A $Π^0_2$ Singleton of Minimal Arithmetic Degree

Abstract:In the study of the arithmetic degrees (the degree structure induced by relative arithmetic definability, ($\leq_{a}$) the $\omega$-REA sets play a role analogous to the role the r.e. degrees play in the study of the Turing degrees. However, much less is known about the arithmetic degrees and the role of the $\omega$-REA sets in that structure than about the Turing degrees. Indeed, even basic questions such as the existence of a $\omega$-REA set of minimal arithmetic degree are open. This paper makes progress on this question by demonstrating that some promising approaches inspired by the analogy with the r.e sets fail to show that no $\omega$-REA set is arithmetically minimal. Finally, it constructs a $\Pi^0_2$ singleton of minimal arithmetic degree. Not only is this a result of considerable interest in it's own right, constructions of $\Pi^0_2$ singletons often pave the way for constructions of $\omega$-REA sets with similar properties. Along the way, a number of interesting results relating arithmetic reducibility and rates of growth are established.

Abstract:We prove that there are strong minimal pairs in the enumeration degrees and that the degrees of the left and right sides of strong minimal pairs include Σ20 degrees, although it is unknown if there is a strong minimal pair in the Σ20 enumeration degrees. We define a stronger type of minimal pair we call a strong super minimal pair, and show that there are none of these in the enumeration degrees, answering a question of Lempp, Slaman and Soskova [1] . We leave open the question of the existence of a super minimal pair in the enumeration degrees.

Abstract:We investigate a special class of Prüfer domains, firstly introduced by Dress in 1965. The {\it minimal Dress ring} $D_K$, of a field $K$, is the smallest subring of $K$ that contains every element of the form $1/(1+x^2)$, with $x\in K$. We show that, for some choices of $K$, $D_K$ may be a valuation domain, or, more generally, a Bézout domain admitting a weak algorithm. Then we focus on the minimal Dress ring $D$ of $\mathbb{R}(X)$: we describe its elements, we prove that it is a Dedekind domain and we characterize its non-principal ideals. Moreover, we study the products of $2\times 2$ idempotent matrices over $D$, a subject of particular interest for Prüfer non-Bézout domains.

Abstract:We present an axiom system for the plane Euclidean geometry of ruler and dividers constructions, expressed in Tarski's language, with points as the only variables and with the predicates of betweenness and equidistance as the only primitive notions. All axioms are statements about at most 5 points, and it is known that no axiom system with all axioms statements about at most 4 points exists in that language, so the axiom system presented here can be called the simplest possible one. This corrects an error in Pambuccian (Math Chronicle 18:63–74, 1989) and shows that the Pasch axiom can be replaced by three statements, a 3-variable one, a 4-variable one, and a 5-variable one in the context of plane Euclidean geometry over Pythagorean ordered fields. Viewed from the vantage point of the weak elementary Euclidean Pasch-free geometry, the Pasch axiom turns out to be equivalent to both a universal 5-variable sentence and to a positive 5-variable sentence.

Monotone Catenary Degree in Numerical Monoids

Abstract:Recent investigations on the catenary degrees of numerical monoids have demonstrated that this invariant is a powerful tool in understanding the factorization theory of this class of monoids. Although useful, the catenary degree is largely not sensitive to the lengths of factorizations of an element. In this paper, we study the monotone catenary degree of numerical monoids, which is a variant of catenary degree that requires chains run through factorization lengths monotonically. In general, the monotone catenary is greater than or equal to the catenary degree. We begin by providing an important class of monoids (arithmetical numerical monoids) for which monotone catenary degree is equal to the catenary degree. Conversely, we provide several classes of embedding dimension 3 numerical monoids where monotone catenary degree is strictly greater. We conclude by showing that this difference can grow arbitrarily large.

Abstract:A number field $K$ is called primitive if $\mathbb Q$ and $K$ are the only subfields of $K$. Let $X$ be a nice curve over $\mathbb Q$ of genus $g$. A point $P$ of degree $d$ on $X$ is called primitive if the field of definition $\mathbb Q(P)$ of the point is primitive. In this short note we prove that if $X$ has a divisor of degree $d> 2g$, then $X$ has infinitely many primitive points of degree $d$. This complements the results of Khawaja and Siksek that show that points of low degree are not primitive under certain conditions.

Abstract:A $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ class $P$ is thin if every $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ subclass $Q$ of $P$ is the intersection of $P$ with some clopen set. In 1993, Cenzer, Downey, Jockusch and Shore initiated the study of Turing degrees of members of thin $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ classes, and proved that degrees containing no members of thin $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ classes can be recursively enumerable, and can be minimal degree below {\bf 0}$'$. In this paper, we work on this topic in terms of genericity, and prove that all 2-generic degrees contain no members of thin $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ classes. In contrast to this, we show that all 1-generic degrees below {\bf 0}$'$ contain members of thin $\Pi^{0}_{1}$ classes.

Abstract:Studying ceratin combinatorial properties of non-unique factorizations have been a subject of recent literatures. Little is known about two combinatorial invariants, namely the catenary degree and the tame degree, even in the case of numerical monoids. In this paper we compute these invariants for a certain class of numerical monoids generated by generalized arithmetic sequences. We also show that the difference between the tame degree and the catenary degree can be arbitrary large even if the number of minimal generators is fixed.

