Abstract:Using extended coherent states, an analytical exact study has been carried out for the quantum Rabi model (QRM) with two arbitrary qubits in a very concise way. The G-functions with 2×2 determinants are generally derived. For the same coupling constants, the simplest G-function, resembling that in the one-qubit QRM, can be obtained. Zeros of the G-function yield the whole regular spectrum. The exceptional eigenvalues, which do not belong to the zeros of the G function, are obtained in the closed form. The Dark states in the case of the same coupling can be detected clearly in a continued-fraction technique. The present concise solution is conceptually clear and practically feasible to the general two-qubit QRM and therefore has many applications.

Abstract:Principal component analysis (PCA) is an important dimensionality reduction method in machine learning and data analysis. Recently, the quantum version of PCA has been established to diagonalize quantum states. Although these quantum algorithms promise quantum advantages, they require substantial resources beyond the reach of state-of-the-art quantum technologies. This work aims to reduce resource requirements and improve the efficiency of quantum principal component analysis. Assuming that the quantum state is accessed through a purified quantum query model and a sampling model, we propose quantum algorithms that use minimal resource requirements for ancillary qubits to reveal properties of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of a state. In particular, we show that estimating eigenvalue with error and success probability larger than requests a query complexity { } and a sample complexity { }, respectively. To our knowledge, our result is the first quantum speedup that achieves asymptotic linear scaling in for quantum PCA. As applications, we discuss estimating the minimum relative entropy of entanglement of bipartite pure-states and performing quantum state discrimination tasks. We show that quantum speedups are maintained when the pure state has a low Schmidt number and states of discrimination have a low rank. This study opens up a new quantum principal component analysis method for high-dimensional quantum data analysis and discusses its application in quantum information processing tasks.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a low-complexity quantum principal component analysis (qPCA) algorithm. Similar to the state-of-the-art qPCA, it achieves dimension reduction by extracting principal components of the data matrix, rather than all components of the data matrix, to quantum registers, so that the samples of measurement required can be reduced considerably. Both our qPCA and Lins qPCA are based on quantum singular-value thresholding (QSVT). The key of Lins qPCA is to combine QSVT, and modified QSVT is to obtain the superposition of the principal components. The key of our algorithm, however, is to modify QSVT by replacing the rotation-controlled operation of QSVT with the controlled-not operation to obtain the superposition of the principal components. As a result, this small trick makes the circuit much simpler. Particularly, the proposed qPCA requires three phase estimations, while the state-of-the-art qPCA requires five phase estimations. Since the runtime of qPCA mainly comes from phase estimations, the proposed qPCA achieves a runtime of roughly 3/5 of that of the state of the art. We simulate the proposed qPCA on the IBM quantum computing platform, and the simulation result verifies that the proposed qPCA yields the expected quantum state.

Abstract:The concept of quantum correlation matrix for observables leads to the application of the PCA (Principal Component Analysis) also for quantum system in Hilbert space. It is shown that, in the case of a 2x2 spin system where the observables are the Pauli matrices and a polarization vector is acting on the density matrix, meaningful results can be obtained by the PCA in terms of qubit properties. In particular, it is shown that by choosing, for example, the (x,z) spinors, the axes of the principal components (PC) coincide with the circular polarization basis on the Block Sphere.

Abstract:Principal component analysis (PCA) is a widely applied but rather time-consuming tool in machine learning techniques. In 2014, Lloyd, Mohseni, and Rebentrost proposed a quantum PCA (qPCA) algorithm [Lloyd, Mohseni, and Rebentrost, Nat. Phys. 10, 631 (2014)NPAHAX1745-247310.1038/nphys3029] that still lacks experimental demonstration due to the experimental challenges in preparing multiple quantum state copies and implementing quantum phase estimations. Here, we propose a new qPCA algorithm using the hybrid classical-quantum control, where parameterized quantum circuits are optimized with simple measurement observables, which significantly reduces the experimental complexity. As one important PCA application, we implement a human face recognition process using the images from the Yale Face Dataset. By training our quantum processor, the eigenface information in the training dataset is encoded into the parameterized quantum circuit, and the quantum processor learns to recognize new face images from the test dataset with high fidelities. Our work paves a new avenue toward the study of qPCA applications in theory and experiment.

