Abstract:Lucia Pradella, Globalization and the Critique of Political Economy: New Insights from Marx's Writings (London: Routledge, 2015), 218 pages, $160, hardback. In 2012, the second section of the new historical-critical edition of Marx and Engels's complete writings, the Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA), was finally completed, and all the editions and manuscripts of Capital became available in order to trace Marx's own theoretical development and Engels's editorial works. The remaining three sections are, however, only halfway completed, and it will likely take at least another twenty years before all the work is finished.… What is more, a great number of them are Marx's journal fragments and excerpts, which have not yet been published in any language. In this sense, the distinct importance of continuing the MEGA project is the further publication of these unknown notebooks, which promise to reveal Marx's unfinished undertaking, the critique of political economy.… It is therefore no coincidence that a new trend has emerged in the last few years of scholars studying Marx's notebooks. Works like Kevin Anderson's Marx at the Margins , Heather Brown's Marx on Gender , and my own article on Liebig in Monthly Review have shown the underestimated theoretical dimensions of anti-colonialism, gender, and ecology in Marx's thought. Enlightenment Reason and Modernity: Marx’s Critical Reconstruction

Abstract:Reflection on and criticism of enlightenment reason is an indispensable part of the Enlightenment itself. It is an important counterbalance to the Enlightenment myth and the crisis of modernity, as well as being a major theoretical subject for political philosophy in the age of globalization. This reflection and criticism must be grasped and examined from both the external perspective of socio-historical requirements and the internal perspective of intellectual history. While giving full credit to the achievements of Enlightenment reason and modernity, we need to review their inherent conflicts, reveal the resultant social crisis, and sort out, reflect on and reference postmodernism's denunciation of Enlightenment reason and the crisis of modernity in order to provide a more far-reaching solution to these issues. Marx turned the critique of Enlightenment reason and modernity into a critical reconstruction of the logic of capital and the capitalist mode of production, seeing the resolution of these evils as lying in transcendence of capitalist private ownership. In this way, he brought the critique of Enlightenment reason to a climax and showed modern society a way to more advanced development.

Abstract:This article interrogates Marx’s critique of political economy in the context of the global South and southern epistemologies. It first traces the contradictory roots of a non-Eurocentric conception of history within Adam Smith. Recovering Marx’s silenced sociologies of colonialism in his writings and notebooks, it then shows that Marx incorporated colonialism and imperialism into his analysis of accumulation. The antagonism between wage-labour and capital needs to be understood as a global tendency, encompassing a hierarchy of forms of exploitation and oppression. Marx’s support for the Taiping revolution (1850–1864) played a crucial, albeit often ignored, role in his theorisation. It allowed him to recognise the living potential for anti-colonial struggles and international solidarities, thus breaking with Eurocentric accounts of history. The article concludes that it is crucial to sociology’s global futures that it reconnects with the critique of political economy, and actively learns from the anti-imperialist South.

Abstract:Marx's state theory is not only an important component of historical materialism, but also a necessary part of his political thought. After long years of silence, Marxist state theory revived after WWII and developed anew in the era of globalization. Study of its main ideas, historic fate, further development and new agenda can confirm its explanatory power in the present day and promote its reconstruction and enrichment in the era of globalization. However, some questions in the intellectual structure of Marxism are still open to further study: for instance, the relations between civil society and the state and between the economic foundation and superstructure, the withering away of the state as the end of politics, human emancipation and its conditions, the economic and political forms of the transition from a capitalist to a communist society, and particularly the form of organizational system adopted by the dictatorship of the proletariat, and the ideology of the crucial link of the reproduction of social relations. At the same time, we need to learn from and integrate new social science theories and actively respond to the great changes in political organization and structure brought about by globalization, while actively participating in the great theoretical debates of today.

Abstract:This article surveys the scholarship on the countermovement against the diffusion of capitalism and market economy in the Global South. We identify two streams of analysis in the literature. On the one hand, scholars observe contentious politics instances where the spread of capitalist production relations enables the associational capacity and bargaining power of social classes. On the other hand, there are voluminous studies on contentious politics in the Global South where groups such as peasants, shopkeepers, and urban poor resist the intensification of the market economy. We use Beverly Silver's distinction between Marx-type and Polanyi-type protests, which focuses on how globalization makes and unmakes social groups, to unpack the heterogeneity of the impacts and experiences of globalization. We argue that although Silver's distinction is of great analytical value, there are strong warrants for separating the effects of the market economy from capitalism in studying contentious politics against globalization. Such an analytical strategy (i) expands the scope of the distinction between Marxian and Polanyian contention to social groups other than the working class and (ii) emphasizes that the roots of these struggles lie in the interconnected diffusion of capitalism and market economy.

