Abstract:Indoctrination of women in Great Britain reached its peak during the Victorian age. The embodiment of this peak is the phenomenon of separate spheres. The Victorian culture categorized women as either Angels in the House or fallen women. These moulds were reflected in the Victorian novel. In contrast to common categorization of women, Thackeray makes an effort in Vanity Fair to represent real women, women who do not fit into prescribed types and definitions. This research attempts to prove that both Becky and Amelia are aware of their inferior position. Both of them do what they consider socially acceptable. Their identities are performed, but Amelia’s performance passes as natural, whereas Becky’s acting is recognized. They succeed to dominate men they get in touch with. While Amelia marries Dobbin, morally the most prominent character of the novel, Becky’s triumph is short-lived. One of the main causes of the moral crises of the Victorian era is society’s attitude toward women. Thackeray suggests that only a radical change in beliefs will lead to their better position.

Abstract:Abstract Despite scholarly recovery of many nineteenth-century women writers, especially those publishing mainly in periodicals, the fiction, travel writing and journalism of Fanny Van de Grift Stevenson (1840–1914) are still neglected. Situating Van de Grift Stevenson in the context of late nineteenth-century US periodical culture, this article considers how many of the author’s periodical writings cross not only geographical but also generic boundaries. Van de Grift Stevenson’s periodical publishing appears in a variety of modes and genres, at times with journalistic material entering her fiction, domestic life including recipes inserted in her journalism, and autobiography glimpsed in both fiction and journalism. The article examines this author’s transatlantic periodical writings in the context of gender and genre, noting the ways in which these categories intersect throughout her authorship. Focusing especially on the author’s regional writing as seen in her non-fiction ‘cookbook articles’ Ramblings of a Housewife and the short story ‘The Warlock’s Shadow’, the article argues that Van de Grift Stevenson’s blending of regional and domestic modes of writing presents a specific interrogation of cultural and geographical identities.

Abstract:National conscience, as a cultural proposition, is a cognitive process that elicits the common code of conduct based on national and cultural identity. With a focus on The Vanity Fair, the essay discusses Rebecca Sharp's act of discarding Dr. Johnson's dictionary. Reading A Dictionary of the English Language as a symbol of national knowledge, culture and even morality, the paper argues for the function of English language in building up the national consciousness of Britain distinct from other nations. In Thackeray's description, British people is unconfident of national language and culture and the public media is featured with hypocrisy and the loss of conscience. In his novel, Thackeray intends to urge his fellow countrymen to adopt a homogenous language and culture with national conscience.

Abstract:This thesis is a study of some elements of feminism in Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd as reflected through Batsheba Everdene's character. The writer of this thesis is curious to find out some elements of feminism in this novel, and she is going to prove that there are some elements of feminism as reflected through the main female character's. In order to support the analysis of this thesis, the writer uses library research to find any related data including the ideal Victorian women, criticisms and feminist theories. She also uses a literary tool that is characterization, in order to have a better understanding of the main female character. She acts as though she were a " male " in the neighborhood. In other words, she tries hard to break the Victorian norms, in that she is welleducated, has a job as a manager of the large farm, she chooses her own husband, and she still has her authority in order to own the property after she gets married. Through the analysis of this thesis, the writer concludes that there are some elements of feminism reflected through Bathsheba Everdene's characters related to education, job or career and marriage.

Reflecting the Male Gaze: Quantifying Female Objectification in 19th and 20th Century Novels

Abstract:Inspired by the concept of the male gaze (Mulvey, 1975) in literature and media studies, this paper proposes a framework for analyzing gender bias in terms of female objectification: the extent to which a text portrays female individuals as objects of visual pleasure. Our framework measures female objectification along two axes. First, we compute an agency bias score that indicates whether male entities are more likely to appear in the text as grammatical agents than female entities. Next, by analyzing the word embedding space induced by a text (Caliskan et al., 2017), we compute an appearance bias score that indicates whether female entities are more closely associated with appearance-related words than male entities. Applying our framework to 19th and 20th century novels reveals evidence of female objectification in literature: we find that novels written from a male perspective systematically objectify female characters, while novels written from a female perspective do not exhibit statistically significant objectification of any gender.

