Abstract:AbstractPropyne/propylene (C3H4/C3H6) separation is an important but challenging industrial process to produce polymer‐grade C3H6and recover high‐purity C3H4. Herein, we report an ultrastable TiF62−anion cross‐linked metal–organic framework (ZNU‐2) with precisely controlled pore size, shape and functionality for benchmark C3H4storage (3.9/7.7 mmol g−1at 0.01/1.0 bar and 298 K) and record high C3H4/C3H6(10/90) separation potential (31.0 mol kg−1). The remarkable C3H4/C3H6(1/99, 10/90, 50/50) separation performance was fully demonstrated by simulated and experimental breakthroughs under various conditions with excellent recyclability and high productivity (42 mol kg−1) of polymer‐grade C3H6from a 1/99 C3H4/C3H6mixture. A modelling study revealed that the symmetrical spatial distribution of six TiF62−on the icosahedral cage surface provides two distinct binding sites for C3H4adsorption: one serves as a tailored single C3H4molecule trap and the other boosts C3H4accommodation by cooperative host–guest and guest–guest interactions.
Effect of Framework Rigidity in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Adsorptive Separation of Ethane/ethylene

Abstract:Ethane-selective adsorbents having high adsorption capacities along with high selectivity toward C2H6 are required to develop a cost-effective adsorption process for the facile separation of ethane (C2H6) from the ethane and ethylene (C2H4) mixture. Understanding the roles of physicochemical properties of the C2H6 -selective adsorbent in terms of its C2H6/C2H4 separation performance is especially essential for the design of novel advanced materials. Herein, we selected the known metal-organic framework structure, namely, the pillared three-dimensional framework DUT-8, which is synthesized by incorporation of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid as a linker. We compared physicochemical properties of DUT-8 according to the framework flexibility and the type of metal ion. Even though the framework stability of DUT-8 is very low in the presence of water vapor, we further evaluated the C2H6/C2H4 separation performance of isomorphous DUT-8(M) adsorbents with different metal ions (M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) by means of single-gas isotherm measurements, ideal adsorbed solution theory calculations, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, and density functional theory calculations. Separation results showed that preferential uptakes of C2H6 were observed from the C2H6/C2H4 mixture particularly over the rigid framework of DUT-8 (Cu and Ni) through the C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interaction close to the metal node. Thus, high selectivity of C2H6 was achieved over DUT-8(Cu and Ni) along with high uptakes of C2H6 (up to 11.2 mmol/g) at a temperature range of 283-303 K and pressure of 10 bar. The breakthrough separation results on DUT-8 (Cu) showed that the binary mixture of C2H6/C2H4 (1 : 9 v/v) can be effectively separated at pressures of 1 and 5 bar with high productivity of high purity ethylene (20.8 L/kg at 1 bar and 45.0 L/kg at 5 bar). The facile regeneration possibility over DUT-8 is confirmed by the dynamic desorption studies, expecting continuous production of high purity ethylene.
Efficient Separation of Propene and Propane Using Anion-Pillared Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Propylene/propane (C3H6/C3H8) separation is a momentous and challenging process for the production of polymer-grade C3H6 with high energy penalty. Here, we report the separation of C3H6 and C3H8 with two isostructural anion-pillared metal-organic frameworks [GeFSIX-2-Cu-i (also termed as ZU-32) and SIFSIX-2-Cu-i]. Interestingly, GeFSIX-2-Cu-i shows a high uptake ratio of C3H6/C3H8 (1.49 at 298 K and 1.0 bar), outperforming most of the existing materials, such as MOF-74 series (1.16-1.31), MAF-23-O (1.17), and CuBTC (1.12). Furthermore, the breakthrough experiments for C3H6/C3H8 (50/50, v/v) binary mixtures were performed on GeFSIX-2-Cu-i and SIFSIX-2-Cu-i, respectively. Under dynamic conditions, both GeFSIX-2-Cu-i and SIFSIX-2-Cu-i present excellent separation performance, especially for GeFSIX-2-Cu-i with a C3H6 capacity of 2.2 mmol g(-1) (calculated from breakthrough curves). The binding sites of GeFSIX-2-Cu-i for C3H6 and C3H8 were investigated by the first-principles density functional theory calculations, and the results reveal that the strong hydrogen-bonding interactions between GeF62- anions and C3H6 as well as pi - pi interactions between organic linkers and C3H6 lead to high C3H6 uptake on GeFSIX-2-Cu-i. This work indicates that the anion-pillared metal organic frameworks, with high hydrothermal stability, can be considered as candidates for the separation of C3H6/C3H8 mixtures.

