Abstract:Abstract Background Implementation science studies often express interest in “attitudes,” a term borrowed from psychology. In psychology, attitude research has an established methodological and theoretical base, which we briefly summarize here. We then review implementation studies designed to measure attitudes and compare their definitions and methods with those from psychology. Methods A recent review identified 46 studies empirically examining factors associated with implementation. For each of these studies, we evaluated whether authors included attitudes as a construct of interest, and if so, whether and how the construct was defined, measured, and analyzed. Results Most of the articles (29/46 [63%]) mention attitudes as an implementation factor. Six articles include a definition of the construct. Nineteen studies were designed to measure attitudes but lacked clarity in describing how attitudes were measured. Those that explained their measurement approach used methods that differed from one another and from validated methods in social psychology. Few articles described associated analyses or provided results specific to attitudes. Despite the lack of specificity regarding relevant measurement, analysis, and results, the articles often included causal conclusions about the role of attitudes. Conclusions Attitudes may be an important construct to implementation scientists, but studies to date are ambiguous in their definitions of attitudes and inconsistent in the methods used to measure and analyze attitudes. We discuss how implementation studies can apply psychology’s standardized definitions, validated measurement approaches, and causal models that include attitudes. This application of attitude theory and methods could offer implementation research valuable scientific opportunities.

Abstract:Examines research on the relation between attitude and behavior in light of the correspondence between attitudinal and behavioral entities. Such entities are defined by their target, action, context, and time elements. A review of available empirical research supports the contention that strong attitude–behavior relations are obtained only under high correspondence between at least the target and action elements of the attitudinal and behavioral entities. This conclusion is compared with the rather pessimistic assessment of the utility of the attitude concept found in much contemporary social psychological literature. (4½ p ref)

Abstract:Based on a deductive, culturally decentered approach, new items were generated to improve the reliability of the original Social Axioms Survey, which measures individuals' general beliefs about the world. In Study 1, results from 11 countries support the original five-factor structure and achieve higher reliability for the axiom dimensions as measured by the new scale. Moreover, moderate but meaningful associations between axiom and Big-Five personality dimensions were found. Temporal change of social axioms at the culture level was examined and found to be moderate. In Study 2, additional new items were generated for social complexity and fate control, then assessed in Hong Kong and the United States. Reliability was further improved for both dimensions. Additionally, two subfactors of fate control were identified: fate determinism and fate alterability. Fate determinism, but not fate alterability, related positively to neuroticism. Other relationships between axiom and personality dimensions were similar to those reported in Study 1. The short forms of the axiom dimensions were generally reliable and correlated highly with the long forms. This research thus provides a stronger foundation for applying the construct of social axioms around the world.

Abstract:▪ Abstract This survey of attitude theory and research published between 1996 and 1999 covers the conceptualization of attitude, attitude formation and activation, attitude structure and function, and the attitude-behavior relation. Research regarding the expectancy-value model of attitude is considered, as are the roles of accessible beliefs and affective versus cognitive processes in the formation of attitudes. The survey reviews research on attitude strength and its antecedents and consequences, and covers progress made on the assessment of attitudinal ambivalence and its effects. Also considered is research on automatic attitude activation, attitude functions, and the relation of attitudes to broader values. A large number of studies dealt with the relation between attitudes and behavior. Research revealing additional moderators of this relation is reviewed, as are theory and research on the link between intentions and actions. Most work in this context was devoted to issues raised by the theories of reasoned action and planned behavior. The present review highlights the nature of perceived behavioral control, the relative importance of attitudes and subjective norms, the utility of adding more predictors, and the roles of prior behavior and habit.

