Abstract:Recent advances in the fabrication and manipulation of sub-wavelength optical fibers provide new methods for building chemical and biological sensors, generating supercontinuum light by nonlinear pulse propagation, and constructing microphotonic components and devices. We examine the properties of sub-wavelength dimension optical fibers as waveguides. The reported silica submicrometer- or nanometer-diameter wires are suitable for low-loss optical wave guiding. Thanks to their excellent uniformity, large length, high flexibility, and strength, these wires can be manipulated and assembled with high accuracy.

Abstract:By means of high-temperature physical drawing, glasses can be directly drawn into subwavelength-or nanometer-diameter fibers. As-fabricated nanofibers show excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness for low-loss optical wave guiding, and may exhibit a series of interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, evanescent guidance and high waveguide dispersion. These fibers provide promising building blocks for photonic applications in optical communications, optical sensing and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Asymmetric light propagation is crucial to the development of optical-based functional components in nanophotonics. Diverse configurations and structures have been proposed to allow asymmetrical propagation of photonic signal, but on-chip integration is difficult to achieve due to their complex structure and/or relatively large footprint. Here we report the first design and realization of asymmetric light propagation in single semiconductor nanowires with a composition gradient along the length. We show the asymmetric nanowire waveguides can be synthesized using a simple thermal evaporation and vapor transport approach without involving complicated and costly fabrication processes. Our studies demonstrate the asymmetric nanowire waveguides offer some significant advantages over previous designs, including ultra-low operation power, tunable working wavelength and nanoscale footprint, making them attractive building blocks for integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:The guiding and transport of energy, for example of electromagnetic waves underpins many technologies that have shaped modern society, ranging from long distance optical fibre telecommunications to on-chip optical processors. Traditionally, a mechanism is required that exponentially localises the waves or particles in the confinement region, e.g. total internal reflection at a boundary. We introduce a waveguiding mechanism that relies on a different origin for the exponential confinement and that arises due to the physics of diffusion. We demonstrate this concept using light and show that photon density waves can propagate as a guided mode along a core-structure embedded in a scattering, opaque material, enhancing light transmission by orders of magnitude and along non-trivial, e.g. curved trajectories. This waveguiding mechanism can also occur naturally, for example in the cerebral spinal fluid surrounding the brain, along tendons in the human body and is to be expected in other systems that follow the same physics e.g. neutron diffusion.

Abstract:Unidirectional light propagation, as in the emerging field of topological photonics, offers robust transport of light in devices despite the presence of fabrication flaws. This highly nontrivial effect, however, can only be achieved in correspondingly nontrivial structures. The authors present a significantly simplified paradigm in which dynamic modulation of a photonic waveguide conducts light in one direction, even through structural defects. This approach opens an avenue to exploring topological photonics, and to slow-light waveguides unhindered by their imperfections, which is exciting for applications in integrated optics.

Abstract:The guided transmission of optical waves is critical for light-based applications in modern communication, information processing, and energy generation systems. Traditionally, guiding light waves in structures like optical fibres is predominantly achieved through the use of total internal reflection. In periodic platforms, a variety of other physical mechanisms can also be deployed to transport optical waves. However, transversely confining light in fully dielectric, non-periodic and passive configurations remains a challenge in situations where total internal reflection is not supported. Here, we present an approach to trapping light that utilizes the exotic features of Lagrange points, a special class of equilibrium positions akin to those responsible for capturing trojan asteroids in celestial mechanics. This is achieved in twisted arrangements in which optical Coriolis forces induce guiding channels even at locations where the refractive index landscape is defocusing or entirely unremarkable. These findings may have implications beyond standard optical waveguiding schemes and could also apply to other physical systems such as acoustics, electron beams and ultracold atoms.

Abstract:Herein, we propose and demonstrate that the light-induced optical polymeric waveguides can function as the fully online optical connectors with directional transmission characteristics. The light-induced optical waveguides, which can be used for the optical couplings between single-mode fibers, are fabricated by using a photopolymerizable resin system formed by a 405-nm laser. Subsequently, the transmission characteristics of the light-induced waveguides with different parameters are investigated, and the experimental results reveal that the (directional) transmission characteristics can be modified by controlling the structure of the light-induced waveguides by controlling the illumination time (single-side) or the ratio of the illumination intensity (dual-side). Additionally, the preliminary experimental results reveal that the light-induced optical waveguides can function as the optical connectors. The light-induced waveguide build-up process, which is simple and effective, can be applied to the fabrication of polymer-based optical waveguide modules and for optical interconnections. Simultaneously, this present technique could be a feasible method of incorporating devices such as filters, isolators, and polarizers into fibers, which can potentially contribute to further expansion of integrated optoelectronic system.

