Abstract:Background: T1 relaxation time is a potential magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) biomarker for fibrosis and inflammation of the solid abdominal organs. However, normal T1 relaxation times of the solid abdominal organs have not been defined for children. Objective: The purpose of this study was to measure T1 relaxation times of the liver, pancreas and spleen in healthy children. Materials and methods: This was an institutional review board-approved study of a convenience sample of prospectively recruited, healthy children ages 7 to 17 years undergoing research abdominal MRI (1.5 or 3 T) as part of a larger research study between February 2018 and October 2018. For the current study, T1 mapping was performed with a Modified Look-Locker sequence covering the upper abdomen. A single reviewer placed freehand regions of interest on the T1 parametric maps in the liver, pancreas and spleen, inclusive of as much parenchyma as possible. Student's t-tests and linear regression were used to compare T1 values by age and gender. Results: Thirty-two participants were included (16 female:16 male; mean age: 12.2±3.1 years; n=16 at 1.5 T). Median T1 relaxation times (ms) per organ were liver: 581±64 (1.5 T), 783±88 (3 T); pancreas: 576±55 (1.5 T), 730±30 (3 T), and spleen: 1,172±71 (1.5 T), 1,356±87 (3 T). T1 values were not statistically significantly different between males and females. At both 1.5 and 3 T field strengths, linear regression showed no significant association between age and T1 values for the liver, pancreas and spleen. Conclusion: We report normal T1 relaxation times for the liver, pancreas and spleen at 1.5 and 3 T in a cohort of healthy children.

Abstract:By exploiting different tissues' characteristic T1 relaxation times, T1-weighted images help distinguish normal and abnormal tissues, aiding assessment of diffuse and local pathologies. However, such images do not provide quantitative T1 values. Advances in abdominal MRI techniques have enabled measurement of abdominal organs' T1 relaxation times, which can be used to create color-coded quantitative maps. T1 mapping is sensitive to tissue microenvironments including inflammation and fibrosis and has received substantial interest for noninvasive imaging of abdominal organ pathology. In particular, quantitative mapping provides a powerful tool for evaluation of diffuse disease by making apparent changes in T1 occurring across organs that may otherwise be difficult to identify. Quantitative measurement also facilitates sensitive monitoring of longitudinal T1 changes. Increased T1 in liver helps to predict parenchymal fibro-inflammation, in pancreas is associated with reduced exocrine function from chronic or autoimmune pancreatitis, and in kidney is associated with impaired renal function and aids diagnosis of chronic kidney disease. In this review, we describe the acquisition, postprocessing, and analysis of T1 maps in the abdomen and explore applications in liver, spleen, pancreas, and kidney. We highlight practical aspects of implementation and standardization, technical pitfalls and confounding factors, and areas of likely greatest clinical impact.

Abstract:Purpose: To develop a 3D multitasking multi-echo (MT-ME) technique for the comprehensive characterization of liver tissues with 5-min free-breathing acquisition; whole-liver coverage; a spatial resolution of 1.5 x 1.5 x 6 mm(3); and simultaneous quantification of T-1, water-specific T-1 (T-1w), proton density fat fraction (PDFF), and R-2*. Methods: Six-echo bipolar spoiled gradient echo readouts following inversion recovery preparation was performed to generate T-1, water/fat, and R-2* contrast. MR multitasking was used to reconstruct the MT-ME images with 3 spatial dimensions: 1 T-1 recovery dimension, 1 multi-echo dimension, and 1 respiratory dimension. A basis function-based approach was developed for T-1w quantification, followed by the estimation of R-2* and T-1-corrected PDFF. The intrasession repeatability and agreement against references of MT-ME measurements were tested on a phantom and 15 clinically healthy subjects. In addition, 4 patients with confirmed liver diseases were recruited, and the agreement between MT-ME measurements and references was assessed. Results: MT-ME produced high-quality, coregistered T-1, T-1w, PDFF, and R-2* maps with good intrasession repeatability and substantial agreement with references on phantom and human studies. The intra-class coefficients of T-1, T-1w, PDFF, and R-2* from the repeat MT-ME measurements on clinically healthy subjects were 0.989, 0.990, 0.999, and 0.988, respectively. The intra-class coefficients of T-1, PDFF, and in healthy subjects and 0.980, 0.999, and 0.998 in patients. The T-1w was independent to PDFF (R = -0.029, P = .904). Conclusion: The proposed MT-ME technique quantifies T-1, T-1w, PDFF, and R-2* simultaneously and is clinically promising for the comprehensive characterization of liver tissue properties.
T1 signal intensity ratio correlation with T1 mapping in pediatric pancreatitis

