Abstract:Trade between China and foreign countries is increasingly frequent. As the medium of communication, business letters are playing a more and more important role in trading. It is easy to find that vague language is widely used in business letters. The successful use of vague language requires the recipient to be able to infer the writer’s intention correctly. This paper takes business letters collected online and offline as corpus, and will analyze the vague language from two aspects, that is, lexical aspect and syntactic aspect. Based on the analysis finally summarize the three main pragmatic functions of vague language in business letters, namely intent expression, self-protection and politeness.

Abstract:Business negotiation is a complex process of communication. It is generally believed that, using precise language is encouraged for fear of causing misunderstanding and inconvenience in business negotiation. However, from this point of view, it ignores a fact that vagueness is an inherent property of human language. Since the fuzzy theory was put forward in the 1960s, scholars have made much systematic researches on vague language from various perspectives only to find that the initial study on semantics can not thoroughly explain the linguistic phenomenon. So they preferred to a comprehensive and profound analysis from the perspective of pragmatics. Gradually, the pragmatic value and significance has been reflected. As a matter of fact, in business negotiation, using vague language has been regarded as a kind of frequently-used and effective negotiation strategy to achieve certain communicative purpose. As one of the pragmatic strategies in business negotiation, vague language is of great importance which should be highly expected. Therefore, the author hopes that the present study may be of some significance in enriching the researches on vague language. Meanwhile, the study can draw some inspiration to negotiators and some reference to business English teaching. Because the appropriate use of vagueness can help negotiators to communicate smoothly and achieve their goals successfully.

Abstract:in the environment of economic globalization, business negotiation becomes more and more frequent than ever. International business negotiation has a significant role in international business trade. There are many factors that can affect the negotiation, including language, culture, negotiators, and negotiation strategies. Language as an important tool plays a great role in the negotiation strategies. It is commonly held that precise language should be used in business negotiations in order to avoid misunderstanding. However, people ignore the fact that language itself is vague in essence. Negotiators unavoidably use vague language in business negotiations, for vague language can be used as a kind of politeness strategy. Appropriate use of vague language will make the negotiation go smoothly, and avoid the conflict of business negotiation so as to achieve the purpose of cooperation.

Abstract:Business English Writing is a skill of cross-cultural communication.While writing,some people often think and express according to Chinese business culture and pragmatic rules,resulting in different-degree pragmatic errors and influencing normal international business English activities.Having contrasted and analyzed some business English pragmatic errors from the angle of Chinese and English culture,this paper holds that writing teaching of business English letters can not be separated from business English.Only the students learn to both the skill of expressing English and the cultural connotation and pragmatic rules of business English can they be qualified for the communication of cross-cultural business English.

Abstract:With the globalization of the economy, the fuzzy language in business English negotiations is widely used. The motivation for negotiators to use fuzzy language is not to hide information, but to convey information more clearly. This article attempts to divide business negotiations into three stages: the beginning, the process, and the end. With fuzzy language in business negotiation as a corpus, this paper studies how people adapt to different contextual factors to regulate fuzzy language in the process of business English negotiations under the guidance of relevance theory so as to achieve the optimal contextual effect with the minimum effort.

Abstract:With the rapid developments of science and technology, it appears that the best way to get much information is to appreciate some news items, because they are objectively facts and data that are easy for us to comprehend. However, if there is no vague language in newspapers, the reliability and veracity will be reduced to the degree, and the news items will not be trust-worthy at all. So this research paper aims to analyze certain samples selected from some English newspapers by means of Grice’s Cooperative Principle so as to demonstrate that vague language can effectively stand out the accuracy of the English newspapers. Consequently, the paper reveals that the vague language helps and strengthens the artistic effects of the news items which cannot be expressed directly by the exact number or detailed information in the English newspapers. In addition, all the readers may benefit from this research paper and have the deep appreciations of the vagueness as well.

Abstract:In this work, focusing on pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication, taking 5 business English majors as respondents, and using a case study of five mock questions for cross-cultural communication scenarios, to explore the pragmatic failure between these respondents. Pragmatic failure can be divided into pragmalinguistic faliure and sociopragmatic failure. Although respondents master the basic knowledge of cross-cultural, it’s inevitable for them to use the Chinese way of thinking when interacting with foreigners, so that they are prone to have pragmatic failures. To avoid business English majors having the pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication and improve their cross-cultural pragmatic competence, it needs both students and teachers endeavor to do.

