Abstract:In the past two decades, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) has emerged as an innovative new method in quantum chemistry relying on a theoretical framework very different from that of traditional electronic structure approaches. The development of the quantum chemical DMRG has been remarkably fast: it has already become one of the reference approaches for large-scale multiconfigurational calculations. This perspective discusses the major features of DMRG, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses also in comparison to other novel approaches. The method is presented following its historical development, starting from its original formulation up to its most recent applications. Possible routes to recover dynamical correlation are discussed in detail. Emerging new fields of applications of DMRG are explored, in particular its time-dependent formulation and the application to vibrational spectroscopy.

Abstract:The application of renormalization group methods to microscopic nuclear many-body calculations is discussed. We present the solution of the renormalization group equations in the particle-hole channels for neutron matter and the application to S-wave pairing. Furthermore, we point out that the inclusion of tensor and spin-orbit forces leads to spin non-conserving effective interactions in nuclear matter.

Abstract:The density-matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) has established itself over the last decade as the leading method for the simulation of the statics and dynamics of one-dimensional strongly correlated quantum lattice systems. In the further development of the method, the realization that DMRG operates on a highly interesting class of quantum states, so-called matrix product states (MPS), has allowed a much deeper understanding of the inner structure of the DMRG method, its further potential and its limitations. In this paper, I want to give a detailed exposition of current DMRG thinking in the MPS language in order to make the advisable implementation of the family of DMRG algorithms in exclusively MPS terms transparent. I then move on to discuss some directions of potentially fruitful further algorithmic development: while DMRG is a very mature method by now, I still see potential for further improvements, as exemplified by a number of recently introduced algorithms.

Abstract:We review the variational principle in the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, which maximizes an approximate partition function within a restricted degrees of freedom; at zero temperature, DMRG mini- mizes the ground state energy. The variational principle is applied to two-dimensional (2D) classical lattice models, where the density matrix is expressed as a product of corner transfer matrices. (CTMs) DMRG related fields and future directions of DMRG are briefly discussed.

Abstract:In nuclear physics, Density Functional Theory (DFT) provides the basis for state-of-the art studies of ground-state properties of heavy nuclei. However, the direct relation of the density functional underlying these calculations and the microscopic nuclear forces is not yet fully understood. We present a combination of DFT and Renormalization Group (RG) techniques which allows to study selfbound many-body systems from microscopic interactions. We discuss its application with the aid of systems of identical fermions interacting via a long-range attractive and short-range repulsive two-body force in one dimension. We compute ground-state energies, intrinsic densities, and density correlation functions of these systems and compare our results to those obtained from other methods. In particular, we show how energies of excited states as well as the absolute square of the ground-state wave function can be extracted from the correlation functions within our approach. The relation between many-body perturbation theory and our DFT-RG approach is discussed and illustrated with the aid of the calculation of the second-order energy correction for a system of $N$ identical fermions interacting via a general two-body interaction. Moreover, we discuss the control of spuriously emerging fermion self-interactions in DFT studies within our framework. In general, our approach may help to guide the development of energy functionals for future quantitative DFT studies of heavy nuclei from microscopic interactions.

Abstract:The ab initio density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method has been well-established and has become one of the most accurate numerical methods for the precise electronic structure solution of large active spaces. In the past few years, to capture the missing dynamic correlation, various post-DMRG approaches have been proposed through the combination of DMRG and multireference quantum chemical methods or density functional theory. With this in mind, this work provides a brief overview of ab initio DMRG principles and the new developments within post-DMRG methods. For clarity, post-DMRG methods are classified into two main categories depending on whether high-order n-electron reduced density matrices are used, and their merits and disadvantages are properly discussed. Finally, we conclude by discussing unsolved bottlenecks and giving development perspectives of post-DMRG approaches, which are expected to yield quantitative descriptions of complex electronic structures in large strongly correlated molecules and materials.

Abstract:Substantial progress of the time-dependent density matrix renormalisation group (t-DMRG) method in the recent 15 years is reviewed in this paper. By integrating the time evolution with the sweep procedures in density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG), t-DMRG provides an efficient tool for real-time simulations of the quantum dynamics for one-dimensional (1D) or quasi-1D strongly correlated systems with a large number of degrees of freedom. In the illustrative applications, the t-DMRG approach is applied to investigate the nonadiabatic processes in realistic chemical systems, including exciton dissociation and triplet fission in polymers and molecular aggregates as well as internal conversion in pyrazine molecule.