Abstract:This article addresses the two main roots of postcolonial criticisms of Marx as a Eurocentric thinker, that is, the closely interrelated views that his value theory is restricted to a national level and that his concept of AMP implies the inferiority of Asia. The article first investigates how classical political economy set the stage for a materialist understanding of capitalism and of history, while contradictorily grounding methodological nationalism and Eurocentrism. Drawing on the still partially unpublished Marx’s London Notebooks (1850–53), the article then argues that Marx consistently developed the labour theory of value at the international level. In the summer of 1853, moreover, he put in question Bernier’s theory of Oriental despotism, paying increasing attention to the concrete situation of the population in India and to forms of anti-colonial resistance. By overcoming atomistic and unilinear views of development, the article argues, Marx was able to recognize the material seeds of interdependence and collective power of an emerging world working class.

Abstract:Marx's concept of exploitation, developed in Capital, retains the laissez‐faire premises of classical liberal political economy, whereby capitalist wage labor denotes a contract between formally free, legally equal, employers and workers. Marx, though, inserts the political‐economic conflict between capitalists and workers over surplus value, rendering the concept distinctively 'Marxist'. Both liberal economists and 'free marketeer' politicians had long since distanced themselves, to varying degrees, from the classical laissez‐faire construction, during the debates and campaigns leading to the UK's series of Factory Acts (1802–1853). A dialogue of socioeconomic justice had emerged, driven primarily by public outrage over employment conditions in the textiles industry. In engaging with this dialogue, Marx's critique of capitalist wage labor extends beyond the parameters of his own, political‐economic concept of exploitation, intersecting with other, moral‐economic critiques of capitalist wage labor. This paper examines these points of intersection, going on to evaluate the possibilities of analytical and strategic pluralism. It concludes by assessing the contemporary relevance of Marx's concept of exploitation: to what extent and in what ways might it retain analytical and strategic relevance, with respect to the achievement of socioeconomic justice?

Abstract:Review of Radical Political Economics, Ahead of Print. The concluding chapter of Karl Marx's Capital (volume 1) has received remarkably little scholarly commentary. This is especially surprising as Marx addresses there "the modern theory of colonization" developed by Edward Gibbon Wakefield. But rather than systematically pursue the issue of colonialism, Marx investigates Wakefield's theory in order to illuminate the processes of primitive accumulation (or "originary dispossession") that gave birth to capitalism in Europe. This article suggests directions in which Marx ought to have gone in order to analyze the globalization of capitalism outside of Europe by means of colonialism. In so doing, it proposes the need to recenter bondage, slavery, colonialism, and racism as constitutive elements of capitalism as a global system.JEL Classification: B51, N3, P1

Abstract:The article considers the personal interest of Marx and the Marxist tradition in changing the world. As a rule, and this can be explained by political reasons, Marx and Engels are credited with an identical position on this issue. The author shows that this is a simplification and offers his interpretation based on the primacy of philosophical origins for the development of Marx's ideas. In this case, Marx turns out to be a Hegelian and a critic of Aristotle, while Engels remains an anti-Hegelian. Engels follows Schelling in denying Hegel, and Marx builds his concept on the basis of Hegel's theory of the modern world, while simultaneously challenging the Aristotelian concept of economic value. Engels denies contemporary philosophy, giving priority to science and so-called scientific socialism. Marxist economics, on the other hand, arises as a reaction of Marx to Aristotelian intuitions. The author shows that Marx's philosophy and the Marxist tradition should be distinguished not only because of the various embodiments of the latter, but primarily because of their different philosophical origins. This differentiation of the ideas of Marx himself and the Marxism growing out of Engel's interpretation can be carried out based on the formulation of the question of the relationship of being and thinking in cognition proposed by Parmenides. For Engels, questions of epistemology boil down to the fact that thinking about being and being itself should coincide. Later, this materialistic approach will form the basis of reflection theory. Marx's position is more complicated and can be characterized as idealistic. It is this fundamental discrepancy that determines the difference between the attitude of Marx and the Marxist tradition to the question of the longing to change the world.

