Abstract:Performance analysis is playing an indispensable role in design and evaluation for on-chip networks. In former studies, the end-to-end delay bound is calculated by the equivalent service curve method based on network calculus when resource sharing happens. However, in this paper, we propose a composable method to get the bound. This method uses the aggregated local arrival curve to get the local delay bound first, then calculates the end-to-end bound by summing up local bounds. This method solves the scalability problem and largely decreases the computation complexity compared with the former method.

Abstract:In complex systems, external parameters often determine the phase in which the system operates, i.e., its macroscopic behavior. For nearly a century, statistical physics has extensively studied systems' transitions across phases, (universal) critical exponents, and related dynamical properties. Here we consider the functionality of systems, notably operations in socio-technical ones, production in economic ones and, more generally, any schedule-based system, where timing is of crucial importance. We introduce a stylized model of delay propagation on temporal networks, where the magnitude of delay-mitigating buffer acts as a control parameter. The model exhibits {\it timeliness criticality}, a novel form of critical behavior. We characterize fluctuations near criticality, commonly referred to as ``avalanches'', and identify the corresponding critical exponents. The model exhibits timeliness criticality also when run on real-world temporal systems such as production networks. Additionally, we explore potential connections with the Mode-Coupling Theory of glasses, the depinning transition and the directed polymer problem.

Abstract:A distributed dynamic output feedback control is designed by Scardovi and Sepulchre for the synchronisation of a network of identical linear systems, known as agents in literature. The design is based on some mild conditions allowing switching topology. However, it assumes that there is no time delay in signal transfer between the neighbouring agents. In this study, the authors extend their work to include known time delay in communications. Furthermore, the authors' design has some special features: (i) the delay can be arbitrary and only need to be uniformly bounded by a constant; (ii) the conditions that time delay should be the same and sufficiently small in some literature are not required here; and (iii) no local buffer is required to store past data because of time-delay effect.

Abstract:<p>Many construction projects suffer delays. Their delay risk exacerbates as projects become larger with more complex schedules, because of the 'ripple effect', the phenomenon that an individual activity delay can spread, accumulate, and quantifiably impact the project finish. Its magnitude depends on the intricate network schedule structure. Yet criticality is currently assessed based on static durations. And the criticality index merely counts occurrences in probabilistic simulation runs without considering an underlying dependency structure. This research therefore establishes a methodology to systematically study and track the dynamic phenomenon of the ripple effect. Its contribution to the body of knowledge is threefold: First, it develops measures that connect the activity and project levels within the structure to quantify the aforementioned ripple effect. Second, it explores cruciality in a variety of schedule structures and concludes that the cruciality is additive on sequential paths and in proportion to their variances on merges of parallel paths. Links other than the default finish-to-start links may cause an activity directionality to change or even be bypassed, which its cruciality will reflect correctly. Third, it substantiates results by simulating a benchmark schedule to give practical suggestions for delay avoidance that consider how the network structure shapes schedule behavior.</p>

Synchronization Criteria for A Generalized Complex Delayed Dynamical Network Model

Abstract:It has been demonstrated that most complex networks display synchronization phenomena, and this problem has attracted great attention of various fields including science and engineering. In this paper, a generalized complex dynamical network model with time-varying delays was presented. Kronecker product was adopted to investigate this model. Moreover, several synchronization criteria were derived for both delay-independent and delay-dependent asymptotical stability. Especially, it has been shown that synchronization of such dynamical network is determined by the linear matrix inequality consisting of coupling configuration matrices, inner-coupling matrices and isolated cells. At last, illustrative examples were given to validate the above-acquired.

