Abstract:For an additive polynomial and a positive integer, we define an irreducible smooth representation of a Weil group of a non-archimedean local field. We study several invariants of this representation. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for it to be primitive.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a variety (possibly non-complete or singular) over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $0$. For a prime number $\ell$, let $\rho_\ell$ be the Galois representation on the first $\ell$-adic cohomology of $X$. We show that if $\ell$ varies the image of $\rho_\ell$ is of bounded index in the group of $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points of its Zariski closure. We use this to improve a recent result of Litt about arithmetic representations of geometric fundamental groups. Litt's result says that there exist constants $N = N(X,\ell)$ such that every arithmetic representation $\pi_1(X_{\bar{k}}) \to \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$ that is trivial modulo $\ell^N$ is unipotent. We show that these constants can in fact be chosen independently of $\ell$.
Realizing Galois representations in abelian varieties by specialization

Abstract:We give some positive answers to the following problem: Given a field $K$ and a continuous Galois representation $\rho:G_K \to GL_n(\mathbf{Q})$, construct an abelian variety $J/K$ of small dimension such that $\rho$ is a sub-representation of the natural $G_K$-representation on $J(\bar{K}) \otimes_{\mathbf{Z}} \mathbf{Q}$. We prove that if $K$ is Hilbertian of characteristic different from $2$, then for any sufficiently large integer $g$ (depending on $\rho$) we can find infinitely many absolutely simple $g$-dimensional abelian varieties which realize $\rho$. We outline also a method of twisting a given symmetric construction of curves with many rational points to instead produce curves with closed points of large degree, and in this context we give a unified treatment of constructions of Mestre--Shioda and Liu--Lorenzini. The main results are obtained by applying a natural generalization of Néron's Specialization Theorem.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth, separated, geometrically connected scheme defined over a number field $K$ and $\{\rho_\lambda\}_\lambda$ a system of n-dimensional semisimple $\lambda$-adic representations of the étale fundamental group of $X$ such that for each closed point $x$ of $X$, the specialization $\{\rho_{\lambda,x}\}_\lambda$ is a compatible system of Galois representations under mild local conditions. For almost all $\lambda$, we prove that any type A irreducible subrepresentation of $\rho_\lambda\otimes \bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$ is residually irreducible. When $K$ is totally real or CM, $n\leq 6$, and $\{\rho_\lambda\}_\lambda$ is the compatible system of Galois representations of $K$ attached to a regular algebraic, polarized, cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A}_K)$, for almost all $\lambda$ we prove that $\rho_\lambda\otimes\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$ is (i) irreducible and (ii) residually irreducible if in addition $K=\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:Abstract Let be a prime number, and a finite extension of or of . We consider the group for a positive integer and a central finite‐dimensional division ‐algebra of ‐dimension . For an irreducible smooth complex representation of , inspired by work of R. Howe when , we establish the existence and uniqueness of integers , for partitions of , such that for any small enough compact open subgroup of , the restriction of to is the same as that of the virtual representation , where the sum is over partitions of and is a parabolic subgroup of in the associate class determined by . When is minimal such that , we prove that is positive, equal to the dimension of a generalized Whittaker model of . We elucidate the behavior of under the Jacquet–Langlands correspondence of Badulescu from to . We extend the above result on near identity to a representation of over a field with characteristic not . Arithmetic representations of fundamental groups II: finiteness

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.

Weak abelian direct summands and irreducibility of Galois representations

Abstract:Let $\rho_\ell$ be a semisimple $\ell$-adic representation of a number field $K$ that is unramified almost everywhere. We introduce a new notion called weak abelian direct summands of $\rho_\ell$ and completely characterize them, for example, if the algebraic monodromy of $\rho_\ell$ is connected. If $\rho_\ell$ is in addition $E$-rational for some number field $E$, we prove that the weak abelian direct summands are locally algebraic (and thus de Rham). We also show that the weak abelian parts of a connected semisimple Serre compatible system form again such a system. Using our results on weak abelian direct summands, when $K$ is totally real and $\rho_\ell$ is the three-dimensional $\ell$-adic representation attached to a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic, not necessarily polarizable representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{A}_K)$ together with an isomorphism $\mathbb{C}\simeq \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$, we prove that $\rho_\ell$ is irreducible. We deduce in this case also some $\ell$-adic Hodge theoretic properties of $\rho_\ell$ if $\ell$ belongs to a Dirichlet density one set of primes.