Abstract:In recent years, quantum Rabi model has aroused considerable interest because of its fundamental importance and potential applications in quantum technologies. For a conventional cavity-quantum-electrodynamic (cavity-QED) system involving the interaction between an atom and photons in a cavity, the atom-photon coupling frequency is much smaller than the transition frequency of the atom and the frequency of the cavity mode. This cavity-QED system is usually described by the Jaynes-Cummings model in which the rotating-wave approximation can be adopted by neglecting the counter-rotating coupling terms in the Hamiltonian of the system. However, by designing the unique structure of the superconducting circuit, the ultrastrong-coupling regime can be achieved in a circuit-QED system in which the counter-rotating coupling terms become as important as the rotating terms. Thus, the rotating-wave approximation cannot be used in the ultrastrongly coupled circuit-QED system. Owing to the ultrastrong coupling, this circuit-QED system is described by the standard quantum Rabi model when a superconducting qubit is coupled only to a single resonator mode. In this work, we experimentally study an ultrastrongly coupled circuit-QED system consisting of a four-junction superconducting flux qubit and a muti-mode coplanar-waveguide resonator. The transmission-spectrum measurement and numerical simulations show that the system is in the ultrastrong-coupling regime. By changing the photon number in the resonator, we observe the frequency shift of the flux qubit via the spectroscopic measurement. This frequency shift contains the contributions from not only the rotating-coupling terms but also the counter-rotating terms, which is in good agreement with the theory. The result indicates that this ultrastrongly-coupled quantum system can be used as a good platform to investigate the quantum Rabi model and has potential applications in various aspects of quantum technology, such as quantum simulation, ultrafast quantum gates, entangled-state preparation and protected qubits.

Abstract:In this paper, we employ PCA and t-SNE analyses to gain deeper insights into the behavior of entangled and non-entangled mixing operators within the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) at various depths. We utilize a dataset containing optimized parameters generated for max-cut problems with cyclic and complete configurations. This dataset encompasses the resulting RZ, RX, and RY parameters for QAOA models at different depths (1L, 2L, and 3L) with or without an entanglement stage within the mixing operator. Our findings reveal distinct behaviors when processing the different parameters with PCA and t-SNE. Specifically, most of the entangled QAOA models demonstrate an enhanced capacity to preserve information in the mapping, along with a greater level of correlated information detectable by PCA and t-SNE. Analyzing the overall mapping results, a clear differentiation emerges between entangled and non-entangled models. This distinction is quantified numerically through explained variance in PCA and Kullback–Leibler divergence (post-optimization) in t-SNE. These disparities are also visually evident in the mapping data produced by both methods, with certain entangled QAOA models displaying clustering effects in both visualization techniques.

Abstract:Promising applications of the anisotropic quantum Rabi model (AQRM) in broad parameter ranges are explored, which is realized with superconducting flux qubits simultaneously driven by two-tone time-dependent magnetic fields. Regarding the quantum phase transitions (QPTs), with assistance of fidelity susceptibility, we extract the scaling functions and the critical exponents, with which the universal scaling of the cumulant ratio is captured by rescaling the parameters related to the anisotropy. Moreover, a fixed point of the cumulant ratio is predicted at the critical point of the AQRM with finite anisotropy. In respect of quantum information tasks, the generation of the macroscopic Schrödinger cat states and quantum controlled phase gates are investigated in the degenerate case of the AQRM, whose performance is also investigated by numerical calculation with practical parameters. Therefore, our results pave the way to explore distinct features of the AQRM in circuit QED systems for QPTs, quantum simulations and quantum information processing.

Abstract:We propose a current correlation spectrum approach to probe the quantum behaviors of a nanome-chanical resonator (NAMR). The NAMR is coupled to a double quantum dot (DQD), which acts as a quantum transducer and is further coupled to a quantum-point contact (QPC). By measuring the current correlation spectrum of the QPC, shifts in the DQD energy levels, which depend on the phonon occupation in the NAMR, are determined. Quantum behaviors of the NAMR could, thus, be observed. In particular, the cooling of the NAMR into the quantum regime could be examined. In addition, the effects of the coupling strength between the DQD and the NAMR on these energy shifts are studied. We also investigate the impacts on the current correlation spectrum of the QPC due to the backaction from the charge detector on the DQD.

