Abstract:X-ray Differential phase contrast computed tomography (DPC-CT) is a useful tool to image internal structure of tested sample, especially for low-Z materials. The image quality of the DPC-CT slices is highly relevant to the retrieved DPC images. Due to the existence of phase unwrapping errors and phase errors induced by strong scattering materials in DPC images, DPC-CT slices suffers from information loss and severe artifacts. In the present research, iterative phase correction and threshold segmentation method is proposed to eliminate phase unwrapping error in DPC sinogram. Regularized phase retrieval method considering inter-frame noise impact is proposed to reconstruct high quality phase. Iterative reconstruction method with total variation is utilized to mitigate the artifacts caused by strong scattering materials. The proposed method is proved effective to improve the image quality in DPC-CT system.

Abstract:An orthogonal dispersive spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) system based on a spectrometer consisting of a high spectral resolution virtually-imaged phased array (VIPA) and a low resolution diffraction grating is developed. Two-dimensional (2D) dispersion generated by the combination of the VIPA and the grating in conjunction with a 2D CCD leads to an improved performance of the spectrometer. Ultrahigh spectral resolution of 0.002 nm within a free spectrum range of 50 nm is realized, providing the spectrometer with a spectral sampling rate up to similar to 10(5). The developed SDOCT realizes an imaging depth over 80 mm, which is the longest depth range ever achieved by SDOCT. The increased spectral sampling rate also results in a high signal-to-noise ratio of the SDOCT system. The application of the developed system is further illustrated by quantitative phase imaging of a glass plate and an optical lens. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:To achieve full-depth spectral domain optical coherence tomography in the case of strong environmental disturbance, the iterative phase-shifting (IPS) method and modified dispersion-coded (MDC) method are proposed in this work. In IPS, the precise amount of phase shift is retrieved by iteration, and the direction of the phase shift is determined by dispersion compensation. Conjugate mirror items and noise can be simultaneously eliminated by two captured interferograms, whereas only one of them can be removed in the traditional phase-shift method with two interferograms. In MDC, they are removed through dispersion compensation and signal extraction with a single interferogram. Full-depth images of a glass slide, an onion, and a live fish eye are obtained by the two methods. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are analyzed and compared. IPS is found to be more effective for removing conjugate artifacts, whereas MDC is more conducive to real-time imaging. For a 2 mm × 3.6 mm image of a fish eye (200 depth scans and 1200 spectral sampling points per depth scan), the mirror image artifact is reduced by 28.55 dB in MDC and 41.53 dB in IPS. Processing times are 5.1 seconds (20 iterations) for the IPS method and 0.91 seconds for MDC.

Abstract:A complex full-range spectral domain optical coherence tomography system based on spatial sinusoidal phase modulation is presented. Through sinusoidal phase modulation in the reference arm, the quadrature components of interferogram can be obtained by harmonic detecting. Then the complex-conjugate ambiguity, DC term and autocorrelation noise are eliminated by the Fourier transform of complex interferogram. A complex-conjugate rejection ratio of about 35 dB is achieved. Furthermore, in our experiment, high speed complex-conjugate resolved imaging is performed by combining the sinusoidal phase modulation and transversal scanning.

Abstract:A new method based cross-correlation technique (CD-OCT) is proposed to acquire and analyse the information about flow velocity with low signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) in spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT). We theoretically study the procedure of this method, and analyse the correlation between the noises by computer simulation and experiment. The Doppler flow images reconstructed by CD-OCT are compared with those reconstructed by Joint spectral and time-domain optical coherence tomography (STD-OCT). The results demonstrate that CD-OCT can significantly improve the SNR, thus rendering it suitable for the flow measurement in low SNR.

Abstract:We developed a spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) to reduce auto-correlation artifacts (AC) using dual-balanced detection (DBD). AC were composed of the interference signals between different sample tissue depths, and shown up as artifacts in OCT images. This system employed a free-space Michelson interferometer, at the refraction plane of whose beam splitter, the light reflected experienced a π/2 phase shift with respect to the light transmitted. Then two phase-opposed interferometric spectra sharing the same spectrometer optics were obtained simultaneously using two lines of a three-line CCD. This new design was of lower cost compared to the dual spectrometer design reported previously. DBD enabled this SD-OCT to achieve two-fold increase in the interested signal amplitude inherently, and obtain a SNR increase of ~2.9 dB experimentally. To demonstrate the feasibility and performance of this SD-OCT system with DBD, we conducted an imaging experiment using a glass plate to obtain the optimal spectral matching between dual-balanced spectrometer channels. As a result, this SD-OCT achieved AC reduction up to about 9 dB and direct current (DC) term suppression up to about 30 dB by cancelling the identical components between dual-balanced spectrometer channels. The efficacy of AC reduction and DC suppression was validated by imaging the polymer coating of a drug-eluting stent and fresh swine corneal tissue ex vivo. The quality of DBD optimized images was significantly improved with regard to the single-channel images.