Abstract:It has been suggested that when judging the distance to a desirable object, motivated distortions of perceived distance occur, and that these distortions can be measured by actions, such as throwing a beanbag. The results of two new experiments suggest that reported variations in beanbag performance may instead depend on instructional effects, such as ones that emphasize proximity rather than accuracy. When the goal was to be closest to the target, underthrowing was observed, whether the target was intrinsically valuable or not. When the goal was to hit the target, however, throwing performance was unbiased.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of many contemporary technologies, such as social media platforms, smart devices, and global logistics systems. At the same time, research on the public acceptance of AI shows that many people feel quite apprehensive about the potential of such technologies—an observation that has been connected to both demographic and sociocultural user variables (e.g., age, previous media exposure). Yet, due to divergent and often ad-hoc measurements of AI-related attitudes, the current body of evidence remains inconclusive. Likewise, it is still unclear if attitudes towards AI are also affected by users' personality traits. In response to these research gaps, we offer a two-fold contribution. First, we present a novel, psychologically informed questionnaire (ATTARI-12) that captures attitudes towards AI as a single construct, independent of specific contexts or applications. Having observed good reliability and validity for our new measure across two studies ( N 1 = 490; N 2 = 150), we examine several personality traits—the Big Five, the Dark Triad, and conspiracy mentality—as potential predictors of AI-related attitudes in a third study ( N 3 = 298). We find that agreeableness and younger age predict a more positive view towards artificially intelligent technology, whereas the susceptibility to conspiracy beliefs connects to a more negative attitude. Our findings are discussed considering potential limitations and future directions for research and practice.

Abstract:The present study examined the reliability and the construct validity of a questionnaire designed to measure the attitudes toward computers in everyday life. A total of 2,050 participants responded to the questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis suggests that attitudes toward computers are composed of three dimensions: sense of benefit, sense of dependence, and sense of harm.

Abstract:The behavioral sciences, including most of psychology, seek to explain and predict behavior with the help of theories and models that involve concepts (e.g., attitudes) that are subsequently translated into measures. Currently, some subdisciplines such as social psychology focus almost exclusively on measures that demand reflection or even introspection when administered to persons. We argue that such a focus hinders progress in explaining behavior. One major reason is that such an exclusive focus on reflections results in common method bias, which then produces spurious relations, or in other words, low discriminant validity. Without the valid measurement of theoretical concepts, theoretical assumptions cannot be tested, and hence, theory development will be hampered. We argue that the use of a greater variety of methods would reduce these problems and would in turn foster theory building. Using a representative sample of N = 472 participants (age: M = 51.0, SD = 17.7; 54% female), we compared the validity of a classical introspective attitude measure (i.e., the New Ecological Paradigm) with that of an alternative attitude measure (i.e., the General Ecological Behavior scale). The latter measure, which was based on self-reported behavior, showed substantially better validity that we argue could aid theory development.

Abstract:We review empirical and conceptual developments over the past four years (1992-1995) on attitudes and persuasion. A voluminous amount of material was produced concerning attitude structure, attitude change, and the consequences of holding attitudes. In the structure area, particular attention is paid to work on attitude accessibility, ambivalence, and the affective versus cognitive bases of attitudes. In persuasion, our review examines research that has focused on high effort cognitive processes (central route), low effort processes (peripheral route), and the multiple roles by which variables can have an impact on attitudes. Special emphasis is given to work on cognitive dissonance and other biases in message processing, and on the multiple processes by which mood influences evaluations. Work on the consequences of attitudes focuses on the impact of attitudes on behavior and social judgments.

Abstract:The questions used in crime surveys (such as the British Crime Survey and Scottish Crime Survey) have been criticized for a number of different reasons, all of which call into question the validity of the questions employed to measure 'fear of crime'. Using data generated by research aimed at improving the conceptualization and measurement of the fear of crime, the current article outlines how assessments regarding the validity of such questions can be built into crime surveys. The procedures are eminently transferable to other topics as required.