Characteristic polynomials of isometries of even unimodular lattices

Abstract:E. Bayer-Fluckiger gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be realized as the characteristic polynomial of a semisimple isometry of an even unimodular lattice, by describing the local-global obstruction, and the author extended the result. This article presents a systematic way to compute the obstruction. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Salem number of degree $10$ or $18$ to be realized as the dynamical degree of an automorphism of nonprojective K3 surface, in terms of its minimal polynomial.

On local character expansions for principal series representations of general linear groups

Abstract:We obtain two explicit formulas for the full local character expansion of any irreducible representation of a p-adic general linear group in principal blocks. The first, generalizing previous work of the author on the Iwahori-spherical case, expresses the expansion in terms of dimensions of degenerate Whittaker models. The second gives a closed expression in terms of values of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of a suitable permutation group.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ and $F$ be a non-archimedean local field with residue field a proper finite extension of $\mathbb{F}_p$. Let $E$ be an algebraically closed countable field extension of the residue field of $F$. In this short note, we explain how the methods from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1809.10247" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.10247">arXiv:1809.10247</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2210.07281" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07281">arXiv:2210.07281</a> can be used to construct irreducible smooth representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$, $n>1$, over $E$ without a central character.

Abstract:Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime number. We consider the Iwasawa $\lambda$-invariants associated to modular Bloch-Kato Selmer groups, considered over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $g$ be a $p$-ordinary cuspidal newform of weight $2$ and trivial nebentype. We assume that the $\mu$-invariant of $g$ vanishes, and that the image of the residual representation associated to $g$ is suitably large. We show that for any number greater $n$ greater than or equal to the $\lambda$-invariant of $g$, there are infinitely many newforms $f$ that are $p$-congruent to $g$, with $\lambda$-invariant equal to $n$. We also prove quantitative results regarding the levels of such modular forms with prescribed $\lambda$-invariant.

Abstract:Denote by $\mathfrak{o}$ the valuation ring of a non-Archimedean local field with prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ and finite residue field, and let $r\geq 1$ be an integer. We prove that for every smooth affine group scheme $G$ over $\mathbb{Z}$, the dimension of each irreducible representation of $G(\mathfrak{o}/\mathfrak{p}^r)$ is given by one of finitely many polynomials with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}$ evaluated at $q=|\mathfrak{o}/\mathfrak{p}|$, provided that the residue characteristic $p=\mathrm{char} \mathfrak{o}/\mathfrak{p}$ is large and fixed.

This paper extends this parameterization to central extensions of such tori, which arise naturally in the setting of nonlinear covers of reductive groups.

On local intertwining periods

Abstract:We prove the absolute convergence, functional equations and meromorphic continuation of local intertwining periods on parabolically induced representations of finite length for certain symmetric spaces over local fields of characteristic zero, including Galois pairs as well as pairs of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash type. Furthermore, for a general symmetric space we prove a sufficient condition for distinction of an induced representation in terms of distinction of its inducing data. Both results generalize previous results of the first two named authors. In particular, for both we remove a boundedness assumption on the inducing data and for the second we further remove any assumption on the symmetric space. Moreover, when the inducing representation is uniformly bounded, we extend the field of cofficients from p-adic to any local field of characteristic zero. In fact this extension holds for all finite length representations under a natural generic irreducibility assumption for parabolic induction. In the case of p-adic symmetric spaces, combined with the necessary conditions for distinction that follow from the geometric lemma, this provides a necessary and sufficient condition for distinction of representations induced from cuspidal.

