Abstract:We investigate the quantum phase transitions of spin systems in one and two dimensions by employing trace distance and multipartite entanglement along with real-space quantum renormalization group method. As illustration examples, a one-dimensional and a two-dimensional XY models are considered. It is shown that the quantum phase transitions of these spin-chain systems can be revealed by the singular behaviors of the first derivatives of renormalized trace distance and multipartite entanglement in the thermodynamics limit. Moreover, we find the renormalized trace distance and multipartite entanglement obey certain universal exponential-type scaling laws in the vicinity of the quantum critical points.

Abstract:We investigate the Dirac equation in the semiclassical limit \hbar --> 0. A semiclassical propagator and a trace formula are derived and are shown to be determined by the classical orbits of a relativistic point particle. In addition, two phase factors enter, one of which can be calculated from the Thomas precession of a classical spin transported along the particle orbits. For the second factor we provide an interpretation in terms of dynamical and geometric phases.

Periodic orbit theory of Bethe-integrable quantum systems: an $N$-particle Berry-Tabor trace formula

Abstract:One of the fundamental results of semiclassical theory is the existence of trace formulae showing how spectra of quantum mechanical systems emerge from massive interference among amplitudes related with time-periodic structures of the corresponding classical limit. If it displays the properties of Hamiltonian integrability, this connection is given by the celebrated Berry-Tabor trace formula, and the periodic structures it is built on are KAM tori supporting closed trajectories in phase space. Here we show how to extend this connection into the domain of quantum many-body systems displaying integrability in the sense of the Bethe ansatz, where a classical limit cannot be rigorously defined due to the presence of singular potentials. Formally following the original derivation of Berry and Tabor [1, 2], but applied to the Bethe equations without underlying classical structure, we obtain a many-particle trace formula for the density of states of N interacting bosons on a ring, the Lieb-Liniger model. Our semiclassical expressions are in excellent agreement with quantum mechanical results for $N$ = 2, 3 and 4 particles. For N = 2 we relate our results to the quantization of billiards with mixed boundary conditions. Our work paves the way towards the treatment of the important class of integrable many-body systems by means of semiclassical trace formulae pioneered by Michael Berry in the single-particle context.

Abstract:We consider compact metric graphs with an arbitrary self adjoint realisation of the differential Laplacian. After discussing spectral properties of Laplacians, we prove several versions of trace formulae, relating Laplace spectra to sums over periodic orbits on the graph. This includes trace formulae with, respectively, absolutely and conditionally convergent periodic orbit sums; the convergence depending on properties of the test functions used. We also prove a trace formula for the heat kernel and provide small-$t$ asymptotics for the trace of the heat kernel.

The relative trace formula in electromagnetic scattering and boundary layer operators

Abstract:This paper establishes trace-formulae for a class of operators defined in terms of the functional calculus for the Laplace operator on divergence-free vector fields with relative and absolute boundary conditions on Lipschitz domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Spectral and scattering theory of the absolute and relative Laplacian is equivalent to the spectral analysis and scattering theory for Maxwell equations. The trace-formulae allow for unbounded functions in the functional calculus that are not admissible in the Birman-Krein formula. In special cases the trace-formula reduces to a determinant formula for the Casimir energy that is being used in the physics literature for the computation of the Casimir energy for objects with metallic boundary conditions. Our theorems justify these formulae in the case of electromagnetic scattering on Lipschitz domains, give a rigorous meaning to them as the trace of certain trace-class operators, and clarifies the function spaces on which the determinants need to be taken.

Abstract:We show that formulas differing from classical analogues of rational trace formulas for algebraic-geometric potentials occur in the theory of finite-gap integration of spectral equations. The new formulas contain transcendental modular functions and hypergeometric series. They result in transcendental relations for theta functions.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate a non-relativistic trace anomaly and its impact on the low-temperature equation of state in spatially one-dimensional three-component fermionic systems with a three-body interaction, which exhibit a non-trivial three-body crossover from a bound trimer gas to dense fermionic matter with increasing density. By applying the $G$-matrix approach to the three-body interaction, we obtain the analytical expression for the ground-state equation of state relevant to the high-density degenerate regime and thereby address how the three-body contact or, equivalently, the trace anomaly emerges. The analytical results are compared with the recent quantum Monte Carlo data. Our study of the trace anomaly and the sound speed could have some relevance to the physics of hadron-quark crossover in compact stars.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:We give an abstract formulation of the Dixmier trace formula for the density of states. This recovers prior versions and allows us to provide a Dixmier trace formula for the density of states of second order elliptic differential operators on manifolds of bounded geometry satisfying a certain geometric condition. This formula gives a new perspective on Roe's index on open manifolds.

