Abstract:A solid liquid mixed tunable lens with multilayered structure is proposed. The designed lens utilizes a solid-state elastic polymer, optical liquid, and glass as the optical medium, and adjusts the focus by changing the surface curvature of the elastic polymer. The integrated structure of the tunable lens is presented, as well as detailed descriptions of the lens materials, fabrication, and assembling process. Images captured through the tunable lens under different displacement loads are presented, and the relationship among the displacement load, curvature radius, and effective focal length is analyzed. Additionally, the optical property of the tunable lens is simulated using the ZEMAX software. A change in focal length from 14.8 mm to 30 mm is demonstrated within the tiny 0.12 mm variation of the displacement load. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 2%, and the modulation transfer function reaches 67 line pairs per mm. The solid liquid mixed tunable lens shows the potential for developing a compact, low-aberration, and stable optical system. (C) 2015 Society of PhotoOptical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

Abstract:This work presents the application of an experimental nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixture (1929) in a large aperture lens. The LC material is composed of terphenyl and biphenyl derivatives compounds with an isothiocyanate terminal group and fluorinated lateral substituents. The substitution with a strongly polar isothiocyanate group and an aromatic rigid core provides -electron coupling, providing high birefringence ( at 636 nm and 23 °C) and low viscosity ( = 17.03 mPa s). In addition, it also shows high values of birefringence at near infrared (0.318 at 1550 nm). The synthesis process is simple when comparing materials with high melting temperatures. The excellent properties of this LC mixture are demonstrated in a large aperture LC-tunable lens based on a transmission electrode structure. Thanks to the particular characteristics of this mixture, the optical power is high. The high birefringence makes this LC of specific interest for lenses and optical phase modulators and devices, both in the visible and infrared regions.

Flexible fluidic lens with polymer membrane and multi-flow structure

Abstract:This paper proposed a fluidic tunable lens with polymer membrane and multi-flow structure. The designed lens mainly consists of five optical layers including one polymer membrane, two solid layers and two liquid layers. A series of slime hexagonal holes are drilled in the solid layers and the lens holders, allowing the optical liquid flowing among the different layers. The integrated structure of the fluidic lens was presented, as well as the lens composition and fabrication process. The deformation process of the fluidic lens are measured and analyzed, and the optical property are simulated using Zemax software. Images captured through a prototype lens at various rotating angles presents almost identical patterns and the same image quality, showing good stability to gravity. The lens focal length can be adjusted flexibly from 32.3 mm to 14.3 mm under a tiny injection volume of 86.4 uL. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 3% and relative illumination is above 0.72. The fluidic tunable lens shows the potential to be used in various compact, low cost and stable optical systems.

Abstract:We use a phase modulation method to form tunable lens arrays on liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS). With independent voltage adjustment on each pixel, LCOS generates a high-resolution gradual phase modulation profile, which makes it possible for the lens array to be freely tunable in focal length and other parameters. A tunable lens array is made on LCOS by use of this method, and we provide details of the theoretical analyses and experimental results.

Abstract:Electrically responsive photonic crystals represent one of the most promising intelligent material candidates for technological applications in optoelectronics. In this research, dye-doped polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals（PSCLCs） with negative dielectric anisotropy were fabricated, and mirrorless lasing with an electrically tunable wavelength was successfully achieved. Unlike conventional liquid-crystal lasers, the proposed laser aided in tuning the emission wavelength through controlling the reflection bandwidth based on gradient pitch distribution. The principal advantage of the electrically controlled dye-doped PSCLC laser is that the electric field is applied parallel to the helical axis, which changes the pitch gradient instead of rotating the helix axis, thus keeping the heliconical structure intact during lasing. The broad tuning range（～110 nm） of PSCLC lasers,coupled with their stable emission performance, continuous tunability, and easy fabrication, leads to its numerous potential applications in intelligent optoelectronic devices, such as sensing, medicine, and display.

