Abstract:We present here a simple proof of the non-existence of a non-periodic invariant point for the quantum baker's map propagator presented in Rubin and Salwen (Annals of Physics, 1998), for Planck's constant h=1/N and N a positive integer.

Abstract:Taking the generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator (GTHO) and singular time-dependent harmonic oscillator (STHO) as illustrative examples, we discuss the connection between the quantum basic invariants and classical Noether's theorem and, for the system, find: (1) The classical basic invariants and general form of classical invariants. (2) The current algebra and corresponding operator algebra. (3) A kind of converse of the Noether's theorem. (4) The connection between the so-called symmetry algebra ({G(k)} algebra) and the classical current algebra through the operator algebra.

Abstract:Quantum baker`s map is a model of chaotic system. We study quantum dynamics for the quantum baker's map. We use the Schack and Caves symbolic description of the quantum baker`s map. We find an exact expression for the expectation value of the time dependent position operator. A relation between quantum and classical trajectories is investigated. Breakdown of the quantum-classical correspondence at the logarithmic timescale is rigorously established.

Abstract:We investigate how classical predictability of the coarse-grained evolution of the quantum baker's map depends on the character of the coarse-graining. Our analysis extends earlier work by Brun and Hartle [Phys. Rev. D 60, 123503 (1999)] to the case of a chaotic map. To quantify predictability, we compare the rate of entropy increase for a family of coarse-grainings in the decoherent histories formalism. We find that the rate of entropy increase is dominated by the number of scales characterising the coarse-graining.

Abstract:As a model to provide a hands-on, elementary understanding of "vortex dynamics", we introduce a piecewise linear non-invertible map called a twisted baker map. We show that the set of hyperbolic repelling periodic points with complex conjugate eigenvalues and that without complex conjugate eigenvalues are simultaneously dense in the phase space. We also show that these two sets equidistribute with respect to the normalized Lebesgue measure, in spite of a non-uniformity in their Lyapunov exponents.

Eigenstates and spectral projection for quantized baker's map

Abstract:We extend the approach from [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2110.15301" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.15301">arXiv:2110.15301</a>] to prove windowed spectral projection estimates and a generalized Weyl law for the (Weyl) quantized baker's map on the torus. The spectral window is allowed to shrink. As a consequence, we obtain a strengthening of the quantum ergodic theorem from [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math-ph/0412058" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math-ph/0412058">arXiv:math-ph/0412058</a>] to hold in shrinking spectral windows, a Weyl law on uniform spreading of eigenvalues, and statistics of random band-limited waves. Using similar techniques, we also investigate generic random eigenbases of a different (non-Weyl) quantization, the Walsh-quantized $D$-baker map, which has high degeneracies in its spectrum. For generic random eigenbases, we prove gaussian eigenstate statistics and QUE with high probability in the semiclassical limit.

Abstract:In this paper the spherical case of the Whittaker Inversion Theorem is given a relatively self-contained proof. This special case can be used as a help in deciphering the handling of the continuous spectrum in the proof of the full theorem. It also leads directly to the solution of the quantum non-periodic Toda Lattice. This is also explained in detail in this paper.

The Graph Structure of Baker's maps Implemented on a Computer

Abstract:The complex dynamics of baker's map and its variants in an infinite-precision mathematical domain have been extensively analyzed in the past five decades. However, their real structure implemented in a finite-precision computer remains unclear. This paper gives an explicit formulation for the quantized baker's map and its extension into higher dimensions. Our study reveals certain properties, such as the in-degree distribution in the state-mapping network approaching a constant with increasing precision, and a consistent maximum in-degree across various levels of fixed-point arithmetic precision. We also observe a fractal pattern in baker's map functional graph as precision increases, characterized by fractal dimensions. We then thoroughly examine the structural nuances of functional graphs created by the higher-dimensional baker's map (HDBM) in both fixed-point and floating-point arithmetic domains. An interesting aspect of our study is the use of interval arithmetic to establish a relationship between the HDBM's functional graphs across these two computational domains. A particularly intriguing discovery is the emergence of a semi-fractal pattern within the functional graph of a specific baker's map variant, observed as the precision is incrementally increased. The insights gained from our research offer a foundational understanding for the dynamic analysis and application of baker's map and its variants in various domains.