Abstract:Photomechanics Laboratory in the University of Science and Technology of China has concentrated on principles and applications of digital image correlation (DIC) recent years. Photomechanics Laboratory not only has improved the accuracy and efficiency of DIC but also has achieved research findings on speckle pattern standardization, compensation method for 2D DIC, biomedical engineering, and serrated yielding phenomenon. This paper provides a review: (1) a theoretical model and an estimation algorithm were presented for shape function error in local deformations, and a subset size chosen criterion was presented to ensure the measurement performance; inverse compositional Gauss-Newton method using second order shape function was presented, which is two-times faster than the traditional method. (2) The inherent nature of interpolation bias was revealed, an experimental approach was developed to measure the interpolation bias, a speckle pattern assessment that considering the effects of both the systematic error and random error was presented, and a theoretical model for the speckle pattern optimization was built. (3) Compensation methods for 2D DIC based on pre-calibration were presented. (4) A system for orthognathic surgery navigation was built; full-field pulse vibration measurement system was developed. (5) The emergence and evolution of PLC band was observed, and the phenomenon of out-of-band shrink is found. The strain localization in the width-wise direction was observed using two 2D DIC systems. (6) The vibration and strain were dynamically measurement using the speckle correlation method.

Abstract:Due to computational complexity of correlation searching, the digital image correlation (DIC) method is often extremely time consuming in image processing and optical measurement, which has limited its further applications to a great extent. This paper develops a fast recursive scheme to mathematically reduce the computational burden of the traditional DIC technique and therefore improve its efficiency in deformation calculation. A global sum-table approach is proposed to simplify the computations of all double sums arising in the zero-normalized cross-correlation coefficient (ZNCC). A fast recursive algorithm is established to accelerate the calculation of the cross-correlation term in the ZNCC. Both theoretical analysis and actual displacement acquisition are carried out to validate the performance of the new DIC algorithm, which indicates that the fast recursive scheme can improve computational efficiency of integer-pixel correlation searching by about 10 to 50 times in comparison with the classic DIC algorithm, on the condition of keeping the measurement accuracy.

Multidiscipline Modeling in Materials and Structures

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of a non-contact full-field optical measurement technique known as digital image correlation (DIC). Design/methodology/approach The approach of this review paper is to introduce the research pertaining to DIC. It comprehensively covers crucial facets including its principles, historical development, core challenges, current research status and practical applications. Additionally, it delves into unresolved issues and outlines future research objectives. Findings The findings of this review encompass essential aspects of DIC, including core issues like the subpixel registration algorithm, camera calibration, measurement of surface deformation in 3D complex structures and applications in ultra-high-temperature settings. Additionally, the review presents the prevailing strategies for addressing these challenges, the most recent advancements in DIC applications across quasi-static, dynamic, ultra-high-temperature, large-scale and micro-scale engineering domains, along with key directions for future research endeavors. Originality/value This review holds a substantial value as it furnishes a comprehensive and in-depth introduction to DIC, while also spotlighting its prospective applications.

Abstract:The three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) method is rapidly developing and is being widely applied to engineering and manufacturing. Despite its extensive use, the error caused by different image matching algorithms is seldom discussed. An algorithm for 3D speckle image generation is proposed, and the performances of different subpixel correlation algorithms are studied. The advantage is that there is no interpolation bias of texture in the simulation before and after deformation, and the error from the interpolation of speckle can be omitted in this algorithm. An error criterion for 3D reconstruction is proposed. 3D speckle images were simulated, and the performance of four subpixel algorithms is addressed. Based on the research results of different subpixel algorithms, a first-order Newton-Raphson iteration method and gradient-based method are recommended for 3D-DIC measurement. Abstract:Digital image correlation (DIC) is a widely used optical metrology for surface deformation measurements. DIC relies on nonlinear optimization method. Thus an initial guess is quite important due to its influence on the converge characteristics of the algorithm. In order to obtain a reliable, accurate initial guess, a reliability-guided digital image correlation (RG-DIC) method, which is able to intelligently obtain a reliable initial guess without using time-consuming integer-pixel registration, was proposed. However, the RG-DIC and its improved methods are path-dependent and cannot be fully parallelized. Besides, it is highly possible that RG-DIC fails in the full-field analysis of deformation without manual intervention if the deformation fields contain large areas of discontinuous deformation. Feature-based initial guess is highly robust while it is relatively time-consuming. Recently, path-independent algorithm, fast Fourier transform-based cross correlation (FFT-CC) algorithm, was proposed to estimate the initial guess. Complete parallelizability is the major advantage of the FFT-CC algorithm, while it is sensitive to small deformation. Wu et al proposed an efficient integer-pixel search scheme, but the parameters of this algorithm are set by the users empirically. In this technical note, a fully parallelizable DIC method is proposed. Different from RG-DIC method, the proposed method divides DIC algorithm into two parts: full-field initial guess estimation and sub-pixel registration. The proposed method has the following benefits: 1) providing a pre-knowledge of deformation fields; 2) saving computational time; 3) reducing error propagation; 4) integratability with well-established DIC algorithms; 5) fully parallelizability.