Abstract:Purpose: Our primary purpose was to understand the correlation between pancreas T1-weighted signal intensity ratio (SIR) and T1 relaxation time in children. We also sought to characterize differences in T1 SIR between children without and with pancreatitis. Methods: Retrospective study of patients < 18-years-old. SIR-pancreas:spleen (SIR-PS) and SIR-pancreas:paraspinal muscle (SIR-PM) were generated from T1-weighted gradient recalled echo images. Subdivided by field strength, T1 SIR was correlated (Spearman's) with T1 relaxation time. Results: 220 participants were included, 144 imaged at 1.5T (mean: 11.4 ± 4.2 years) and 76 imaged at 3T (mean: 10.9 ± 4.5 years). At 1.5T, SIR-PS (rho=-0.62, 95% CI: -0.71 to -0.51, p < 0.0001) and SIR-PM (rho=-0.57, 95% CI: -0.67 to -0.45, p < 0.0001) moderately negatively correlated with T1 relaxation time. At 3T, correlations between T1 SIR and T1 relaxation time were moderate (rho=-0.40 to -0.43, p ≤ 0.0003). SIR-PS was significantly different between patient groups at 1.5T (p < 0.0001) with pairwise differences between: normal vs. acute on chronic pancreatitis (1.52 vs. 1.13; p < 0.0001). SIR-PM was also significantly different between groups at 1.5T (p < 0.0001) with differences between: normal vs. acute pancreatitis (1.65 vs. 1.40; p = 0.0006), normal vs. acute on chronic pancreatitis (1.65 vs. 1.18; p < 0.0001), and normal vs. chronic pancreatitis (1.65 vs. 1.52; p = 0.0066). A SIR-PS cut-off of ≤ 1.31 had 44% sensitivity and 95% specificity and SIR-PM cut-off of ≤ 1.53 had 69% sensitivity and 70% specificity for pancreatitis. At 3T, SIR-PS was significantly different between groups (p = 0.033) but without significant pairwise differences. Conclusion: At 1.5T pancreas T1 SIR moderately to strongly correlates with estimated T1 relaxation time and is significantly lower in children with pancreatitis.

Abstract:To compare liver stiffness measurements obtained from MR elastography with liver T1 relaxation times obtained from T1 mapping and T2 relaxation times obtained from T2 mapping for detection and staging of liver fibrosis. 223 patients with known or suspected liver disease underwent MRI of the liver with T1 mapping (Look-Locker sequence) and 2D SE-EPI MR elastography (MRE) sequences. 139 of these patients also underwent T2 mapping with radial T2 TSE sequence. Two readers (R1 & R2) measured liver stiffness, T1 relaxation times and T2 relaxation times. T1 and T2 times were correlated with stiffness measurements. ROC analysis was used to compare the performance of both techniques in discriminating fibrosis stage in 23 patients who underwent liver biopsy. For each reader there was significant moderate positive correlation between liver MRE and liver T1 mapping (r = 0.49 and 0.36). There was significant moderate positive correlation between liver T2 mapping and each of MRE and T1 mapping for one of the readers (r = 0.40 and 0.27). AUC for differentiating early (F0–F2) from advanced (F3–F4) fibrosis in biopsied patients was 0.975 (R1) and 0.925 (R2) for MRE, 0.671 (R1) and 0.642 (R2) for T1 mapping and 0.671 (R1) and 0.743 (R2) for T2 mapping. Inter-reader agreement was good for MRE (ICC = 0.84) substantial for T1 mapping (0.94) and T2 mapping (0.96). Liver T1 and T2 mapping showed moderate positive correlation with MR elastography. Accuracy of MRE is however superior to T1 and T2 mapping in the subset of patients who underwent liver biopsy. Accuracy of combination of MRE and T1 mapping/T2 mapping was not superior to MRE alone.

