Abstract:The field of flexible electronics has received tremendous development in recent years, shaping our society from personal life to industry and to national security. Innovation in this field attempts to promote intelligent construction technology towards advanced healthcare monitoring, Internet of Things, robotics, and humanmachine interface. The focus has now shifted from traditional electronic products to flexible electronics. It is clear that flexible electronics used in a wide range of intelligent applications still require further improvement. Researchers have gradually recognised the limitations and challenges associated with flexible electronics, which thus triggered a shift towards ready-to-use wearable devices that can induce sensing processes. As such, advances in this field will inspire promising progress in flexible electronics, and further integrates intelligence, construction process and informatization. This special issue presents a collection of works on flexible electronics including material development, device design and engineering. The applications in flexible electronics will also be introduced along with the pending challenges in science and engineering. Our first exciting contribution is from Dr. GONG et al. [1], which provides insights on the natureinspired designs of flexible electronics. This topical review highlights the progress on material development and its applications. The next original article from Prof. SHAO’s group [2], Nanjing Tech University, P.R. China, reports on a new n-type organic semiconductor via a two-fold condensation reaction, which shows high planarity and an ultralow LUMO energy level. In this Special Issue, new findings on widely-used commercial carbon materials are also reported. WU et al. [3] characterises the synergistic effects on mechano-electronic performance by a combined application of carbon-black and graphene. In another study, based on carbonblack and resorbable poly(ε-caprolactone), ZHONG et al. [4] develops a biocompatible composite as a filmtype sensing element for healthcare strain sensor engineering. In addition to the development of electronic materials, this Special Issue offers a collection of research papers on flexible devices. An interesting contribution from Prof. ZHOU’s group [5], Xiamen University, P.R. China, reports the fabrication of capacitance sensor and describes its application in human acoustic monitoring. Finally, WANG et al. [6] reports a multi-functional motion sensor, which is able to detect the motor rotation speed and angle as well as the linear running direction and the motion state of the sweeping robot.
