Abstract:We investigate the -classical orthogonal polynomials, where is the weighted difference operator. So, we address the problem of finding the sequence of orthogonal polynomials such that their -derivatives is also orthogonal polynomials. To solve this problem we adopt a different approach to those employed in this topic. We first begin by determining the coefficients involved in their recurrence relations, and then providing an exhaustive list of all solutions. When , we rediscover the classical orthogonal polynomials of Hermite, Laguerre, Bessel and Jacobi. For , we encounter the families of discrete classical orthogonal polynomials as particular cases.

Abstract:We study the monic orthogonal polynomials with respect to a singularly perturbed Airy weight. By using Chen and Ismail's ladder operator approach, we derive a discrete system satisfied by the recurrence coefficients for the orthogonal polynomials. We find that the orthogonal polynomials satisfy a second-order linear ordinary differential equation, whose coefficients are all expressed in terms of the recurrence coefficients. By considering the time evolution, we obtain a system of differential-difference equations satisfied by the recurrence coefficients. Finally, we study the asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients when the degrees of the orthogonal polynomials tend to infinity.

Abstract:We consider multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with the exponential cubic weight e−x3 over two contours in the complex plane. We study the basic properties of these polynomials, including the Rodrigues formula and nearest-neighbor recurrence relations. It turns out that the recurrence coefficients are related to a discrete Painlevé equation. The asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients, the ratio of the diagonal multiple orthogonal polynomials and the (scaled) zeros of these polynomials are also investigated.

Abstract:This paper delves into classical multiple orthogonal polynomials with an arbitrary number of weights, including Jacobi-Piñeiro, Laguerre of both first and second kinds, as well as multiple orthogonal Hermite polynomials. Novel explicit expressions for nearest-neighbor recurrence coefficients, as well as the step line case, are provided for all these polynomial families. Furthermore, new explicit expressions for type I multiple orthogonal polynomials are derived for Laguerre of the second kind and also for multiple Hermite polynomials.

Abstract:The orthogonal structure in two variables on the quartic curve is considered. For an even weight function on the curve, we show that orthogonal polynomials can be expressed in terms of two families of orthogonal polynomials in one variable. We establish relationships between the partial Fourier sum on the curve and partial Fourier sums in one variable. We also investigate the quadrature rule and polynomial interpolation on the curve.

Abstract:For a family of polynomials in two variables, orthogonal with respect to a weight function, we prove under some conditions, equivalence between: the Matrix Pearson equation of the weight, the second order linear partial differential equation, the orthogonality of the gradients, the Matrix Rodrigues formula involving tensor product of Matrices, and the so-called first structure relation. We then propose a definition of classical orthogonal polynomials in two variables.

Mixed Type Multiple Orthogonal Polynomials Associated with the Modified Bessel Functions and Products of Two Coupled Random Matrices

Abstract:We consider mixed type multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with a system of weight functions consisting of two vectors. One vector is defined in terms of scaled modified Bessel function of the first kind Iμ and Iμ+1, the other vector is defined in terms of scaled modified Bessel function of the second kind Kν and Kν+1. We show that the corresponding mixed type multiple orthogonal polynomials exist. For the special case that each multi-index is on or close to the diagonal, basic properties of the polynomials and their linear forms are investigated, which include explicit formulas, integral representations, differential properties, limiting forms and recurrence relations. It comes out that, for specified parameters, the linear forms of these mixed type multiple orthogonal polynomials can be interpreted as biorthogonal functions encountering in recent studies of products of two coupled random matrices. This particularly implies a Riemann–Hilbert characterization of the correlation kernel, which provides an alternative way for further asymptotic analysis.
Lower Bounds for Weighted Chebyshev and Orthogonal Polynomials

Abstract:We derive optimal asymptotic and non-asymptotic lower bounds on the Widom factors for weighted Chebyshev and orthogonal polynomials on compact subsets of the real line. In the Chebyshev case we extend the optimal non-asymptotic lower bound previously known only in a handful of examples to regular compact sets and a large class weights. Using the non-asymptotic lower bound, we extend Widom's asymptotic lower bound for weights bounded away from zero to a large class of weights with zeros including weights with strong zeros and infinitely many zeros. As an application of the asymptotic lower bound we extend Bernstein's 1931 asymptotics result for weighted Chebyshev polynomials on an interval to arbitrary Riemann integrable weights with finitely many zeros and to some continuous weights with infinitely many zeros. In the case of orthogonal polynomials, we derive optimal asymptotic and non-asymptotic lower bound on arbitrary regular compact sets for a large class of weights in the non-asymptotic case and for arbitrary Szegő class weights in the asymptotic case, extending previously known bounds on finite gap and Parreau--Widom sets.

Classical discrete multiple orthogonal polynomials: hypergeometric and integral representations

Abstract:This work explores classical discrete multiple orthogonal polynomials, including Hahn, Meixner of the first and second kinds, Kravchuk, and Charlier polynomials, with an arbitrary number of weights. Explicit expressions for the recursion coefficients of Hahn multiple orthogonal polynomials are derived. By leveraging the multiple Askey scheme and the recently discovered explicit hypergeometric representation of type I multiple Hahn polynomials, corresponding explicit hypergeometric representations are provided for the type I polynomials and recursion coefficients of all the aforementioned descendants within the Askey scheme. Additionally, integral representations for these families within the Hahn class in the Askey scheme are presented. The multiple Askey scheme is further completed by providing the corresponding limits for the weights, polynomials, and recurrence coefficients.

