Abstract:Alkali pollution can affect the physical and mechanical properties of lateritic soil to different degrees depending on soil type, alkali concentration, and interaction time. This study aimed to investigate the effect of alkali concentration on mechanical and microscopic characteristics of undisturbed lateritic soil and its influence mechanism. The soil samples were contaminated at different concentrations of sodium hydroxide solution (pH = 8.8, 9.4, 11.4, 12.4, 13.4) for 24 h. The particle and pore distribution, mineral composition, morphological characteristics, and mechanical strength of alkali-contaminated soil were measured. It was found that the products of kaolinite minerals dissolved by alkali would undergo polycondensation to form aluminosilicate gels. These gels filled the pores and bound the soil particles, increasing the compressive strength of the soil. In the strong alkaline environment (pH = 12.4 and 13.4), the formation of gels was inhibited by high concentration of OH − and the collapse of soil skeleton caused by the violent dissolution of kaolinite was the cause for the decrease in unconfined uniaxial compressive strength.