Abstract:There are significant differences between Chinese and Western cultures, particularly in terms of communication styles. Westerners tend to be more direct in their way of speaking, often expressing their intentions in a straightforward manner. In contrast, Chinese people, influenced by their traditional culture, tend to speak in a more indirect and roundabout way. They are accustomed to expressing their ideas and purposes in a euphemistic manner. Chinese speakers typically begin with a prelude, using indirect language to convey their true intentions. They then gradually transition to the main topic, unraveling the mystery step by step. This roundabout way of speaking is why euphemisms are commonly used in Chinese communication. The use of euphemisms is preferred by people from various backgrounds for several reasons. Euphemisms allow individuals to avoid the bluntness of direct expression, creating a more comforting atmosphere for communication. They also take into consideration the feelings and emotions of the listener, maintaining the dignity of all parties involved in the conversation. Furthermore, the use of euphemisms contributes to enhancing the quality and efficiency of communication. By exploring the pragmatic function of euphemisms, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the underlying meanings behind the words. This understanding allows for the mastery of appropriate communication skills and facilitates effective communication. In this article, the author will analyze the pragmatic meaning of euphemisms from three perspectives: the avoidance function, the politeness function, and the concealment function. This analysis will be supplemented with specific cases to reveal the pragmatic significance of euphemisms and enhance the readers’ comprehension of their usage.

Abstract:Business English is an important part of business negotiation. From the perspective of cultural differences in various countries, the pragmatic failure in the negotiation process is inevitable. This paper introduces the manifestation pattern of pragmatic failure in English, and establishes a hierarchical structure by the use of AHP, of which the target layer is the most prone areas of pragmatic failure; the criteria layer is the fuzzy words, people’s names, tense and mood; the scheme layer is the food culture, traditional culture and etiquette culture, and also evaluates the most prone areas of pragmatic failure in these three aspects. The results show that, the probability of pragmatic failure for the food culture in Business English is the highest, followed by the etiquette culture. Under the premise of combination with the actual situation, this paper analyzes the rationality of the model.

A Contrastive Pragmatic Analysis of Request Strategies in Cross-cultural Communication: A Case Study of English Business Correspondences Written by Chinese and American Businessmen

Abstract:Request is one of speech acts that widely used in our daily communication, which is closely associated with the speakers’ own social-cultural background and psychological factors. Based on Brown Levinson’s face concept and Gu’s politeness theory, this paper makes a contrastive analysis of forty e-mail business correspondences written by Chinese and Americans in foreign trade, conducts a comparative analysis of request strategies in terms of cross-cultural differences, and carries out an investigation into the relationship between request and social distance, level of difficulty and self-concept. It is indicated that, Sino-US businessmen have their own social-cultural values and power distance affects the choice of the polite request. Chinese businessmen prefer euphemism with their verbal behaviors guided by politeness principle; while Americans use direct or indirect speech acts in accordance with different situations.

Abstract:Under the promotion of economic globalization, China's trade with other countries has also reached a historical peak. Business English letter as a medium to convey business information, its role should not be underestimated. A suitable English business letter can not only establish a good corporate image, but also promote the success of cooperation. Politeness principle is one of the principles that must be observed when writing business English letters. It is embodied in all kinds of letters. When people need to write specific business English letters, they must choose proper politeness principles according to business type and background. This paper analyzes different transmitting ways of positive information and negative information in English business letters and the embodiment of politeness principle. This study also discusses the use of politeness principle and its influencing factors in different contexts. Based on Leach's politeness principle, this paper makes a detailed analysis of different English business letters and probes into the specific use of politeness principle in different types of letters.This study applies the method from special to general, from point to surface to analyze, from analyzing an English business letter to a class of business English letters, and finds that the politeness principle has its corresponding embodiment in both positive and negative information transmission.

Abstract:Pragmatic ambivalence refers to a linguistic phenomenon in which the communicator uses vague or ambiguous words to convey the illocutionary force to the other party in a specific context. It is an indispensable communicative strategy for successful communication in daily communication activities. Relevance theory can explain pragmatic ambivalence from three aspects: intentional relevance, contextual relevance and relevance reasoning. Therefore, relevance theory has strong explanatory power and applicability for pragmatic ambivalence as a communicative strategy. Using relevance theory to study pragmatic ambivalence is conducive to people’s further understanding of pragmatic ambivalence as a linguistic phenomenon, and has a very positive significance for the research and development of ambivalence in pragmatics.
