Abstract:Abstract Efficient and selective CO 2 electroreduction into chemical fuels promises to alleviate environmental pollution and energy crisis, but it relies on catalysts with controllable product selectivity and reaction path. Here, by means of first-principles calculations, we identify six ferroelectric catalysts comprising transition-metal atoms anchored on In 2 Se 3 monolayer, whose catalytic performance can be controlled by ferroelectric switching based on adjusted d -band center and occupation of supported metal atoms. The polarization dependent activation allows effective control of the limiting potential of CO 2 reduction on TM@In 2 Se 3 (TM = Ni, Pd, Rh, Nb, and Re) as well as the reaction paths and final products on Nb@In 2 Se 3 and Re@In 2 Se 3 . Interestingly, the ferroelectric switching can even reactivate the stuck catalytic CO 2 reduction on Zr@In 2 Se 3 . The fairly low limiting potential and the unique ferroelectric controllable CO 2 catalytic performance on atomically dispersed transition-metals on In 2 Se 3 clearly distinguish them from traditional single atom catalysts, and open an avenue toward improving catalytic activity and selectivity for efficient and controllable electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction.

Abstract:The polarization switching plays a crucial role in controlling the final products in the catalytic process. The effect of polarization orientation on nitrogen reduction was investigated by anchoring transition metal atoms to form active centers on ferroelectric material In2Se3. During the polarization switching process, the difference in surface electrostatic potential leads to a redistribution of electronic states. This affects the interaction strength between the adsorbed small molecules and the catalyst substrate, thereby altering the reaction barrier. In addition, the surface states must be considered to prevent the adsorption of other small molecules (such as *O, *OH, and *H). Furthermore, the V@?-In2Se3 possesses excellent catalytic properties, high electrochemical and thermodynamic stability, which facilitates the catalytic process. Machine learning also helps us further explore the underlying mechanisms. The systematic investigation provides novel insights into the design and application of two-dimensional switchable ferroelectric catalysts for various chemical processes.

Abstract:Platinum-based heterogeneous catalysts are critical to many important commercial chemical processes, but their efficiency is extremely low on a per metal atom basis, because only the surface active-site atoms are used. Catalysts with single-atom dispersions are thus highly desirable to maximize atom efficiency, but making them is challenging. Here we report the synthesis of a single-atom catalyst that consists of only isolated single Pt atoms anchored to the surfaces of iron oxide nanocrystallites. This single-atom catalyst has extremely high atom efficiency and shows excellent stability and high activity for both CO oxidation and preferential oxidation of CO in H 2 . Density functional theory calculations show that the high catalytic activity correlates with the partially vacant 5 d orbitals of the positively charged, high-valent Pt atoms, which help to reduce both the CO adsorption energy and the activation barriers for CO oxidation.
CO Catalytic Oxidation of Pt-Loaded Perovskite BaTiO3 Near Ferroelectric-Phase Transition Temperature

Abstract:Perovskite BaTiO 3 （BTO） nanocrystals with a size of 150–200 nm have successfully been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method by employing titanate nanowires as synthetic precursor. Tetragonality and spontaneous ferroelectric polarization of BTO nanocrystals have been determined by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy investigations. BTO nanocrystals loaded with Pt nanoparticles in a size of 2–5 nm have been explored as a catalyst towards CO oxidation to CO 2 . It is interesting to find that CO catalytic conversion rate over Pt-BTO nanocrystals gradually decreased and further increased near 100 °C when the catalytic temperature keeps increasing, whereas the conversion behavior in oxides is expected to be enhanced upon the catalytic temperature grows. Using differential scanning calorimetry and first-principle calculations, the observed catalytic behavior has been discussed on the basis of the ferroelectric polarization effect and the ferroelectric–paraelectric transition of BTO nanocrystals with a Curie temperature of ~110 °C. Below Curie temperature, CO catalytic oxidation could be significantly tailored by ferroelectric polarization of BTO nanocrystals via a promoted dissociation of O 2 molecules. The findings suggest that a ferroelectric polarization in perovskite oxides could be an alternative way to modify the CO catalytic oxidation.

Abstract:Electroreduction of water into hydrogen holds promise to deal with growing environmental pollution and energy crisis, but it relies on efficient catalysts for both hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction, that normally contain precious metal. Here, based on first principles calculations, we identify Co-anchored α-In2Se3 as a bifunctional catalyst that can operate for both hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction. The chemical activity can be largely enhanced or optimized by electrostatic potential due to the polarization, even better than traditional one containing precious metal. Both hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction are dependent on polarization direction of α-In2Se3 and could occur on different polarization domains separately of α-In2Se3, that providing a way for future design of bifunctional catalysts without precious metals based on two-dimensional ferroelectric substrate.