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), featuring as no ionizing radiation, higher soft tissue resolution and multiplanar imaging, has been widely used in the diagnosis of pediatric tumors. Conventional MRI techniques mainly provide information on morphological information of tumors but cannot display physiological and pathological changes in tumors. In recent years, with rapid development of MRI hardware and software, some functional MRI technologies have been applied in clinical practice and have become an important trend on pediatric oncology. These techniques include perfusion-weighted imaging, diffusion-weighted imaging, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, susceptibility weighted imaging. These new technologies can demonstrate the microstructural information of tumors, which will provide more helpful information for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up in pediatric tumors when combined with conventional MRI techniques.
Three-dimensional Simultaneous Brain Mapping of T1, T2, T2*and Magnetic Susceptibility with MR Multitasking

Abstract:Purpose To develop a new technique that enables simultaneous quantification of whole-brain T-1, T-2, T2*, as well as susceptibility and synthesis of six contrast-weighted images in a single 9.1-minute scan. Methods The technique uses hybrid T-2-prepared inversion-recovery pulse modules and multi-echo gradient-echo readouts to collect k-space data with various T1, T2, and T2* weightings. The underlying image is represented as a six-dimensional low-rank tensor consisting of three spatial dimensions and three temporal dimensions corresponding to T-1 recovery, T-2 decay, and multi-echo behaviors, respectively. Multiparametric maps were fitted from reconstructed image series. The proposed method was validated on phantoms and healthy volunteers, by comparing quantitative measurements against corresponding reference methods. The feasibility of generating six contrast-weighted images was also examined. Results High quality, co-registered T-1, T-2, and T2* susceptibility maps were generated that closely resembled the reference maps. Phantom measurements showed substantial consistency (R-2 > 0.98) with the reference measurements. Despite the significant differences of T-1 (p < .001), T-2 (p = .002), and T2* (p = 0.008) between our method and the references for in vivo studies, excellent agreement was achieved with all intraclass correlation coefficients greater than 0.75. No significant difference was found for susceptibility (p = .900). The framework is also capable of synthesizing six contrast-weighted images. Conclusion The MR Multitasking-based 3D brain mapping of T-1, T-2, T2*, and susceptibility agrees well with the reference and is a promising technique for multicontrast and quantitative imaging.
Magnetic resonance fingerprinting of the pancreas at 1.5 T and 3.0 T

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging of the pancreas is increasingly used as an important diagnostic modality for characterisation of pancreatic lesions. Pancreatic MRI protocols are mostly qualitative due to time constraints and motion sensitivity. MR Fingerprinting is an innovative acquisition technique that provides qualitative data and quantitative parameter maps from a single free-breathing acquisition with the potential to reduce exam times. This work investigates the feasibility of MRF parameter mapping for pancreatic imaging in the presence of free-breathing exam. Sixteen healthy participants were prospectively imaged using MRF framework. Regions-of-interest were drawn in multiple solid organs including the pancreas and T1 and T2 values determined. MRF T1 and T2 mapping was performed successfully in all participants (acquisition time:2.4-3.6 min). Mean pancreatic T1 values were 37-43% lower than those of the muscle, spleen, and kidney at both 1.5 and 3.0 T. For these organs, the mean pancreatic T2 values were nearly 40% at 1.5 T and < 12% at 3.0 T. The feasibility of MRF at 1.5 T and 3 T was demonstrated in the pancreas. By enabling fast and free-breathing quantitation, MRF has the potential to add value during the clinical characterisation and grading of pathological conditions, such as pancreatitis or cancer.
Evaluation of variable flip angle, MOLLI, SASHA, and IR-SNAPSHOT pulse sequences for T1 relaxometry and extracellular volume imaging of the pancreas and liver