Abstract:In this note we give an overview of various quantities that are used to measure the complexity of an algebraic dynamical system f:X-->X, including the dynamical degree d(f), which gives a coarse measure of the geometric complexity of the iterates of f, the arithmetic degree a(f,P), which gives a coarse measure of the arithmetic complexity of the orbit of a an algebraic point P in X, and various versions of the canonical height h_f(P) that provide more refined measures of arithmetic complexity. Emphasis is placed on open problems and directions for further exploration.

Abstract:We exposit two previously unpublished theorems of Leo Harrington. The first theorem says that there exist arithmetical singletons which are arithmetically incomparable. The second theorem says that there exists a ranked point which is not an arithmetical singleton. Unlike Harrington's proofs of these theorems, our proofs do not use the finite- or infinite-injury priority method. Instead they use an oracle construction adapted from the standard proof of the Friedberg Jump Theorem.

Abstract:The investigation and classification of non-unique factorization phenomena has attracted some interest in recent literature. For finitely generated monoids, S.T. Chapman and P.A. García-Sánchez, together with several co-authors, derived a method to calculate the catenary and tame degree from the monoid of relations. Then, in [1], the algebraic structure of this approach was investigated and the restriction to finitely generated monoids was removed. We now extend these ideas further to the monotone catenary degree and then apply all these results to the explicit computation of arithmetical invariants of semigroup rings. [1] A. Minimal covers in the Weihrauch degrees

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of minimal covers and strong minimal covers in the Weihrauch degrees. We characterize when a problem $f$ is a minimal cover or strong minimal cover of a problem $h$. We show that strong minimal covers only exist in the cone below $\mathsf{id}$ and that the Weihrauch lattice above $\mathsf{id}$ is dense. From this, we conclude that the degree of $\mathsf{id}$ is first-order definable in the Weihrauch degrees and that the first-order theory of the Weihrauch degrees is computably isomorphic to third-order arithmetic.

Abstract:In this article, we generalize the arithmetic degree and its related theory to dynamical systems defined over an arbitrary field $\mathbf{k}$ of characteristic $0$. We first consider a dynamical system $(X,f)$ over a finitely generated field $K$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, we introduce the arithmetic degrees $\alpha(f,\cdot)$ for $\overline{K}$-points by using Moriwaki heights. We study the arithmetic dynamical degree of $(X,f)$ and establish the relative degree formula. The relative degree formula gives a proof of the fundamental inequality, that is, the upper arithmetic degree $\overline{\alpha}(f,x)$ is less than or equal to the first dynamical degree $\lambda_1(f)$ in this setting. By taking spread-outs, we extend the definition of arithmetic degrees to dynamical systems over the field $\mathbf k$. We demonstrate that our definition is independent of the choice of the spread-out. Moreover, in this setting, we prove certain special cases of the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture. A main novelty of this paper is that, we give a characterization of arithmetic degrees of "transcendental points" in the case $\mathbf{k}=\mathbb{C}$, from which we deduce that $\alpha(f,x)=\lambda_1(f)$ for very general $x\in X(\mathbb{C})$ when $f$ is an endomorphism.

Abstract:In this paper we consider genus one equations of degree n, namely a (generalised) binary quartic when n = 2, a ternary cubic when n = 3, and a pair of quaternary quadrics when n = 4. A new definition for the minimality of genus one equations of degree n is introduced. The advantage of this definition is that it does not depend on invariant theory of genus one curves. We prove that this definition coincides with the classical definition of minimality when n <= 4. As an application, we give a new proof for the existence of global minimal genus one equations over number fields of class number 1.

Abstract:We study several properties of multihomogeneous prime ideals. We show that the multigraded generic initial ideal of a prime has very special properties, for instance, its radical is Cohen-Macaulay. We develop a comprehensive study of multidegrees in arbitrary positive multigraded settings. In these environments, we extend the notion of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals by means of a standardization technique. Furthermore, we recover or extend important results in the literature, for instance: we provide a multidegree version of Hartshorne's result stating the upper semicontinuity of arithmetic degree under flat degenerations, and we give an alternative proof of Brion's result regarding multiplicity-free varieties.

Abstract:The degree of a map between orientable manifolds is a fundamental concept in topology that aids in understanding the structure and properties of the manifolds and the maps between them. Numerous studies have been conducted on the degree of maps between orientable topological spaces. For each $d \in \mathbb{Z}$, we construct a degree $ d$ simplicial map from a $(2(n+1) \max\{|d|,1\})$-facet colored triangulation of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1$ to the standard $ 2(n+1) $-facet colored triangulation of $ \mathbb{S}^{n-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1 $. We demonstrate that these are the minimal possible colored triangulations for a degree $d $ simplicial self-map of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1 $, where $n \geq 2 $. Additionally, we construct a minimal degree $d $ simplicial map from a closed orientable $ n$-manifold to $ \mathbb{S}^n $, where $n \geq 1 $.