Abstract:In this series, we investigate quantum ergodicity at small scales for linear hyperbolic maps of the torus ("cat maps"). In Part I of the series, we prove quantum ergodicity at various scales. Let $N=1/h$, in which $h$ is the Planck constant. First, for all integers $N\in\mathbb{N}$, we show quantum ergodicity at logarithmical scales $|\log h|^{-\alpha}$ for some $\alpha>0$. Second, we show quantum ergodicity at polynomial scales $h^\alpha$ for some $\alpha>0$, in two special cases: $N\in S(\mathbb{N})$ of a full density subset $S(\mathbb{N})$ of integers and Hecke eigenbasis for all integers.

Abstract:The old quantum theory of black body radiation was manifestly logically inconsistent. It required the energies of electric resonators to be both quantized and continuous. To show that this manifest inconsistency was inessential to the theory's recovery of the Planck distribution law, I extract a subtheory free of this manifest inconsistency but from which Planck's law still follows.

Abstract:Focusing on a continuous-time quantum walk on $\mathbb{Z}=\left\{0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots\right\}$, we analyze a probability distribution with which the quantum walker is observed at a position. The walker launches off at a localized state and its system is operated by a spatially periodic Hamiltonian. As a result, we see an asymmetric probability distribution. To catch a long-time behavior, we also try to find a long-time limit theorem and realize that the limit distribution holds a symmetric density function.

A proof of Bott periodicity via Quot schemes and bulk-edge correspondence

Abstract:In this paper, we give alternative proofs of Bott periodicity of $ K $-theory and the bulk-edge correspondence of integer quantum Hall effect. Regarding Bott periodicity, we connect its proof with configuration spaces and use Quot schemes in algebraic geometry in our proof. Regarding the bulk-edge correspondence, we formulate edge indices based on the consideration of Graf--Porta and give a more elementary and self-contained proof.

Silent Orbits and Cancellations in the Wave Trace

Abstract:This paper shows that the wave trace of a bounded and strictly convex planar domain may be arbitrarily smooth in a neighborhood of some point in the length spectrum. In other words, the Poisson relation, which asserts that the singular support of the wave trace is contained in the closure of $\pm$ the length spectrum, can almost be made into a strict inclusion. To do so, we construct large families of domains for which there exist multiple periodic billiard orbits having the same length but different Maslov indices. Using the microlocal Balian-Bloch-Zelditch parametrix for wave invariants developed in our previous paper, we solve a large system of equations for the boundary curvature jets, which leads to the required cancellations. We call such periodic orbits silent, since they are undetectable from the ostensibly audible wave trace. Such cancellations show that there are potential limitations in using the wave trace for inverse spectral problems and more fundamentally, that the Laplace spectrum and length spectrum are inherently different mathematical objects, at least insofar as the wave trace is concerned.

We will briefly review the current experimental status and discuss the sensitivity of the future proton decay detectors, and we specifically present a possibility of a scalable multi-megaton water Cherenkov detector immersed in the shallow water.