Abstract:Purpose: Compare fourT1-mapping pulse sequences for T1 relaxometry and extracellular volume (ECV) fraction of the pancreas and liver MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vitro phase of this prospective study was performed on a T1 phantom, followed by imaging 22 patients. Variable flip angle (VFA), modified Look-Locker inversion recovery (MOLLI), prototype saturation recovery single-shot acquisition (SASHA), and prototype inversion recovery (IR-SNAPSHOT) pulse sequences were used to obtain T1 and ECV maps on the same 1.5 T MR scanner using the same imaging protocol. Results: In vitro tests showed almost perfect precision of MOLLI (ρc = 0.9998), SASHA (ρc = 0.9985), and IR-SNAPSHOT (ρc = 0.9976), while VFA showed relatively less, however, substantial precision (ρc = 0.9862). Results of patient scans showed similar ECV fraction of the liver (p = 0.08), pancreas (p = 0.43), and T1 of the liver (p = 0.08) with all pulse sequences. T1 of the pancreas with MOLLI, SASHA, and IR-SNAPSHOT was statistically similar (p > 0.05). Conclusion: MOLLI, SASHA, and IR-SNAPSHOT provided almost perfect in vitro precision and similar T1 during in vivo scans. Similar ECV fractions of the liver and pancreas were obtained with all sequences. More refinement of pulse sequences to provide sufficient spatial coverage in one breath hold together with high precision would be desirable in abdominal imaging.
T1 mapping for diagnosis of mild chronic pancreatitis

Abstract:Purpose: To determine if the T1 relaxation time of the pancreas can detect parenchymal changes in mild chronic pancreatitis (CP). Materials and methods: This Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant retrospective study analyzed 98 patients with suspected mild CP. Patients were grouped as normal (n = 53) or mild CP (n = 45) based on history, presenting symptomatology, and concordant findings on both the secretin-enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (S-MRCP) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). T1 maps were obtained in all patients using the same 3D gradient echo technique on the same 3T scanner. T1 relaxation times, fat signal fraction (FSF), and anterior-posterior (AP) diameter were correlated with the clinical diagnosis of CP. Results: There was a significant difference (P < 0.0001) in the T1 relaxation times between the control (mean = 797 msec, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 730, 865) and mild CP group (mean = 1099 msec, 95% CI: 1032, 1166). A T1 relaxation time threshold value of 900 msec was 80% sensitive (95% CI: 65, 90) and 69% specific (95% CI: 56, 82) for the diagnosis of mild CP (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.81). Multiple regression analysis showed that T1 relaxation time was the only statistically significant variable correlating with the diagnosis of CP (P < 0.0001). T1 relaxation times showed a weak positive correlation with the pancreatic FSF (ρ = 0.33, P = 0.01) in the control group, but not in the mild CP group. Conclusion: The T1 relaxation time of the pancreatic parenchyma was significantly increased in patients with mild CP. Therefore, T1 mapping might be used as a practical quantitative imaging technique for the evaluation of suspected mild CP. Level of evidence: 3 J. Magn. Reson. Imaging 2017;45:1171-1176.

Abstract:Conventional T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pancreas can vary significantly due to factors such as scanner differences and pulse sequence variations. This review explores T1 and T2 mapping techniques, modern MRI methods providing quantitative information about tissue relaxation times. Various T1 and T2 mapping pulse sequences are currently under investigation. Clinical and research applications of T1 and T2 mapping in the pancreas include their correlation with fibrosis, inflammation, and neoplasms. In chronic pancreatitis, T1 mapping and extracellular volume (ECV) quantification demonstrate potential as biomarkers, aiding in early diagnosis and classification. T1 mapping also shows promise in evaluating pancreatic exocrine function and detecting glucose metabolism disorders. T2* mapping is valuable in quantifying pancreatic iron, offering insights into conditions like thalassemia major. However, challenges persist, such as the lack of consensus on optimal sequences and normal values for healthy pancreas relaxometry. Large-scale studies are needed for validation, and improvements in mapping sequences are essential for widespread clinical integration. The future holds potential for mixed qualitative and quantitative models, extending the applications of relaxometry techniques to various pancreatic lesions and enhancing routine MRI protocols for pancreatic pathology diagnosis and prognosis.