Abstract:The characteristics of plasmonic nano-slot waveguides, in terms of different metallic materials and geometries, are presented in this paper. We numerically Investigate how efficiently light can be guided in straight and bend types of metallic waveguide at nanoscle. For numerical simulation the Drude model incorporated finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to handle the dispersive nature of the metals such as gold, silver, copper, aluminum at visible and near infra-red (IR) wavelengths. It is demonstrated that the plasmonic waveguide with nano-slot is an efficient candidate for optical interconnects at the visible and near-IR range of electromagnetic spectrum. The performance of straight, 90 degrees and Z-bend nano-slot waveguides is discussed by means of transmission and near-field characteristics.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that with appropriately arranged dielectric nanoparticle structures an extremely low loss guiding of light is achievable at the nanoscale. These dielectric nanoparticle waveguides (DNPWs) exhibit subwavelength transverse confinement of light comparable with metallic plasmon particle waveguides (MPPWs). Different from the MPPWs subject to inevitable intrinsic absorption loss, the material loss for some DNPWs is negligible, enabling long-distance light transport and offering an alternative choice for integrated photonics.

Abstract:Optical waveguides are vital components of data communication system technologies, but their scaling down to the nanoscale has remained challenging despite advances in nano-optics and nanomaterials. Recently, we theoretically predicted that the ultimate limit of visible photon guiding can be achieved in monolayer-thick transition metal dichalcogenides. Here, we present an experimental demonstration of light guiding in an atomically thick tungsten disulfide membrane patterned as a photonic crystal structure. In this scheme, two-dimensional tungsten disulfide excitonic photoluminescence couples into quasi-guided photonic crystal modes known as resonant-type Wood's anomalies. These modes propagate via total internal reflection with only a small portion of the light diffracted to the far field. Such light guiding at the ultimate limit provides more possibilities to miniaturize optoelectronic devices and to test fundamental physical concepts.

Abstract:The scattering of light impacts sensing and communication technologies throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. Overcoming the effects of time-varying scattering media is particularly challenging. In this article we introduce a new way to control the propagation of light through dynamic complex media. Our strategy is based on the observation that many dynamic scattering systems exhibit a range of decorrelation times -- meaning that over a given timescale, some parts of the medium may essentially remain static. We experimentally demonstrate a suite of new techniques to identify and guide light through these networks of static channels -- threading optical fields around multiple dynamic pockets hidden at unknown locations inside opaque media. We first show how a single stable light field propagating through a partially dynamic medium can be found by optimising the wavefront of the incident field. Next, we demonstrate how this procedure can be accelerated by 2 orders of magnitude using a physically realised form of adjoint gradient descent optimisation. Finally, we describe how the search for stable light modes can be posed as an eigenvalue problem: we introduce a new optical matrix operator, the time-averaged transmission matrix, and show how it reveals a basis of fluctuation-eigenchannels that can be used for stable beam shaping through time-varying media. These methods rely only on external camera measurements recording scattered light, require no prior knowledge about the medium, and are independent of the rate at which dynamic regions move. Our work has potential future applications to a wide variety of technologies reliant on general wave phenomena subject to dynamic conditions, from optics to acoustics.

Abstract:Coupling among closely packed waveguides is a common optical phenomenon, and plays an important role in optical routing and integration. Unfortunately, this coupling property is usually sensitive to the working wavelength and structure features that hinder the broadband and robust functions. Here, we report a new strategy utilizing an artificial gauge field (AGF) to engineer the coupling dispersion and realize a dispersionless coupling among waveguides with periodically bending modulation. The AGF-induced dispersionless coupling is experimentally verified in a silicon waveguide platform, which already has wellestablished broadband and robust routing functions (directional coupling and splitting), suggesting potential applications in integrated photonics. As examples, we further demonstrate a three-level-cascaded AGF waveguide network to route broadband light to desired ports with an overwhelming advantage over the conventional ones in comparison. Our method provides a new route of coupling dispersion control by AGF and benefits applications that fundamentally rely on waveguide coupling.