Abstract:The computational efficiency and measurement accuracy of the digital image correlation (DIC) have become more and more important in recent years. For the three-dimensional DIC (3D-DIC), these issues are much more serious. First, there are two cameras employed which increases the computational amount several times. Second, because of the differences in view angles, the must-do stereo correspondence between the left and right images is equivalently a non-uniform deformation, and cannot be weakened by increasing the sampling frequency of digital cameras. This work mainly focuses on the efficiency and accuracy of 3D-DIC. The inverse compositional Gauss–Newton algorithm (IC-GN2) with the second-order shape function is firstly proposed. Because it contains the second-order displacement gradient terms, the measurement accuracy for the non-uniform deformation thus can be improved significantly, which is typically one order higher than the first-order shape function combined with the IC-GN algorithm (IC-GN1), and 2 times faster than the second-order shape function combined with the forward additive Gauss–Newton algorithm (FA-GN2). Then, based on the features of the IC-GN1 and IC-GN2 algorithms, a high-efficiency and high-accuracy measurement strategy for 3D-DIC is proposed in the end.

Abstract:High-speed full-range complex Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (FDOCT) using sinusoidal phase-modulating interferometry is proposed. A high-rate two-dimensional (2-D) CCD camera is used to record time-sequential sinusoidally phase-modulated 2-D spectral interferograms, from which the complex 2-D spectral interferograms corresponding to each frame of the 2-D CCD camera are extracted by Fourier transform method. By taking inverse Fourier transform of the complex spectral interferograms, full-range B-scan images free of the complex conjugate ambiguity as well as dc and autocorrelation noises are obtained at intervals of the frame period of the 2-D CCD camera. Time-sequential cross-sectional imaging of human skin ex vivo with the proposed method is demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper presents an approach to remove motion artifacts based on a spatial-spectral encoded parallel OCT (SSE-POCT) system, where encoded rectangular illumination is employed. Motion artifacts within a B-scan are avoided due to parallel detection intrinsic to parallel OCT, while those between successive B-scans are estimated and corrected by a proposed overlapped data correlation (ODC) algorithm. To preserve axial resolution, decoded B-scan corresponding to complete spectrum is stitched from successive encoded B-scans after motion correction. Imaging is conducted on several samples under preset motion trajectories, and OCT images with unnoticed motion artifacts and well-preserved resolutions are reconstructed. The approach based on the developed SSE-POCT system and the proposed ODC algorithm for motion correction can be applicable for in vivo imaging where uncontrolled motion is usually unavoidable. Abstract:3D digital-image correlation (3D-DIC) is a non-contact optical technique for full-field shape, displacement, and deformation measurement. Given the high experimental hardware costs associated with 3D-DIC, the development of high-fidelity 3D-DIC simulations holds significant value. However, existing research on 3D-DIC simulation was mainly carried out through the generation of random speckle images. This study innovatively proposes a complete 3D-DIC simulation method involving optical simulation and mechanical simulation and integrating 3D-DIC, virtual stereo vision, and image super-resolution reconstruction technology. Virtual stereo vision can reduce hardware costs and eliminate camera-synchronization errors. Image super-resolution reconstruction can compensate for the decrease in precision caused by image-resolution loss. An array of software tools such as ANSYS SPEOS 2024R1, ZEMAX 2024R1, MECHANICAL 2024R1, and MULTIDIC v1.1.0 are used to implement this simulation. Measurement systems based on stereo vision and virtual stereo vision were built and tested for use in 3D-DIC. The results of the simulation experiment show that when the synchronization error of the basic stereo-vision system (BSS) is within 10−3 time steps, the reconstruction error is within 0.005 mm and the accuracy of the virtual stereo-vision system is between the BSS's synchronization error of 10−7 and 10−6 time steps. In addition, after image super-resolution reconstruction technology is applied, the reconstruction error will be reduced to within 0.002 mm. The simulation method proposed in this study can provide a novel research path for existing researchers in the field while also offering the opportunity for researchers without access to costly hardware to participate in related research.

Abstract:This paper presents the basics of the Digital Image Correlation System, its algorithm of operation, methods of data recording and implementation. In addition, the paper characterises in detail the standard bench instrumentation necessary for the implementation of this type of measurement. The paper also describes the procedure of sample preparation and classifies the main methods of applying a marker to the surface of the sample. The article highlights the main advantages of the system and the main difficulties associated with its operation, and indicates the important parameters affecting the quality of the measurement. The paper shows a wide range of applications of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and the possibilities of cooperation with other measurement systems as well as extended versions of the system, such as Digital Volumetric Correlation. The article also outlines further directions for the development of the DIC research methodology including, among others, extending the temperature range in which the method can be applied, as well as increasing the speed of camera image recording. Such modifications will allow the image correlation method to be used for research where it has not yet been possible.