Abstract:T1 mapping is a quantitative method to characterize tissues with magnetic resonance imaging in a quick and efficient manner. It utilizes the relaxation rate of protons to depict the underlying structures within the imaging frame. While T1-mapping techniques are used with some frequency in areas such as cardiac imaging, their application for understanding malignancies and identifying tumor structures has yet to be thoroughly investigated. Utilizing a saturation recovery method to acquire T1 maps for two different tumor models has revealed that longitudinal relaxation mapping is sensitive enough to distinguish between normal and malignant tissue. This is seen even with decreased signal/noise ratios using small voxel sizes to obtain high-resolution images. In both tumor models, it was revealed that relaxation mapping recorded significantly different relaxation values between regions encapsulating the tumor, muscle, kidney, or spleen, as well as between the cell lines themselves. This indicates a potential future application of relaxation mapping as a method to fingerprint various stages of tumor development and may prove a useful measure to identify micro-metastases.
T1 Maps in Upper Abdomen: Comparison of Look-Locker and B1-corrected Variable-Flip-angle (VFA) Methods

Abstract:Purpose T1 mapping has been recognized as a promising tool for quantitative measurements of various tissues that may assist in accurate and tissue specific diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to compare the T1 values of two whole-liver T1 mapping methods, free-breathing Look-Locker and breath-hold B1-corrected variable-flip-angle (VFA) in diagnosing liver cirrhosis, and compare the T1 relaxation time of various upper abdominal organs using two methods. Methods Non-enhanced T1 mapping with whole-liver coverage was performed on 85 prospectively enrolled suspicious liver tumor patients. Multiple abdominal MRI sequences were obtained. Image quality was assessed by scoring image artifacts on 5-point scale. T1 relaxation time for each organ was recorded. Statistical significance analyzed using Paired t test. Results T1 maps of Look-Locker method showed fewer artifacts, with score 5 in all cases compared to 36% in VFA method. There was no significant difference between cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic livers of either left or right lobe in both methods. T1 relaxation time was significantly lower ( p < 0.0001) in Look-Locker than VFA method in both lobes of liver, spleen, pancreas, left kidney, right kidney, kidney cortex and medulla, erector spinae and rectus abdominis. No significant difference was found between left and right lobe of liver in both methods. T1 relaxation time of both methods was significantly lower in kidney cortex ( p < 0.0001) than medulla on both left and right kidneys. Conclusions The choice of Look-Locker or B1-corrected VFA-based T1 mapping may affect T1 values of organs in upper abdomen. Look-Locker showed better image quality and less motion artifacts than B1-corrected VFA method.

Abstract:We propose liver-BUDA-SAGE (liver Blip Up-Down Acquisition for Spin And Gradient Echo imaging), an efficient echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence to rapidly obtain high-resolution T 2 and $T_2^{\ast}$ quantitative mapping of the human liver at 3.0 Tesla (T) with high-coverage and high geometric fidelity. This multi-shot navigator-free acquisition includes multiple $T_{{2^ - }}^{\ast},T_{{2^ - }}^\prime$ and T 2 -weighted contrasts with alternating phase-encoding polarities across the interleaved shots. A field map estimated from interim reconstructions was incorporated into the joint multi-shot EPI reconstruction with a structured low-rank constraint to eliminate geometric distortion. An adapted quantitative multi-parametric mapping method was established using a combined least-square solution and Bloch dictionary matching to obtain maps based on the re-constructed echoes. In-vivo results demonstrate the ability of liver-BUDA-SAGE to provide high-coverage, distortion-free, multi-contrast images and quantitative ${T_2}/T_2^{\ast}$ maps at 1.5×1.5 mm 2 in-plane resolution in ~20s for 16 slices. Estimated quantitative maps showed good agreement in phantom compared to conventional mapping methods with slight biases of 2.6 ms and -0.2 ms for T 2 and $T_2^{\ast}$. Measured in-vivo liver values (mean±SD) for T 2 and $T_2^{\ast}$ were 21.26±2.37 ms and 30.59±3.70 ms which are consistent with those reported in the literature.