Abstract:The analysis of the dynamics of delays propagation is one of the major topics inside Air Transport Management research. Delays are generated by the elements of the system, but their propagation is a global process fostered by relationships inside the network. If the topology of such propagation process has been extensively studied in the literature, little attention has been devoted to the fact that such topology may have a dynamical nature. Here we differentiate between two phases of the system by applying two causality metrics, respectively describing the standard phase (i.e. propagation of normal delays) and a disrupted one (corresponding to abnormal and unexpected delays). We identify the critical point triggering the change of the topology of the system, in terms of delays magnitude, using a historical data set of flights crossing Europe in 2011. We anticipate that the proposed results will open new doors towards the understanding of the delay propagation dynamics and the mitigation of extreme events.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the delay-dependent synchronization criterion for stochastic complex networks with time delays. Firstly, expectations of stochastic cross terms containing the Itô integral are investigated by utilizing stochastic analysis techniques. In fact, in order to obtain less conservative delay-dependent conditions for stochastic delay systems including stochastic complex (or neural) networks with time delays, how to deal with expectations of these stochastic cross terms is an important problem, and expectations of these stochastic terms were not dealt with properly in many existing results. Then, based on the investigation of expectations of stochastic cross terms, this paper proposes a novel delay-dependent synchronization criterion for stochastic delayed complex networks. In the derivation process, the mathematical development avoids bounding stochastic cross terms. Thus, the method leads to a simple criterion and shows less conservatism. Finally, a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Wireless Network Scheduling with Discrete Propagation Delays: Theorems and Algorithms

Abstract:This paper focuses on the link scheduling problem in networks where signal delays between nodes are multiples of a time interval. To model such networks, a directed hypergraph is employed, along with an integer matrix that specifies the delays. The link scheduling problem is closely connected to the independent sets of the periodic hypergraph induced by the network model. However, due to the infinite number of vertices, it is impractical to enumerate the independent sets of the periodic hypergraph using generic graph algorithms. To tackle this challenge, a graphical approach is proposed in this paper. The link scheduling rate region is characterized using a finite directed graph called a scheduling graph, which is derived from the network model. A collision-free schedule of the network corresponds to a path in the scheduling graph, and the rate region is determined by the convex hull of the rate vectors associated with the cycles in the scheduling graph. Although existing cycle enumeration algorithms can be employed to calculate the rate region, their computational complexity becomes prohibitively high as the size of the scheduling graph grows exponentially with the number of network links. To address this issue, the dominance property of a special scheduling graph called the step-T scheduling graph is investigated. This property allows the utilization of specific subgraphs of the step-T scheduling graph to characterize the scheduling rate region, achieving a reduction in both the number of cycles and their lengths. For common problems such as calculating the rate region and maximizing a weighted sum of the scheduling rates, algorithms leveraging the dominance property are developed. These algorithms can be more efficient than using generic graph algorithms directly on the scheduling graphs.

End-to-end Delay Analysis for Networked Systems

Abstract:End-to-end delay measurement has been an essential element in the deployment of real-time services in networked systems. Traditional methods of delay measurement based on time domain analysis, however, are not efficient as the network scale and the complexity increase. We propose a novel theoretical framework to analyze the end-to-end delay distributions of networked systems from the frequency domain. We use a signal flow graph to model the delay distribution of a networked system and prove that the end-to-end delay distribution is indeed the inverse Laplace transform of the transfer function of the signal flow graph. Two efficient methods, Cramer’s rule-based method and the Mason gain rule-based method, are adopted to obtain the transfer function. By analyzing the time responses of the transfer function, we obtain the end-to-end delay distribution. Based on our framework, we propose an efficient method using the dominant poles of the transfer function to work out the bottleneck links of the network. Moreover, we use the framework to study the network protocol performance. Theoretical analysis and extensive evaluations show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Critical behavior of cascading failures in overloaded networks

Abstract:While network abrupt breakdowns due to overloads and cascading failures have been studied extensively, the critical exponents and the universality class of such phase transitions have not been discussed. Here, we study breakdowns triggered by failures of links and overloads in networks with a spatial characteristic link length $\zeta$. Our results indicate that this abrupt transition has features and critical exponents similar to those of interdependent networks, suggesting that both systems are in the same universality class. For weakly embedded systems (i.e., $\zeta$ of the order of the system size $L$) we observe a mixed-order transition, where the order parameter collapses following a long critical plateau. On the other hand, strongly embedded systems (i.e., $\zeta \ll L$) exhibit a pure first-order transition, involving nucleation and the growth of damage. The system's critical behavior in both limits is similar to that observed in interdependent networks.