Abstract:In the large-momentum effective field theory approach to parton physics, the matrix elements of nonlocal operators of quark and gluon fields, linked by straight Wilson lines in a spatial direction, are calculated in lattice quantum chromodynamics as a function of hadron momentum. Using the heavy-quark effective theory formalism, we show a multiplicative renormalization of these operators at all orders in perturbation theory, both in dimensional and lattice regularizations. The result provides a theoretical basis for extracting parton properties through properly renormalized observables in Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:We propose a novel many-body framework combining the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) with the valence-space (VS) formulation of the in-medium similarity renormalization group. This hybrid scheme admits for favorable computational scaling in large-space calculations compared to direct diagonalization. The capacity of the VS-DMRG approach is highlighted in ab initio calculations of neutron-rich nickel isotopes based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions, and allows us to perform converged ab initio computations of ground and excited state energies. We also study orbital entanglement in the VS-DMRG, and investigate nuclear correlation effects in oxygen, neon, and magnesium isotopes. The explored entanglement measures reveal nuclear shell closures as well as pairing correlations.

Quantum Proton Effects from Density Matrix Renormalization Group Calculations

Abstract:We recently introduced [J. Chem. Phys. 152 2020, 204103] the nuclear-electronic all-particle density matrix renormalization group method (NEAP-DMRG) to solve the molecular Schrödinger equation, based on a stochastically optimized orbital basis, without invoking the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. In this work, we combine the DMRG with nuclear-electronic Hartree-Fock (NEHF-DMRG), treating nuclei and electrons on the same footing. Inter- and intra-species correlations are described within the DMRG without truncating the excitation degree of the full configuration interaction wave function. We extend the concept of orbital entanglement and mutual information to nuclear-electronic wave functions and demonstrate that they are reliable metrics to detect strong correlation effects. We apply NEHF-DMRG to the HeHHe$^+$ molecular ion, to obtain accurate proton densities, ground-state total energies, and vibrational transition frequencies by comparison with state-of-the-art data obtained with grid-based approaches and modern configuration interaction methods. For HCN, we improve on the accuracy of the latter approaches with respect to both ground-state absolute energy and proton density which is a major challenge for multi-reference nuclear-electronic state-of-the-art methods.

Renormalization of many-body effective field theory

Abstract:The renormalization of the effective field theories (EFTs) in many-body systems is the most pressing and challenging problem in modern nuclear ab initio calculation. For general non-relativistic EFTs, we prove that the renormalization group (RG) invariance can be achieved if and only if all single-particle momenta are regulated with a universal cutoff \Lambda. For a numerical demonstration, we construct a series of N^{2}LO chiral forces with \Lambda varying from 250 MeV to 400 MeV. With all low energy constants fixed in two- and three-nucleon systems, we reproduce the experimental binding energies of ^{4}He and ^{16}O nearly independently of \Lambda. In contrast, all recent nuclear EFT constructions regulate the relative momenta for Galilean invariance, thus inherently break the RG invariance. This explains the unpleasantly strong cutoff-dependences observed in recent ab initio calculations. Our method can also be used to build RG-invariant EFTs with non-perturbative interactions.

Abstract:Ab initio density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method is well established and has become one of the most accurate numerical methods for the precise electronic structure solution of large active spaces. In the past few years, to capture the missing dynamic correlation, various post-DMRG approaches have been proposed through the combination of DMRG and multireference quantum chemical methods or density functional theory (DFT). However, problems also arise in the use of ab initio DMRG and post-DMRG methods to the “real-world” chemistry applications because of the improper description of the strongly correlated subsystem’s chemical environment (e.g., a solvent environment or biological metalloenzyme’s backbone). In this chapter, we first introduce the fundamentals for multireference quantum chemical calculations. Then, we discuss various post-DMRG approaches through DMRG’s integration with multireference configuration interaction, multireference perturbation theory, multireference coupled cluster, as well as DFT. Finally, treatments for describing embedded chemical environment are introduced and a summary and outlook is given.

Abstract:Abstract Over the past decades, the relativistic density functional theory has been greatly developed and widely applied to investigate a variety of nuclear phenomena. In this paper, we briefly review the concept of covariant density functional theory in nuclear physics with a few latest applications in describing nuclear ground-state and excitation properties as well as nuclear dynamics. Moreover, attempts to build a microscopic and universal density functional are also discussed in terms of the successful fully self-consistent relativistic Brueckner–Hartree–Fock calculations.
Functional renormalization group studies of nuclear and neutron matter