Abstract:Lenses with tunable focal length play important roles in nature by helping species avoid predators and capture prey. Many practical devices mimic lens concept for imaging, sensing, and detection. This review covers fundamental optics of lenses and its extension to lenses made of liquid crystals (LCs). Three main types of LC lenses are described, namely, lenses with curved surfaces, flat gradient-index lenses and composite lenses. The review discusses advantages of LC lenses over their isotropic counterparts, challenges in their fabrication and control, as well as a variety of potential applications. We also discuss the current challenges associated with nematic LC lenses and their solutions. LC lenses are already having significant impacts on optics and optometry, and these impacts will grow with discovering new LC materials and new lens designs.

Abstract:Abstract Tunable optical lenses are in great demand in modern technologies ranging from augmented and virtual reality to sensing and detection. In this work, electrically tunable microlenses based on a polymer‐stabilized chiral ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal are described. The power of the lens can be quickly (within 5 ms ) varied by ≈500 diopters by ramping an in‐plane electric field from 0 to 2.5 V μm −1 . Importantly, within this relatively low‐amplitude field range, the lens is optically isotropic; thus, its focal length is independent of the polarization of incoming light. This remarkable performance combines the advantages of electrically tuned isotropic lenses and the field‐controlled shape of the lens, which are unique properties of chiral ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals and have no counterpart in other liquid crystals. The achieved lens performance represents a significant step forward as compared to liquid lenses controlled by electrowetting and opens new possibilities in various applications such as biomimetic optics, security printing, and solar energy concentration.

Abstract:In order to accomplish tunable filter with broad continuous tuning range,a design of multiple-stage tunable filters utilizing the electrooptic effect of liquid crystal was developed and the device was made.One liquid crystal cell was inserted into the traditional Lyot filter.The tuning could be achieved by using the electro-birefringence effect of liquid crystal.Four tunable liquid crystal filters were assembled with their integral ratio phase retardations.The simulation showed that the tunable range was 450～550 nm and the spectral resolution was 10 nm.A four-stage tunable liquid crystal filter was made and tested.The results indicated the main performance index was in accord with the design requests.The research results can be applied as reference for the study of broad spectrum multiple-stage tunable filters.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an active spin-selected lens with liquid crystal (LC) in the terahertz (THz) range. The lens is a superposition of two geometric phase lenses with separate centers and conjugated phase profiles. Its digitalized multidirectional LC orientations are realized via a dynamic micro-lithography-based photo-patterning technique and sandwiched by two graphene-electrode-covered silica substrates. The specific lens can separate the focusing spots of incident light with opposite circular polarizations. Its focusing performance from 0.8 to 1.2 THz is characterized using a scanning near-field THz microscope system. The polarization conversion efficiency varies from 32.1% to 70.2% in this band. The spin-selected focusing functions match well with numerical simulations. Such lens exhibits the merit of dynamic functions, low insertion loss and broadband applicability. It may inspire various practical THz apparatuses.

Abstract:Active lenses with focal tunable properties are highly desired in the modern imaging systems from the visible to the microwaves. In this paper, we demonstrate a terahertz (THz) lens with electrically switchable focal length. It is composed of a large-birefringence liquid crystal (LC) layer infiltrating a dielectric metasurface. When the birefringence of LC is tuned with an external bias, the phase shift of a single meta-unit will change. With parameter sweep using the finite-different time-domain (FDTD) simulation method, meta-units with varying geometries are optimized to achieve a focal length switchable metalens. The numerical results show that the focal length can be switched between 8.3 mm and 10.5 mm at bias OFF and ON states, respectively, which is consistent with the design. A feasible fabrication procedure of the lens is further discussed. Such a device can be designed beyond the THz band to the visible or the microwaves, and may be widely applied in integrated imaging systems.

Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. The devices exhibit a quality factor of 16 668, a sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1, and a total tuning range of 25.7 nm. image

Abstract:Overcoming chromatic aberrations is a vital concern in imaging systems in order to facilitate full-color and hyperspectral imaging. By contrast, large dispersion holds opportunities for spectroscopy and tomography. Combining both functions into a single component will significantly enhance its versatility. A strategy is proposed to delicately integrate two lenses with a static resonant phase and a switchable geometric phase separately. The former is a metasurface lens with a linear phase dispersion. The latter is composed of liquid crystals (LCs) with space-variant orientations with a phase profile that is frequency independent. By this means, a broadband achromatic focusing from 0.9 to 1.4 THz is revealed. When a saturated bias is applied on LCs, the geometric phase modulation vanishes, leaving only the resonant phase of the metalens. Correspondingly, the device changes from achromatic to dispersive. Furthermore, a metadeflector with tunable dispersion is demonstrated to verify the universality of the proposed method. Our work may pave a way toward active metaoptics, promoting various imaging applications.

Abstract:Electrically tunable liquid crystal lens with 30 mm diameter is presented based on the refractive Fresnel concept. Relatively large optical power variation range (from - 0.74 to +0.71 Diopters) is demonstrated along with very low root mean square aberrations (≤0.15 µm). Optical characterizations, including with Snellen chart, show that good vision recovery may be obtained with fast response time (under 500 msec) and relatively low haze. The proposed design is very simple and may be fabricated by using single step lithography. Perspectives on its applications are discussed.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are excellent candidates for tunable optical elements due to their large birefringence and continuous tunability by external fields. A dual-frequency liquid crystal lens integrated with Pancharatnam–Berry phase was fabricated via a dynamic photo-patterning technique. The proposed lens exhibited distinctive polarization-dependent characteristics and ultra-high efficiency rates of up to 95%. Via merely alternating the frequency of the applied electric field, the switching time between unfocused and focused states was measured in submilliseconds. This work supplies a new strategy for fast-response, high-efficiency and helicity-dependent lens with merits of easy fabrication and low power consumption.

Abstract:We present an experimental study of an electrically tunable laser based on liquid-crystal elements and analyse theoretically its main working principles. The laser structure includes two polymer-stabilised cholesteric-liquid-crystal slabs that act as polarisation-sensitive reflectors, and a dye-doped nematic layer sandwiched between them. The wavelength of lasing can be changed by modifying the optical retardation of the nematic layer by means of a low-amplitude square wave. For all wavelengths the laser light is circularly polarised with opposite handedness to that of the cholesteric mirrors. Good laser performance has been achieved, with low thresholds and quasi-continuous tuning ranges. The laser threshold varies with the wavelength, and was found to be highly dependent on the spatial location of the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) electrodes, inside or outside the laser resonator. A theoretical account for this effect is given using simulations based on the Berreman 4 × 4 matrix method.

Abstract:A novel astigmatism-tunable micro lens is reported in this paper. The device is based on a thermal-actuated tunable lens. Asymmetric boundary condition is further introduced on silicon conducting ring of lens to invoke asymmetric deformation of polymer lens as well as astigmatic change of PDMS-lens. The astigmatism is easily controlled via driving current. This study demonstrates the astigmatism variation by aspect ratio of anterior focus-spot, which changes from 9.34 to 1.12 while driving current increases from 0mA to 70mA. This astigmatism tuning approach paves the ways of MEMS-based aberration corrector and laser focus-spot shaper.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate an adaptive liquid lens with a tunable field of view (FOV). The proposed liquid lens consists of an actuator and a lens chamber, the annular sheet is just placed on the liquid-liquid (L-L) interface in order to change the curvature and steer the tilt angle of the interface. Different from the conventional FOV adjustable lens combined with a liquid lens and a liquid prism, the proposed lens requires only one L-L interface to achieve the focal length change and FOV deflection. Moreover, the proposed lens reduces aberrations while maintaining high resolution. The experiments show that the optical power range is -27 m-1 to 30 m-1. It can realize the FOV deflection while tuning the focal length, with an angular resolution of 37"05. The proposed lens can be applied to telescopic system and microscopic system.
