Abstract:Curtain walls are widely used in high-rise office buildings, but the curtain wall enclosure significantly impacts building energy consumption, which contradicts China's dual carbon goals. This article proposes a ventilated energy-productive wall, with cogeneration to replace the curtain wall in order to reduce energy consumption. A ventilated energy-productive wall consists of a photovoltaic module, an air channel and a curtain wall, which performance is closely related to the structure and size of the air channel. According to the physical model of the ventilated energy-productive wall, a mathematical model is established and solved to analyze the airflow characteristics within the air channel and the heat transfer characteristics of the system. Numerical results show that the inner surface and average temperature of the photovoltaic panel are reduced by a maximum of 7.12 % and 2.12 % respectively by adding an air channel. The maximum temperature drop occurs in the 200-mm-thick air channel, and its outlet temperature drop is approximately 6.14 % lower than that of a 140-mm-thick air channel. An energy room is built based on the optimization results with a 200-mm-thick air channel in the ventilated energy-productive wall. At the peak moment, the average testing temperature on the inner and outer surfaces of the photovoltaic module are 50.12 °C and 48.9 °C, respectively, and the average temperature in the air channel is 38.2 °C. The numerical results agree well with the experimental results with an error not exceeding 5 %.

Abstract:Curtain wall systems stand out as a pivotal domain within the construction sector's endeavors towards energy efficiency and carbon mitigation. To refine the evaluation framework for carbon emissions within this industry, this paper explores the calculation and assessment method for building curtain walls. The article first reviews the current research status regarding carbon emissions from materials and the impact of curtain walls on buildings in the operational stage. Based on lifecycle theory, the carbon emissions from building curtain walls are divided into six stages: material acquisition, processing and production, installation and construction, transportation, use and maintenance, and dismantling. On this basis, this paper proposes a method for calculating carbon emissions from building curtain walls. Following that, a case study is conducted using a specific glass curtain wall project for illustrative analysis. The results indicate that the carbon emissions from the material acquisition stage constitute approximately 90% of the total, serving as the primary source of carbon emissions for glass curtain walls. Furthermore, the scientific application of photovoltaics can significantly reduce the carbon emission levels of building curtain walls. Finally, an analysis was conducted on the current issues existing in the evaluation of carbon emissions.

Abstract:China is committed to reaching peak carbon by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. The goals of reducing energy consumption and building a "beautiful China" are being urgently pursued in China. The building studied in this paper is located in the city of Turpan, where the problem of excessive energy use among buildings is significant due to the region's hot summers and cold winters. Additionally, the fact that the office building studied in this paper has an east–west orientation is significant: the building's main façade is oriented to the west, comprising a large area of single-layer glass curtain wall. Based on this, this paper proposes optimization strategies from two perspectives of renovation and new construction. Four design options are proposed at the retrofit level: glazed circular curtain wall; glazed enclosed curtain wall; west-facing double-glazed curtain wall circulation combined with south-facing light from the east; recycling of windows on the inside of the exterior glass curtain wall. These suggestions focus on retrofitting the glass curtain wall on the west elevation of the building. Two design options are proposed at the new-build level: west-facing south-oriented light and west-facing north-oriented light. These suggestions were primarily built around the idea of changing the orientation of the windows on the west elevation. The results show that the optimal solution is to implement the west-facing double-glazed curtain wall circulation combined with south-facing light from the east. This program shows a 64.14% reduction in heating energy consumption, a 77.12% reduction in cooling energy consumption, and a 69.67% reduction in total energy consumption. The above research has improved the deficiencies in the performance-based energy efficiency retrofit of office buildings in the region and provided new ideas and suggestions for policymakers and designers to build energy-efficiency retrofits in the early stages.

Abstract:The Shanghai Tower,which has an architectural height of 632 m,is the most representative tall building design model in China.The super high-rise buildings in the process of construction and operation involves land saving,material saving,energy saving,emission reduction and other aspects of issues.Therefore,it is necessary to introduce the green building design concept to reduce unnecessary energy consumption in the construction process.Based on the green building evaluation standard and index,focusing on the aspects of design technology of large diameter deep foundation pit and foundation in complex environment,aerodynamic based wind resistant design technology,design technology of magnetic eddy current TMD etc.,this paper introduces the idea of green building in the Shanghai Tower project.Through the comprehensive use of related technologies,many technical problems have been solved,resulting in enormous social and economic benefits.The successful construction of the Shanghai Tower project fully embodies the 'applicable,economic,green,artistic'developmental ideology.The related technical achievements have important reference values for other high-rise building green design.