Abstract:In the past decades, scholarly discourse surrounding Northanger Abbey has predominantly favoured a two-part structural division, attributing stylistic disparities to the novel’s extended composition and publication process. However, a more intricate perspective emerges from a division into three stylistically unique sections. This reflects more closely the different stages of Catherine Morland’s development and the impact of her reading habits within varying narrative contexts. While the novel explores the activity of reading books, it also delves into questions of interpreting and comprehending the world. Catherine’s fascination with Gothic novels serves as both a narrative device and a thematic exploration, reflecting her vivid imagination and the tensions between fiction and reality. This essay contends that the trichotomous division offers a more nuanced perspective on the interplay between narrative structure and character evolution. It emphasises the role of reading habits in Catherine’s growth and underscores the transformative potential of literature in shaping perspectives, shedding new light on the novel’s narrative style. To investigate the stylistic changes of Northanger Abbey and their correlation with Catherine Morland’s development, this essay utilises a blend of quantitative stylistic analysis and close reading, highlighting how Austen’s narrative technique reflects and shapes the protagonist’s journey.

Abstract:In language teaching, a study of the corpora gives teachers access to authentic texts and the language of these texts is the language used in real-life communication. Social structures and culture-defined representations of gender influence sexist language or choice of words based on gender bias. Based on the premise that adjectives as ‘describing words’ help define and express human behaviour, attitude and psyche, this research paper tries to explore and compare collocational behaviour of adjectives using four pairs of female and male nouns for marital relationships (bachelor and spinster, bridegroom and bride, husband and wife, and widower and widow) in the British and the Indian contexts. Considering that these four noun pairs sequentially represent the four stages in a marital relationship, this comparative analysis tries to demonstrate with collocational evidence the categorization of social identity and power distribution, the presence of sexism in language usage, and analyzes and interprets the cultural meanings they embody. By examining the gendered adjective-noun collocational frequencies and dispersions in the British National Corpus (BNC) and the Kolhapur Corpus of Indian English (KC), this paper seeks to present certain key perspectives in gender representations in two diverse socio-cultural and historical backgrounds and analyze how gendered language is used by native and non-native speakers.

Abstract:This paper investigates the stylistic and linguistic characteristics of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, a novel of Canadian origin. Employing a corpus-based approach, the researcher aims to analyze its stylistic features in-depth, focusing on specific predetermined categories. Quantitative analysis was facilitated through WordSmith 8.0 software, enabling the identification of keywords in context, which serve as indicators of the linguistic style within the selected corpus. Results indicate that the novel employs simple language and concise sentence structures. Moreover, it demonstrates lexical diversity, encompassing various themes with a higher type-token ratio (TTR), indicative of a diverse vocabulary. Notably, there is a notable prevalence of first-person singular pronouns throughout the text. Regarding content word distribution, verbs are the most frequently utilized, followed by nouns, pronouns, adverbs, and adjectives—additionally, the analysis of keywords aids in uncovering stylistic and linguistic elements embedded within the text.

Abstract:This paper explores the use of linguistic features characteristic of impersonal or personal style in scientific writing by female authors in the eighteenth century. Variables such as discipline, subject-matter and genre are used to assess the ways in which abstract thought and argumentation are expressed by women, given that, even when these works were accepted by the scientific establishment, such modes of expression were more typical of men and men's writing in the context of the Modern Age. Data from different genres and disciplines (History, Philosophy, Astronomy and Life Sciences) will be used in order to obtain more reliable findings.

Abstract:In her last novel “Persuasion” Jane Austen speaks through the voice of Anne Elliot and discusses her feminist ideas rationally in the patriarchal English society. However, she speaks in such a voice that she keeps herself within the 18th century social boundaries. The present paper is an attempt to study the importance of language through Austen’s feminist voice revealing Anne’s gradual maturity from a passive state to an active one when she speaks out loud declaring her feelings through language and knowing that she can become “somebody” only if she gets a voice. Our study aims to show that through Anne’s personage Jane Austen expresses her sympathy with the 18th century feminist movement against the narrow male understanding of female personality.