Abstract:Marx' and Engels' lifelong though unfinished efforts lie in their understanding and critique of capitalism, which resulted in such classics as Das Kapital, an exemplar for analyzing capitalism via its particular mode of production. Five phases can be distinguished in the historical development of this exemplar: 1) Before 1844: Criticizing Prussian feudalism in light of bourgeois revolution and making the burgerliche Gesellschaft the departure point for study; 2) From 1844 to the spring of 1845: Probing into political economics and revealing the capitalism, through the theory of entfremdete Arbeit, as an inhuman, disintegrated and industry-dominating society; 3) From the spring of 1845 to 1849: Inquiring scientifically the material production, viewing capitalist society from a historical perspective, and considering the class struggle as the means of realizing communism; 4) From 1850 to the end of 1860s: Restudying economics, starting with Das Kapital, making clear, through analyzing the surplus value, the overall control of social life by the capital and establishing a classic exemplar for the understanding of capitalism; 5) developing the theories of changing capitalism and that of anthropological studies in Marx' and Engels' late years.
Private property, labour and the transformation of Political Economy in 1844 Manuscripts

Abstract:This paper intends to show that, from a methodological point of view, the 1844 Manuscripts are an integral part of the Marxist corpus and not an "epistemological break". Marx thematizes the object of Political Economy (1844 Manuscripts) by transforming its discourse. Then, proceeds to the analysis of the capitalist economy (Capital), using the revised categories of Political Economy. However, a necessary condition for such a reading is the non-ignorance of Marx's ontology. Marx reverses the Hegelian dialectics based on the relationship between man and nature. Starting from the social practice (labour), Marx sublates the contradictions between private property and labour, on the level of content, and that between Political Economy and Philosophy (necessity and freedom), on the level of discourse. Their mutual passage renders possible the transfer of the object to reality as a reflection or as a product of thinking (a real thing). Thematizing the political-economic fact, Marx returns to social being, sublating social oppositions too.

Abstract:Since its inception Marxism has largely operated with a narrow definition of the economy which closely resembles capitalism’s own, focusing on wage labor as the pre-eminent example of capitalist relations of labor. A century-long series of challenges from heterodox radical economists, including those based in feminism and anti-colonial theory, has yet to broaden this definition of capitalism, but the fading importance of wage labor and the advent of new forms of precarious labor relations may allow us to break the hold of restrictive ideas of the economy. A larger, more comprehensive concept of economics locates value production and material exploitation in many forms of labor in addition to waged work, and provides a theoretical platform for building solidarity among seemingly disparate movements and constituencies. Marxism can and must incorporate critiques if it is to have continuing relevance. In fact, Marx’s original understanding of capitalism included the concepts of primitive accumulation and the reproduction of labor power, allowing broader concepts of capitalist exploitation to be incorporated into the Marxist worldview. New insights into the essential nature of capitalism and new possibilities for organizing and change may emerge from this paradigm shift.

Abstract:German classical philosophy understood society merely in the sense of the Enlightenment's "state of nature" and hence did not really include modernity in its field of vision.Marx,however,discovered and criticized the society of modernity by separating out capitalist civil society and its institutional structure.By transcending one-dimensional naturalism and humanitarianism,he developed his own view of society.Furthermore,he achieved the reconstruction of the society of modernity through "socialized man(or human society)" and the theoretical construction of this subject in terms of scientific socialism.Marx's discovery,critique and reconstruction of the society of modernity is imbued with political criticism and its materialized form,i.e.critique of political economy.It constitutes a critical dialogue with classical social theory,modern Western social theory and Western Marxist social theory.The financial crisis spreading across the world today is continuously reproducing the horizons of the society of modernity defined by Marx.

Abstract:The 2008 financial crisis has challenged the merits of standard economic theories and sparked surprising references to Marxist analyses. A monetary economy is prone to crises, the interaction of competition with capital–labour relations launches relentless accumulation and over-accumulation crises exacerbate the built-in contradictions of the capitalist mode of production. Nevertheless, until now, these imbalances have not unfolded into its rapid and complete collapse. From the social and political struggles of labour and citizens, the 1929 crisis and finally the Second World War, new configurations emerge for the wage–labour nexus, the form of competition and the monetary and credit regime. These delineate an unprecedented accumulation regime, Fordism. In turn, Fordism enters a structural crisis and a dramatic change in institutionalized compromises favours a still different accumulation regime (finance-led) that evolved from one speculative boom to another till the 2008 American financial collapse. Thus the mobilization of Marx's foundational hypotheses by Régulation theory allows a better understanding than most alternative theories of major contemporary stylized facts: productivity slow-down and social polarization in mature economies, tensions between capitalism and democracy, new industrial capitalisms and limits to globalization.

Abstract:The purpose of this contribution is to ask whether the world of today can be analysed in terms of hegemony. Firstly, the main features of hegemony in the 19th century, during the period between the two wars and in the post-war period up to the 1970s, are illustrated. Secondly, the elements that allow us to speak, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, of a “passive revolution” are described. And finally, the model known as Neoliberalism is compared to these notions. The conclusion is that, though much more restricted in its ambitions, Neoliberalism can ultimately be said “hegemonic” because it tries to articulate the main elements of the hegemonic discourse, despite the fact that the terrain has changed: no longer the national State but the international field of the new “cosmopolitical” bourgeoisie.