Abstract:Efficient removal of propyne impurities from propylene is essential for producing high‐purity propylene. In this study, we utilize the flexible metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) material, MOF‐508, for C3H4/C3H6 separation. Propyne (C3H4) induces a "gate‐opening" effect in MOF‐508, transitioning it from a narrow‐pore (NP) phase to a large‐pore phase at low pressure. In contrast, propylene (C3H6) only triggers this effect at a higher pressure of 0.55 bar. Notably, at 298 K and 0.5 bar, MOF‐508 adsorbs 71.9 cm3/g of C3H4, compared to just 7.9 cm3/g of C3H6. This selective adsorption significantly enhances C3H4/C3H6 separation (50/50, v/v), as further demonstrated by dynamic breakthrough experiments.

Abstract:A thermostable anion-pillared metal-organic framework TIFSIX-2-Ni-i (also referred to as ZU-12-Ni, TIFSIX = hexafluorotitanate, 2 = 4,4'-bipyridylacetylene, i = interpenetrated) has been synthesized for the first time. Structural characterizations show that TIFSIX-2-Ni-i exhibits a 2-fold interpenetrated network with narrow aperture of 5.1 angstrom (H-H distance) and abundant inorganic anion sites in the channel. The subtle change in metal and inorganic linkers results in the enhancement of the thermal stability of TIFSIX-2-Ni-i. Importantly, TIFSIX-2-Ni-i shows high-performing separation properties, especially for the important separations of C2H2/C2H4 and C2H2/CO2 mixtures. Adsorption data demonstrate that TIFSIX-2-Ni-i enables effective C2H2 capture (4.21 mmol/g, at 298 K and 1 bar), and achieves highly selective separation of C2H2 over C2H4 or CO2 with the IAST selectivity of 22.7 (C2H2/C2H4: 1/99) and 10.0 (C2H2/CO2: 2/1) at 298 K and 1 bar. Dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) calculations confirm the preferential adsorption of C2H2 over C2H4 and CO2. Furthermore, the potential of industrial feasibility of TIFSIX-2-Ni-i for C2H2/C2H4 separation is confirmed by transient breakthrough tests (611.4 mmol/L C2H2 absorbed for mixtures containing 1% C2H2). The excellent cycle performance and stable structure of TIFSIX-2-Ni-i during multiple breakthrough tests show great potential in industrial separation of light hydrocarbons.

Abstract:The removal of trace amounts of propyne from propylene is critical for the production of polymer grade propylene. We herein report the first example of metal organic frameworks of flexible robust nature for the efficient separation of propyne/propylene mixtures. The strong binding affinity and suitable pore confinement for propyne account for its high uptake capacity and selectivity, as evidenced by neutron powder diffraction studies and density functional theory calculations. The purity of the obtained propylene is over 99.9998%, as demonstrated by experimental breakthrough curves for a 1/99 propyne/propylene mixture.

Abstract:The separation of propylene (C3H6) and propane (C3H8) is of great significance in the chemical industry, which poses a challenge due to their almost identical kinetic diameters and similar physical properties. In this work, we synthesized an ultramicroporous flexible hydrogen-bonded organic framework (named HOF-FJU-106) by using molecule 2,3,6,7-tetra(4-cyanophenyl)tetrathiafulvalene (TTF-4CN). The formation of the dimer causes the TTF-4CN molecular to bend and weaken π-stacked interactions, coupled with the flexibility of C≡N···H–C hydrogen bonds, which leads to reversible conversion between open and closed frameworks through the mutual slip of adjacent layers/columns under activation and stimulation of gas molecules. Through gas adsorption isotherms and adsorption enthalpy, HOF-FJU-106a exhibited adaptive adsorption and stronger binding affinity for C3H6, and presented a recorded gas uptake ratio of C3H6/C3H8 (23.77) among presentative HOF materials at room temperature to date. Importantly, the flexible HOF-FJU-106a shows an interesting phenomenon about the reversible gate pressure control under variable temperature, which realized the gas adsorption and separation performance enhancement for the binary C3H6/C3H8 mixtures. This strategy through designing HOFs with thermoregulatory gating effect is a powerful way to maximize the performance of materials.

