Abstract:This study aims to explore the current published research on Language Massive Open Online Courses (LMOOCs), outlining the types of papers, countries where studies were performed and institutions devoted to this field. Also, it intends to classify the reviewed literature following a general categorisation of MOOCs , and to identify the main trends and topics of interest for LMOOC researchers. Results show that there is still a lack of LMOOC-related articles in CALL (computer assisted language learning) journals, since most of the publications in the period reviewed (2012-18) are conference papers. The country in which most studies have been done so far is Spain and Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia (UNED) is currently the most active institution in this area. Within the taxonomy established, the most popular categories of studies focused on LMOOC participants or providers and case studies. Systematic review of the published literature indicated that research trends in LMOOCs studies comprise: 1) conceptualisation of LMOOCs and their distinctive features; 2) attempts to find the most suitable model for language teaching and learning beyond the xMOOC/cMOOC dichotomy; 3) suitability of LMOOCs for languages for specific purposes (LSP) courses; 4) focus on the learners and their motivation and experience throughout the course; 5) reflection on the new role of the teacher; 6) instructional design and how it affects participants' learning and possible attrition; and 7) importance of social learning in LMOOCs. Nevertheless, LMOOCs is still an emerging field in need of further serious studies.
The Use of ICT for the Teaching and Learning of English as a Second Language in Nigeria: The "What", "Why", and "How"

Abstract:In language teaching, the use of computers has been on since before the coming of the internet. Later computer assisted language learning (CALL) developed and concerned itself with the pedagogical applications of the technology. Information Communication Technology (IT) which is an offshoot of science through its internet and computer-mediated communication (CMC) has gone beyond science to broaden the lexical inventories of the English language. It is against this backdrop that this paper tends to conduct a study on computer-mediated communication with a focus on the teaching and learning of the English language in Nigeria. The study aims to bring to the fore the issues and challenges associated with this new normal. The study also examines the benefits associated with the use of this technology in the teaching and learning of the English language. The study also employs Direct Participatory Observation and a questionnaire as means of gathering data for the research. Famous Mclunnham’s Technological Determinism Theory was employed as the theoretical framework of analysis. On the whole, the paper discovered among other things that the use of CMC made students confident and gives them the zeal of being online and wanting to discover and learn via the medium of computer-mediated communication. The study concludes that the use of this method of teaching and learning English in Nigeria has to be encouraged for efficiency and exactness for both in the teaching and learning of English in Nigeria. Solutions and recommendations were proffered to ameliorate the challenges associated with the use of these technological devices.
Mobility and language learning: A case study on the use of an online platform to learn Chinese as a foreign language

Abstract:Mobile technologies and mobile learners have transformed the way people learn languages. In particular, they give rise to a new form of language learning: the use of online language learning platforms, a kind of virtual learning environment that offers learning opportunities that are mobile, social and multimodal (Jones and Hafner, 2012; Richards, 2015). While existing research has tended to focus either on the benefits of using mobile technologies in the teaching and learning of languages or on how mobile learners, who have different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, harness the benefits of technologies to learn new languages, few studies address both perspectives. This paper reports on a study of self-directed language learning in online platforms. In particular, I explore how mobile technologies such as online language learning platforms shape the learning practices of mobile learners, and how mobile learners take advantage of the affordances of these online platforms to achieve their learning goals, in the context of learning Chinese as a foreign language. Through in-depth analyses of two case studies, I argue that while mobile technologies seem to encourage a clear distinction between online and offline learning, in reality the boundary is less clear-cut as mobile learners bring with them a set of offline learning practices from their own experiences to the online environment. A more critical view therefore has to be taken when researching online and offline learning practices.

Abstract:The range of technological applications in different educational contexts makes it necessary for continued inquiry into online language learning (OLL), especially in relation to its impact on different learner populations whose perception and acceptance of OLL can vary across settings. This pilot study involved 66 Chinese students in a Hong Kong university and examined their OLL experience in online reading and listening activities. Results of the study suggest the easy availability of internet resources can greatly enhance students’ OLL experience, while raising four challenges in the areas of online materials development, student motivation, pedagogy-technology interface, and intercultural communicative competence. Possible ways of tackling such challenges are outlined. The article concludes with a view that successful OLL needs to be predicated on a tripartite framework of hardware, software and humanware.