Abstract:Functional renormalization group (FRG) methods applied to calculations of isospin-symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter as well as neutron matter are reviewed. The approach is based on a chiral Lagrangian expressed in terms of nucleon and meson degrees of freedom as appropriate for the hadronic phase of QCD with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. Fluctuations beyond mean-field approximation are treated solving Wetterich's FRG flow equations. Nuclear thermodynamics and the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition are investigated in detail, both in symmetric matter and as a function of the proton fraction in asymmetric matter. The equations of state at zero temperature of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter are found to be in good agreement with advanced ab-initio many-body computations. Contacts with perturbative many-body approaches (in-medium chiral perturbation theory) are discussed. As an interesting test case, the density dependence of the pion mass in the medium is investigated. The question of chiral symmetry restoration in nuclear and neutron matter is addressed. A stabilization of the phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry is found to persist up to high baryon densities once fluctuations beyond mean-field are included. Neutron star matter including beta equilibrium is discussed under the aspect of the constraints imposed by the existence of two-solar-mass neutron stars.

Abstract:The physical properties of a quantum many-body system can, in principle, be determined by diagonalizing the respective Hamiltonian, but the dimensions of its matrix representation scale exponentially with the number of degrees of freedom. Hence, only small systems that are described through simple models can be tackled via exact diagonalization. To overcome this limitation, numerical methods based on the renormalization group paradigm that restrict the quantum many-body problem to a manageable subspace of the exponentially large full Hilbert space have been put forth. A striking example is the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), which has become the reference numerical method to obtain the low-energy properties of one-dimensional quantum systems with short-range interactions. Here, we provide a pedagogical introduction to DMRG, presenting both its original formulation and its modern tensor-network-based version. This colloquium sets itself apart from previous contributions in two ways. First, didactic code implementations are provided to bridge the gap between conceptual and practical understanding. Second, a concise and self-contained introduction to the tensor network methods employed in the modern version of DMRG is given, thus allowing the reader to effortlessly cross the deep chasm between the two formulations of DMRG without having to explore the broad literature on tensor networks. We expect this pedagogical review to find wide readership amongst students and researchers who are taking their first steps in numerical simulations via DMRG.

Abstract:Thanks to the high compression of the matrix productstate (MPS)form of the wave function and the efficient site-by-site iterativesweeping optimization algorithm, the density matrix normalizationgroup (DMRG) and its time-dependent variant (TD-DMRG) have been establishedas powerful computational tools in accurately simulating the electronicstructure and quantum dynamics of strongly correlated molecules witha large number (10(1-2)) of quantum degrees of freedom(active orbitals or vibrational modes). However, the quantitativecharacterization of the quantum many-body behaviors of realistic stronglycorrelated systems requires a further consideration of the interactionbetween the embedded active subsystem and the remaining correlatedenvironment, e.g., a larger number (10(2-3)) of externalorbitals in electronic structure or infinite condensed-phase phononicmodes in nucleus dynamics. To this end, we introduced three new post-DMRGand TD-DMRG approaches, namely (1) DMRG2sCI-MRCI and DMRG2sCI-ENPTby the reconstruction of selected configuration interaction (sCI)type of compact reference function from DMRG coefficients and theuse of externally contracted MRCI (multireference configuration interaction)and Epstein-Nesbet perturbation theory (ENPT), without recourseto the expensive high order n-electron reduced densitymatrices (n-RDMs). (2) DMRG combined with RR-MRCI(renormalized residue-based MRCI), which improves the computationalaccuracy and efficiency of internally contracted (ic) MRCI by renormalizingthe contracted bases with small-sized buffer environment(s) of a fewexternal orbitals as probes based on quantum information theory. (3)HM (hierarchical mapping)-TD-DMRG in which a large environment isreduced to a small number of renormalized environmental modes (whichaccounts for the most vital system-environment interactions)through stepwise mapping transformation. These advances extend theefficacy of highly accurate DMRG/TD-DMRG computations to the quantitativecharacterization of the electronic structure and quantum dynamicsin realistic strongly correlated systems coupled with large environmentsand are reviewed in this paper.

Abstract:We investigate convergence of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) in the thermodynamic limit for gapless systems. Although the DMRG correlations always decay exponentially in the thermodynamic limit, the correlation length at the DMRG fixed-point scales as $\xi \sim m^{1.3}$, where $m$ is the number of kept states, indicating the existence of algebraic order for the exact system. The single-particle excitation spectrum is calculated, using a Bloch-wave ansatz, and we prove that the Bloch-wave ansatz leads to the symmetry $E(k)=E(\pi -k)$ for translationally invariant half-integer spin-systems with local interactions. Finally, we provide a method to compute overlaps between ground states obtained from different DMRG calculations.