Abstract:Science attitude scales can be expected to predict science‐related behavior. But A‐B correspondence can seldom be expected to approach the r value of 1.00. Attitude and behavior covary to the degree that valid measurement and mediating variables are considered: Individual differences of subjects (e.g., high versus low self‐monitoring); the social situation (e.g., direct experience); cognitive factors (e.g., attitude accessibility in memory). Attitude and behavior are reciprocal; that is, attitude can follow behavior. Variables other than attitude, e.g., behavioral intention, previous behavior, and habit, may under some conditions better predict behavior. Also, a viable alternative to attitude testing may be direct appraisal of some science classroom behaviors through ethnomethodology.

Abstract:Teachers' attitude to mathematics is increasingly put forward as a dominant factor in children's attitudes to mathematics. Our intention at the beginning of this study was to produce instruments for teachers to use in probing student attitudes as part of their personal professional research and development. To this end we undertook eight small studies of attitude carried out across the educational phases, which we report on here. Reflecting on them led us to challenge the very construct of attitude. We are also led to challenge the cause-and-effect model underlying much attitudinal research. We now see attitude as at best a complex notion, and we conjecture that perhaps it is not a quality of an individual but rather a construct of an observer's desire to formulate a story to account for observations. The difficulty in making attitudinal research precise, and in testing the validity of attitudinally based conjectures, lies therefore in conceptual and hence methodological issues.

Abstract:In this article, our aim is to introduce the formal validation criterion of specific objectivity to environmental psychologists. Using a convenience sample of 787 respondents, we constructed a set of attitude measures. We found that all five scales represented one attribute. As expected from the Campbell Paradigm, individual attitude can be inferred from verbal acts, such as expressions of appreciation, normative expectations, intentions to engage, and self-reports of past engagement in environmentally protective behaviors. Our findings challenge (a) the common practice in psychology of defining measures by their indicators and (b) the presumption of discriminant validity between typical measures of attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions in research within the planned behavior framework. According to our research, the same validation criterion—specific objectivity—that is applied to the measurement of latent attributes in other empirical sciences (e.g., physics) can be applied to the measurement of attitudes.

Abstract:Examined the relationship between attitudes and behavior in the context of Rokeach's 2-attitude theory of behavior. Data from 81 undergraduates provided correlations between behavior and 3 attitudinal measures: (a) Ao, attitude toward object, (b) As, attitude toward the situation in which the object is encountered, and (c) AoAs, a weighted average of Ao and As that was derived from an adaptation of M. Rokeach and G. Rothman's belief congruence model of cognitive interaction. Supporting all hypotheses, results show AoAs to be a consistently better predictor of behavior than either Ao or As and as good a predictor, or better, than the multiple correlation. Results illustrate the importance of attitude-toward-situation as well as attitude-toward-object as determinants of behavior and suggest that verbally expressed attitudes can predict overt behavior to a considerably better extent than is generally believed. Abstract:This study attempts to re-examine the role of attitude in voluntary information system IS acceptance and usage, which has often been discounted in the previous technology acceptance research. We extend the unidimensional view of attitude into a bidimensional one, because of the simultaneous existence of both positive and negative evaluation towards IS in technology acceptance behaviour. In doing so, attitude construct is divided into two components: satisfaction as the positive attitudinal component and dissatisfaction as the negative attitudinal component. We argue that satisfaction and dissatisfaction will interactively affect technology usage intention. Besides, we explore the predictors of satisfaction and dissatisfaction based on the disconfirmation theory. Empirical results from a longitudinal study on bulletin board system BBS usage confirm the interaction effect of satisfaction and dissatisfaction on usage intention. Moreover, perceived task-related value has a significant effect on satisfaction, while perceived personal value has a significant effect on dissatisfaction. We also discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of our findings.
Environmental Attitude in the 28 Member States of the European Union: Cross-Cultural Comparisons Grounded in Incommensurable Measurement Instruments