Abstract:As the electron transfer to CO2 is a critical step in the activation of CO2 , it is of significant importance to engineer the electronic properties of CO2 hydrogenation catalysts to enhance their activity. Herein, we prepared Pt3 Co nanocrystals with improved catalytic performance towards CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Pt3 Co octapods, Pt3 Co nanocubes, Pt octapods, and Pt nanocubes were tested, and the Pt3 Co octapods achieved the best catalytic activity. Both the presence of multiple sharp tips and charge transfer between Pt and Co enabled the accumulation of negative charges on the Pt atoms in the vertices of the Pt3 Co octapods. Moreover, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy confirmed that the high negative charge density at the Pt atoms in the vertices of the Pt3 Co octapods promotes the activation of CO2 and accordingly enhances the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.
Facet-dependent electronic state of Pt single atoms anchoring on CeO2 nanocrystal for CO (preferential) oxidation

Abstract:Tuning the electronic state and local structure of single-atom dispersed metals is important to improve the performance of single-atom catalysts. Here, we find that the electronic structure of Pt single atoms (Pt1) depends on the facets of CeO2. Various characterizations and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that Pt1 anchored on the (110) facet of CeO2 nanorods exhibits a positively charged state, while it approaches the metallic state on the (100) facet of CeO2 nanocubes. The different Pt1 states on these facets are attributed to the Pt-O-Ce microstructures with different electron transfer patterns. The positively charged Pt1 shows much weaker adsorption of CO which is favorable for its complete oxidation at lower temperatures. In contrast, the metallic Pt1 can facilitate the activation of H2 in the form of dissociation. The activated H species on metallic Pt1 then promote the preferential oxidation of CO to a greater extent and significantly reduce the reaction barrier. This study provides important implications for tailoring the electronic structure of single-atom centers for heterogeneous catalysis by bonding to specific facet supports.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts show excellent catalytic performance because of their coordination environments and electronic configurations. However, controllable regulation of single-atom permutations still faces challenges. Herein, we demonstrate that a polarization electric field regulates single atom permutations and forms periodic one-dimensional Au single-atom arrays on ferroelectric Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 nanosheets. The Au single-atom arrays greatly lower the Gibbs free energy for CO 2 conversion via Au-O=C=O-Au dual-site adsorption compared to that for Au-O=C=O single-site adsorption on Au isolated single atoms. Additionally, the Au single-atom arrays suppress the depolarization of Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 , so it maintains a stronger driving force for separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. Thus, Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 with Au single-atom arrays exhibit an efficient CO production rate of 34.15 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 , ∼18 times higher than that of pristine Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 . More importantly, the polarization electric field proves to be a general tactic for the syntheses of one-dimensional Pt, Ag, Fe, Co and Ni single-atom arrays on the Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 surface.

Abstract:Considering the high activity in CO oxidation as well as the related reactions, the surface structure of Cu/Pt bimetallic system and its interaction with CO and O 2 molecules have been revisited with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in combination with density-functional theory calculations (DFT). The extensively concerned Cu/Pt subsurface alloy (Cu-SSA) is clearly demonstrated with relative deactivation to CO and drastically weakened binding to O. In contrast, the submonolayer Cu film on Pt(111) manifests a significant enhancement in activating the O 2 molecules while reserving the strong binding to CO at the uncovered Pt area. Detailed control experiments corroborated by DFT calculations revealed that the Cu/Pt interface serves as the critical sites for both O 2 activation and the CO oxidation reaction. Therefore, the submonolayer Cu film may register a more promising catalyst structure than the Cu-SSA configuration for the Cu/Pt bimetallic system.

By means of a novel atomic layer deposition process, growth of single-site Fe 1 O x on a Pt(111) single crystal surface was achieved, as confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The redox properties of the catalyst were characterized by synchrotron radiation based ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). After calcination treatment at 373 K in 1 mbar O 2 the chemical state of the catalyst was determined as Fe 3+ . Reduction in 1 mbar H 2 at 373 K demonstrates a facile reduction to Fe 2+ and complete hydroxylation at significantly lower temperatures than what has been reported for iron oxide nanoparticles. At reaction conditions relevant for preferential oxidation of CO in H 2 (PROX), the catalyst exhibits a Fe 3+ state (ferric hydroxide) at 298 K while re-oxidation of iron oxide clusters does not occur under the same condition. CO oxidation proceeds on the single-site Fe 1 (OH) 3 through a mechanism including the loss of hydroxyl groups in the temperature range of 373 to 473 K, but no reaction is observed on iron oxide clusters. The results highlight the high flexibility of the single iron atom catalyst in switching oxidation states, not observed for iron oxide nanoparticles under similar reaction conditions, which may indicate a higher intrinsic activity of such single interfacial sites than the conventional metal-oxide interfaces. In summary, our findings of the redox properties on inverse single-site iron oxide model catalyst may provide new insights into applied Fe-Pt catalysis.