Abstract:We consider vacuum transitions by bubble nucleation among 4D vacua with different values and signs of the cosmological constant Λ , including both up and down tunnelings. Following the Hamiltonian formalism, we explicitly compute the transition probabilities for all possible combinations of initial and final values of Λ and find that up tunneling is allowed starting not only from dS spacetime but also from AdS and Minkowski spacetimes. We trace the difference with the Euclidean approach, where these transitions are found to be forbidden, to the difference of treating the latter spacetimes as pure (vacuum) states rather than mixed states with correspondingly vanishing or infinite entropy. We point out that these transitions are best understood as limits of the corresponding transitions with black holes in the zero mass limit M→0 . We find that detailed balance is satisfied provided we use the Hartle-Hawking sign of the wave function for nucleating spacetimes. In the formal limit Λ→−∞ , the transition rates for anti–de Sitter (AdS) to dS agree with both the Hartle-Hawking and Vilenkin amplitudes for the creation of dS from nothing. This is consistent with a proposal of Brown and Dahlen to define "nothing" as AdS in this limit. For M≠0 , the detailed balance is satisfied only in a range of mass values. We compute the bubble trajectory after nucleation and find that, contrary to the M=0 case, the trajectory does not correspond to the open universe slicing of dS. Abstract:In this addendum we strengthen the results of math-ph/0002010 in the case of polynomial phases. We prove that Cesaro means of the pair correlation functions of certain integrable quantum maps on the 2-sphere at level N tend almost always to the Poisson (uniform limit). The quantum maps are exponentials of Hamiltonians which have the form a p(I) + b I, where I is the action, where p is a polynomial and where a,b are two real numbers. We prove that for any such family and for almost all a,b, the pair correlation tends to Poisson on average in N. The results involve Weyl estimates on exponential sums and new metric results on continued fractions. They were motivated by a comparison of the results of math-ph/0002010 with some independent results on pair correlation of fractional parts of polynomials by Rudnick-Sarnak.

Abstract:In the framework of the planar Euler problem in the quasi--periodic regime, the formulae of the periods available in the literature are simple only on one side of their singularity. In this paper, we complement such formulae with others, which result simpler on the other side. The derivation of such new formulae uses the Keplerian limit and complex analysis tools. As an application, we prove a conjecture by H. Dullin and R. Montgomery, which states that such periods, as well as their ratio, the {\it rotation number}, are monotone functions of their non--trivial first integral, at any fixed energy level.

Abstract:In classical physics the energy density of a field is always positive. However this does not hold true for quantum physics where the energy density of a field can be locally negative. There are limits on the weighted average of this negative energy density called the quantum inequalities. Recently this author has provided a number of examples which show that the quantum inequalities are not valid. In this paper we will examine a previously published proof of the spatial quantum inequality for a zero mass scalar field in 1-1 dimensional space-time. It will be shown that there is a possible problem with this proof due to an ambiguity associated with point split regularization and the definition of the Hadamard form for the two point function.

Stable manifolds for periodically perturbed maps

Abstract:We prove that if a certain entry in the map of the Hadamard-Perron theorem is $T$-periodic in one of the variables, then the stable manifold guaranteed by the Hadamard-Perron theorem is a graph of a $T$-periodic function. As an application, we extend the classical Levinson's result about the occurrence of an attracting closed invariant curve near a stable cycle of a system of autonomous equations under periodic perturbations to hybrid differential equations.

Abstract:We study the N -point Coon amplitude discovered first by Baker and Coon in the 1970s and then again independently by Romans in the 1980s. This Baker-Coon-Romans (BCR) amplitude retains several properties of tree-level string amplitudes, namely duality and factorization, with a q -deformed version of the string spectrum. Although the formula for the N -point BCR amplitude is only valid for q > 1, the four-point case admits a straightforward extension to all q ≥ 0 which reproduces the usual expression for the four-point Coon amplitude. At five points, there are inconsistencies with factorization when pushing q < 1. Despite these issues, we find a new relation between the five-point BCR amplitude and Cheung and Remmen's four-point basic hypergeometric amplitude, placing the latter within the broader family of Coon amplitudes. Finally, we compute the q → ∞ limit of the N -point BCR amplitudes and discover an exact correspondence between these amplitudes and the field theory amplitudes of a scalar transforming in the adjoint representation of a global symmetry group with an infinite set of non-derivative single-trace interaction terms. This correspondence at q = ∞ is the first definitive realization of the Coon amplitude (in any limit) from a field theory described by an explicit Lagrangian.