Abstract:Strong nonlinear interactions between quantized excitations are an important resource for quantum technologies based on bosonic oscillator modes. However, most electromagnetic and mechanical nonlinearities arising from intrinsic material properties are far too weak compared to dissipation in the system to allow for nonlinear effects to be observed on the single-quantum level. To overcome this limitation, electromagnetic resonators in both the optical and microwave frequency regimes have been coupled to other strongly nonlinear quantum systems such as atoms and superconducting qubits, allowing for the demonstration of effects such as photon blockade and coherent quantum protocols using the Kerr effect. Here, we demonstrate the realization of the single-phonon nonlinear regime in a solid-state mechanical system. The single-phonon anharmonicity in our system exceeds the decoherence rate by a factor of 6.8, allowing us to use the lowest two energy levels of the resonator as a mechanical qubit, for which we show initialization, readout, and a complete set of direct single qubit gates. Our work adds another unique capability to a powerful quantum acoustics platform for quantum simulations, sensing, and information processing.

Abstract:The integration of superconducting qubits and resonators in one circuit offers a promising solution for quantum information processing (QIP), which also realizes the on-chip analogue of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), known as circuit QED. In most prototype circuit designs, qubits are active processing elements and resonators are peripherals. As resonators typically have better coherence performance and more accessible energy levels, it is proposed that the entangled qubit-resonator hybrid can be used as a processing element. To achieve such a goal, an accurate measurement of the hybrid is first necessary. Here we demonstrate a joint quantum state tomography (QST) technique to fully characterize an entangled qubit-resonator hybrid. We benchmarked our QST technique by generating and accurately characterizing multiple states, e. g. |gN > + |e(N -1)> where (|g > and |e >) are the ground and excited states of the qubit and (|0 >, ... , |N >) are Fock states of the resonator. We further provided a numerical method to improve the QST efficiency and measured the decoherence dynamics of the bipartite hybrid, witnessing dissipation coming from both the qubit and the N-photon Fock state. As such, the joint QST presents an important step toward actively using the qubit-resonator element for QIP in hybrid quantum devices and for studying circuit QED.

Abstract:The hybrid system of electron spins and resonator photons is an attractive architecture for quantum computing owing to the long coherence times of spins and the promise of long-distance coupling between arbitrary pairs of qubits via photons. For the device to serve as a building block for a quantum processer, it is also necessary to readout the spin qubit state. Here we analyze in detail the measurement process of an electron spin singlet-triplet qubit in quantum dots using a coupled superconducting resonator. We show that the states of the spin singlet-triplet qubit lead to readily observable features in the spectrum of a microwave field through the resonator. These features provide useful information on the hybrid system. Moreover, we discuss the working points which can be implemented with high performance in the current state-of-the-art devices. These results can be used to construct the high fidelity measurement toolbox in the spin-circuit QED system.

Abstract:This study introduces a systematic approach for analyzing strongly correlated systems by adapting the conventional quantum cluster method to a quantum circuit model. We have developed a more concise formula for calculating the cluster's Green's function, requiring only real-number computations on the quantum circuit instead of complex ones. This approach is inherently more suited to quantum circuits, which primarily yield statistical probabilities. As an illustrative example, we explored the Hubbard model on a 2D lattice. The ground state was determined utilizing Xiaohong, a superconducting quantum processor equipped with 66 qubits, supplied by QuantumCTek Co., Ltd. Subsequently, we employed the circuit model with controllable noise to compute the real-time retarded Green's function for the cluster, which is then used to determine the lattice Green's function. We conducted an examination of the band structure in the insulator phase of the lattice system. This preliminary investigation lays the groundwork for exploring a wealth of innovative physics within the field of condensed matter physics.

Abstract:To extract useful information about quantum effects in cold atom experiments, one central task is to identify the intrinsic fluctuations from extrinsic system noises of various kinds. As a data processing method, principal component analysis can decompose fluctuations in experimental data into eigenmodes, and give a chance to separate noises originated from different physical sources. In this paper, we demonstrate for Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices that the principal component analysis can be applied to time-of-flight images to successfully separate and identify noises from different origins of leading contribution, and can help to reduce or even eliminate noises via corresponding data processing procedures. The attribution of noise modes to their physical origins is also confirmed by numerical analysis within a mean-field theory. As the method does not rely on any a priori knowledge of the system properties, it is potentially applicable to the study of other quantum states and quantum critical regions.

