Abstract:From the time he won his first Grand Slam championship at Wimbledon in 2003, Roger Federer has been among the most dominant players in the history of tennis. Between 2004 and 2009, Federer won 14 of 24 Grand Slam events and reached a record 10 consecutive major finals. In recent years, historic rivalries, injuries, and time itself have dampened Federer's aura of invincibility, and his peers have equaled or surpassed many of his records. Although he may not be the indomitable force he once was, Federer remains the most sublime professional in the sport. In a 2006 editorial in The New York Times titled "Roger Federer as Religious Experience," David Foster Wallace wrote, "The metaphysical explanation is that Roger Federer is one of those rare, preternatural athletes who appear to be exempt, at least in part, from certain physical laws." 1