Abstract:Cross-cultural research faces a nearly unsurmountable challenge: Psychological attributes must be assessed with formally equivalent (i.e., commensurable) measurement instruments. Otherwise, meaningful comparisons of attributes, such as attitude levels, across societies are impossible. As commensurable attitude measures have been an unattainable goal so far in cross-cultural research, we employ an alternative, item response theory-based approach that explicitly models the incommensurability of measures in its comparison of people’s environmental attitude levels among countries. In our reanalysis of Eurobarometer data (N = 27,998), we found significant differences in people’s environmental attitude in the 28 states of the European Union, with Sweden at the high end and Poland at the low end of the spectrum. Despite the differences between countries though, the within-country variability substantially exceeded the between-country variability. Thus, we conclude that personal influences carry comparatively more weight than societal influences when we aim to promote environmental protection in Europe.

Abstract:Sentiments collected through paper-and-pencil surveys are often arbitrarily classified according to categories imposed by the researcher, such as attitudes, values, and manifestations of organizational culture. The question is, to what extent are such classifications supported by the distinctions that respondents make in their own minds? In this paper, distinctions between categories of sentiments are supported empirically from the results of an employee survey in a large Danish insurance company (n = 2,590). The 120 questions used were classified into attitudes, values, perceptions of organizational practices (for diagnosing organizational cultures), and demographics. Perceptions of organizational cultures were measured using an approach developed by the author and his colleagues in an earlier study across 20 Danish and Dutch organizational units. In the insurance company study, employee attitudes were found to be clearly distinct from employee values. Perceptions of organizational practices were unrelated to values, and only overlapped with attitudes where both dealt with communication. In the latter case, both can be seen as expressions of the organization's communication climate. Other perceptions of organizational practices did not form recognizable clusters at the level of individuals, but only at the level of organizational (sub)units.

Abstract:Diffusion of information in social network has been the focus of intense research in the recent past decades due to its significant impact in shaping public discourse through group/individual influence. Existing research primarily models influence as a binary property of entities: influenced or not influenced. While this is a useful abstraction, it discards the notion of degree of influence, i.e., certain individuals may be influenced "more" than others. We introduce the notion of attitude, which, as described in social psychology, is the degree by which an entity is influenced by the information. Intuitively, attitude captures the number of distinct neighbors of an entity influencing the latter. We present an information diffusion model (AIC model) that quantifies the degree of influence, i.e., attitude of individuals, in a social network. With this model, we formulate and study attitude maximization problem. We prove that the function for computing attitude is monotonic and sub-modular, and the attitude maximization problem is NP-Hard. We present a greedy algorithm for maximization with an approximation guarantee of \((1-1/e)\). In the context of AIC model, we study two problems, with the aim to investigate the scenarios where attaining individuals with high attitude is objectively more important than maximizing the attitude of the entire network. In the first problem, we introduce the notion of actionable attitude; intuitively, individuals with actionable attitude are likely to "act" on their attained attitude. We show that the function for computing actionable attitude, unlike that for computing attitude, is non-submodular and however is approximately submodular. We present approximation algorithm for maximizing actionable attitude in a network. In the second problem, we consider identifying the number of individuals in the network with attitude above a certain value, a threshold. In this context, the function for computing the number of individuals with attitude above a given threshold induced by a seed set is neither submodular nor supermodular. We present heuristics for realizing the solution to the problem. We experimentally evaluated our algorithms and studied empirical properties of the attitude of nodes in network such as spatial and value distribution of high attitude nodes.

Abstract:During the past decade, one topic, perhaps more than any other, has been the focus of considerable research attention in the marketing/advertising literature. That topic is attitude toward the ad (Aad). In recent years, it seems as though nearly every issue of the major marketing and advertising journals contains at least one article that has Aad as its primary focus, or at a minimum, has incorporated a measure of the construct for purposes of investigating Aad's role in ad processing. A current count of published Aad-related articles puts the number well over 100. Clearly, attitude toward the ad has captured the attention of marketing/advertising researchers. With such an emphasis on Aad, it seems appropriate at this point in time to assess our current understanding of the topic, and, as a natural extension, to propose an agenda for future research efforts.
