Donkey Pronouns in Child Mandarin: Insights into the ∃/∀ Dichotomy

Abstract:Donkey pronouns and plural definites show similarities in their semantic interpretation. The parallels between the two elements seem to suggest a unified analysis. Studies of children’s understanding of plural definites show that children initially interpret plural definites existentially rather than universally. The findings invite us to ask whether children also exhibit a preference for interpreting donkey pronouns existentially. Two experiments were conducted to compare children’ and adults’ interpretation of donkey pronouns in conditional and relative- clause donkey sentences. The results of Experiment 1 show that children preferred the ∃-reading, whereas adults entertained the ∀-reading for both types of donkey sentences in upward- entailing contexts. Experiment 2 examined whether monotonicity influences the interpretation of donkey pronouns by creating a downward-entailing context. The findings were that in a downward-entailing context both children and adults preferred the ∃-reading. The findings led us to propose that the ∃-reading is perhaps the basic semantics of donkey pronouns while the ∀-reading is derived, and we suggest that the derivational path is bridged by free choice strengthening. The findings were then discussed in relation to the analysis of homogeneity and plural predication by Bar-Lev (2020).
Children’s Interpretation of Ambiguous Wh-Adjuncts in Mandarin Chinese

Abstract:The paper reports two studies investigating children’s acquisition of the wh-adjunct zenme in Mandarin. Unlike other Mandarin wh-words that correspond to a single meaning, zenme can be used to question either the manner or the cause of an event. Study 1 explored whether children understand that zenme is ambiguous between a causal and a manner reading. Study 2 examined whether they can use syntactic cues to disambiguate the two readings. The findings show that children as young as 4 years of age access both the manner and the causal reading, but they prefer the former over the latter. Children exhibit a developmental trajectory when acquiring the mapping relations between the syntactic positions of zenme and its corresponding semantic interpretations: 5-year-olds can use syntactic cues to disambiguate the two readings; 3-year-olds, however, are still in the stage of working out how the syntactic positions are mapped onto the relevant semantic interpretations; the critical change occurs at around 4 years of age. The implications of the findings were then discussed in relation to the two major competing theories of child language acquisition.

Abstract:Relations between noun modifiers or adnonimals and their head nouns, along with their distribution features, differentiate the stylistic features among languages, and distinguish text genres in a given language. Following a systematic and comprehensive description of adnominal constructions in modern Chinese, this paper explores their rank-frequency distribution properties against three models: the original Zipf’s law, the Zipf-Alekseev law and the Popescu-Altmann-Köhler (PAK) function, with acceptable result for the first and good results for the latter two. The PAK function as a function for stratified texts works well. The research findings validate the categorization in the paper and further prove that adnominals in modern Chinese are normal language units.

Abstract:This research used the Modern Chinese Research Corpus System constructed by Beijing Language and Culture University as the corpus source, and analyzed the pragmatic functions of Modern Chinese adverbs “zhen”, “zhenshi” and “zhende” which are located before the predicate and are used as sentence adverbial. The results show that these adverbs have similarities and differences in pragmatic functions. The adverb “zhen” has four pragmatic functions: one is to confirm authenticity, the other is to express subjective evaluation, the third is to express a high degree of authenticity, and the fourth is to make hypotheses. The adverb “zhenshi” has only one pragmatic function, that is, the subjective evaluation function. The adverb “zhende” has two pragmatic functions: one is to confirm authenticity, and the other is to express subjective evaluation. The adverb “zhenshi” and “zhende” can appear together with the degree adverbs “tai” and “hen”, but the adverb “zhen” cannot appear with the degree adverbs. The adverb “zhen” and the adverb “zhende” can be replaced with each other, and the meaning of the sentence remains unchanged after the replacement.

Abstract:Within the framework of labeling theory of generative grammar and Distributed Morphology, this article provides a syntactic analysis of Chinese locative preposition phrases, and argues that both monosyllabic and disyllabic locative words are lexical words which share the same root. Monosyllabic and disyllabic locative preposition phrases share the same syntactic structure. In the derivation, the root of the locative word merges with the category-assigning morpheme n providing the label n, and n merges with the DP indicating the ground providing the label nP, and then the nP merges with the preposition p providing the label pP. Monosyllabic locative forms are divided into locative suffixes and locative nouns. Monosyllabic locative nouns cannot occur independently in some environments due to a phonological rule for SOME (not all) Modern Chinese words, such as wa ‘sock’, shi ‘stone’, bei ‘quilt’, etc. In the same vein, double preposition adjacency phrases in English, e.g., from above the dam are analyzed. This article also presents syntactic structures of locative preposition phrases in English and Japanese. All the structures proposed in this article do not contain ad hoc conditions and unnecessary movements and have strong explanatory power.
Pragmatic Functions of English Borrowings in Chinese

Abstract:Although the use of English borrowings in Chinese is not uncommon, there are still few studies having explored the pragmatic dimension of these borrowings. Besides, few of the previous studies adopt an onomasiological approach to study borrowings. Thus, this study aims to investigate the pragmatic functions of English borrowings by comparing English borrowings with their native equivalents in line with the onomasiological approach. To this end, the study collects data from Weibo and divides the English borrowings occurring in the hot topics on Weibo into two types based on the existence of native equivalents, namely, catachrestic borrowings and non-catachrestic borrowings. It is revealed in the study that catachrestic borrowings provide a stereotypical interpretation of a concept that has not been lexicalized in Chinese and primarily serve the function of filling lexical gaps while non-catachrestic borrowings can create special pragmatic effects as marked choices in contrast to their native equivalents. While drawing the distinction between catachrestic and non-catachrestic borrowings helps shed light on their different functions, this study argues that the distinction is dynamic and context-dependent as the pragmatic functions of borrowings are conditioned by contexts and susceptible to change. By analyzing borrowings from the pragmatic dimension, this study not only demonstrates the importance of pragmatic functions in people’s adoption of borrowings but also confirms the applicability and effectiveness of an onomasiological approach to borrowing.