Abstract:A flexible metal-organic framework, {[Cu-2(TPPB)(2)](DMF)(8)}(n) (1, H2TPPB = 4,4'-((5-(4-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)phenoxy)-1,3-phenylene)bis(oxy))dibenzoic acid, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), with a doubly interpenetrated network was solvothermally prepared by employing a flexible bifunctional triazolcarboxylate ligand. This MOF shows a dynamic structure with its network displaying different configurations by accommodating different solvents. More importantly, due to the synergistic effect of its suitable pore size and flexible structural feature, its activated phase demonstrates a significant C2H2 uptake capacity with stepwise and hysteretic sorption behavior, but only limited C2H4 is absorbed; this enables the discriminatory adsorption of C2H2 over C2H4. The separation potential of this flexible MOF towards C2H2/C2H4 is further established using IAST calculations of mixture adsorption equilibrium.

Abstract:AbstractSeparation of propyne/propylene (C3H4/C3H6) is more difficult and challenging than that of acetylene/ethylene (C2H2/C2H4) because of their closer molecular sizes. A comprehensive screening of a series of metal–organic frameworks with broad types of structures, pore sizes, and functionalities was carried out. UTSA‐200 was identified as the best separating material for the removal of trace C3H4 from C3H4/C3H6 mixtures. Gas sorption isotherms reveal that UTSA‐200 exhibits by far the highest C3H4 adsorption capacity (95 cm3 cm−3 at 0.01 bar and 298 K) and record C3H4/C3H6 selectivity, which was mainly attributed to the suitable dynamic pore size to efficiently block the larger C3H6 molecule whilst the strong binding sites and pore flexibility capture smaller C3H4. This material thus provides record purification capacity for the removal of C3H4 from a 1:99 (or 0.1:99.9, v/v) C3H4/C3H6 mixture to produce 99.9999 % pure C3H6 with a productivity of 62.0 (or 142.8) mmol g−1.

Abstract:Highly selective adsorptive separation of olefin/paraffin through porous materials can produce high purity olefins in a much more energy-efficient way than the traditional cryogenic distillation. Here we report an ultramicroporous cobalt gallate metal-organic framework (Co-gallate) for the highly selective sieving separation of propylene/propane at ambient conditions. This material possesses optimal pore structure for the exact confinement of propylene molecules while excluding the slightly large propane molecules, as clearly demonstrated in the neutron diffraction crystal structure of Co-gallate⊃0.38C3D6. Its high separation performance has been confirmed by the gas sorption isotherms and column breakthrough experiments to produce the high purity of propylene (97.7%) with a high dynamic separation productivity of 36.4 cm3 cm-3 under ambient conditions. The gas adsorption measurement, pore size distribution, and crystallographic and modeling studies comprehensively support the high sieving C3H6/C3H8 separation in this MOF material. It is stable under different environments, providing its potential for the industrial propylene purification.

Abstract:The development of porous solids for adsorptive separation of propylene and propane remains an important and challenging line of research. State-of-the-art sorbent materials often suffer from the trade-off between adsorption capacity and selectivity. Here, we report the regulated separation of propylene and propane in a metal-organic framework via designed pore distortion. The distorted pore structure of HIAM-301 successfully excludes propane and thus achieved simultaneously high selectivity (>150) and large capacity (∼3.2 mmol/g) of propylene at 298 K and 1 bar. Dynamic breakthrough measurements validated the excellent separation of propane and propylene. In situ neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering revealed the binding domains of adsorbed propylene molecules in HIAM-301 as well as host-guest interaction dynamics. This study presents a new benchmark for the adsorptive separation of propylene and propane.