Abstract:The problem of global warming has become a major global concern, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is crucial to mitigate its effects. Photovoltaic power generation is clean, low-carbon energy. Photovoltaic products can convert solar energy into electricity, reducing CO2 emissions to an extent. This paper introduces the life cycle evaluation theory to assess the carbon emissions of photovoltaic curtain walls. PVsyst software allows for the simulation and calculation of power generation under different influencing factors, which provides valuable information about the carbon reduction potential of photovoltaic curtain walls. The evaluation of carbon emissions and their influencing factors using grey correlation analysis further enhances the understanding of the benefits and limitations of photovoltaic curtain walls. According to the results of grey correlation analysis, this paper concludes that the degree of various influencing factors on carbon emission of a photovoltaic curtain wall under different scenarios in descending order is as follows: orientation, location, inclination, shadow occlusion, and seasonal changes. The research findings of this paper provide a theoretical reference for the future development and application of photovoltaic curtain walls. By demonstrating the carbon reduction potential of this technology, this study contributes to promoting the adoption of photovoltaic curtain walls as a sustainable solution to mitigate the effects of global warming.

Abstract:Abstract Stone curtain walls are more and more widely used due to their good decorative effect and hard texture. However, with the increase of their service life, many safety issues have gradually appeared and caused widespread concern from all walks of life. The dry-fasten stone curtain wall of an office building has been used for more than 12 years. Through on-site inspection and testing of the verticality of the stone curtain wall, the connection node between the stone curtain wall and the main structure, the stone curtain wall framework system, the curtain wall stone panel and weather resisting silicone sealant, some suggestions for transformation are proposed for the existed problems.

Abstract:For the development and progress direction of contemporary construction industry, greening has always been one of the most important topics, which is basically consistent with China’s guidelines on environmental protection and resource conservation, with emphasis on whether it can effectively improve the ecological environment quality in urban areas, control various hazards caused by pollution, and build a healthy urban environment for people. Nowadays, the building materials market has also developed in an all-round way, and the types of materials for exterior wall insulation are also increasing. Relatively, the practical application difficulty of various technologies in the construction industry also shows an increasing trend. In order to better highlight the important role of insulation materials for green buildings, this paper will explore the application of exterior wall insulation materials with strong energy saving in green buildings.

Abstract:Taking the hyperbolic glass curtain wall project of the Wuhan Jinyinhu Commercial Plaza as an example, the characteristics of different curved glass forming technologies were analyzed in this paper. Combined with the actual engineering situation, the curved steel process is selected to produce the hyperbolic glass curtain wall, and the application of BIM technology in the quality control of hyperbolic glass curtain wall in the production process was analyzed, and the effects of heating condition, bending time, cooling condition, and bending tempering error in the manufacturing accuracy of the curved glass curtain wall were studied, in hope that this project can provide practical reference for similar curtain wall design construction in the future.

Abstract:This paper discusses the problem that the output efficiency of photovoltaic module decreases with the temperature rise of its environment. Combining photovoltaic power generation and photothermal technology, a new model of solar photovoltaic photothermal integrated louver curtain wall is proposed, which can not only have photovoltaic power generation function, but also create a good thermal environment for buildings and further reduce building energy consumption. The curtain wall model is established by computational fluid dynamics software. For the given initial parameters, the data of temperature field and flow field are obtained through simulation, and the influence of curtain wall system operation on the indoor thermal environment of the building is theoretically studied. It is found that the solar photovoltaic and photothermal integrated louver curtain wall not only has good thermoelectric benefits, but also improves the indoor thermal environment. Especially in summer and winter, the air conditioning load is reduced, which has a good building energy saving effect and provides a basis for actual building construction.

Abstract:Post-occupancy evaluations of buildings help us understand the effectiveness of building designs. Most of such evaluations focus on the overall building performance and on the indoor air environment, and few focus on individual technologies. In this paper, we report a user experience-based evaluation on multiple green technologies applied in a high-rise building constructed 17 years ago. These technologies include a circular building design, innovative floor plans, a corridor-type, double-skin facade with cavity shading, and three-dimensional greening design. Data were obtained through a questionnaire for the building occupants and on-site measurements of environmental variables. The results show that the occupants were most satisfied with the three-dimensional greening, natural lighting and ventilation in the public spaces, and the sound and thermal environment of the rooms with the double facade. They were not satisfied with room ventilation, solar shading, or lighting adjustment provided by the double facade. In addition, the aesthetic appearance of the circular building was not recognized by the occupants, who appeared to pay more attention to its space efficiency than the external appearance. This was true especially for older occupants. The users expressed a strong demand for outdoor leisure spaces and green vegetation. However, the practicality and functionality of three-dimensional greening, along with the interference of the glass curtain wall on vegetation growth, calls for more attention to the design. The female occupants were found to be more sensitive to the thermal and acoustic environment. Based on these results, we provide recommendations on the maintenance of the building and the future design of these measures.