Abstract:Background: Current magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of pancreatic disease is qualitative in nature. Quantitative imaging offers several advantages, including increased reproducibility and sensitivity to detect mild or diffuse disease. The role of multiparametric mapping MRI in characterizing various tissue types in pancreatic disease such as chronic pancreatitis (CP) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has rarely been evaluated. Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility of multiparametric mapping [T1, T2, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC)] in defining tissue characteristics that occur in CP and PDAC to improve disease diagnosis. Materials and methods: Pancreatic MRI was performed in 17 patients with PDAC undergoing therapy, 7 patients with CP, and 29 healthy volunteers with no pancreatic disease. T1 modified Look-Locker Inversion Recovery (T1 MOLLI), T2-prepared gradient-echo, and multi-slice single-shot echo-planar diffusion weighted imaging (SS-EPI DWI) sequences were used for data acquisition. Regions of interest (ROIs) of pancreas in PDAC, CP, and control subjects were outlined by an experienced radiologist. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the difference between groups and regions of the pancreas, and Tukey tests were used for multiple comparison testing within groups. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were analyzed, and the areas under the curves (AUCs) were calculated using single parameter and combined parameters, respectively. Results: T1, T2, and ADC values of the entire pancreas among PDAC, CP, and control subjects; and between upstream and downstream portions of the pancreas in PDAC patients were all significantly different (p < 0.05). The AUC values were 0.90 for T1, 0.55 for T2, and 0.71 for ADC for independent prediction of PDAC. By combining T1, T2, and ADC, the AUC value was 0.94 (sensitivity 91.54%, specificity 85.81%, 95% CI: 0.92-0.96), which yielded higher accuracy than any one parameter only (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Multiparametric mapping MRI is feasible for the evaluation of the differences between PDAC, CP, and normal pancreas tissues. The combination of multiple parameters of T1, T2, and ADC provides a higher accuracy than any single parameter alone in tissue characterization of the pancreas.
An Exploratory Study: Can Native T1 Mapping Differentiate Sarcoma from Benign Soft Tissue Tumors at 1.5 T and 3 T?

Abstract:Background/Objectives: T1 relaxation time has been shown to be valuable in detecting and characterizing tumors in various organs. This study aims to determine whether native T1 relaxation time can serve as a useful tool in distinguishing sarcomas from benign tumors. Methods: In this retrospective study, patients with histologically confirmed soft tissue sarcomas and benign tumors were included. Only patients who had not undergone prior treatment or surgery and whose magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) included native T1 mapping were considered. Images were acquired using both 1.5 T and 3 T MRI scanners. T1 histogram parameters were measured in regions of interest encompassing the entire tumor volume, as well as in healthy muscle tissue. Results: Out of 316 cases, 16 sarcoma cases and 9 benign tumor cases were eligible. The T1 values observed in sarcoma did not significantly differ from those in benign lesions in both 1.5 T and 3 T MRIs (p1.5T = 0.260 and p3T = 0.119). However, T1 values were found to be lower in healthy tissues compared to sarcoma at 3 T (p = 0.020), although this difference did not reach statistical significance at 1.5 T (p = 0.063). At both 1.5 T and 3 T, no significant difference between healthy muscle measured in sarcoma cases or benign tumor cases was observed (p1.5T = 0.472 and p3T = 0.226). Conclusions: T1 mapping has the potential to serve as a promising tool for differentiating sarcomas from benign tumors in baseline assessments. However, the standardization of imaging protocols and further improvements in T1 mapping techniques are necessary to fully realize its potential.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to determine if T1 relaxation time of the pancreas can detect parenchymal changes in early chronic pancreatitis (CP). Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 42 patients grouped as no CP (Cambridge 0; n = 21), equivocal (Cambridge 1; n = 12) or mild CP (Cambridge 2; n = 9) based on magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography findings using the Cambridge classification as the reference standard. Unenhanced T1 maps were acquired using a three-dimensional dual flip-angle gradient-echo technique on the same 1.5 T scanner with the same imaging parameters. Results: There was no significant difference between the T1 relaxation times of Cambridge 0 and 1 group (p = 0.58). There was a significant difference (p = 0.0003) in the mean T1 relaxation times of the pancreas between the combined Cambridge 0 and 1 (mean = 639 msec, 95% CI: 617, 660) and Cambridge 2 groups (mean = 726 msec, 95% CI: 692, 759). There was significant difference (p = 0.0009) in the mean T1 relaxation times of the pancreas between the Cambridge 0 (mean = 636 msec, 95% CI: 606, 666) and Cambridge 2 groups (mean = 726 msec, 95% CI: 692,759) as well as between Cambridge 1 (mean = 643 msec, 95% CI: 608, 679) and Cambridge 2 groups (mean = 726 msec, 95% CI: 692,759) (p = 0.0017). Bland-Altman analysis showed measurements of one reader to be marginally higher than the other by 15.7 msec (2.4%, p = 0.04). Conclusion: T1 mapping is a practical method capable of quantitatively reflecting morphologic changes even in the early stages of chronic pancreatitis, and demonstrates promise for future implementation in routine clinical imaging protocols. Advances in knowledge: T1 mapping can distinguish subtle parenchymal changes seen in early stage CP, and demonstrates promise for implementation in routine imaging protocols for the diagnosis of CP.

