Abstract:We give a simple argument suggesting that in a consistent quantum field theory tunneling from Minkowski to a lower energy vacuum must be impossible. Theories that allow for such a tunneling also allow for localized states of negative mass, and therefore, should be inconsistent.

Abstract:The quantum world is described by a unit vector in the Hilbert space and the Hamiltonian. Do they, as abstract basis-independent objects, give a complete description of the physical world, or should we include observables like positions and momenta and the decomposition into subsystems? According to "Hilbert-space fundamentalism" they give a complete description, and all other features of the physical world emerge from them (Carroll, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2103.09780" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2103.09780">arXiv:2103.09780</a>). This thesis was previously refuted in (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2102.08620" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2102.08620">arXiv:2102.08620</a>) in full generality. But being an abstract non-uniqueness proof, and not a constructive one, it may not be convincing enough to the busy reader who wants to avoid mathematical details. Here I give a simpler, intuitive and constructive refutation, by showing that concrete physically distinct worlds can be described by the same unit vector and evolve according to the same law.

Abstract:We investigate bipartite particle number fluctuations near the rank-2 exceptional points (EPs) of 𝒫𝒯-symmetric Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models. Beyond a conformal field theory of massless fermions, fluctuations or equivalently compressibility is negative definite and exhibits superinflation in leading order at EPs, due to the defectiveness in the biorthogonal Hilbert space. Associated with the bipartite von Neumann entanglement entropy, a parameter in an anomalous correspondence referencing from a purely non-Hermitian limit helps characterize two inequivalent EP sets. Our work paves the way for understanding the singularity of fluctuations relevant to EPs, more promisingly detectable in experiments.

Abstract:A bstract Following Pasterski-Shao-Strominger we construct a new basis of states in the single-particle Hilbert space of massless particles as a linear combination of standard Wigner states. Under Lorentz transformation the new basis states transform in the Unitary Principal Continuous Series representation. These states are obtained if we consider the little group of a null momentum direction rather than a null momentum. The definition of the states in terms of the Wigner states makes it easier to study the action of space-time translation in this basis. We show by taking into account the effect of space-time translation that the dynamics of massless particles described by these states takes place completely on the null-infinity of the Minkowski space . We then second quantize the theory in this basis and obtain a manifestly Poincare invariant (field) theory of free massless particles living on null-infinity. This theory has unitary time evolution. The null-infinity arises in this case purely group-theoretically without any reference to bulk space-time. Action of BMS is particularly natural in this picture. As a by-product we generalize the conformal primary wave-functions for massless particles in a way which makes the action of space-time translation simple. Using these wave-functions we write down a modified Mellin(-Fourier) transformation of the S-matrix elements. The resulting amplitude is Poincare covariant. Under Poincare transformation it transforms like products of primaries of inhomogeneous SL(2, C) (ISL(2, C)) inserted at various points of null-infinity. ISL(2, C) primaries are defined in the paper.

Abstract:In quantum field theory, the vacuum is widely considered to be a complex medium populated with virtual particle + antiparticle pairs. To an observer experiencing uniform acceleration, it is generally held that these virtual particles become real, appearing as a gas at a temperature which grows with the acceleration. This is the Unruh effect. However, it can be shown that vacuum complexity is an artifact, produced by treating quantum field theory in a manner that does not manifestly enforce causality. Choosing a quantization approach that patently enforces causality, the quantum field theory vacuum is barren, bereft even of virtual particles. We show that acceleration has no effect on a trivial vacuum; hence, there is no Unruh effect in such a treatment of quantum field theory. Since the standard calculations suggesting an Unruh effect are formally consistent, insofar as they have been completed, there must be a cancelling contribution that is omitted in the usual analyses. We argue that it is the dynamical action of conventional Lorentz transformations on the structure of an Unruh detector. Given the equivalence principle, an Unruh effect would correspond to black hole radiation. Thus, our perspective has significant consequences for quantum gravity and black hole physics: no Unruh effect entails the absence of black hole radiation evaporation.

Vacua in locally de Sitter cosmologies, and how to distinguish them

Abstract:(1+1) -dimensional locally de Sitter–Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with compact spatial sections allow cosh, sinh, and exponential evolution laws, each with a freely specifiable spatial circumference parameter, and the value of this parameter has an invariant geometric meaning for the cosh and sinh evolution laws. We identify geometrically preferred states for a quantized massive scalar field on these cosmologies, some singled out by adiabatic criteria in the distant past, with an ambiguity remaining due to a massive zero mode, and others induced from the Euclidean vacuum on standard ( 1+1 )-dimensional de Sitter space by a quotient construction. We show that a comoving quantum observer, modelled as an Unruh-DeWitt detector, can distinguish these states from the Euclidean vacuum on standard de Sitter space. Numerical plots are given in selected parameter regimes. We also evaluate the field's stress-energy tensor expectation value for those states that are induced from the Euclidean vacuum by a quotient construction. Abstract:A finite non-classical framework for qubit physics is described that challenges the conclusion that the Bell Inequality has been shown to have been violated experimentally, even approximately. This framework postulates the primacy of a fractal-like 'invariant set' geometry I U in cosmological state space, on which the universe evolves deterministically and causally, and from which space-time and the laws of physics in space-time are emergent. Consistent with the assumed primacy of I U , a non-Euclidean (and hence non-classical) metric g p is defined in cosmological state space. Here, p is a large but finite integer (whose inverse may reflect the weakness of gravity). Points that do not lie on I U are necessarily g p -distant from points that do. g p is related to the p-adic metric of number theory. Using number-theoretic properties of spherical triangles, the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, whose violation would rule out local realism, is shown to be undefined in this framework. Moreover, the CHSH-like inequalities violated experimentally are shown to be g p -distant from the CHSH inequality. This result fails in the singular limit p = ∞ , at which g p is Euclidean and the corresponding model classical. Although Invariant Set Theory is deterministic and locally causal, it is not conspiratorial and does not compromise experimenter free will. The relationship between Invariant Set Theory, Bohmian Theory, The Cellular Automaton Interpretation of Quantum Theory and p-adic Quantum Theory is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we show that -ontic models, as defined by Harrigan and Spekkens (HS), cannot reproduce quantum theory. Instead of focusing on probability, we use information theoretic considerations to show that all pure states of -ontic models must be orthogonal to each other, in clear violation of quantum mechanics. Given that (i) Pusey, Barrett and Rudolph (PBR) previously showed that -epistemic models, as defined by HS, also contradict quantum mechanics, and (ii) the HS categorization is exhausted by these two types of models, we conclude that the HS categorization itself is problematic as it leaves no space for models that can reproduce quantum theory.