Abstract:Data compression can be achieved by reducing the dimensionality of high-dimensional but approximately low-rank datasets, which may in fact be described by the variation of a much smaller number of parameters. It often serves as a preprocessing step to surmount the curse of dimensionality and to gain efficiency, and thus it plays an important role in machine learning and data mining. In this paper, we present a quantum algorithm that compresses an exponentially large high-dimensional but approximately low-rank dataset in quantum parallel, by dimensionality reduction (DR) based on principal component analysis (PCA), the most popular classical DR algorithm. We show that the proposed algorithm achieves exponential speedup over the classical PCA algorithm when the original dataset are projected onto a polylogarithmically low-dimensional space. The compressed dataset can then be further processed to implement other tasks of interest, with significantly less quantum resources. As examples, we apply this algorithm to reduce data dimensionality for two important quantum machine learning algorithms, quantum support vector machine and quantum linear regression for prediction. This work demonstrates that quantum machine learning can be released from the curse of dimensionality to solve problems of practical importance.

Modified Independent Component Analysis for Extracting Eigen-Modes of a Quantum System.

Abstract:In many dynamical probes of a quantum system, quite often multiple eigenmodes are excited. Therefore, the experimental data can be quite messy due to the mixing of different modes, as well as the background noise, despite that each mode manifests itself as a single frequency oscillation. Here we develop an unsupervised machine learning algorithm to extract the frequencies of these oscillations from such measurement data, that is, the eigenenergies of these modes. This method is particularly useful when the measurement time is not long enough to perform the Fourier transformation. Our method is inspired by the independent component analysis method and its application to the cocktail party problem. In that problem, the goal is to recover each voice from detectors that detect signals of many mixed voices, and the principle is to find out signals that possess features and are away from a Gaussian distribution. Instead, our generalization is to find out signals that are close to a single frequency oscillation. We demonstrate the advantage of our method by an example of analyzing the collective mode of cold atoms. We believe this method can find broad applications in analyzing data from dynamical experiments in quantum systems.

Abstract:Entangled qudits, the high-dimensional entangled states, play an important role in the study of quantum information. How to prepare entangled qudits in an efficient and easy-to-operate manner is still a challenge in quantum technology. Here, we demonstrate a method to engineer frequency entangled qudits in a spontaneous parametric downconversion process. The proposal employs an angle-dependent phase-matching condition in a nonlinear crystal, which forms a classical-quantum mapping between the spatial (pump) and spectral (biphotons) degrees of freedom. In particular, the pump profile is separated into several bins in the spatial domain, and thus shapes the down-converted biphotons into discrete frequency modes in the joint spectral space. Our approach provides a feasible and efficient method to prepare a high-dimensional frequency entangled state. As an experimental demonstration, we generate a three-dimensional entangled state by using a homemade variable slit mask.

Abstract:A pure or nearly pure quantum state can be described as a low-rank density matrix, which is a positive semidefinite and unit-trace Hermitian. We consider the problem of recovering such a low-rank density matrix contaminated by sparse components, from a small set of linear measurements. This quantum state estimation task can be formulated as a robust principal component analysis (RPCA) problem subject to positive semidefinite and unit-trace Hermitian constraints. We propose an efficient and fast inexact alternating direction method of multipliers (I-ADMM), in which the subproblems are solved inexactly and hence have closed-form solutions. We prove global convergence of the proposed I-ADMM, and the theoretical result provides a guideline for parameter setting. Numerical experiments show that the proposed I-ADMM can recover state density matrices of 5 qubits on a laptop in 0.69 s, with 6 ×10-4 accuracy (99.38% fidelity) using 30% compressive sensing measurements, which outperforms existing algorithms.

Abstract:Hybrid quantum systems in the ultrastrong, and even more in the deep-strong, coupling regimes can exhibit exotic physical phenomena and promise new applications in quantum technologies. In these nonperturbative regimes, a qubit--resonator system has an entangled quantum vacuum with a nonzero average photon number in the resonator, where the photons are virtual and cannot be directly detected. The vacuum field, however, is able to induce the symmetry breaking of a dispersively coupled probe qubit. We experimentally observe the parity symmetry breaking of an ancillary Xmon artificial atom induced by the field of a lumped-element superconducting resonator deep-strongly coupled with a flux qubit. This result opens a way to experimentally explore the novel quantum-vacuum effects emerging in the deep-strong coupling regime.