Abstract:The separation of propylene and propane is an important but challenging process, primarily achieved through energy-intensive distillation technology in the petrochemical industry. Here, we reported two natural C4 linkers based metal–organic frameworks (MIP-202 and MIP-203) for C3H6/C3H8 separation. Adsorption isotherms and selectivity calculations were performed to study the adsorption performance for C3H6/C3H8 separation. Results show that C3H6/C3H8 uptake ratios (298 K, 100 kPa) for MIP-202 and MIP-203 are 2.34 and 7.4, respectively. C3H6/C3H8 uptake ratio (303 K, 100 kPa) for MIP-203 is up to 50.0. The mechanism for enhanced separation performance of C3H6/C3H8 on MIP-203 at higher temperature (303 K) was revealed by the in situ PXRD characterization. The adsorption selectivities of C3H6/C3H8 on MIP-202 and MIP-203 (298 K, 100 kPa) are 8.8 and 551.4, respectively. The mechanism for the preferential adsorption of C3H6 over C3H8 in MIP-202 and MIP-203 was revealed by the Monte Carlo simulation. The cost of organic ligands for MIP-202 and MIP-203 was lower than that of organic ligands for those top-performance MOFs. Our work sets a new benchmark for C3H6 sorbents with high adsorption selectivities.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional microporous metal-organic framework, Cu-2(OFDI) (ZJU-61, H4OFDI = 5.5 ' -(9- oxo-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)diisophthalic acid) was solvothermally synthesized. ZJU-61 features a three-dimensional structure with a rare sty-a type topology and has three different types of pore apertures. Abstract:Separation of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2) is important in industry to produce high purity C2H2 but challenged by the close physical properties. Herein, a novel microporous TIFSIX anion pillared metal organic framework ZNU-7 with abundant electronegative sites was prepared for efficient C2H2/CO2 adsorption separation. The uncoordinating fluorine atoms in the large pores selectively capture C2H2 from CO2 by hydrogen bonding. The C2H2 capacity on ZNU-7 is as high as 92.1 cm3/g, over 2.5 folds of the CO2 uptake. The modest C2H2 adsorption heat of 35.3 kJ/mol renders the facile desorption and regeneration of ZNU-7. The much stronger binding of C2H2 compared to CO2 was further revealed by DFT calculations. The practical separation ability was confirmed by the breakthroughs using C2H2/CO2 gas mixtures with good recyclability. The dynamic separation factor of 3.0 for equimolar C2H2/CO2 mixture is comparable to those of many benchmark materials.

Here we report three Hofmann-type metal-organic frameworks, Ni(Pyz)[Ni(CN) 4 ], Fe(Pyz)[Ni(CN) 4 ], and Co(Pyz)[Ni(CN) 4 ] (termed as NiNi-Pyz , FeNi-Pyz , and CoNi-Pyz , respectively, Pyz = pyrazine), featuring narrow pore size and high open metal sites (OMSs) density for selective C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation. Among them, NiNi-Pyz is the outstanding one that shows the best separation performance. NiNi-Pyz exhibits high volumetric C 3 H 6 uptake of 102.3 cm 3 cm −3 and C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 selectivity of 7.8 under ambient conditions. Binary breakthrough studies corroborate the practical C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation capability of NiNi-Pyz , with high C 3 H 6 productivity of 3.0 mmol g −1 . The primary binding sites on NiNi-Pyz , FeNi-Pyz , and CoNi-Pyz are verified by molecular simulations, which confirm that the pore of NiNi-Pyz is slightly smaller than the other two frameworks, resulting in greater host-guest interactions. Additionally, NiNi-Pyz has excellent chemical and thermal stability, and excellent reusability. Combined with low cost and facile synthesis, NiNi-Pyz has promising applications for C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation.

Abstract:Adsorptive separation is an appealing alternative technology to reduce the high energy and capital cost of the distillation separation of propylene/propane; however, it is very challenging to realize. A new flexible metal–organic framework (MOF) material [Zn2(BDC-Cl)2(Py2TTz)] with a doubly interpenetrated pillared paddle wheel structure of pcu (primitive cubic) topology has been realized for this difficult separation for the first time. Through a judicious choice of linkers, the framework has small pore apertures that lead to much more propylene adsorption than propane. The selective adsorption relies on the sieving effect of the flexible framework.