Critical and steady-state characteristics of delay propagation in an airport network

Abstract:In this work, we established a density equation for delayed airports to investigate the horizontal propagation mechanism of delays among airports in an airport network. We explored the critical conditions, steady-state features, and scale of the delay propagation, and designed a simulation system to verify the accuracy of the results. The results indicated that, due to the no-table scale-free feature of an airport network, the critical value of delay propagation is extremely small, and delays are prone to propagate among airports. Furthermore, as delay propagation reaches a steady state in an aviation network, the degree value of the node becomes highly correlated with its delay state. Hub airports with high degree values are the most prone to being affected by delay propagation. In addition, the number of airports that are initially delayed influences the time required for delay propagation to reach a steady state. Specifically, if there are fewer initially delayed airports, a longer time is required to reach a steady state. In the steady state, the delay ratios of airports with different degree values in the network converge to a balance point. The delay degree of the node is highly positively correlated with the delay propagation rate in the network, but negatively related to the degree distribution index of the network.

Delay-driven phase transitions in an epidemic model on time-varying networks

Abstract:A complex networked system typically has a time-varying nature in interactions among its components, which is intrinsically complicated and therefore technically challenging for analysis and control. This paper investigates an epidemic process on a time-varying network with a time delay. First, an averaging theorem is established to approximate the delayed time-varying system using autonomous differential equations for the analysis of system evolution. On this basis, the critical time delay is determined, across which the endemic equilibrium becomes unstable and a phase transition to oscillation in time via Hopf bifurcation will appear. Then, numerical examples are examined, including a periodically time-varying network, a blinking network, and a quasi-periodically time-varying network, which are simulated to verify the theoretical results. Further, it is demonstrated that the existence of time delay can extend the network frequency range to generate Turing patterns, showing a facilitating effect on phase transitions.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive delay performance measurement and analysis in a large-scale wireless sensor network. We build a lightweight delay measurement system and present a robust method to calculate the per-packet delay. We show that the method can identify incorrect delays and recover them with a bounded error. Through analysis of delay and other system metrics, we seek to answer the following fundamental questions: What are the spatial and temporal characteristics of delay performance in a real network? What are the most important impacting factors, and is there any practical model to capture those factors? What are the implications to protocol designs? In this paper, we identify important factors from the data trace and show that the important factors are not necessarily the same with those in the Internet. Furthermore, we propose a delay model to capture those factors. We revisit several prevalent protocol designs such as Collection Tree Protocol, opportunistic routing, and Dynamic Switching-based Forwarding and show that our model and analysis are useful to practical protocol designs.
Wireless Communications with Hard Delay Constraints: Cross-Layer Scheduling with Its Performance Analysis

Abstract:Hard-delay constrained wireless communication has attracted considerable recent attention because it holds the promise of playing a vital role in the wireless Internet of Things (IoT) systems for supporting the time-sensitive tasks. Hard-delay constrained communication refers to the case in which the delay-violation probability of packets is zero with a given deadline. How to strike the optimal power-latency-throughput tradeoff with a hard-delay constraint remains open. In this article, we aim to characterize the hard-delay constrained capacity with a deadline which covers one or multiple coherence time of the fading channel. Specifically, we first conceive a low-complexity and yet suboptimal cross-layer scheduling scheme to obtain an analytical bound of the hard-delay constrained capacity. Saddlepoint approximation is adopted to obtain its hard-delay constrained throughput as a function of the tolerated delay and average power, which provides us with properties of the achievable bound of the hard-delay constrained capacity. Further, we investigate the optimal joint channel and queue-aware scheduling to derive the hard-delay constrained capacity. In particular, by quantifying channel and queue states and recalling the optimality of threshold-based policies, we approximate the optimal hard-delay constrained scheduling by a deterministic policy obtained based on the quantized constrained Markov decision process. More structures of this optimal scheduling policy are revealed through the curve fitting by dividing the system states into distinct regions. Finally, the hard-delay constrained capacity is presented as a function of both the average power and maximum delay, with the assistance of both the theoretical analysis from the achievable bound and curve fitting.
A New Phase Transition for Local Delays in MANETs