Abstract:In the last few decades, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) applications have been shaping the field of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) paved the way for ubiquitous learning. The advent of new technologies in the early 21st century also added a social dimension to ICT that allowed for Networked Learning (NL). Given that language learning is fundamentally a socio-cultural experience, networked learning capabilities have provided the potential for language learning in community settings. This has revitalized the earlier frameworks provided by CALL. NL has empowered language learners today to connect globally, to access Open Educational Resources, and to self-regulate their learning processes beyond the scope of traditional curricula. In parallel, the rising pervasiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications and their relevance to language learning has led CALL to branch out into Intelligent CALL (ICALL). The first section of this article provides a brief historical overview of CALL, examines it through the lens of ICT, networked learning, and open access. The second section focuses on the implications of AI for creating new trends in second language education, the challenge for providing customization at scale, and raises important issues related to transparency and privacy for future research.

Abstract:This paper examines the opportunities, challenges, and perspectives of teaching and learning English in the digital era. With the rapid advancement of technology and its integration into educational settings, English language instruction has experienced significant transformations. The paper explores the potential benefits of digital tools and platforms in language learning while also addressing the challenges in the digital language classroom. Based on a review of previous studies and a comprehensive analysis, it further discusses the evolving roles of teachers and learners in this digital landscape and presents strategies for effective implementation and utilization of technology in English language education. The findings offer to share expertise, disseminate the lessons learned, and recommend best practices collected from scholarship. Sustainable solutions to specific problems and perspectives to cope with future challenges have been proposed with the recommendation of effective systems such as Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Mobile Phone Assisted Language Learning (MPALL) and other sophisticated tools that fit some specific situations.

Analyzing online comments: a language-awareness approach to cultivating digital literacies

Abstract:The advent of technology has made the Internet a fertile ground for much literacy learning to take place, and how to use the Internet discourse for language learning remains to be explored. The current study adopted a language-awareness approach to raise students’ awareness of the forms and function of online language. A sample online comment thread was prepared to lead the participants to begin to observe and analyze online language before they collected their online comments to build their personal portfolios. It was found that the participants mainly resorted to Facebook (58.0%) and YouTube (35.8%) to find comments; 69.1% of their topics were related to news stories while the remaining can be categorized as entertainment and personal interests. Students reported to have learned the importance of taking responsibility for one’s words online. In terms of knowledge, many students gained new knowledge about slang and world issues. They also felt that learning to read and evaluate online comments was an enjoyable and empowering experience. This study concludes with a few suggestions for future research to further investigate the potential benefits of incorporating online comments into language pedagogy.

Abstract:Abstract In the digital era, the integration of computers into educational practices, particularly in English language teaching, has progressively become ubiquitous. English language education, a crucial component of contemporary pedagogy, has experienced significant evolution through the implementation of computer-assisted instruction. This study endeavors to delineate the landscape of research hotspots in computer-assisted English teaching by employing knowledge mapping techniques. It further elucidates the methodological framework of keyword co-occurrence mapping. An analytical review of the historical progression, emerging trends, and prior challenges in the domain of computer-assisted English teaching is conducted. Findings indicate that the prominence of terms such as “computer-aided English teaching,” “distance learning,” and “online teaching” initially surged but subsequently declined, with peaks observed in 2000 and 2007, respectively. Conversely, “mobile learning” has shown a consistent upward trajectory, culminating in a peak of 1051 citations in 2018. Historically, computer-assisted English teaching faced engagement challenges, with 72% of students not participating actively in learning. Presently, there is a marked improvement in this domain, with 80.0% of teachers now regularly utilizing computers to facilitate English instruction. The ongoing development of computer-assisted English teaching aims to enhance both the intelligence and efficiency of instructional processes in the future.