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts are critical to several chemical processes, but their efficiency is not satisfying enough in some cases, because only the surface active-site atoms participate in the reaction. Henceforth, catalysts with single-atom dispersions are highly desirable to maximize their mass efficiency, but fabricating these structures using a controllable method is still challenging. Most previous studies have focused on crystalline materials. However, amorphous materials may have enhanced performance due to their distorted and isotropic nature with numerous defects. Here reported is the facile synthesis of an atomically dispersed catalyst that consists of single Pt atoms and amorphous Fe2O3 nanosheets. Rational control can regulate the morphology from single atom clusters to sub-nanoparticles. Density functional theory calculations show the synergistic effect resulted from the strong binding and stabilization of single Pt atoms with the strong metal-support interaction between the in situ locally anchored Pt atoms and Fe2O3 lead to a weak CO adsorption. Moreover, the distorted amorphous Fe2O3 with O vacancies is beneficial for the activation of O-2, which further facilitates CO oxidation on nearby Pt sites or interface sites between Pt and Fe2O3, resulting in the extremely high performance for CO oxidation of the atomic catalyst.
Electronic Metal-Support Interactions in Pt/FeOx Nanospheres for CO Oxidation

Abstract:Catalysts containing heterostructures consisting of composite metal/metal oxides have been proven to be very active for many catalytic reactions. In this work, Pt/FeOx heterostructures, including Pt/Fe2O3 and Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres, were synthesized and used for catalytic oxidation of CO. Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanospheres were synthesized by hydrothermal methods, and then platinum precursors were in situ reduced on the prepared FeOx in ethylene glycol solutions. The results of the activity test showed that the Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres exhibited much higher catalytic activity of CO oxidation than the Pt/Fe2O3 nanospheres over the entire temperature range of 50 degrees C-225 degrees C. Complete CO oxidation could be achieved on the Pt/Fe3O4 catalysts at temperatures above 150 degrees C, while the full CO conversion required a temperature of 225 degrees C on the Pt/Fe2O3 catalysts. Several characterization techniques were used to investigate the physicochemical properties in light of the activity differences of the prepared catalysts. The combined results of TEM and XRD showed that Pt/Fe3O4 and Pt/Fe2O3 were comprised of Pt nanoparticles with an average crystallite size of 3.7 nm and 3.6 nm, respectively. The Pt nanoparticles could uniformly distribute throughout the FeOx nanosphere supports. According to XPS and H-2-TPR characterizations, surface chemisorbed oxygen was readily formed on the Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres, and a synergistic interaction might exist between Pt and Fe3O4 nanospheres. The presence of Pt nanoparticles facilitated the activation of surface chemisorbed oxygen, thus mainly contributed to the CO oxidation. In situ DRIFTS results indicated that the oxygen activation was a rate-limiting step in the catalytic oxidation process. Linearly adsorbed CO species on the Pt sites were then oxidized into CO2.

Controllable HCHO and CH3OH catalytic reduction on the surfaces of ferroelectric In2Se3 monolayer with intrinsic defect

Abstract:In this work, we studied different behaviors of the chemical reaction on the two surfaces of two-dimensional ferroelectric In2Se3 which is used as the catalyst. The reduction reactions of organic formaldehyde and methanol on the In2Se3 surface with single In vacancy are investigated from first-principles. We found that the conductive electron states are localized in the region of vacancies originated from the un-paired electrons of the dangling bonds. Considering the acidic environment of the reaction, the hydrogen atoms are used to saturate the three dangling bonds in each In vacancy. By reporting the evolution of total free energy of the reaction, we show the features that the reduction reactions are more readily at one surface than the one at the other surface of substrates. Since the asymmetric two surfaces can be equivalently switched by external electric fields, the results of our work suggest an effective approach of controlling catalytic reaction in practical applications.

