Abstract:One of the most significant phenomena concerning language in higher education in modern time has been the rise of Integrated Content and Language in Higher Education (ICLHE) or English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) (Doiz, Lasagabaster, and Sierra 2013 ; Fortanet-Gómez 2013 ; Macaro et al. 2018 ; Doiz and Lasagabaster 2020 ; Sánchez-Pérez 2020 ; Dafouz and Smit 2020 ). The difference between them may be the perspective from which it is viewed. Most language teachers believe in the equal relevance of content and language in the subjects taught in an additional language. However, content teachers and some researchers advocate for the term EMI, which focuses on just one language, English, as the medium of instruction, without referring to the integration of language and content learning (Valcke and Wilkinson 2017 ). This content teacher perspective is the reason why most research on teacher training competences and course design are addressed to EMI, even though they deal with the linguistic aspects to be taken into consideration (Rubio-Alcalá and Mallorquín-Rodríguez 2020 ). The tendency to teach in a different language to the official ones in the country started to gain special relevance at the beginning of the century almost twenty years ago (Wilkinson 2004 ), when increasing the number of international students became a priority for many higher education institutions, especially in Northern Europe. This tendency expanded to the rest of the European countries and to other parts of the world (Wilkinson & Zegers, 2007 ) and brought forth the need for teacher professional development programmes in these countries and for associated research to design and implement them. For example, the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico created a language policy in 2015 to introduce programmes taught through the medium of English (Díaz 2020 ). In that same policy, the need for a professional training programme was pointed out and a key development indicator matrix was proposed to maximize the success of EMI in this Mexican university. On the other hand, some Brazilian universities such as the Universidade Federal do Paraná, encouraged by the internationalization policy issued by the Ministry of Education and the additional funding distributed, started to introduce EMI courses. At the same time, it was decided to offer specific training to the teachers involved. They started with a training workshop by Oxford EMI Training and eventually created their own EMI UFPR Course after some research on the needs and specific circumstances of the Brazilian EMI lecturers (Martínez and Fernandes 2020 ).