Abstract:This book explores Virginia Woolf’s afterlives in contemporary biographical novels and drama. It offers an extensive analysis of a wide array of literary productions in which Virginia Woolf appears as a fictional character or a dramatis persona. It examines how Woolf’s physical and psychological features, as well as the values she stood for, are magnified, reinforced or distorted to serve the authors’ specific agendas. Beyond general theoretical issues about this flourishing genre, this study raises specific questions about the literary and cultural relevance of Woolf’s fictional representations. These contemporary narratives inform us about Woolf’s iconicity, but they also mirror our current literary, cultural and political concerns. Based on a close examination of twenty-five works published between 1972 and 2019, the book surveys various portraits of Woolf as a feminist, pacifist, troubled genius, gifted innovative writer, treacherous, competitive sister and tragic, suicidal character, or, on the contrary, as a caricatural comic spirit, inspirational figure and perspicacious amateur sleuth. By resurrecting Virginia Woolf in contemporary biofiction, whether to enhance or debunk stereotypes about the historical figure, the authors studied here contribute to her continuous reinvention. Their diverse fictional portraits constitute a way to reinforce Woolf’s literary status, re-evaluate her work, rejuvenate critical interpretations and augment her cultural capital in the twenty-first century.

Abstract:Virginia Woolf’s novels have historically been regarded as exceptional for their nuanced characterization, particularly of women, and as foundationally influential to women writers after 1945. This chapter investigates the feminist underpinnings of Woolf’s portrayals of female characters in order to trace Woolf’s ongoing legacy in the feminist writing of today’s women authors. Focusing on three archetypes—the Angel, the Artist, and the Girl—the chapter evaluates Woolf’s techniques for female characterization alongside those deployed by women writers including Margaret Atwood, Zadie Smith, Doris Lessing, Claire Messud, Fatima Mernissi, and Jenni Fagan. These comparative readings show the ways in which Woolf’s fiction inspires contemporary women writers to explore relationships between women and gives them a map for creating complex narratives of affiliation to encompass women’s physical, emotional, and intellectual lives.

Abstract:The boundaries of literary genres have long been contested. Stylometric investigations of genres — for example, to identify genre through distant reading — is by no means a new area for research. Computational methods are especially useful for large corpora that have not previously been the subject of many enquiries. This might mean the work of a non-canonical author or work that has not been published. Both are true of the primary text used in this paper: a notebook of anecdotes kept by Frances Eleanor Trollope between January 1879 and March 1890. These anecdotes were written in a prose style but were only intended for the consumption of family. While these methods have been used to analyze unpublished works the aim of this research is often to attribute authorship. This paper uses stylometry to compare Trollopewith her published works of both fiction and non-fiction.

Abstract:It was time of nineteenth century when women writers used to have male pennames for publication. Theme of marriage and society were prevalent in both American and British society. It was a microcosm of its own as women readers used to write about their life through the eyes of women writers. This phenomenon is historical as it stands between Mary Wollstonecraft, arguably the first feminist thinker and Virginia Woolf, arguably the most famous one. Changing times in the second half of nineteenth century was affecting the sensibility and religious clutches on society. It was also affecting notions of patriarchy. Writings of the time ought to reflect that. However, author also presumes a gender of her or his own before writing. That makes her or his gendering of character political and biased. But honest portrayals are important for examining depictions of women in a particular time. This paper aims to analyse two popular writers of the age, a female and a male, to understand the changing notions regarding patriarchy. American novelist Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) have been written important social novels like novel Little Women (1868) and its sequels Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886). Her novels features cast of female characters from the contemporary times. Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, was a British writer writing detective fiction who used to portray his contemporary society. He also uses female characters in her stories. This paper aims to study works of both novelist employing methodologies of close reading and comparative literature to see how depiction of women in nineteenth century America and British fiction changes and what are the reasons for it.