Electronic metal-support interactions in Pt/FeOx nanospheres for CO oxidation

Abstract:Catalysts containing heterostructures consisting of composite metal/metal oxides have been proven to be very active for many catalytic reactions. In this work, Pt/FeOx heterostructures, including Pt/Fe2O3 and Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres, were synthesized and used for catalytic oxidation of CO. Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanospheres were synthesized by hydrothermal methods, and then platinum precursors were in situ reduced on the prepared FeOx in ethylene glycol solutions. The results of the activity test showed that the Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres exhibited much higher catalytic activity of CO oxidation than the Pt/Fe2O3 nanospheres over the entire temperature range of 50 degrees C-225 degrees C. Complete CO oxidation could be achieved on the Pt/Fe3O4 catalysts at temperatures above 150 degrees C, while the full CO conversion required a temperature of 225 degrees C on the Pt/Fe2O3 catalysts. Several characterization techniques were used to investigate the physicochemical properties in light of the activity differences of the prepared catalysts. The combined results of TEM and XRD showed that Pt/Fe3O4 and Pt/Fe2O3 were comprised of Pt nanoparticles with an average crystallite size of 3.7 nm and 3.6 nm, respectively. The Pt nanoparticles could uniformly distribute throughout the FeOx nanosphere supports. According to XPS and H-2-TPR characterizations, surface chemisorbed oxygen was readily formed on the Pt/Fe3O4 nanospheres, and a synergistic interaction might exist between Pt and Fe3O4 nanospheres. The presence of Pt nanoparticles facilitated the activation of surface chemisorbed oxygen, thus mainly contributed to the CO oxidation. In situ DRIFTS results indicated that the oxygen activation was a rate-limiting step in the catalytic oxidation process. Linearly adsorbed CO species on the Pt sites were then oxidized into CO2.
Catalytic oxidation of CO over Pt/Fe3O4 catalysts: Tuning O2 activation and CO adsorption

Abstract:The self-inhibition behavior due to CO poisoning on Pt metal particles strongly impairs the performance of CO oxidation. It is an effective method to use reducible metal oxides for supporting Pt metal particles to avoid self-inhibition and to improve catalytic performance. In this work, we used in situ reductions of chloroplatinic acid on commercial Fe3O4 powder to prepare heterogeneousstructured Pt/Fe3O4 catalysts in the solution of ethylene glycol. The heterogeneous Pt/Fe3O4 catalysts achieved a better catalytic performance of CO oxidation compared with the Fe3O4 powder. The temperatures of 50% and 90% CO conversion were achieved above 260°C and 290°C at Pt/Fe3O4, respectively. However, they are accomplished on Fe3O4 at temperatures higher than 310°C. XRD, XPS, and H2-TPR results confirmed that the metallic Pt atoms have a strong synergistic interaction with the Fe3O4 supports. TGA results and transient DRIFTS results proved that the Pt metal particles facilitate the release of lattice oxygen and the formation of oxygen vacancies on Fe3O4. The combined results of O2-TPD and DRIFTS indicated that the activation step of oxygen molecules at surface oxygen vacancies could potentially be the rate-determining step of the catalytic CO oxidation at Pt/ Fe3O4 catalysts. The reaction pathway involves a Pt-assisted Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism.

Non-noble metal single-atom catalyst with MXene support: Fe1/Ti2CO2 for CO oxidation

Abstract:MXenes have attracted considerable attention owing to their versatile and excellent physicochemical properties. Especially, they have potential applications as robust support for single atom catalysts. Here, quantum chemical studies with density functional theory are carried out to systematically investigate the geometries, stability, electronic properties of oxygen functionalized Ti2C (Ti2CO2) supported single-atom catalysts M1/Ti2CO2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag Os, Ir, Pt, Au). A new non-noble metal SAC Fe1/Ti2CO2 has been found to show excellent catalytic performance for low-temperature CO oxidation after screening the group 8-11 transition metals. We find that O2 and CO adsorption on Fe1 atom of Fe1/Ti2CO2 is favorable. Accordingly, five possible mechanisms for CO oxidation on this catalyst are evaluated, including Eley-Rideal, Langmuir-Hinshelwood, Mars–van Krevelen, Termolecular Eley-Rideal, and Termolecular Langmuir-Hinshelwood (TLH) mechanisms. Based on the calculated reaction energies for different pathways, Fe1/Ti2CO2 shows excellent kinetics for CO oxidation via TLH mechanism, with distinct low-energy barrier (0.20 eV) for the rate-determining step. These results demonstrate that Fe1/Ti2CO2 MXene is highly promising 2D materials for building robust non-noble metal catalysts.