Abstract:With the rapid development of information technology, the network has become a part of the daily life of current college students. The use of network tools to develop college English teaching platform is necessary and beneficial. Various versions of online English teaching platforms have been developed in China and used by many Chinese universities. Through research and analysis, according to the theory of communicative learning, this paper puts forward the design plan of English university teaching platform for Chinese colleges and universities. The article first summarizes the research origin and importance of the college English online teaching platform. It then outlines the current situation of college English online teaching platforms and provides a demonstration of a specific platform for a specific teaching network. This article discusses the research on deep learning using advanced technology on college English teaching platforms. Through questionnaires, group discussions, in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and other research methods, we can understand the current situation of school computer networks from a macro perspective. It integrates foreign language courses and the problems teachers and students encounter in the process. The results show that 56% of the students said that this method can promote their own learning, and 12% of the students think that there will be no good learning effect. For this new test method, 86% of the teachers think that it can achieve a certain learning effect, which is a good similar to an adaptive test method.

Exploring Sociocultural Theory Application in Online Language Courses

Abstract:Second language education is a necessary admission requirement for many universities across the U.S., as well as a graduation requirement for several high schools. The increasing presence of online education has increased the availability of secondary and post-secondary world language courses in online and blended formats, yet a challenge associated with online language coursework lies in addressing the sociocultural aspect of learning a language. In this type of learning format, it is critical to consider Sociocultural Theory (SCT) concepts such as self-regulation, zone of proximal development (ZPD), and scaffolding. For instance, Zhang (2013) explores teacher-student collaboration in online courses; and Cappellini (2016) has researched scaffolding and the role students assume in the learner community when learning via telecollaboration.The SCT theoretical framework guided Brigham Young University in developing blended and fully online German courses. The courses use authentic cultural materials, unique technological resources, and social-media-style interventions (synchronous and asynchronous) to provide extensive scaffolding of learning material and a collaborative student environment. SCT-based interventions in the online courses included sentence modeling, use of discussion boards, film recitations, and conversation cafe (an online real-time speaking lab). This paper reports on the approach the university took to the course development, the sociocultural aspects of the interventions implemented, and preliminary evaluative findings regarding the effectiveness of the interventions. Preliminary findings suggest a slight improvement of student proficiency, as demonstrated in German 201 final exam scores and German 202 pre-test scores; however further research and analysis is necessary to validate these preliminary findings.

Abstract:When new technologies arrive they come with promises to solve our problems. Technology has offered ways to get information faster, to communicate and collaborate synchronously, asynchronously. In our teaching we have crafted online learning modules to affords flexibility for students so that they can engage with our disciplines outside of the confines of physical classrooms. Smart phone technology allows us to ‘google’ information (and misinformation) from anywhere - provided you have a smart device, a WIFI connection and a service provider that covers your location. In short, technologies have allowed us to work faster, and facilitated the expansion of the digital asset realm, and they have served as catalysts for innovation and thinking differently about education. With the adoption of each technological implementation I ask both “what are the gains?” and “what are we losing?”. I offer my reflections on three technologies. Email: When I first started as an associate lecturer there was time to have a tea break in a tearoom. Email – now so ubiquitous - replaced the ‘memo’. Something that was implemented for efficient communication has become overtly time consuming and administratively burdensome. The need for rich free-flowing incidental conversation in academia remains but the spaces in time to have these conversations has vanished. On balance: initially a gain, more recently a loss. Internet: The WorldWide Web started to gained traction in higher education in the mid-late 1990s. Teaching became ‘blended’ as many of us starting to create digital learning resources for our students in ‘flexible’ learning environments. Hours were invested in converting analogue images and sound to digital assets. Analogue assessments were changed to fit the digital environment. Having students record their observations in scientific drawings was problematic. With Web 2.0 (~ 2000) came rise of Learning Management Systems and it became easier to create, deliver and manage online quizzes. Scrutinising how students interacted with online resources became popular. Twenty years on and I rely on the online environment to teach, however I still cling to face-to-face teaching as I crave the conversations I have in class. On balance: undecided. mApps: In 2012 I partnered with an undergraduate student and professional staff on a mApp – CampusFlora; we hit the AppStore in 2013 (Author et al., 2014). Designing an app in partnership with students (aligned with students-as-partners approach Healey et al., 2014) allowed us to become ‘collaborators’ rather thana ‘students’ and ‘staff’ (Author et al., 2019). Here, technology acted as a collaboration catalyst shifted from academic-led learning design to student-staff co-design. On balance: a gain. Developing digital literacy in our students is important - not just being able to use technology, but by contributing to resource creation. Co-creating with students is now where I like to spend my time.