Abstract:The research focuses on the linguistic characteristics of the female characters' speech in the contemporary British television series Why Women Kill and the peculiarities of creating psycholinguistic images of female characters in accordance with the corresponding film archetypes. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that it attempts to analyze the psycholinguistic images of female characters in television series, and thus determines the originality and significance of this study. This research contributes to the enlargement of works dedicated to cinematography characters' language peculiarities revealing the correlation with a particular psychological archetype that presents the topicality of our research. The script is viewed as one of the primary universal methods for unveiling the character's image in an audiovisual text. Based on theories of character archetypes and the use of language in the media, this article examines the replicas and speech patterns of three prominent female characters to determine the linguistic choices used to convey character archetypes. The research is based on the script from the series Why Women Kill (2019) by M. Cherry. The descriptive method, contextual analysis, and method of quantitative calculations have been the appropriate methodological instruments for achieving the purpose of the study. W. Schmidt's (2007) classification serves as the basis for determining the primary psychological characteristics of the characters. The article examines the formation of psycholinguistic images of three female characters from the film archetypes The Nurturer, The Seductive Muse, and The Amazon. Beth Ann Stanton belongs to the film archetype The Nurturer, Simone Grove belongs to the film archetype The Seductive Muse, and Taylor Harding belongs to the film archetype The Amazon, as determined by W. Schmidt's analysis of the peculiarities of the characters' speech and his study of the implication of film archetypes. Beth Anne Stanton's adherence to The Nurturer film archetype is characterized by the high frequency of implications of formal language vocabulary, appellatives, and second-person singular pronouns, as societal recognition of The Nurturer film archetype is crucial. The defining linguistic characteristics of Simone Grove as The Seductive Muse film archetype are the use of hyperbole, the high frequency of first-person singular and second-person pronouns, and the repeated use of interjections, as The Seductive Muse film archetype is characterized by the constant attention of the audience and the demonstration of the importance of her own personality and other characters. Taylor Harding as The Amazon film archetype is characterized by the use of sarcasm, irony, and speech marked by assertiveness and vulgarity, as the Amazon film archetype is always ready to defend its point of view and professionalism, sometimes aggressively, in order to assert dominance.
Voices of Subversion and Narrative Closure in Anne Brontë's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

Abstract:Anne Brontës last novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) has often been read as the portrayal of a wilful female subject whose struggle to claim her identity overturns the Victorian stereotype of women. While this line of reading sheds light on one important theme of the novel, it neglects the fact that Helen's struggle is often accompanied by acts of obedience as a result of the author's ideological ambivalence in handling her heroine. Through analysing two heightened instances of narrative closure, this essay suggests that the radical themes in the novel are undermined by more orthodox views that weaken this radicalism. Firstly, Arthur Huntingdon's moral failure is contrary to the image of Victorian gentlemen, a failure that is seemingly redeemed by Gilbert Markham's triumph as an ideal husband. Secondly, Helen Huntingdon's resistance to Arthur's domination undermines the Victorian gender hierarchy in which women are defined as the object of male control, a resistance that is resolved by her subsequent compromise with that gender inequality, when she opts to return to Arthur and yields herself to the Victorian sense of womanly duty. By tracing the author's methods of narrative closure, this essay reveals that Victorian female writing is constructed, and more importantly, constricted by the dominant social and cultural forces.
Transcending the "Male Code": Implicit Masculine Biases in NLP Contexts

Abstract:Critical scholarship has elevated the problem of gender bias in data sets used to train virtual assistants (VAs). Most work has focused on explicit biases in language, especially against women, girls, femme-identifying people, and genderqueer folk; implicit associations through word embeddings; and limited models of gender and masculinities, especially toxic masculinities, conflation of sex and gender, and a sex/gender binary framing of the masculine as diametric to the feminine. Yet, we must also interrogate how masculinities are "coded" into language and the assumption of "male" as the linguistic default: implicit masculine biases. To this end, we examined two natural language processing (NLP) data sets. We found that when gendered language was present, so were gender biases and especially masculine biases. Moreover, these biases related in nuanced ways to the NLP context. We offer a new dictionary called AVA that covers ambiguous associations between gendered language and the language of VAs.
