Abstract:Densities of states weighted with the diagonal matrix elements of two operators A and B, i.e., rho^(A,B)(E) = sum_n <n|A|n><n|B|n> delta(E-E_n) cannot, in general, be written as a trace formula, and therefore no simple extension of semiclassical trace formulas is known for this case. However, from the high resolution analysis of quantum spectra in the semiclassical regime we find strong evidence that weighting the delta-functions in the quantum mechanical density of states with the product of diagonal matrix elements, <n|A|n><n|B|n>, is equivalent to weighting the periodic orbit contributions in the semiclassical periodic orbit sum with the product of the periodic orbit means, <A>_p<B>_p, of the classical observables A and B. Results are presented for the hydrogen atom in a magnetic field for both the chaotic and near-integrable regime, and for the circle billiard.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is that in the semiclassical theory, the density of states weighted by the product of the diagonal matrix elements of two operators cannot be directly represented by the trace formula. Specifically, the density of states is weighted by the product of the diagonal matrix elements of two operators \(\hat{A}\) and \(\hat{B}\), that is: \[ \rho^{(A,B)}(E)=\sum_{n}\langle n|\hat{A}|n\rangle\langle n|\hat{B}|n\rangle\delta(E - E_{n}) \] It usually cannot be written in the form of a trace formula, so there is no simple semiclassical trace formula extension that can be used in this case. By analyzing the behavior of the quantum spectrum in the semiclassical region with high resolution, the author presents strong evidence indicating that the \(\delta\)-function in the density of quantum - mechanical states weighted by the product of the diagonal matrix elements is equivalent to the product of the periodic - orbit averages of the corresponding classical observables weighted in the semiclassical periodic orbits. This finding is of great significance for the study of matrix - element fluctuations in the semiclassical theory and the development of semiclassical quantization techniques. The main contribution of the paper lies in proposing a new non - trace - type semiclassical formula for calculating this weighted density of states and verifying the validity of these formulas by numerical methods. Specific applications include the chaotic and nearly integrable regions of the hydrogen atom in a magnetic field, as well as the disc - billiard system. These results not only provide new tools for the semiclassical theory but also lay the foundation for further theoretical development and application.