Abstract:T1ρ relaxation imaging is a quantitative imaging technique that has been used to assess cartilage integrity, liver fibrosis, tumors, cardiac infarction, and Alzheimer's disease. T1 , T2 , and T1ρ relaxation time constants have each demonstrated different degrees of sensitivity to several markers of fibrosis and inflammation, allowing for a potential multi-parametric approach to tissue quantification. Traditional magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) has been shown to provide quick, quantitative mapping of T1 and T2 relaxation time constants. In this study, T1ρ relaxation is added to the MRF framework using spin lock preparations. An MRF sequence involving an RF-spoiled sequence with TR , flip angle, T1ρ , and T2 preparation variation is described. The sequence is then calibrated against conventional T1 , T2 , and T1ρ relaxation mapping techniques in agar phantoms and the abdomens of four healthy volunteers. Strong intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC > 0.9) were found between conventional and MRF sequences in phantoms and also in healthy volunteers (ICC > 0.8). The highest ICC correlation values were seen in T1 , followed by T1ρ and then T2 . In this study, T1ρ relaxation has been incorporated into the MRF framework by using spin lock preparations, while still fitting for T1 and T2 relaxation time constants. The acquisition of these parameters within a single breath hold in the abdomen alleviates the issues of movement between breath holds in conventional techniques.

Abstract:Purpose: To characterize changes in relaxation times of liver using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in an experimental mouse model of liver fibrosis. Quantitative MRI is a potentially robust method to characterize liver fibrosis. However, correlation between relaxation times and fibrosis stage has been controversial. Materials and Methods: Liver fibrosis was induced in male adult C57BL/6N mice (2225 g; n = 12) by repetitive dosing of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). The animals were examined with a series of spin-echo (SE) images with varying TRs and multiecho SE imaging sequence at 7 T before and 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after CCl4 insult. Hepatic T1 and T2 values were measured. Histology was performed with hematoxylin-eosin staining and Masson's trichrome staining. Results: Significant increase (P < 0.001) in hepatic T1 was found at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks following CCl4 insult as compared with that before insult. Meanwhile, hepatic T2 at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after CCl4 insult was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than that before the insult. Liver histology showed collagen deposition, edema, and infiltration of inflammatory cells in livers with CCl4 insult. Conclusion: Both longitudinal and transverse relaxation times may serve as robust markers for liver fibrosis. With the advent of single breath-hold sequences for MR relaxometry, quantitative mapping of relaxation times can be routinely and reliably performed in abdominal organs and hence may be valuable and robust in detecting liver fibrosis at early phase and monitoring its progression. Abstract:T1 mapping is a new magnetic resonance imaging technique .By which the longitudinal relaxation time constant ( T1) of the myocardium can be measured to detect and quantitatively assess various focal or diffuse diseases .T1 mapping has various scan sequences , such as LL sequence , MOLLI sequence and ShMOLLI sequence .T1 mapping can be classified into two groups:pre--contrast and post-contrast T1 mapping.In addition, by measuring post-contrast T1 mapping and pre-contrast T1 mapping, myocardial extra-cellular volume (ECV) can be derived, which has been applied to assess myocardial edema and myocardial fibrosis with great clinical value .This review focuses on the techniques , methods and clinical application of cardiac magnetic resonance T 1 mapping technology .