Semiclassical Non-Trace Type Formulas for Matrix Element Fluctuations and Weighted Densities of States

Abstract:Densities of states weighted with the diagonal matrix elements of two operators A and B, i.e., rho^(A,B)(E) = sum_n <n|A|n><n|B|n> delta(E-E_n) cannot, in general, be written as a trace formula, and therefore no simple extension of semiclassical trace formulas is known for this case. However, from the high resolution analysis of quantum spectra in the semiclassical regime we find strong evidence that weighting the delta-functions in the quantum mechanical density of states with the product of diagonal matrix elements, <n|A|n><n|B|n>, is equivalent to weighting the periodic orbit contributions in the semiclassical periodic orbit sum with the product of the periodic orbit means, <A>_p<B>_p, of the classical observables A and B. Results are presented for the hydrogen atom in a magnetic field for both the chaotic and near-integrable regime, and for the circle billiard.

Trace formula for quantum chaotic systems with geometrical symmetries and spin

Abstract:We derive a Gutzwiller-type trace formula for quantum chaotic systems that accounts for both particle spin precession and discrete geometrical symmetries. This formula generalises previous results that were obtained either for systems with spin [1,2] or for systems with symmetries [3,4], but not for a combination of both. The derivation requires not only a combination of methodologies for these two settings, but also the treatment of new effects in the form of double groups and spin components of symmetry operations. The resulting trace formula expresses the level density of subspectra associated to irreducible representations of the group of unitary symmetries in terms of periodic orbits in the system's fundamental domain. We also derive a corresponding expression for the spectral determinant. In a follow-up paper [5] we will show that our formula allows to study the impact of geometrical symmetries and spin on spectral statistics.

Abstract:We derive a trace formula for the splitting-weighted density of states suitable for chaotic potentials with isolated symmetric wells. This formula is based on complex orbits which tunnel through classically forbidden barriers. The theory is applicable whenever the tunnelling is dominated by isolated orbits, a situation which applies to chaotic systems but also to certain near-integrable ones. It is used to analyse a specific two-dimensional potential with chaotic dynamics. Mean behaviour of the splittings is predicted by an orbit with imaginary action. Oscillations around this mean are obtained from a collection of related orbits whose actions have nonzero real part.

Abstract:A derivation step in a Graph Interpolation Grammar has the effect of scanning an input token. This feature, which aims at emulating the incrementality of the natural parser, restricts the formal power of GIGs. This contrasts with the fact that the derivation mechanism involves a context-sensitive device similar to tree adjunction in TAGs. The combined effect of input-driven derivation and restricted context-sensitiveness would be conceivably unfortunate if it turned out that Graph Interpolation Languages did not subsume Context Free Languages while being partially context-sensitive. This report sets about examining relations between CFGs and GIGs, and shows that GILs are a proper superclass of CFLs. It also brings out a strong equivalence between CFGs and GIGs for the class of CFLs. Thus, it lays the basis for meaningfully investigating the amount of context-sensitiveness supported by GIGs, but leaves this investigation for further research.

Abstract:In the present paper, we build up trace formulas for both the linear Hamiltonian systems and Sturm-Liouville systems. The formula connects the monodromy matrix of a symmetric periodic orbit with the infinite sum of eigenvalues of the Hessian of the action functional. A natural application is to study the non-degeneracy of linear Hamiltonian systems. Precisely, by the trace formula, we can give an estimation for the upper bound such that the non-degeneracy preserves. Moreover, we could estimate the relative Morse index by the trace formula. Consequently, a series of new stability criteria for the symmetric periodic orbits is given. As a concrete application, the trace formula is used to study the linear stability of elliptic Lagrangian solutions of the classical planar three-body problem. It is well known that the linear stability of elliptic Lagrangian solutions depends on the mass parameter $\bb=27(m_1m_2+m_2m_3+m_3m_1)/(m_1+m_2+m_3)^2\in [0,9]$ and the eccentricity $e\in [0,1)$. Based on the trace formula, we estimate the stable region and hyperbolic region of the elliptic Lagranian solutions.

Limit formulas for the trace of the functional calculus of quantum channels for $SU(2)$

Abstract:Lieb and Solovej \cite{liebsolBloch} studied traces of quantum channels, defined by the leading component in the decomposition of the tensor product of two irreducible representations of $SU(2)$, to establish a Wehrl-type inequality for integrals of convex functions of matrix coefficients. It is proved that the integral is the limit of the trace of the functional calculus of quantum channels. In this paper, we introduce new quantum channels for all the components in the tensor product and generalize their limit formula. We prove that the limit can be expressed using Berezin transforms.