Abstract:A Poincaré multiplet of mass eigenstates cannot be a subspace of a space with a D -vector position operator : the Heisenberg algebra implies by a simple argument that each Poincaré multiplet of definite mass vanishes. The same conclusion follows from the Stone-von Neumann theorem. In a quantum theory the constraint of an absolutely continuous spectrum to a lower dimensional submanifold yields zero even if Dirac's treatment of the corresponding classical constraint defines a symplectic submanifold with a consistent corresponding quantum model. Its Hilbert space is not a subspace of the unconstrained theory. Hence the operator relations of the unconstrained model need not carry over to the constrained model. Our argument excludes quantized worldline models of relativistic particles and the physical states of the covariant quantum string. We correct misconceptions about the generators of Lorentz transformations acting on particles.

Abstract:In classical physics the energy density of a field is always positive. However this does not hold true for quantum physics where the energy density of a field can be locally negative. There are limits on the weighted average of this negative energy density called the quantum inequalities. Recently this author has provided a number of examples which show that the quantum inequalities are not valid. In this paper we will examine a previously published proof of the spatial quantum inequality for a zero mass scalar field in 1-1 dimensional space-time. It will be shown that there is a possible problem with this proof due to an ambiguity associated with point split regularization and the definition of the Hadamard form for the two point function.

Abstract:In a previous paper [quant-ph/0207017] I gave an elementary proof, starting from stated assumptions of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, that identical spin-zero particles must be bosons. Since then it has been suggested that my proof assumed its conclusion, and that it is based on a theory "quite different from standard physics." [quant-ph/0304088] I show here that those two statements are incorrect.

Abstract:We consider vacuum transitions by bubble nucleation among 4D vacua with different values and signs of the cosmological constant Λ , including both up and down tunnelings. Following the Hamiltonian formalism, we explicitly compute the transition probabilities for all possible combinations of initial and final values of Λ and find that up tunneling is allowed starting not only from dS spacetime but also from AdS and Minkowski spacetimes. We trace the difference with the Euclidean approach, where these transitions are found to be forbidden, to the difference of treating the latter spacetimes as pure (vacuum) states rather than mixed states with correspondingly vanishing or infinite entropy. We point out that these transitions are best understood as limits of the corresponding transitions with black holes in the zero mass limit M→0 . We find that detailed balance is satisfied provided we use the Hartle-Hawking sign of the wave function for nucleating spacetimes. In the formal limit Λ→−∞ , the transition rates for anti–de Sitter (AdS) to dS agree with both the Hartle-Hawking and Vilenkin amplitudes for the creation of dS from nothing. This is consistent with a proposal of Brown and Dahlen to define "nothing" as AdS in this limit. For M≠0 , the detailed balance is satisfied only in a range of mass values. We compute the bubble trajectory after nucleation and find that, contrary to the M=0 case, the trajectory does not correspond to the open universe slicing of dS. On the consistency of relative facts

Abstract:Lawrence et al. have presented an argument purporting to show that "relative facts do not exist" and, consequently, "Relational Quantum Mechanics is incompatible with quantum mechanics". The argument is based on a GHZ-like contradiction between constraints satisfied by measurement outcomes in an extended Wigner's friend scenario. Here we present a strengthened version of the argument, and show why, contrary to the claim by Lawrence et al., these arguments do not contradict the consistency of a theory of relative facts. Rather, considering this argument helps clarify how one should not think about a theory of relative facts, like RQM.

Abstract:We introduce a new interpretation of quantum mechanics by examining the Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen's (EPR) paradox and Bell's inequality experiments under the assumption that the vacuum has an inhomogeneous texture for energy levels below the Heisenberg time-energy uncertainty relation. In this article, selected results from the most reliable Bell's inequality experiments will be quantitatively analyzed to show that our interpretation of quantum mechanics creates a new loophole in Bell's inequality, and that the past experimental findings do not contradict our new interpretation. Under the vacuum texture interpretation of quantum mechanics in a Bell's inequality experiment, the states of the pair of particles created at the source (e.g. during parametric down conversion) is influenced by an inhomogeneous vacuum texture sent from the measurement apparatus. We will also show that the resulting pair of particles are not entangled and that the theory of vacuum texture preserves local realism with complete causality. This article will also suggest an experiment to definitively confirm the existence of vacuum texture.

Abstract:If a mathematical theory contains incompatible postulates then it is likely that the theory will produce theorems or results that are contradictory. It will be shown that this is the case with Dirac field theory. An example of such a contradiction is the problem asociated with evaluating the Schwinger term. It is generally known that different ways of evaluating this quantity yield different results. It will be shown that the reason for this is that Dirac field theory is mathematically inconsistent, i.e., it contains incompatible assumptions or postulates. The generally accepted definition of the vacuum state must be modified in order to create a consistent theory.