Abstract:We consider Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) with transmitters located according to a Poisson point in the Euclidean plane, slotted Aloha Medium Access (MAC) protocol and the so-called outage scenario, where a successful transmission requires a Signal-to-Interference-and-Noise (SINR) larger than some threshold. We analyze the local delays in such a network, namely the number of times slots required for nodes to transmit a packet to their prescribed next-hop receivers. The analysis depends very much on the receiver scenario and on the variability of the fading. In most cases, each node has finite-mean geometric random delay and thus a positive next hop throughput. However, the spatial (or large population) averaging of these individual finite mean-delays leads to infinite values in several practical cases, including the Rayleigh fading and positive thermal noise case. In some cases it exhibits an interesting phase transition phenomenon where the spatial average is finite when certain model parameters are below a threshold and infinite above. We call this phenomenon, contention phase transition. We argue that the spatial average of the mean local delays is infinite primarily because of the outage logic, where one transmits full packets at time slots when the receiver is covered at the required SINR and where one wastes all the other time slots. This results in the "RESTART" mechanism, which in turn explains why we have infinite spatial average. Adaptive coding offers a nice way of breaking the outage/RESTART logic. We show examples where the average delays are finite in the adaptive coding case, whereas they are infinite in the outage case.
High-Resolution Cross-Layer Scheduling for Low-Latency Communications: when Infinitesimal Method Meets Stochastic Order

Abstract:Latency-aware scheduling has attracted considerable recent attention due to its potential wide-ranging applications in smart grids, automatic driving, telesurgery, and factory automation. Existing scheduling policies mainly exploit low-resolution adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), in which the number of legitimate transmission rate is quite limited or even binary owing to the stringently constrained hardware complexity. Recently, rate adaption with a huge number of selectable rates is made practical by cutting-edge AMC, e.g., deep neural network (DNN) empowered transceivers. However, the performance limit of high-resolution scheduling remains open. In this paper, its optimal delay-power tradeoff is presented by adopting infinitesimal analysis and stochastic order. Particularly, we conceive two quantized version of a high-resolution scheduling that reveal its upper and lower performance bounds. The two bounds are shown to converge to the performance limit of infinite-resolution scheduling with controllable variables as the resolution or the number of optional rates increases, thereby allowing us to leverage the squeeze theorem to attain its delay-power tradeoff. We show that the gap between two quantized cross-layer optimization under delay and power constraints respectively vanishes as the quantization error diminishes, thereby attaining the optimal scheduling through a fitting approach. Simulation results demonstrate the substantial gain of high-resolution scheduling.
Simultaneous Progressing Switching Protocols for Timing Predictable Real-Time Network-on-Chips

Abstract:Many-core systems require inter-core communication, and network-on-chips (NoCs) have been demonstrated to provide good scalability. However, not only the distributed structure but also the link switching on the NoCs have imposed a great challenge in the design and analysis for real-time systems. With scalability and flexibility in mind, the existing link switching protocols usually consider each single link to be scheduled independently, e.g., the worm-hole switching protocol. The flexibility of such link-based arbitrations allows each packet to be distributed over multiple routers but also increases the number of possible link states (the number of flits in a buffer) that have to be considered in the worst-case timing analysis. For achieving timing predictability, we propose less flexible switching protocols, called \emph{\Simultaneous Progressing Switching Protocols} (SP$^2$), in which the links used by a flow \emph{either} all simultaneously transmit one flit (if it exists) of this flow \emph{or} none of them transmits any flit of this flow. Such an \emph{all-or-nothing} property of the SP$^2$ relates the scheduling behavior on the network to the uniprocessor self-suspension scheduling problem. We provide rigorous proofs which confirm the equivalence of these two problems. Moreover, our approaches are not limited to any specific underlying routing protocols, which are usually constructed for deadlock avoidance instead of timing predictability. We demonstrate the analytical dominance of the fixed-priority $SP^2$ over some of the existing sufficient schedulability analysis for fixed-priority wormhole switched network-on-chips.

Criticality in Random Threshold Networks: Annealed Approximation and Beyond

Abstract:Random Threshold Networks with sparse, asymmetric connections show complex dynamical behavior similar to Random Boolean Networks, with a transition from ordered to chaotic dynamics at a critical average connectivity $K_c$. In this type of model - contrary to Boolean Networks - propagation of local perturbations (damage) depends on the in-degree of the sites. $K_c$ is determined analytically, using an annealed approximation, and the results are confirmed by numerical simulations. It is shown that the statistical distributions of damage spreading near the percolation transition obey power-laws, and dynamical correlations between active network clusters become maximal. We investigate the effect of local damage suppression at highly connected nodes for networks with scale-free in-degree distributions. Possible relations of our findings to properties of real-world networks, like robustness and non-trivial degree-distributions, are discussed.
