Abstract:We consider weighted Chebyshev polynomials on the unit circle corresponding to a weight of the form $(z-1)^s$ where $s>0$. For integer values of $s$ this corresponds to prescribing a zero of the polynomial on the boundary. As such, we extend findings of Lachance, Saff and Varga, to non-integer $s$. Using this generalisation, we are able to relate Chebyshev polynomials on lemniscates and other, more established, categories of Chebyshev polynomials. An essential part of our proof involves the broadening of the Erdős--Lax inequality to encompass powers of polynomials. We believe that this particular result holds significance in its own right.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address problems related to weighted Chebyshev polynomials on the unit circle, particularly focusing on cases where the weight function includes a vanishing component of the form \((z - 1)^s\), where \(s > 0\). The primary objectives include: 1. **Generalizing Previous Results:** Extending the findings of Lachance, Saff, and Varga, who studied the case where \(s\) is an integer, to non-integer values of \(s\). This involves relating Chebyshev polynomials on lemniscates and other categories of Chebyshev polynomials. 2. **Weighted Chebyshev Polynomials:** The paper considers the problem of finding parameters \(a_1^*, \ldots, a_n^* \in \mathbb{C}\) that minimize the deviation of a polynomial from zero when multiplied by a weight function \(w\). Specifically, the focus is on the weighted Chebyshev polynomial \(T_w^n(z)\) corresponding to the weight \(w(z) = (z - 1)^s\) on the unit circle \(T\). 3. **Erdős-Lax Inequality Extension:** The paper proves an Erdős-Lax type equality for powers of polynomials, which is a significant result in its own right and is crucial for extending the previous work to non-integer values of \(s\). This result helps in understanding the behavior of the weighted Chebyshev polynomials. 4. **Behavior of Zeros:** The authors investigate the behavior of the zeros of the weighted Chebyshev polynomials. They show that prescribing a zero on the boundary of the unit circle significantly changes the behavior of the zeros, leading them to cl