We give an integral representation for $p_n$ from which it is in principle possible to derive its asymptotic behavior as $n\to\infty$ at every point $z$ of the complex plane, the asymptotic analysis of the integral being primarily dependent on the nature of the first singularities encountered by the function $v(z)^{-1}\prod_{k=1}^s(1-z\overline{a}_k)^{-1}$.

In this case we present the following positive continuous weights $p(\theta) = p(\theta,a,b)$ on the unit circle for $y_n(x,a,b)$: $$ 2\pi p(\theta,a,b) = -1 + 2(a-1) \int_0^1 e^{-bu\cos\theta} \cos(bu\sin\theta) (1-u)^{a-2} du, $$ where $\theta\in[0,2\pi]$. Abstract:In this paper, by introducing new matrix operations and using a specific inverse relation, we establish the dual forms of the orthogonality relations for some well-known discrete and continuous $q$-orthogonal polynomials from the Askey-scheme such as the little and big $q$-Jacobi, $q$-Racah, (generalized) $q$-Laguerre, as well as the Askey-Wilson polynomials. As one of the most interesting results, we show that the Askey-Wilson $q$-beta integral represented in terms of the VWP-balanced $\,_8\phi_7$ series is just a dual form of the orthogonality relation of the Askey-Wilson polynomials.

Abstract:We study orthogonal polynomials (OPs) for a weight function defined over a domain of revolution, where the domain is formed from rotating a two‐dimensional region and goes beyond the quadratic domains. Explicit constructions of orthogonal bases are provided for weight functions on a number of domains. Particular attention is paid to the setting when an orthogonal basis can be constructed explicitly in terms of known polynomials of either one or two variables. Several new families of OPs are derived, including a few families that are eigenfunctions of a spectral operator and their reproducing kernels satisfy an addition formula.

Abstract:We extend the close interplay between continued fractions, orthogonal polynomials, and Gaussian quadrature rules to several variables in a special but natural setting which we characterize in terms of moment sequences. The crucial condition for the characterization is the commutativity of the multiplication operators on finite polynomial subspaces modulo an ideal. Moreover, starting from the orthogonal polynomials or the three-term recurrence, our method constructs a sequence of moment sequences that provides an approximation of the maximal order for recovering the moment sequence that defines the orthogonality.

Abstract:An extension of the bivariate homogeneous orthogonal polynomials can be introduced by using a linear functional with complex moments obtained from the series expansions of a bivariate function at the origin and infinity. They are used to construct the bivariate homogeneous two-point Padé approximant and to solve related problems. In this paper we study the connection between extended homogeneous bivariate orthogonal polynomials and symbolic Gaussian cubature formula for the approximation of bivariate integrals over domains with non-negative weight functions. By extension to the two-point case, a new symbolic Gaussian cubature is presented. A new numerical cubature is also developed. Finally, some numerical examples are given to illustrate our results.

Abstract:We consider weighted Chebyshev polynomials on the unit circle corresponding to a weight of the form $(z-1)^s$ where $s>0$. For integer values of $s$ this corresponds to prescribing a zero of the polynomial on the boundary. As such, we extend findings of Lachance, Saff and Varga, to non-integer $s$. Using this generalisation, we are able to relate Chebyshev polynomials on lemniscates and other, more established, categories of Chebyshev polynomials. An essential part of our proof involves the broadening of the Erdős--Lax inequality to encompass powers of polynomials. We believe that this particular result holds significance in its own right.

Abstract:In this paper, we study polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Pollaczek-Jacobi type weightwpJ(x,t)=e-txx alpha(1-x)beta,t >= 0,alpha>0,beta>0,x is an element of[0,1].The uniform asymptotic expansions for the monic orthogonal polynomials on the interval (0,1) and outside this interval are obtained. Moreover, near x=0, the uniform asymptotic expansion involves Airy function as sigma=2n2t ->infinity,n ->infinity, and Bessel function of order alpha as sigma=2n2t -> 0,n ->infinity; in the neighborhood of x=1, the uniform asymptotic expansion is associated with Bessel function of order beta as n ->infinity. The recurrence coefficients and leading coefficient of the orthogonal polynomials are expressed in terms of a particular Painleve III transcendent. We also obtain the limit of the kernel in the bulk of the spectrum. The double scaled logarithmic derivative of the Hankel determinant satisfies a sigma-form Painleve III equation. The asymptotic analysis is based on the Deift and Zhou's steepest descent method.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotics of polynomials orthogonal with respect to the varying quartic weight ω(x) = e −nV (x) ,w hereV (x) = Vt(x) = x 4 4 + t 2 x 2 . We focus on the critical case t = −2, in the sense that for t −2, the support of the associated equilibrium measure is a single interval, while for t< −2, the support consists of two intervals. Globally uniform asymptotic expansions are obtained for z in three unbounded regions. These regions together cover the whole complex z-plane. In particular, in the region containing the origin, the expansion involves the Ψ function affiliated with the Hastings- McLeod solution of the second Painleve equation. Our approach is based on a modified version of the steepest-descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems introduced by Deift and Zhou (Ann. Math. 137 (1993), 295-370).