Abstract:The paper aims to,on the basis of dependency grammar,investigate how Chinese words are used in texts of different styles to fulfill syntactic function in corpora.We use two dependency corpora —XINWENLIANBO and SHIHUASHISHUO— as the samples of written Chinese and spoken Chinese,and two smaller dependency corpora,XJ-K and XJ-S,as supplements.The results show that spoken Chinese and written Chinese show considerable difference in the word classes that are used to fulfill certain syntactic function.To be specific,most subjects are nouns in written Chinese,while pronouns in spoken Chinese.In addition,in spoken Chinese,many word classes can serve as attributives,and yet it is overwhelmingly nouns that serve as attributives in written Chinese.
How interaction molds semantics: The mood functions of Chinese "sum-up" adverbs

Abstract:"Hezhe" (), "ganqing" (), and "nao le bantian" () are common mood expressions in modern Chinese which have a common function of summarizing the information before (so called 'sum-up') as well as similar pragmatic functions. Study on these mood adverbs could reveal how the interactional mechanism molds the original semantic meanings of mood words and leads to new pragmatic functions. Five verbal corpora are applied to collect the real materials of usage containing the above three mood adverbs. Functional analysis and data statistics have been carried out to categorize the pragmatic functions of these words, calculate their distributions, and reconstruct their evolutional approach through an interactional perspective. We have found a core theoretical viewpoint that the similar functions of the three words emerged through the same pragmatic mechanism called "violation". These functions are: (1) "unexpectation" from the violation of psychological expectation; (2) "criticism" from the violation of universal principles; (3) "humor" from the violation of communicative principles. A statistic work of several corpora showed that these functions of the above three words appear broadly in verbal materials, with differences in their proportions according to the communication types and genres. In Chinese teaching to speakers of other languages, more attention should be paid to these words stemming from dialects, especially during intermediate and advanced levels.

Abstract:This paper examines the phenomenon of pronominal indirect anaphora in natural Chinese discourse. The findings are as follows: 1) Not only can nominal phrases serve as indirect anaphors,but pronouns can do so as well. 2) Antecedent-triggers can be both nominal and non-nominal. 3) Indirect referents can be classified into both specific and non-specific ones,of which non-specific ones belong to certain social groups,not people in general. 4) There are four ways to identify indirect referents,namely,mutual encyclopedic knowledge,mutual personal knowledge,mutual situational knowledge,and mutual textual knowledge.

Abstract:This paper analyses more than 13000 nouns in contemporary Chinese and investigates their synergetic properties on the basis of word polysemy. HowNet is used in this paper to measure the word polysemy and it proves to be an effective approach. Statistical analysis of the data indicates that the polysemy of nouns abides by the modified Zipf-Alekseev distribution. The results of function fitting with Altmann Fitter show that word polysemy is somewhat related to some linguistic variables including word length, word frequency and polytexuality, which means that each variables in the subsystem of lexicon is still synergetic and Kohler's lexical model proves to be effective for Chinese nouns.

Abstract:Nominal modification works to describe and restrict noun phrases, making the information delivery more vivid and precise. In English, the communicative functions of different modification patterns of head-nouns have been studied in a lot of corpus-based investigations of the written and the spoken registers, but few corpus-based register studies have been ever conducted in Chinese. This research takes the initiative attempt to conduct a corpus-based study on Chinese modification patterns across registers. A one-million-word corpus including both written and spoken Chinese is first built and all the modification patterns of noun phrases are extracted in Chunker, a self-developed colligation query and analysis tool. Through classification of modification patterns and statistical processing, the study displays the distributions of simple and complex modification patterns and the relationship between the frequency of modification patterns and the information density across registers and discusses the functional implication of such distributions and relationship under the guidance of Biber's register theory.

Abstract:Nonarbitrariness is the antithesis of linguistic arbitrariness and it mainly consists of motivation and iconicity.As an important principle of language,nonarbitrariness manifests itself in various levels of language system.As far as language use is concerned,nonarbitrariness can provide a new perspective for the explanation of it in terms of motivation and iconicity.Upon constructing a theoretical framework,some typical examples of pragmatic use are analyzed and the findings demonstrate that nonarbitrariness is not only adequate in explaining some arbitrary phenomena of language use but also effective in explicitness and simplicity of doing so.

Abstract:This paper aims to make a contribution to the study of the nature of syntactic categories by analysing a single element in a single language, namely the marker -lao in Yixing Chinese. Although this marker has previously been analysed as an adjectivaliser ( Hu and Perry 2018 ), we show that it has a much broader range of uses. We suggest that the bulk of cases can be captured in a unified way by supposing that the marker in question displays a type of possessive semantics (which we label possession-as-attribute ), which is defined by delineating a kind (in the sense of e.g. Carlson 1977 ; Chierchia 1998 ), with similar semantics being expressed by adjectival elements in languages such as English. It is observed, however, that this meaning can emerge in the absence of the marker -lao , and that -lao can, in a restricted set of cases, surface in the absence of this meaning, and we suggest that these facts are attributable to the diachronic development of the marker and can be captured synchronically by making use of late-insertion mechanisms for phonological and semantic features. We propose that the case of -lao provides a suggestive argument for a substance-free approach to syntactic features, whereby syntactic features are not inherently specified for interface interpretations. Other cross-linguistic implications of our analysis are noted, in particular for the representation of adjectives.