Abstract:The fact that languages are living organisms that evolve and vary as a result of different factors, including societal vicissitudes, cultural influences, technological advancements, migration and intercultural communication, among others, requires a continued effort to identify, characterize and represent the new lexical forms and meanings that emerge in various contexts and domains. Lexicologists and lexicographers thus need to always take on new challenges in their attempt to adequately describe and map our ever-changing language landscapes. Not only does everyday language change but also languages for special purposes (LSP) are subject to variation. On the one hand, new terms and senses are incorporated into already existing lexicons, while, on the other hand, micro-languages with a rich variety of novel lexical items keep appearing. Some cases in point are ecotourism discourse which has been accelerated by recent greater awareness of the impact of human activities on the environment (Penz & Fill, 2022); the language of digital technology, now that societies and technologies have become increasingly interconnected (Würschinger, 2021); certain medical talk, as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic (Salazar & Wild, 2022), to mention just a few areas of lexical innovation.

Abstract:The rapid advancements in technology have transformed the landscape of language teaching, presenting new opportunities and challenges for educators. As educators seek to enhance the effectiveness of language instruction, the integration of technologies such as digital resources and online platforms has become essential in fostering student engagement and promoting language competence. The purpose of this study was to examine the integration of technology into language teaching by exploring the literature on the use of technology in English as a Foreign Language learning. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, the researchers adopted a descriptive qualitative approach to gain insights into how EFL students perceive and engage with the use of technology in their language learning. This investigation aimed to uncover the benefits, challenges, and emerging trends associated with incorporating digital tools and resources into EFL curricula, ultimately informing best practices for the effective integration of technology to support and enhance language acquisition. The adoption of innovative digital tools not only caters to diverse learning styles but also enhances interaction and understanding among students, ultimately leading to a more immersive learning experience in the language classroom.

Abstract:This study explores participant views regarding the integration of Internet tools in language learning activities. The descriptive study has illustrated the perceptions of a class of senior high school students regarding language learning in a technology environment. The subjects were 44 10th-grade male students and their teacher who together joined a technology-enhanced language learning (TELL) project in Taiwan known as “Advanced Joint English Teaching” (AJET). The students participated in six Internet-based teaching activities; group e-mailing, a Web-based course, an e-mail writing program, English homepage design, video-conferencing and chat room discussion. This study found that the AJET project provided the students with an opportunity to experience new technologies; learners experienced the pleasure of learning and thus increased their learning possibilities. The students liked and approved of learning English using the Internet, but had differing opinions about its benefits. The study demonstrated that learners bring different perspectives to TELL, and that learners who are passively oriented towards Internet English learning require careful guidance from pedagogical applications to this approach. Making students aware that learning English through multimedia technology demands new learning strategies and self-directed learning is a crucial first step. Some pedagogical suggestions are provided for effectively using computer networking in second- and foreign language classrooms.

This essay begins by briefly overviewing this research as well as investigations into teacher learning related to online instruction, with a specific focus on studies grounded in sociocultural theory (Lantolf, 2000, Sociocultural theory and second language learning , Oxford University Press, Oxford, England; Vygotsky, 1986, Thought and language , MIT Press, Cambridge, MA). The main takeaways from this study are exemplified through the teacher professional development efforts currently underway at the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition at the University of Minnesota. The essay concludes with recommendations for crafting a research‐informed professional development program for online language instruction.

Abstract:This article is devoted to the historical evolution of educational technology, from the printing revolution of the 15th century to the rise of modern online education, reviewing how the printing press triggered the democratization of education and laid the foundations for the establishment of a public education system; examines in detail how advances in electronic technology in the 20th century, including television and computers, have greatly expanded the scope of education; examines the development of online education made quality educational resources accessible to students worldwide.