On modular representations of inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over a local non-archimedean field

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{F}$ be a local non-archimedean field of residue characteristic $p$ and $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ an algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic $\ell \neq p$. We extend the results of Lapid and Mínguez concerning $\square$-irreducible representations of inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathrm{F})$ to representations over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$. As applications, we compute the Godement-Jacquet $L$-factor for any smooth irreducible representation over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ and show that the local factors of a representation agree with the ones of its $\mathrm{C}$-parameter defined by Kurinczuk and Matringe. Moreover, we reprove that the classification of irreducible representations via multisegments due to Vignéras and Mínguez-Sécherre is indeed exhaustive without using the classification of Ariki and Mathas of simple modules of Hecke algebras. Finally, we characterize the irreducible constituents of certain parabolically induced representations, as was already done by Zelevinsky over $\mathbb{C}$.

Abstract:We define a pro-$p$ Abelian sheaf on a modular curve of a fixed level $N \geq 5$ divisible by a prime number $p \neq 2$. Every $p$-adic representation of $\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ associated to an eigenform is obtained as a quotient of its étale cohomology. For any compact $\mathbb{Z}_p[[1 + N \mathbb{Z}_p]]$-algebra $\Lambda_1$ satisfying certain suitable conditions, we construct a representation of $\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ over $\Lambda_1$ associated to a $\Lambda_1$-adic cuspidal eigenform of finite slope as a scalar extension of a quotient of the étale cohomology.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field with odd characteristic $p$. Let $N$ be a positive integer and $G=Sp_{2N}(F)$. By work of Lomelí on $\gamma$-factors of pairs and converse theorems, a generic supercuspidal representation $\pi$ of $G$ has a transfer to a smooth irreducible representation $\Pi_\pi$ of $GL_{2N+1}(F)$. In turn the Weil-Deligne representation $\Sigma_\pi$ associated to $\Pi_\pi$ by the Langlands correspondence determines a Langlands parameter $\phi_\pi$ for $\pi$. That process produces a Langlands correspondence for generic cuspidal representations of $G$. In this paper we take $\pi$ to be simple in the sense of Gross and Reeder, and from the explicit construction of $\pi$ we describe $\Pi_\pi$ explicitly. The method we use is the same as in our previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2310.20455" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2310.20455">arXiv:2310.20455</a>, where we treated the case where $F$ is a $p$-adic field, and $\pi$ a simple supercuspidal representation of $G=Sp_{2N}(F)$. It relies on a criterion due to Moeglin on the reducibility of representations parabolically induced from $GL_M(F)\times G$ for varying positive integers $M$. We extend this criterion to the case when $F$ has any positive characteristic. The main new feature consists in relating reducibility to $\gamma$-factors for pairs.

On polynomial representations of finite groups

Abstract:By generalizing Frobenius' polynomial method to good partition algebra, we will develop new character theories for a finite group $G$. A uniform defining equations are derived for these kinds of character theories. The new character theories leads to various factorizations of the group determinant. We will show that these new character theories are equivalent to the Frobenius polynomials of the correspondent good partition algebras. In particular, the character table of a finite group $G$ can be replaced by the Frobenius polynomial of $G$ which is a kind of degenerate of the group determinant. As applications, we find a new series of invariants $p_{ijl}$ for a finite group. In particular, a finite simple group is determined by these invariants. As further applications, the degrees of all irreducible characters can also be realized as the solutions of a polynomial of $G$ and we can combine the refined McKay conjecture and part of Galois conjecture of Navarro on degrees of irreducible characters into a new general conjecture.

Abstract:Let $p\geq 7$ be a prime and $n>1$ be a natural number. We show that there exist infinitely many Galois representations $\varrho:Gal(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow GL_{n}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ which are unramified outside $\{p, \infty\}$ with large image. More precisely, the Galois representations constructed have image containing the kernel of the mod-$p^t$ reduction map $SL_n(\mathbb{Z}_p)\rightarrow SL_n(\mathbb{Z}/p^t\mathbb{Z})$, where $t:=8(n^2-n)\left(3+\lfloor log_p(2^n+1)\rfloor\right)+8$. The results are proven via a purely Galois theoretic lifting construction. When $p\equiv 1\mod{4}$, our results are conditional since in this case, we assume a very weak version of Vandiver's conjecture.