Abstract:Abstract As the main channel of heat and humidity exchange between the building and the external environment, the improvement of the thermal insulation performance of the external wall is crucial to reduce the building energy consumption. However, the influence of heat reflective exterior walls on the energy consumption of air conditioning is rarely studied. This paper aims to study the effects of heat reflective walls on air conditioning energy consumption (ACEC) through testing and simulation. The measured results show that the heat reflective exterior walls will reduce the summer ACEC of the room and increase the ACEC of the room in winter, but the contribution rate is higher in summer than in winter. At the same time, the ACEC simulation results show that the energy saving per unit area of the heat reflective wall of the office building is 0.0149 kWh/(m 2 •a) for the west outer wall, 0.0131 kWh/(m 2 •a) for the east outer wall, 0.0121 kWh/(m 2 •a) for the south outer wall, and 0.0113 kWh/(m 2 •a) for the north outer wall. These provide a useful reference for the research and application of heat reflective walls in Chongqing.

Abstract:Demand for thermal comfort is high in regions characterized by hot summers and cold winters. Active solutions commonly used to improve comfort level in buildings may increase energy consumption, which hinders the sustainable development of cities. It is of great significance to balance the comfort and energy during the building design phase. Passive solutions present the potential in energy saving, such as glass curtain wall. However, it is difficult to ensure thermal stability in building because of the unsteady heat exchange through glass curtain wall, further affecting the balance. In this work, transitional space consisting of glass façade, i.e., green glass space (GGS), between indoor and outdoor environments is proposed to achieve a favorable balance. The impacts of design parameters (i.e., height and angle of green glass space) are investigated on both thermal comfort and energy efficiency, which are carried out in a case study. Numerical simulation is validated by experimental data. Air distribution performance index (ADPI) and percentage of dissatisfied (PD) are used as indicators to evaluate thermal comfort. Energy saving coefficient is put forward as an index for energy efficiency of green glass space. Results showed that (1) green glass space can decrease heating energy consumption by approximately 50% compared with non-green glass spaces, (2) air distribution performance index is above 85% and percentage of dissatisfied is below 1% at various heights and angles, and (3) optimal design parameters of green glass space are achieved at a height of 0.9 H (H is the building height) and an angle of 90° This study can provide an important reference of design strategy for the sustainable development of green building and cities.

Abstract:<p>Prefabricated buildings recently became more prominent providing significant benefits including contribution to emission reductions at scale and the manufacturing of building components to high accuracy. However, in China, the proportion of prefabrication is lower than that in many developed countries. The prefabricated wall is one of the most important precast elements and its thermal performance has significant impacts on buildings' energy consumption and environmental performance. This work reviews the thermal performance of prefabricated walls encompassing survey of two common structures, precast concrete sandwich walls and lightweight steel-framed walls. The applicability and limitations of methods frequently used to determine the thermal resistances of these two walls are presented. This article also shows a literature review on the implications of prefabricated buildings to China's emission reductions. Compared to conventional buildings, the contribution of prefabricated buildings on China's emission reduction has been recognized. The potentials on building energy efficient and waste minimisation were also acknowledged. It is concluded that the prefabrication has been generally considered to be a more sustainable method in building sector. The energy-saving potential of prefabrication was demonstrated based on life cycle analysis and thermal performance evaluation. It was found the thermal performance of buildings has multiplied by adopting prefabricated façade elements for building retrofitting. More studies related to thermal performance of prefabricated walls with different structures shall be covered in future research. It is also suggested to develop a more representative result of energy performance by adopting prefabrication, with all dimensions of prefabricated buildings' feature considered.</p>

Design optimization and field demonstration of natural ventilation for high-rise residential buildings

Abstract:Natural ventilation in residential buildings has a great potential for conserving energy and improving the health of occupants. This paper first presents a design strategy for optimizing natural ventilation in high-rise residential buildings in Chongqing, China, a region with unfavorably low wind speed. Through the use of CFD modeling, building orientation and spacing were adjusted, wind paths were created into internal zones, and two windows were constructed in each bedroom. The optimized design reduced the age of air to less than 6min in 90% of the rooms, as compared to an age of greater than 30min in 50% of the rooms in a conventional design. Natural ventilation was found to be effective in the Chongqing area with the optimized design. This investigation also measured the local age of air and air change rate in a building with the optimized design using a tracer-gas method. The measurements confirmed the reliability of the CFD results.