Abstract:A new type of light waveguide using linearly aligned pinholes is presented. Results of basic experiments are compared with theoretical estimates calculated using continuous model. Since this waveguide utilizes no transparent material, it can be used to guide electromagnetic waves of wide wavelength ranges as well as other waves such as matter waves.

One-way light flow by spatio-temporal modulation

Abstract:The unidirectional flow of electrons that takes place in a conventional electronic diode has been a cornerstone in the development of the field of electronics. Achieving an equivalent one-way flow for light has been a long-standing problem. While a number of concepts have been suggested recently, attaining a unidirectional flow of light in a two-port system (e.g., a waveguiding configuration) is still challenging. Here, we present what we believe to be a novel approach for breaking reciprocity and achieving one-way flow of light. Taking a nanoplasmonic waveguide as an example, we show that a combination of time-dependent interband optical transitions, when in systems exhibiting a backward wave flow, can yield light transmission strictly in one direction. In our configuration, the energy flow is unidirectional: light is fully reflected in one direction of propagation, and is unperturbed in the other. The concept can find use in a range of applications including communications, smart windows, thermal radiation management, and solar energy harvesting.

Abstract:On-chip channelless diffraction-free beam guiding enables dense integration of optical circuits in a reconfigurable manner, where total internal reflection, which is considered the cornerstone of guided-wave optics, is utilized to confine light in the out-of-plane direction. Here, we theoretically propose a physical mechanism to achieve on-chip channelless diffraction-free beam guiding beyond the light cone, utilizing the physics of bound states in the continuum. A bound state in the continuum with a tailored spatial dispersion plays an important role in cancelling both the in-plane diffraction and the out-of-plane scattering when the condition for total internal reflection is not satisfied. As a proof-of-concept verification, we experimentally demonstrate such an effect based on an all-dielectric platform using microwaves. The on-chip channelless diffraction-free beam guiding beyond the light cone also allows direct free-space coupling to such self-collimation modes. Our results may open up an avenue for exploring the physics and applications of guided-wave optics.

Abstract:Waveguide design is crucial in developing efficient light delivery systems, requiring meticulous material selection, precise manufacturing, and rigorous performance optimization, including dispersion engineering. Here, we introduce universal diffractive waveguide designs that can match the performance of any conventional dielectric waveguide and achieve various functionalities. Optimized using deep learning, our diffractive waveguide designs can be cascaded to each other to form any desired length and are comprised of transmissive diffractive surfaces that permit the propagation of desired guided modes with low loss and high mode purity. In addition to guiding the targeted modes along the propagation direction through cascaded diffractive units, we also developed various waveguide components and introduced bent diffractive waveguides, rotating the direction of mode propagation, as well as programmable mode filtering and mode splitting diffractive waveguide designs, showcasing the versatility of this platform. This diffractive waveguide framework was experimentally validated in the terahertz (THz) spectrum using 3D-printed diffractive layers to selectively pass certain spatial modes while rejecting others. Diffractive waveguides can be scaled to operate at different wavelengths, including visible and infrared parts of the spectrum, without the need for material dispersion engineering, providing an alternative to traditional waveguide components. This advancement will have potential applications in telecommunications, imaging, sensing and spectroscopy, among others.

Abstract:The diffractive nature of light has limited optics and photonics to operate at scales much larger than the wavelength of light. The major challenge in scaling-down integrated photonics is how to mold the light flow below diffraction-limit in all three dimensions. A high index solid immersion lens can improve the spatial resolution by increasing the medium refractive index, but only to few times higher than in air. Photonic crystals can guide light in three dimensions, however, the guided beam width is around a wavelength. Surface plasmons has a potential to reach the sub-wavelength scales; nevertheless, it is confined in the two-dimensional interface between metals and dielectrics. Here, we present a new approach for molding the light flow at the deep sub-wavelength scale, using metamaterials with uniquely designed dispersion. We develop a design methodology for realizing sub-wavelength ray optics, and demonstrate lambda/10 width light beams flow through three-dimensional space.
