Abstract:Here, we report a facile synthesis of cupric ion (Cu 2+ )-functionalized polyaniline (PANI)-coated single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)-based chemiresistive sensor for sensitive and selective detection of DMMP. The sensor electrode fabrication involves four steps: (i) immobilization of SWNTs by dip coating method on a silane-treated Si/SiO 2 substrate, (ii) printing of two parallel lines of conducting silver paste 5 mm apart to define the electrode, (iii) in situ electrochemical polymerization of aniline to coat the SWNTs with PANI to make the PANI/SWNT hybrid, and (iv) cupric ion functionalization by submerging the PANI/SWNT in CuCl 2 solution relying on the complexation formation between PANI and copper ions. The hybrid was coordinated with cupric ions to functionalize the hybrid to develop a sensitive and selective sensor exploiting the strong affinity of the phosphonyl group (P=O) of DMMP toward cupric ions. The hybrid formation and functionalization were confirmed using electrical (I–V) characterizations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies. A charge density of 1.0 C·cm −2 was found to be optimum for making the hybrid. The functionalized hybrid exhibited higher sensitivity to DMMP when compared to the pristine hybrid. About 3.5 times enhancement of the sensor response was observed when the pristine hybrid was functionalized with cupric ions. The functionalized hybrids showed an excellent response from 40 to 400 ppm of DMMP with a sensitivity of ~ 0.65% per ppm and LOD of ~ 0.5 ppm. Compared to pristine, the functionalized hybrid exhibited lower and insignificant responses toward known interfering molecules such as methanol, water, dichloromethane, and tetrahydrofuran.
