poses a challenge due to their almost identical kinetic diameters and similar physical properties. In this work, we synthesized an ultramicroporous flexible hydrogen-bonded organic framework (named HOF-FJU-106) by using molecule 2,3,6,7-tetra(4-cyanophenyl)tetrathiafulvalene (TTF-4CN). The formation of the dimer causes the TTF-4CN molecular to bend and weaken π-stacked interactions, coupled with the flexibility of C≡N···H–C hydrogen bonds, which leads to reversible conversion between open and closed frameworks through the mutual slip of adjacent layers/columns under activation and stimulation of gas molecules. Through gas adsorption isotherms and adsorption enthalpy, HOF-FJU-106a exhibited adaptive adsorption and stronger binding affinity for C3H6, and presented a recorded gas uptake ratio of C3H6/C3H8 (23.77) among presentative HOF materials at room temperature to date. Importantly, the flexible HOF-FJU-106a shows an interesting phenomenon about the reversible gate pressure control under variable temperature, which realized the gas adsorption and separation performance enhancement for the binary C3H6/C3H8 mixtures. This strategy through designing HOFs with thermoregulatory gating effect is a powerful way to maximize the performance of materials.

Abstract:Efficient removal of propyne impurities from propylene is essential for producing high‐purity propylene. In this study, we utilize the flexible metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) material, MOF‐508, for C3H4/C3H6 separation. Propyne (C3H4) induces a "gate‐opening" effect in MOF‐508, transitioning it from a narrow‐pore (NP) phase to a large‐pore phase at low pressure. In contrast, propylene (C3H6) only triggers this effect at a higher pressure of 0.55 bar. Notably, at 298 K and 0.5 bar, MOF‐508 adsorbs 71.9 cm3/g of C3H4, compared to just 7.9 cm3/g of C3H6. This selective adsorption significantly enhances C3H4/C3H6 separation (50/50, v/v), as further demonstrated by dynamic breakthrough experiments.

Abstract:Adsorptive separation of propylene/propane (C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 ) mixture is highly desired for its potential energy saving on replacing currently deployed and energy-intensive cryogenic distillation technique. Realizing efficient C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation in the emerging hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) is very challenging and has been rarely reported due to the lack of functional sites for preferential gas binding. By virtue of crystal engineering, we herein report a rare example of functionalized HOF (termed as HOF-16 ) with free ‒COOH sites for the efficient separation of C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 mixtures. Under ambient conditions, HOF-16 shows a significant C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 uptake difference (by 76%) and selectivity (5.4) in contrast to those of other carboxylic acid-based HOFs. Modeling studies indicate that free ‒COOH groups together with the suitable pore confinement facilitate the recognition and high-density packing of gas molecules. The separation performance of HOF-16 has also been validated by breakthrough experiments. HOF-16 is stable in harsh condition including strong acidity and water.

Amine-functionalized ultramicroporous metal-organic framework for efficient propylene/propane separation

Abstract:The separation of propylene/propane (C3H6/C3H8) through an energy-efficient way is a crucial task in the petrochemical industry. However, it remains highly challenging because of their striking similarities between C3H6 and C3H8. Here we report an amine-Functionalized ultramicroporous metal-organic framework (MOF) Zn2(atz)2(ipa) with pH stability. In addition, Zn2(atz)2(ipa) possesses ability to absorb a large number of C3H6 at low pressure. The experience has shown that the high C3H6/C3H8 separation efficiency contributes to its suitable pore shape as well as firm bonding force with exposed –NH2 groups in the pore aperture. The strong affinity towards C3H6 and weak affinity towards C3H8 lead Zn2(atz)2(ipa) to high selectivity under ambient conditions. This work renders a fresh solution to product polymer-grade C3H6 through physical adsorption by MOFs.
